The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

- Summary: The driver airbag light keeps going off and on. I went to ford dealer shop to fix it. Only shortly after it came back on. I tried different tricks online and they dont last long. This is a common issue among ford focus owners. The connection plug from airbag to the steering wheel is bad and it just loses connection from time to time. Focus owners cant just DIY sensitive parts like airbag to temporarly fix it nor can we spend big bucks to visit dealersshop everytime. They charged me $140 just look at my car. And told me $700 for airbag replacement, when all that needs replacing is the faulty connecting plug. Ford knows this but is getting away with jeopordizing with customers lives for money. Please make this recall issue so ford will fix for all focus owners before people dies from this well known focus issue because the driverside airbag failes to deploy. Please.

THE GAS PEDAL, ALSO, GETS STUCK, REGULARLY, I WOULD HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WITH MY PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL TO AVOID HITTING ANYTHING. RECENTLY, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THE MOTOR IS STILL WORKING. I PURCHASED MY 2007 FF IN 2011, PAID IT OFF IN 2016. IT NOW HAS OVER 235K MILES ON IT. WHILE ALL THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN A NUISANCE TO CONTEND WITH IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO OWN. EACH LEFT TIRE RAN OVER THE UNCOVERED WATER VALVE. THERE WAS A LOUD POP, AND I BLACKED OUT. THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT AFTER THE LEFT FRONT TIRE SUSTAINED DAMAGE THAT RESULTED IN A FLAT TIRE SHORTLY THEREAFTER. ALSO, THE AIR BAG IN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BACK OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT DEPLOYED AND HIT ME IN THE HEAD, CAUSING ME TO BLACK OUT, AND PRODUCING AMNESIA AND OTHER MENTAL SYMPTOMS THAT LINGERED FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IN ADDITION, I SUFFERED NECK AND BACK INJURIES FROM WHIPLASH. THE AIR BAG SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TRIGGERED BY AN UNDER-WHEEL IMPACT AT SUCH A LOW SPEED.

IN THE MEANTIME, I'VE BEEN LOOKING UP VARIOUS COMPLAINTS AND ISSUES WITH MY 2007 FORD FOCUS AND NOT STATING THE SPECIFIC ISSUES AND THE TWO MAIN COMPLAINTS AND RECALLS THAT KEEP COMING UPSTATE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS AIRBAGS AND FUEL SYSTEM ISSUES. THESE ARE BOTH THE ISSUES I'M HAVING. THE AIRBAGS LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND OFF WITHOUT THE SYSTEM BEING RESET. THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND HASN'T GONE OFF. IT CAME ON WHEN MY HUSBAND FILLED THE TANK UP ABOUT 3-4 WEEKS AGO. THE ONLY REASON WE'VE NOT HAD MY MECHANIC LOOK AT IS DUE TO INCOME. I'M DISABLED, MY HUSBAND IS IN THE PROCESS OF RETIRING IN SEPTEMBER AND HE WAS INJURED ON THE JOB AND HAS BEEN OUT FOR ABOUT 5 MONTHS. Our experience with this car has been fantastic so far! Our car has heated leather seats (in a Focus?), a sunroof, a Sony Audiophile 6-disc changer and subwoofer, side impact airbags, 4-wheel ABS, and all other standard features. Show me a Corolla or Civic with this much bang for the buck! It rides softly in the straights and firmly in the turns. On top of this, the ST is rated at 22/32 mpg. We even averaged 32.4 mpg on our first tank, which is above EPA ratings!

Your 2007 Ford Focus sounds like a great car! It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying driving it so much. With 26mpg of combined highway and city mileage, it's definitely an efficient choice. It's great to hear that the car has a lot of zip around town and on the highway, and that it's nice and quiet. Purchased in October 2006 and have been driving for about two months. I absolutely love the Audiophile system, it rocks! The moonroof is superb and the ABS braking system is outstanding. I'm getting about 26-35 mpg which is great. This car is so much fun to drive and extremely comfortable. With the side airbags, I feel safer than ever.

I believe that my experience with the 2007 model of this car may not be representative of every car of this make and model. My first car was a 1996 Mazda Protege that my father gave me, and it lasted for a long time with minimal issues. However, my experience with this Focus was not as positive. I purchased it from CarMax, which I would not recommend, as it had several issues that they did not disclose or fix. Despite a great test drive, the alternator went bad within a week and the car died on the side of the road. The power steering also went out shortly after. Although CarMax did fix these issues under warranty, the car continued to have problems. As an Uber driver, I was required to have a safety inspection, but the car failed due to a hole in the exhaust. The entire exhaust manifold needed to be replaced, which was very expensive and not covered by CarMax's warranty. I had to make many frequent and costly trips to the mechanic over the next three years.I had a really tough time with my car. It seemed like every time I fixed one thing, something else would break. Even though I took good care of it, the check engine light kept coming on and I had to replace a lot of parts. When it was working properly, it was a lot of fun to drive and had great acceleration, but unfortunately the problems outweighed the positives. I started to feel unsafe and didn't trust that I would make it to my destination. Eventually, I decided to trade it in and move on. I don't hold any grudges against Ford, I just think I got unlucky with a bad car. Lesson learned - if things start to go wrong, it's better to cut your losses and move on.

Despite visiting multiple Ford dealerships over the course of 4 years, the engineering and customer service have been poor. Additionally, the transmission has had ongoing issues since delivery. On the good side, this car is still running at 190,000 mi. However, it has required a ton of repairs and the parts are expensive. The most costly repairs so far were a bad steering column and airbag. I also noticed some design issues that make me wonder if the engineers intentionally made it difficult to work on. Although I used to be a believer in Ford, my recent experiences have changed my opinion.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in March 2008 and it has been running smoothly until January of this year when it hit 50000 miles. Unfortunately, I ran into a few issues such as the alternator going out and causing a hole in the battery. Additionally, due to the car being mostly plastic, a small fender bender resulted in having to replace large sidings of the vehicle, which cost me over $800 for the bumper. While driving, my tensioner idle pulley froze up and broke, causing my belt to come off. It was quite a hassle to get it towed and replace the pulley and belt, especially since there was no space to work with. The alternator is located underneath the engine in the back, and to replace the belt, you have to remove the heat shield, alternator, and reservoir, only to realize that you have very few inches to work with. Despite these issues, I still love my car and hope to keep it running for many more years to come!

The exhaust on this car is quite loud and can be a disturbance to my neighbours in the morning when I start it up. Additionally, the seats are not very comfortable and the exhaust fumes can enter the cabin even if the intake/air conditioning is off, which can be unpleasant when sitting behind other cars at a stop light. Overall, I would not recommend purchasing this car. It seems that Ford may have overlooked quality in this model.
