1999 Chevrolet Malibu problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.

Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.

First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)

The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.

For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.

The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.

For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-12
  • VIN: 1G1ND52J6X6
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THIS COULD BE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE. (WILL THE ALARM INITIATE ITSELF THAT IS LOCATED DIRECTLY BEHIND THE KEY CYLINDER LOCK CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO DIE WHILE DRIVING)? THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST MONTH... APPARENTLY THIS CAR HAS A ANTI-THEFT FEATURE NOT MENTIONED IN THE USER MANUAL (MENTIONS A ALARM FOR THE CAR RADIO, BUT NOT THE CAR ITSELF). MY CAR WOULD "NOT START" BECAUSE "IT" THOUGHT I WAS STEALING MY OWN CAR WHILE TRYING TO START THE CAR. ACCORDING TO CHEVROLET THERE IS NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF OR RESET IT MANUALLY (YOU JUST HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE ALARM GOES AWAY), THE CHEVROLET DEALER SAID UNIT MUST BE REPLACED (WHICH WOULD COST AROUND $350.00 TO $400.00 WHICH I REFUSE TO PAY). REGARDING SAFETY -- WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU NEED TO MOVE THE CAR FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER IN AN EMERGENCY AND THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT STARTS BLINKING? (NO WAY TO DISABLE THE ALARM) -- NEED TO WAIT... FIRST TIME IT TOOK OVER 8 HOURS, THE SECOND TIME IT TOOK LESS THAN 1 HOUR FOR IT TO RESET.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-25
  • VIN: 1G1ND52T9X6
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: IGNITION SWITCH HAS BEEN GETTING LOOSE AND DIFFICULT TO TURN ON FOR A LONG TIME. RECEIVED NTSB RECALL LETTER ABOUT UNINTENTIONAL KEY ROTATION FOR THE 1999 CHEVY MALIBU. I FOLLOWED THE NTSB INSTRUCTIONS AND REMOVED THE KEY FROM THE KEY RING. ON APRIL 21, 2015 THE CHEVY DEALER GLUED A PLASTIC HOUSING TO MY KEYS. AFTER RECEIVING MY KEYS BACK I COULD HARDLY GET THE KEY TO ROTATE THE IGNITION LOCK, I HAD TO JIGGLE THE KEY QUITE VIGOROUSLY TO GET THE IGNITION TO OPERATE. FOUR DAYS LATER THE KEY FELL OUT OF THE IGNITION AND THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH. ALTHOUGH DIFFICULT TO STEER AND BRAKE I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY BRING THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, LOCATE THE KEY ON THE FLOOR AND AFTER REINSERTING THE KEY RESTARTED HE CAR. I HAD A ROLL OF TAPE IN THE GLOVE BOX AND I USED IT TO TAPE THE KEY IN POSITION. NO FURTHER DIFFICULTIES. ON APRIL 27, 2015 I REPLACED THE LOCK CORE SUCCESSFULLY. THE RECALL FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM IS NOT ACCEPTABLE OR SAFE. I KNEW THE IGNITION LOCK WAS GETTING BAD BUT WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE ENGINE WOULD SHUT DOWN IF THE KEY FELL OUT. THIS FIX GAVE ME A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY THAT A PROBLEM WAS TAKEN CARE OF. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER I THOUGHT THEY WOULD REPLACE THE LOCK CORE AND KEYS AND NOT JUST GLUE A HOUSING ONTO MY WORN-OUT KEYS. MY REPLACEMENT OF THE LOCK CORE SOLVED THE PROBLEM THE WAY THE DEALER SHOULD HAVE. A LETTER NEEDS TO GO OUT TO ALL THAT RECEIVED THE RECALL LETTER THAT THIS IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE FIX IF THE LOCK CORE IS NOT REPLACED. WHEN THE DEALER SHOWED ME THE FIX I LAUGHED AT THE TIME AND SAID YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME THAT I'VE WASTED 1:45 OF MY TIME WAITING FOR THE GLUE TO DRY. I DO NOT KNOW WHO THOUGHT THIS WOULD SOLVE ANYTHING OR APPROVED IT BUT I THINK THEY ARE AN IDIOT AND SHOULD BE FIRED FROM ANY POSITION OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAFETY THAT THESE RECALLS ARE SUPPOSE TO ADDRESS. *TR

1999 Chevrolet Malibu recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Negative 1999 Chevrolet Malibu car reviews

  1. Coy Bergstrom 2025-01-21

The AC on this car can be a bit loud and intermittent. I had it fixed once, but unfortunately, it started acting up again by the time I got home (9 miles). The brakes can be a bit touchy on the interstate, and it feels like the car is vibrating a bit. However, the upgrades CD system is very nice, and the sun roof is absolutely wonderful. Overall, it's a fun car to drive and is mechanically very reliable.

After a few months, some issues started to arise. The A/C switch works intermittently, and the driver's side power window doesn't work in hot temperatures. Additionally, the brakes need to be replaced every 5000 miles. The valve cover gasket blew, and the battery died after the first year. The biggest issue was when the rod bearings were lost, which happened right after the warranty ended. A friend and I had to pull the engine and rebuild it ourselves. However, I can say that I will not be purchasing another Chevrolet or domestic car again. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I had to ship this one. It was bad. Right from the start, it would not allow for the mounting of the spare. Any spare would run on the calipers. I went through brake pads and rotors like a movie theater goes through popcorn. However, the rear shoes did last almost 30k. I had to replace the pads every 5 or 6k and the rotors at 8-10k. It is the only time I knowingly traded in a vehicle with problems.

I have experienced repetitive issues with my Malibu, including automatic windows breaking twice, the air conditioner failing three times, and the alternator going out without any battery warning. Despite having purchased the car new less than three years ago, it has been in the shop approximately ten times. While no major issues have occurred, I cannot recommend this car.

Bought New. Have 34K on it now. Broken Down and Stranded 3x. 2x out of town. AC stopped working fixed. Ignition broke so car would not start. Alternator died, 3 weeks prior battery died and had towed to dealer and specifically told them check the alternator they said it was fine, they were wrong. Engine collant leaks no one knows why. Rotars Bad and so are tires. This car is a Lemon!!!!!

Your Malibu sounds like a great car overall! It gets good gas mileage, has the power you need, and is comfortable to drive. While it may be plain in styling, it's perfect for small to medium families. The quality is good, but it's important to keep an eye on the head gaskets to avoid potential problems. The engine may make a 'click clack' sound when started cold, but this is normal and should disappear after a few minutes of running. The transmission shifts well too!

The 1999 Chevy Malibu is a great car for those who know what they're doing. I've had mine for 10 years now and I'm planning on keeping it. With a little fine tuning, it feels like you're driving an Indy car. The V6 engine is perfectly spec'd and I've even added a twin turbo pac, engine mods, tuned the suspension, and added extra trac-bars. I understand that not everyone can do this, but for me, GM makes a high-quality car. I've taken apart other cars and they're just not up to par, especially the ones that come from dealerships. They're made with cheap metal and plastic, and sometimes the people making them seem lost.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car - it's a used one with 156,000 miles on it. While it has been reliable, I have had to replace the engine (luckily still under warranty), starter, alternator, battery, and do a tune up. I do need to replace the front brakes once or twice a year, but that's not too bad. However, recently the transmission has been acting up and unfortunately, I can't afford to fix it. One thing to note is that there is a bit of a grind when turning at a stop, but I've been told it's nothing to worry about. Overall, it's been a good car, but repairs can be a bit pricey (at least $200 even if you fix it yourself). Let me know if you have any questions!

It's great to see so many comments here, but I was a bit surprised to see some negativity. Personally, I've had my Malibu for 4 years and put 20K miles on it with no major issues. While the tire wear is a bit faster than usual and the AC cuts off occasionally, I've found that turning the blower off and then back on fixes the issue for another 15 minutes. The build quality could be better, but the price/features ratio on this car is fantastic. It's not a luxury car, but it has everything you need and nothing you don't.

Pebbles and I are thrilled with our Malibu! It's affordable, fuel-efficient, and has all the power features of a more expensive car. Plus, it has a sleek Euro sport look, a smooth ride, and plenty of head and legroom. Thank you, Chevrolet! We even sold our foreign car, which had uncomfortably low seats.
