Ford Focus 2002 problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus 2002 problems
The Ford Focus, built in 2002, is known to have several common problems that affect its performance and safety. One of the most prevalent issues is related to the engine, where the Zetec engine tends to misfire and occasionally judder when driving. This problem is caused by either a defective Mass Air Flow sensor or a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, which can be challenging to diagnose as it does not register as a fault code on the ECU.
Another engine-related problem is that the engine occasionally cuts out, which affects the 1.6 petrol Ford Focus built between January 1999 and January 2000. This issue is caused by a software problem and can be resolved by reinstalling the powertrain control module software at a Ford dealer.
The Focus built in March 1999 had recurring problems with the restraint system and airbags. The front and side airbags were known to deploy incorrectly, and the seatbelt pre-tensioners were ineffective due to a control module fault. This problem was subject to a recall by Ford in 2000, and it should no longer be an issue on this car.
The brake hose was known to rub against the inside of the rear wheel arch on the Focus RS, built in December 2002. This was a manufacturing fault and was subject to a recall by Ford. If the car was not part of the recall, the brake hose may need to be replaced.
A lot of the Focuses built from March 1998 onwards had issues with the oil filler cap, which became loose and caused a leak of oil onto the exhaust heat shield. This problem was also subject to a recall by Ford in 2000.
Some Focus models built between September and November 1998 could have door latch issues due to a small plastic piece being which resulted in the door not closing properly. This was subject to a recall by Ford and should already be fixed on your car.
The Focus model built between 1998 and 1999 has been known to suffer from alternator troubles, relating to short circuiting or overheating. This was usually caused by a faulty harness which caused the cable to come loose. This problem was a manufacturer's fault which was then subject to a recall by Ford.
The key to your Ford Focus is stuck in the ignition and won't come out. This issue is covered in the manufacturer warranty, but it tends to happen later on. It's an issue that's quite common on Focus cars built between 2000 and 2003, and you can tell it's going to happen if you've noticed that the key is getting harder to turn. In most cases, you will need to call out a locksmith, but this will only be a temporary fix. For something more long-term, you'll need to find a replacement Strattec cylinder that doesn't have the sidebar, which we stock. Then, replace the ignition cylinder with your replacement part.
The control module is overheating, sometimes to the point where it's too hot to touch. This problem affects Focus 1.6 TDCi estates that were built between 2004 and 2006. This is a cooling fan problem that can cause corrosion on the engine, particularly on salty roads, leading to more severe damage to the control module.
The Focus is prone to rust, especially in the Salt Belt. The cambelt is also a common problem, with many falling into disrepair as they become uneconomical to maintain. A cambelt change can cost as much as the entire car is worth, which is why many owners take the risk and don't bother having the work done. If the engine light comes on with a 'code 420', it means the catalytic convertor has gone, and it's likely to be cheaper to throw away the car and buy another one.
Electronic items are prone to failing, so don't ignore any warning lights. Water ingress in the head and tail lights is also common and can lead to blown bulbs. Quickclear windscreen elements are known to fail, so put an ice scraper in the glovebox for the winter.
In summary, the Ford Focus 2002 has several common problems, including engine misfiring, engine cuts out, airbag problems, brake hose issues, oil filler cap problems, door latch problems, alternator problems, key stuck in ignition, overheating control module, rust, and electronic items prone to failing. Owners of this car should be aware of these issues and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the longevity of the vehicle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 3FAHP37352R
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I HAVE A 2002 FORD FOCUS ZX5, MY DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AT A SPEED OF 35 MPH WITH ABSOLUTELY NO IMPACT TO THE CAR. DUE TO IT DEPLOYING AND GOING OFF IT HAD HIT MY LEFT SHOULDER AND CAUSED ME TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT, IF IT WASN'T FOR THE FACT THAT I WAS ALREADY IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE I WOULD'VE CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE AND CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AS THIS ALSO HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF "RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC". I HAVE READ ON OTHER WEBSITES WHERE 2004 AND 2006'S SAME AIR BAGS HAVE DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON W/O ANY KIND OF IMPACT. THE NOISE WAS SO LOUD IN MY LEFT EAR THAT I COULD NOT HEAR OUT OF IT FOR OVER 45MINS, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THAT WOULD'VE DONE TO MY INFANT IF THEY WOULD'VE BEEN IN THE CAR AT THAT TIME. I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER AS I AM 5MONTHS PREGNANT AND IF THE FRONT AIR BAG WOULD'VE GONE OFF IT COULD'VE CAUSED MUCH MORE INJURY TO ME AND MY UNBORN CHILD. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND CONSIDER HAVING THIS MODEL PUT ON THE RECALL LIST.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-17
- VIN: 1FAFP34P62W
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I AM WRITING THIS FOR TWO INCIDENTS HAPPENED WITHIN A TWO WEEK TIME FRAME. 1. THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED SINCE ONE PISTON PIN HAD BROKEN DUE TO WHICH THE WHOLE PISTON HAD BROKEN INSIDE THE ENGINE. THE WHOLE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED AS PER MECHANICS SUGGESTION. I HAVE THE INVOICE FROM THE MECHANIC SHOP AND THE MECHANIC WOULD GLADLY PROVIDE MORE DETAILS IF NEEDED. 2. THIS WAS SCARY ! WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MILES AN HOUR ON CRUISE,THE CAR WOULD NOT COME OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL AND CONSTANTLY ACCELERATED EVEN AFTER TRYING TO USE BRAKES. (IDEALLY WHEN YOU FIRST TOUCH THE BRAKES, THE CAR SHOULD COME OUT OF CRUISE) ONCE THE CAR REACHED AT A SPEED OF 80 MILES AND I COULD NOT DO ANYTHING. WHEN THE CAR WAS SHUT DOWN ABNORMALLY, AND RESTARTED THE ISSUE CONTINUED AND EVEN WHEN IT WAS IN NEUTRAL, IT CONSTANTLY RAVED UP. I SEE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE RECENTLY FILED COMPLAINS FOR THIS AND EXPECT THE NHTSA TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT URGENTLY AS IN MY OPINION IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. THE MECHANIC MENTIONED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WAS STUCK IN THE HOUSING. CURRENTLY THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED BY MY MECHANIC AND I HAVE BOUGHT A NEW CRUISE CONTROL CABLE FROM THE DEALER AND HOPE TO GET IT FIXED SOON, HOWEVER EXPECT THE COMPANY TO TAKE CARE OF BOTH OF THE ABOVE ISSUES.

This car is fantastic! It has impressive performance, going from 0-60 in about 9 seconds, which is amazing for such a small car. Additionally, it is incredibly fuel-efficient, and I have saved a fortune on gas. Hooray!

My car is amazing! She never complains, even when she sleeps outside every night. She handles the cold and hot weather like a pro and carries me smoothly mile after mile. The only issue I've noticed is that her front end sits low to the ground, leaving the radiator and condenser vulnerable to small creatures. I hope they redesign the protection for these parts with a deflector or stronger bracket. Overall, I absolutely love my Focus and it's the most dependable car I've ever owned!

I've owned this car for over 5 years now and it's been an overall great experience. Even with over 82,000 miles, I still get over 29 miles per gallon and the engine still runs strong. The only issue I've had was a faulty spark plug, but that's just regular maintenance. I highly recommend going for a one or two year old domestic car - you get a new car at a fraction of the cost!

The Ford Focus is not your everyday Ford. Despite what some people may say about Fords being bad cars and making up lies about them having a lot of recalls, every other car maker has recalls too. They just don't get as much attention. But anyway, I think the Focus is awesome. The handling is great, the ride is smooth, and the style is totally different from any other car out there, which is what appeals to me. If you're thinking about buying one, I highly recommend taking one for a spin! You won't be disappointed.

This is a wonderful car! I'm so glad I bought it brand new in 2002. Despite having been in 3 fairly major wrecks, this car held up extremely well and kept me protected! I've had to replace a few things here and there, but nothing major so far. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and I'm looking forward to purchasing a new Focus in 2012 when the new design comes out!

When my wife had an accident with her 2000 Cavalier, we needed a car urgently. We found a car that had all the features, storage, and price that met her needs. Although I had poor experiences with Ford in the eighties, this car has been a pleasant surprise. We have driven over 80,000 miles in it (we bought it with 79,000 miles), and it has been the most reliable Ford I've ever owned. We have had very little repair work done. The car handles nimbly for a wagon and accelerates well. The only drawbacks are the poor thigh support in the front seats, which makes drives longer than 90 minutes uncomfortable, and the poor gas mileage for a 4-cylinder car. This car gets roughly 25-26 mpg in a 70/30 mix of city/highway driving.

Although some people may have had positive experiences with this car, my personal experience has been disappointing. Despite being a conservative driver, I have had multiple issues with the fuel mileage, stalling, and downshifting. Even after taking it to the dealer multiple times, the issues persist. While I initially trusted Ford's improvements, this car has not lived up to my expectations. In comparison, my 16-year-old Camry with 160,000 miles is more reliable and fuel-efficient. For those considering this car, I recommend thoroughly checking it before purchasing. Additionally, the 16-inch rims can make new tires more expensive, so it may be worth considering the other model with 15-inch rims to save money.

Although my experience with this car has been disappointing, I must say that it has its limitations. The car handles well in good weather, but it struggles in wet or snowy conditions, making it difficult to drive at speeds over 35 miles per hour. Additionally, the cost of new tires for this car is quite high, which is not ideal. However, I believe that with proper maintenance and care, this car can still be a reliable mode of transportation. Thank you for considering my feedback.

I've owned my car for 6 years and have had only a couple of problems with it, which were fixed and over with. Fortunately, the issues were resolved quickly. There was a leak of hydraulic fluid into the driver footwell that required the alternator and master cylinder be replaced (I didn't recognize the signs before the alternator started to go). Later parts of the front suspension had to be replaced as they were locked up and noisy (about $200 for each of these jobs). I've never had the tire troubles people write about. To avoid any potential issues, I recommend getting the Lifetime alignment at Discount Tires and taking it in as soon as you get the car. I've read that it came out of the factory with the rear tires out of alignment, which may be causing all the tire problems. Let me know if you have any questions!

My experience with the Focus wagon was extremely bad. Although it was a nice car, it was highly unreliable and required frequent visits to the shop, starting from the first week of purchase. The car had multiple issues, including electrical problems, front brake problems, and cooling problems, which the dealer was unable to fix even during the warranty period.
