Ford Focus 2004 problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus 2004 problems
The Ford Focus 2004 has had its fair share of problems, with various issues affecting different models built at specific times. Here are some of the most common problems based on complaints from owners:
- Alternator problems: Some models built between June 1998 and March 1999 had alternator problems which resulted in short circuits, overheating, and even fires.
- Door latch problem: Some cars built between September and November 1998 had problems with their door latches which weren’t built to specification, preventing the doors from closing properly.
- Loss of engine power: The 1.6 petrol version of the Focus, built between January 1999 and January 2000, may exhibit engine cut outs, which are caused by a malfunction in the engine management software.
- Oil filler cap problem: Many 1998-2004 models had a oil filler caps which worked loose and allowed oil to drip onto the exhaust heat shield.
- Automatic gearbox problem: Damage to the crankshaft position sensor often led to engines cutting out; this specifically affected 1.6 petrol Focuses with automatic gearboxes built between August 1999 and February 2000.
- Wiper motor problem: Some early second-generation cars built between April 2003 and March 2005 had wiper motors which could overheat and fail due to water entering through the wiper arm spindle.
- Engine failure: A serious problem specific to 1.6 TDCi cars built between February and June 2004. Misaligned oil feeds reduced oil flow, causing premature wearing of the camshaft bearings and eventual engine seizure.
- Brake pedal sticking: Focuses built between November 2005 and December 2006 may exhibit problems with their brake pedals becoming stiff in cold weather, due to a non-return valve in the pump beginning to stick.
- Power steering problems: Models built between April and May 2008 could have had problems caused by inadequate power steering hoses, which degraded and allowed hydraulic fluid to seep out.
- Rear hub bolt problems: Some models built between February and April 2007 had problems with the rear hub bolts which could work loose because they weren’t made to the correct specification.
These issues have resulted in recalls, and the underlying problems should have been resolved by Ford themselves. However, it is still important for owners to be aware of these potential problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-07
- VIN: 1fafp34z94w
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 2004 ford focus started bucking a few years ago, on occasions only. For months there was no problem and than it would buck. If I shut off the engine and waited a few minutes and started it, it would drive without bucking. Recently, it stalled while driving. Fortunately, I was on a country road and could pull over to safety. Now, on occasion, it wont start. Locks in park. After a while, I can get it out of park and start it. I do not drive it on highways since I am fearful of it shutting off. I have been to three garages for service and they cannot figure it out. I even wrote to the corporate office to ask them to let me know what the problem is. On line many people with 2004 ford focus have the same problem. It isnt just my car. Corporate office answered my letter requesting the vin number on which I gave them. After that, I did not hear from them again. I would think that they would have followed through on this since I told them that it has happened to others with the same vehicle. It stalled again a few days ago as I drove in my driveway. Everytime I try to start it, I hear the clicking sound. I go out once in a while to see if it will start. Sometimes, while in park, it wont start. Another time checking it our, it will start. But, I am not driving it anywhere. I am having it towed to another garage to see if they can figure it out. This car has less than 60,000 miles on it and everything else is good. I have spent a lot of money trying to get this resolved. It has been on diagnostic machines and it doesnt show anything. All I wanted from the corporate office was an engineer to let me know how to fix it. They must have heard the complaints since there are many. A recall wont do me any good since I will be having it looked at again this week. I am doing this for others who have the same problem. However, I would like to know exactly what has caused this.

I opted for a wagon over an SUV as I have two kids and no longer own a Mustang. Being a frugal CPA, I didn't want to spend too much. The car handles well and has nice pickup for a small engine. However, as someone who is 6'3

This wagon holds a ton of stuff, which is perfect for our camping trip! There's plenty of room for everyone and everything we need. Plus, it's a zippy little vehicle that's easy to park in small spaces. We were pleasantly surprised by how smooth the ride is, especially for such a small car. It looks very sleek too, unlike some of the bulky SUVs we considered. And the fuel economy is great, which makes it an even better buy overall!

This car is such a joy to drive and own! I've even been able to haul considerably large loads in it - which has been really satisfying. While it does consume a bit more gas than my previous 15 year old compact sedan, it's still worth it for the overall experience. I do have to be careful though, as it has a tendency to reach high speeds before I know it - but that's just a testament to its power! The upholstery may not be the best, but the seat itself is really comfortable. And while I didn't have any options for better tires, the ride is still pretty smooth most of the time.

I bought this thing used in 2016 and it has been a reliable vehicle to this day, with only minimal issues such as electrical problems (lights and sensors), the AC stopped working a year after I purchased it, door handles breaking off (about two years ago), lock system failing (two months ago), and I replaced one of the original mufflers just this week. It handles very well in inclement weather conditions. I’m now at about 167,000 miles and it has lasted much longer than anticipated. Even though I have been very neglectful with upkeep including maintenance and routine washing, it still runs great. It will be a sad day when she dies, as she has served me well!

Hello! I've been driving this ZTS 5 spd sedan since President's Day 2004 and it has been a joy to own. It has 167,000 miles on it and has been trouble-free, except for a passenger side engine mount and later on the pcv hose, which I was able to fix myself. It's amazing that the car is still on its original brake pads up front, which are at 40% now. Can you believe it? The car is spotlessly clean and one of the most quick and nimble small cars I have ever driven. It loves curves while averaging 30 mpg, as it is 90% freeway driven. Now at 183,000 miles and still going strong!

The review by 'jonny' is spot on. I encountered the exact same problems on my SVT, plus pieces of body trim falling off at random intervals, leaving me with no front splitter and a Focus looking like a dump-truck in the front. So, I traded it in on a Mazda 3 because Ford did not bring the proper Mk. 2 Focus stateside. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I received this car from my brother when it had around 60K miles on it. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on soon after and the IMRC actuator was not working. The brake rotors wore out about every 20K miles, which I later found out is normal. At 119K, the IAC went bad, followed by a series of other issues such as fuel lines, fuel pump, MAF sensor, O2 sensors, and a bad catalytic converter. Even with new rotors and pads, the brakes still squealed. However, it was a great car until about 100K miles. On the other hand, my 93 Subaru has 180K miles on it and runs great with very few problems. It's unfortunate that American cars can't seem to compete with Japanese cars made in America. By the way, the air filter is considered

This car has been a bit of a money pit. If you plan on using it frequently, you may run into some issues. Unfortunately, the mileage is below average for a small car, and on my last trip, I couldn't even get 30 mpg on the highway or 22-23 mpg in the city. Additionally, the transmission fluid needs to be changed every 40k miles, and it's synthetic, which can cost over $200. The alternator went out at 48k miles, and it's difficult for an owner to replace since the engine must be jacked up to release it. This means that you're looking at a cost of $400-700 for labor and parts. The ignition lock also seized at 45k miles, and it must be towed to the dealer to be fixed due to the anti-theft chip. This will cost around $500. Currently, at 56k miles, the thermostat housing and valve cover gasket are leaking, which will cost around $500 for parts and labor. Despite these issues, I hope this information helps you make an informed decision about this car.

I really enjoyed my Focus during the first year of ownership. The handling was great! However, I did experience some issues with the engine after that. Unfortunately, I was informed that the problem was due to my use of premium gas instead of regular, which resulted in me having to pay around $550 for repairs without warranty coverage. Four months later, I had to pay $500 for brake repairs. A year later, I experienced issues with the brakes again, as well as some problems with the engine injection. I suspect that the injection issue was related to the same problem as before, but fortunately, it was covered by a recall (one of seven recalls that have been issued since I purchased the car). The brake repairs cost me an additional $650. I have decided to sell the car, and I do not plan on purchasing another Ford, let alone another Focus.

I purchased this car brand new from the lot in May 2004. Despite having only 39,000 miles on it due to a work injury, I have had to replace the transmission, ignition, tires, and brakes, costing me a total of $7,500. Unfortunately, my experience with this Ford car has been extremely disappointing and I will not be purchasing from them again.
