Ford Focus 2001 problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AND HAVE SPENT MONEY ON TPS, THROTTLE BODY, SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES, COIL PACK, FUEL PUMP AND FILTER AND IT STILL DOES THE SAME SUDDEN ACCELERATION. THE LOCAL DEALER SAID THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CORRECT THAT ISSUE WITH OLDER FORD FOCUSES. IS THERE A FIX TO THIS ISSUE AVAILABLE? MAYBE A RECALL? I HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO HITTING A MOVING VEHICLE, AFTER EXITING IH 35 AND COMING UNTO A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON THE ACCESS ROAD. I ALMOST REAR ENDED SEVERAL VEHICLES STOPPED AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. UPON EXITING THE INTERSTATE I WAS APPROACHING THE INTERSECTION, MY VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 3500 RPM AND I COULD NOT STOP IT USING THE BRAKES EVEN THOUGH I WAS PRACTICALLY STANDING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE GEAR IN NEURAL AND THUS DID NOT HIT THE VEHICLES AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY IDLED DOWN BUT IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS AND AN EXTREMELY SCARRY SITUATION. I HAVE NOT USED THE VEHICLE SINCE EVEN THOUGH I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON REPAIRS. I WOULD PROBABLY NOT BUY A FORD AGAIN. I AM GOING TO SELL THE CAR BUT WILL TELL THE BUYER THAT THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. THANKS FOR ANY HELP AVAILABLE

I was lucky to find this wagon as it was the last one available in its size and price range in the US. I have driven a similar rental car in European traffic and loved it so much that I decided to buy one for myself. It handles better than my previously owned Civic and I have no trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic in DC. The 5spd manual and ZETEC make it an interesting and fun vehicle to drive. The interior is spacious enough to accommodate my two kids and big dog. Although the mileage is worse than expected, I shouldn't be surprised given the traffic. I would recommend avoiding Sheehy Ford in Springfield.

Great to hear that you're enjoying your silver ZX3 with only 23,000 miles on it! It sounds like a fantastic car that makes everyday trips fun with its sharp handling and zippy engine. Although it could use a bit more zip, it's great that you can fit almost anything into it and it's so small on the outside, making it easy to park. The seats also provide good support and it's great to hear that you fit easily into the car despite being 6'5

I've had my ZX3 for about 2 months now and I absolutely love it! After a stressful day, there's nothing better than getting in the car and going for a cruise with the tunes cranked up. The fun-to-drive factor is off the scale and around corners, it's so much fun. Although it could use more power, it's still an amazing ride!

Hi there! I recently bought a used Focus Wagon with only 11K miles on it. The previous owner had put on a set of 4 new Goodyear Eagle Aquatred3 tires at 7K miles. However, I've noticed that the tires have worn unevenly and I've already chewed through them at 29K miles. I've had the alignment checked and rotations done, but the problem persists. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I have only had the car for a year, but it's a fantastic vehicle. The driving pleasure is just superb. Handling, acceleration, and ride all come together to create a wonderful product.

I bought this car used in 2013 with 60k miles on it and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. The previous owner may not have maintained it well, which could have contributed to the problems. However, I've had to replace the radio, fuel pump, timing belt, serpentine belt, motor mounts, spark plugs, radiator hose, thermostat, and alternator within a year. The cooling fans are currently out, but I'm working on getting it fixed. Although I've had some difficulties, I've made sure to keep up with the necessary maintenance. The electrical issues have been the most challenging, but I've been able to work with several mechanics to keep it running. Overall, I would recommend looking into other options before considering this car. Thank you for reading!

This car has had a lot of issues over the years, but I have been able to handle them all. I am now facing some more repairs, including motor mounts, a timing belt, and a new head gasket, but I am confident that I can get it all taken care of. Despite some rattles and wind noise, I still enjoy driving this car. It has been a reliable companion for me over the years, and I am proud to have kept it running for so long.

I purchased a used Focus in early November 2002. Although it required some maintenance work, I was able to address the issues promptly and efficiently. While I was initially concerned about the car's reliability, I have since been able to enjoy it without any major issues. While the car's value may have decreased slightly since I purchased it, I am confident that it will continue to serve me well. While the gas mileage is not exceptional, it is still satisfactory for a car of this size. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and do not regret my decision to buy this car.

I purchased this car a little over a year ago from a local seller for $1200. At the time of purchase, it had 251000 miles on it. Although I should have taken it to a mechanic, I drove it for 3000 miles in the first month. Since then, I have had to replace the battery, rear wheel bearings, rear and front brakes, alternator, full front suspension, and new tires. Unfortunately, it now requires a new engine, which will be an additional expense. Despite the challenges, I have a soft spot for this car, as it was my first. Although it has had its fair share of issues, it has great gas mileage and I was able to reach 110 mph before the new suspension was installed. However, I did hit a hawk which caused some damage. In hindsight, I realize that I may have purchased a car that should have been sent to the salvage yard.

Consider investing in a reliable and high-quality vehicle such as a Toyota or Hyundai, which come with a 100,000 mile warranty. Our experience with an American car has unfortunately not met our expectations, as we have encountered several issues with the car's performance and safety. Despite consulting with the dealer, the problems persist and we have not received a satisfactory explanation from the manufacturer. We believe that investing in a more dependable car will provide us with the peace of mind and confidence we need while driving.
