Ford Focus 2006 problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus 2006 problems
The Ford Focus 2006 has been known to have several common problems, which have been reported by owners.
- Door latch problem: Some cars built between September and November 1998 had problems with their door latches which weren’t built to specification, preventing the doors from closing properly.
- Loss of engine power: The 1.6 petrol version of the Focus, built between January 1999 and January 2000, may exhibit engine cut outs, which are caused by a malfunction in the engine management software.
- Oil filler cap problem: Many 1998-2004 models had a oil filler caps which worked loose and allowed oil to drip onto the exhaust heat shield.
- Automatic gearbox problem: Damage to the crankshaft position sensor often led to engines cutting out; this specifically affected 1.6 petrol Focuses with automatic gearboxes built between August 1999 and February 2000.
- Wiper motor problem: Some early second-generation cars built between April 2003 and March 2005 had wiper motors which could overheat and fail due to water entering through the wiper arm spindle. This usually happened in winter when the roads had been salted.
- Engine failure: A serious problem specific to 1.6 TDCi cars built between February and June 2004. Misaligned oil feeds reduced oil flow, causing premature wearing of the camshaft bearings and eventual engine seizure.
- Brake pedal sticking: Focuses built between November 2005 and December 2006 may exhibit problems with their brake pedals becoming stiff in cold weather, due to a non-return valve in the pump began to stick.
- Power steering problems: Models built between April and May 2008 could have had problems caused by inadequate power steering hoses, which degraded and allowed hydraulic fluid to seep out. Normally this caused the power steering to fail but in some cases the leaking fluid became hot and caused a fire.
- Rear hub bolt problems: Some models built between February and April 2007 had problems with the rear hub bolts which could work loose because they weren’t made to the correct specification.
These problems have been reported by owners, and many of them resulted in recalls. However, it is important to note that the sheer number of Focuses sold means that there is now a useful body of knowledge about the various issues you may encounter with your Focus, which helps garages find and resolve problems a little bit quicker.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-27
- VIN: 1FAHP36N86W
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The welded retainer of the front bushing on the right side lower (control) arm had rusted through. This allowed the control arm to separate from the frame and the right front wheel to turn outward (while I was traveling straight ahead). The drive shaft was pulled from the transmission and some parts hit the ground. Luckily, I was approaching a stop sign and traveling at less than 30 miles per hour. (The day before I was on I95 at 65 mph) Upon inspection you can see that the control arm is forged in the shape of a "C" from very thick metal where the bushing rests against the arm. However, the bushing is retained by a much thinner metal, welded across the arm forming the other side of the "C". It is that thinner welded retainer that had rusted out. We live in an area where salt is routinely used on the roads during the winter. I know the car is very old. However, this design is inadequate from a safety perspective in the Northeast.

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-09
- VIN: 1FAHP38Z76W
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I PURCHASED 2 BF GOODRICH G-FORCE SPORT COMP-2 RADIAL 205/50.R16 87Z SL TIRES ON APRIL 15, 2019 FROM AMAZON, INSTALLED ON FRONT TIRE POSITIONS ON MAY 9, 2019. REAR TIRES ARE GENERAL G-MAX AS-03 WHICH ARE THE SAME SIZE AND WERE USED THE SUMMER BEFORE WITH NO ISSUES, STILL SIGNIFICANT TREAD LIFE LEFT AND NO DAMAGE. ALL FOUR TIRES WERE INFLATED TO 36 PSI AFTER INSTALLATION. WHEN DRIVING ON ANY KIND OF MOISTURE, RAIN NIGHT BEFORE OR DRIZZLE OR POURING RAIN, FRONT TIRES DO NOT GRIP ROAD SURFACE AND HAVE ALMOST LED TO NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS AT VARYING SPEEDS ON RURAL ROADS, CITY STREETS, AND HIGHWAYS, ANYWHERE FROM 20MPH TO 75MPH. I HAVE NOW BECOME USED TO THE DANGER OF THE BF GOODRICH TIRES AND DRIVE EXTREMELY SLOWLY IN WET CONDITIONS. AS I HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION FRONT WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE, I ALWAYS PUT THE NEW TIRES ON THE FRONT TO ENSURE TRACTION IN BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE BF GOODRICH TIRES HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN ME KILLED MORE THAN A HANDFUL OF TIMES. AS STATED BY ANOTHER CONSUMER, I ALSO HAD TROUBLE MOUNTING ONE OF THE BF GOODRICH TIRES TO THE WHEEL AS IT DID NOT WANT TO BEAD AND NOW THE TIRE PRESSURE IN THAT TIRE WILL FLUCTUATE, WHICH HAS LED TO DAILY PRESSURE CHECKS. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES WITH ANY GENERAL BRAND TIRES. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE PURCHASED BF GOODRICH TIRES AND I NEVER WILL EVER AGAIN. I HAVE DRIVEN UP TO 180KPH ON THE GERMAN AUTOBAHN IN LESSER QUALITY VEHICLES WITH COOPER BRAND TIRES, AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN AS SCARED AS I HAVE BEEN DOING 70MPH IN DRIZZLE WITH BF GOODRICH TIRES. IT FEELS LIKE DRIVING ON ICE, NO HANDLING, NO CONTROL, JUST SLIDING. I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE GENERAL TIRES ON THE REAR WHICH HAVE KEPT ME FROM CRASHING, AND WILL BE PURCHASING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE(THE ONLY REASON I HAVE KEPT THE BF GOODRICH FOR THIS LONG IS BECAUSE I HOPED THEY JUST NEEDED TO BE BROKEN IN A LITTLE BUT IT HAS BEEN OVER A MONTH AND IT'S STILL SCARY).

- Summary: HELLO NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION, I WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A VEHICLE COMPLAINT REGARDING THE FORD FOCUS 2006 SEDAN ZX4 THAT I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE SEPTEMBER 20, 2017. WHILE DRIVING WITHIN A SERVICE ROAD, THE VEHICLE'S STALLED AND STOPPED RUNNING WHILE DRIVING UPON MULTIPLE INSTANCES OVER THE SAME DAY OF PURCHASING AND THROUGH OUT THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 22 - SEPTEMBER 30TH. AS A RESULT, I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER OF LANSING POWER MOTORS INC. FOR AN INSPECTION SEPTEMBER 23, 2017. UPON COMPLETION OF THE INSPECTION, THE MECHANICS CONFIRMED THAT "NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE" AND SUGGESTED TO PURCHASE A NEW COMPUTER FOR THE VEHICLE. ON OCTOBER 30, 2017 I WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT WHICH I THINK WAS DUE TO BAD ELECTRICAL BRAKES WHICH RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE BEING T-BONED BY ANOTHER DRIVER WITHIN A RESIDENTIAL INTERSECTION. THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO STALL OR STOP COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING AS OF MAY 14, 2018. IN ADDITION, NOTICED THAT ALL LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD DISPLAYED WHILE THE CAR STALLED AND DURING START-UP OF THE VEHICLE. UNCERTAIN ABOUT THE CAR NOT BEING RECALLED, DUE TO RECEIVING A MAILED NOTIFICATION REGARDING THE RECALL OF THE VEHICLE FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER. CAN PROVIDE THE NAME UPON CONTACT REGARDING THE VEHICLE COMPLIANT SUBMISSION OF THE FORM. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME, CONSIDERATION, AND I HOPE THAT THIS INFORMATION MAY ASSIST YOU REGARDING THE CREATION OF A VEHICLE COMPLAINT.

- Summary: EVERY FOCUS OWNER I HAVE TALKED WITH HAS HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE DOOR HANDLES BREAKING. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME SINCE 2013 THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME, AND IF I DON'T FIX IT MYSELF, DEALERSHIPS WANT TO CHARGE $250 TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED, AND COVERED ON FORD'S EXPENSE. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED, FEBRUARY 2017, IT BROKE NOT ONLY ON THE OUTSIDE, BUT ALSO THE INSIDE HANDLE OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. SO NEITHER THE OUTSIDE, NOR INSIDE LATCH WILL OPEN ON, AND THAT'S A DEATH SENTENCE IF (KNOCK ON WOOD) I GET INTO A BAD ACCIDENT. SEPTEMBER 19TH 2017, THE EXTERNAL HANDLE IS BROKEN AND I AM CURRENTLY NOW UNABLE TO OPEN NEITHER DOOR (IT'S A 2 DOOR). I LITERALLY HAVE TO CRAWL THROUGH THE HATCH UNTIL THAT DECIDES TO BREAK ON ME. I CAN LEAVE MY WINDOW DOWN JUST ENOUGH TO STICK MY ARM IN TO UNLATCH IT, BUT U LOVE IN RAIN ASS OHIO, AND DON'T FEEL LIKE HAVING FLOOD ISSUES ONTOP OF THIS MESS. WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN RECALLED? I SWEAR I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER FORD IN MY LIFE AFTER HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS. IT'S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS AND SADLY WILL TAKE SOMEONE DYING TO GET THIS ACKNOWLEDGED BY FORD. VERY DISAPPOINTED, AND I'M RISKING MY LIFE EVERYTIME I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL.

Although the look is nice, I must say that the best way to sum up the Focus SES is function and performance. The value you get upgrading from SE to SES is well worth the incremental price increase. On the performance side of things, the SES Focus is very sporty. The steering and suspension are tight and responsive, with rock solid cornering for a car in its class. It's a sports car 'feel' in an economy package.
-
This is a great family car! We opted for a wagon instead of an SUV so that our small kids could easily get in and out on their own. Although there are no rear headrests, the heated mirrors and seats work great and the car gets decent mileage. It's fully loaded and an affordable alternative to the $35K+ we would have spent on another wagon, with as much rear room as a midsize SUV. Just be aware that it may make some strange noises if the gas falls below a quarter tank. Also, the start can be a little jumpy at times, but it's not really that bad.
-
Works for my family. Fills any hauling needs except for extra large stuff. Fuel economy is excellent. Fun to drive with good performance. Great price.
-
I've owned my Focus for 3 years and have driven 70,000 miles without any mechanical problems. I'm still getting about 30 mpg, which is great. One of my favorite things about this car is how easy it is to make tight turns, which always helps me find the best parking spot. The seats are also very comfortable for long drives, which is important since I do a lot of driving. The clutch is smooth and the steering is easy, making it a pleasure to drive. Overall, I absolutely love this car!

I've had my Focus ZX4 ST for almost 2 years now, and I still have no complaints. Although the parking brake release button cracked, it was replaced without any issues under warranty. Some people seem to think that the A/C shutoff under acceleration is a big deal, but I lived in Las Vegas for most of the time I've had this car, and it wasn't a problem for me. I think most people just need to avoid accelerating too much. The MPG varies, but I can easily achieve 27 city mpg in FL, and I've achieved as high as 34mpg on the highway. It's really a great buy. The car is kind of a sleeper, you can drive it normally or give it hell and it will respond. It's very fun to drive. It's a shame they got rid of the ST option and the 2.3 I4..

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I've had for about four months now. Overall, I'm really happy with it, although I do wish I had opted for one with AC. It's a great value for what it is - a cheap, entry level car. I find it really fun to drive on back roads, and it can pass decently on the highway if you drop it into fourth going 60ish. The manual transmission and clutch are good, and I love how the back seats fold flat, giving my dogs plenty of room to hang out. I did install front seats from the 2004 SVT focus, which I'd recommend, since the ones that came stock weren't too supportive. While the acceleration isn't blistering by any means (I have the PZEV version, with only 130 horsepower), it's still a blast on windy roads. I get 23-24 mpg, all city driving. Thanks for listening!

The car was purchased new in 2006 and has had 4 sets of tires in only 120k, 3 alternators, and a messed up fuel tank vent where it would spit fuel back out of the tank at you. To top it all off, the cooling fan broke and jabbed through the radiator, costing me another 800$. Despite all these issues, the car has great gas mileage. However, the ride is not very comfortable. I knew the instant I found out it has a 'lifetime airfilter' that this was not the best vehicle for me. As soon as I get this radiator back together, I am trading it in for something that is worth my while!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information with you about the Ford Focus on-board computer. It's been designed to disengage the A/C compressor when accelerating, which can cause the A/C to blow warm air during this procedure. While this may not be too noticeable in some areas, it can be a real problem in hotter climates like Phoenix AZ. I understand how frustrating this can be, but please know that your dealer service department has checked the car and reports that everything is normal. In fact, FORD has even released a bulletin indicating that this is normal. I hope this information helps put your mind at ease. If you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. By the way, have you noticed any changes in your gas mileage? Take care!

I really like this car, especially how easy it is to maneuver in tight areas. Although the brakes are a bit noisy, I took it in for a check-up and was told that it's normal for this car. I do wish I got better gas mileage, and unfortunately, the back seats don't fold down flat as the dealer assured me they would.

During the first two years of ownership, my vehicle provided me with excellent service. However, I have experienced some issues since then. Fortunately, the transmission was replaced under warranty at 34,000 miles. Additionally, the headlights required replacement after three years. I have noticed that the trim clips are not very durable, and the starter battery, fuel line, and alternator have all required replacement. Unfortunately, repairing the bumper can be quite expensive, and the plastic gears for the armrest are prone to breaking, which can cost up to $500 to replace. Despite these issues, I have always had my vehicle serviced on schedule by Ford and have achieved good mileage. I purchased this vehicle with safety in mind, but it has had more problems than my friend's 2006 Focus hatchback. I am concerned about the brakes and exhaust and may consider contacting Ford directly.
