2001 Chevrolet Express problems
The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.
In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.
Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common 2001 Chevrolet Express problems
The Chevrolet Express 2001 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, starting and stalling issues, and brakes.
- Starting and Stalling Problems: Some owners of the 2001 Chevrolet Express have reported starting and stalling problems. This issue has been reported to occur when driving uphill and coming to a stop, where the van stalls and won't start up right away. This problem has been attributed to a bad ground, which can cause the engine to stall. A loose ground wire at the thermostat housing has been identified as a possible cause of this issue. The average cost to fix this problem is around $4,000, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 70,000 miles.
- Brakes: The 2001 Chevrolet Express has been reported to have brake problems, specifically pulling to the left when braking. This issue has been reported to occur even after replacing all the brake pads, calipers, and hardware. The problem has been isolated to the ABS unit under the left side of the frame rail, which can fail and cause the vehicle to lose braking on one side. The average cost to fix this problem is around $8,300, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 67,000 miles.
These common problems have been reported by owners of the 2001 Chevrolet Express, and they can cause significant inconvenience and expense. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

I've had this vehicle for six years and it has 218,000 miles on it. Despite recently experiencing some transmission issues, the van still runs great and starts every morning. I would definitely consider purchasing another Express, as the engine has never given me any problems. While the interior parts may not hold up as well, the performance and mechanical reliability more than make up for it.

The Express cargo van is a fantastic option for small contractor-repairmen. Even after 10 years in service and running 30,000 miles a year, our truck has required nothing but routine maintenance. The 5.7 V8 runs flawlessly and effortlessly carries any load we put on it.

Congratulations on your growing family! I can understand the hesitation in choosing between a full-size van, a mini, or a Suburban. However, it sounds like you made the right choice with the full-size van, especially with the cargo room it provides. It's great to hear that you have no regrets and that you can comfortably fit your whole family with plenty of cargo room to spare. The 5.0 V8 engine sounds impressive, with its smoothness and power, and it's great to know that towing up to 5000 lbs is no problem. The transmission is also very smooth, which is a testament to the quality of the GM product. With a mileage of about 15/18, it's also quite efficient. It's wonderful to hear that your van has been reliable and has never needed repairs (except for one body repair). It's no wonder that both you and your wife love it!

This vehicle has been an excellent companion for our family trips around the Midwest. We use it to tow our camper and carry our gear, guests, and family members on ski, kayaking, and biking trips. Additionally, it has been very useful for hauling large objects and loads such as rototillers, pavers, and lumber. The seat design is comfortable, and the legroom for the second and third rows is amazing, making long drives a breeze. The strong front and rear AC/heater system ensures that everyone is comfortable throughout the journey. The Bose/dual TV/VCR system with AV hookups is fantastic, making the ride even more enjoyable. After installing four winter tires, the 255/70 Firestone Indy 500 tires have transformed the wet/dry handling, and I have safely passed 4WD SUVs on snow and ice during our ski trips. Overall, we are very pleased with this vehicle.

Love this van! We do a lot of camping and it really fits the bill, b

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I'm selling my van, which I bought brand new back in July 2001. Since my kids have grown up and moved out, I don't need as much space anymore. It's been a great family van and it tows really well. There's plenty of room for everyone and everything! I think it would be the perfect vehicle for a family with 2-4 kids. Let me know if you're interested!
