Ford Focus problems

The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus problems
The Ford Focus has been a popular car choice for many drivers, but it has had its fair share of problems over the years. This article will explore some of the most common problems with the Ford Focus, based on complaints from owners.
- Door Latch Problem: Some cars built between September and November 1998 had problems with their door latches which weren’t built to specification, preventing the doors from closing properly. This could be a significant safety concern, as it could lead to the doors opening during driving.
- Loss of Engine Power: The 1.6 petrol version of the Focus, built between January 1999 and January 2000, may exhibit engine cut outs, which are caused by a malfunction in the engine management software. This issue could lead to a loss of power while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Oil Filler Cap Problem: Many 1998-2004 models had a oil filler caps which worked loose and allowed oil to drip onto the exhaust heat shield. This could lead to a fire hazard, as well as a decrease in engine performance.
- Automatic Gearbox Problem: Damage to the crankshaft position sensor often led to engines cutting out, specifically affecting 1.6 petrol Focuses with automatic gearboxes built between August 1999 and February 2000. This issue could lead to a loss of power while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Wiper Motor Problem: Some early second-generation cars built between April 2003 and March 2005 had wiper motors which could overheat and fail due to water entering through the wiper arm spindle. This issue could lead to a loss of visibility while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Engine Failure: A serious problem specific to 1.6 TDCi cars built between February and June 2004. Misaligned oil feeds reduced oil flow, causing premature wearing of the camshaft bearings and eventual engine seizure. This issue could lead to a complete engine failure, which would be costly to repair.
- Brake Pedal Sticking: Focuses built between November 2005 and December 2006 may exhibit problems with their brake pedals becoming stiff in cold weather, due to a non-return valve in the pump began to stick. This issue could lead to a decrease in braking performance, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Power Steering Problems: Models built between April and May 2008 could have had problems caused by inadequate power steering hoses, which degraded and allowed hydraulic fluid to seep out. This issue could lead to a loss of power steering, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Rear Hub Bolt Problems: Some models built between February and April 2007 had problems with the rear hub bolts which could work loose because they weren’t made to the correct specification. This issue could lead to a loss of control while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
In addition to these issues, the Ford Focus has also been known to have problems with its dual-clutch automatic transmission, which can cause fluctuating engine revolutions per minute (RPM), pre-ignition at low speeds, and engine stalling. These issues can be particularly problematic for new drivers, as they can make the car difficult to control.
Overall, while the Ford Focus has been a popular car choice for many drivers, it is important to be aware of these common problems. If you are considering purchasing a Ford Focus, it may be worth having the car inspected by a mechanic to ensure that these issues have been addressed. Additionally, if you are already a Ford Focus owner, it may be worth keeping an eye out for these issues and addressing them as soon as possible to ensure the safety and reliability of your vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
- VIN: 1FADP3K2XEL
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2014 Ford Focus due to recurring error codes P0456 (Very Small Leak Detected), P1450 (Unable to Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum), and P2190 (System Too Rich at Idle). These issues relate to the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) and fuel tank system, which have caused symptoms such as intermittent Check Engine Light warnings, fuel odor, and difficulty refueling. These problems were confirmed by an independent service center during diagnostic testing, but the dealership refused to perform a goodwill fix, citing that my vehicle is not currently included in related recalls. This is particularly concerning because a large number of 2014 Ford Focus vehicles—approximately 1.5 million—have been recalled for similar issues with the EVAP and fuel systems, which pose risks such as fuel vapor leaks and stalling due to fuel system pressure irregularities. Although my VIN is not listed under the recall, the identical symptoms strongly suggest my vehicle should be included. I have not had the vehicle inspected by Ford or other representatives, but I urge NHTSA to investigate further as this is a significant safety concern that endangers me and others on the road.

- Summary: I am the owner of a 2014 Ford Focus VIN [XXX] . I have had the car into an Authorized Ford Dealership numerous times. On the 2nd to last visit the Transmission Control Module was replaced at no cost to me. However, since then the transmission has malfunctioned again. It lurches, loses power and stalls. I took it back to the Ford Dealer and was told I needed a new transmission. I blame this on the extended length of time it took the Ford Motor Company to get the TCM and schedule the replacement. Am I entitled to any compensation or a buyback from Ford? What other steps can be taken to resolve my issue? Thank you for your time. - Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
- VIN: 1FADP3K27EL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The warranty was extended on the transmission control module (TCM) instead of a recall. Symptoms of the TCM include “intermittent loss of transmission engagement while driving, no start, or lack of power”. All potentially very dangerous in my opinion. It is also my opinion (and others) that a failing TCM can harm the clutch. My TCM was reprogrammed in 2019 and the clutch (under warranty at the time) was replaced. Last week the TCM was replaced at no charge and the clutch was replaced again but at a cost of $3,571.77 this time. I was driving on an interstate highway when a warning light came on and minutes later the car went into neutral. Fortunately for me I was able to get off an exit and pull over on the exit ramp shoulder. I see online that many others are having similar problems. Some might not be as lucky as I was.

I bought the SES because of the standard fun stuff, plus the availability of ABS and side curtain airbags. The Pirelli tires on 16 inch rims are an added bonus.

The 2.3 engine may not be as economical as the 2.0, but it offers a quick and smooth ride. Optional features such as a moonroof and/or sports package give the car a lot of character. The stock radio with CD has great sound quality, and the heat and air conditioning work great. The trunk is larger than it looks, and with fold-down seats, it can haul many things. The more passengers, the better the ride. On the downside, it may have blind spots during rain and snow storms, and it may slide, causing higher insurance premiums. However, the vehicle braking has been improved in 2005 models. The color choices are fair, and the wipers don't overlap well, causing a restricted view at times (fair weather car). Overall, this is an affordable, fun-to-drive small car with a lot of room inside.

Vehicle year: 2013
Your car sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it. The handling is superb, road noise is low and the gas mileage is incredible for a non-hybrid (about 39-40 MPG @ 70 mph, 34-35 MPG @ 75 mph) - literally 25-30% higher than your similar sized 07' Mazda3. Even though the automatic transmission gets a lot of bad press, it's a dual clutch system, which causes adjacent gears to spool up before being engaged. This creates some vibration feedback that's consistent with most manual cars you've driven. However, the efficiency gains this setup provides are worth it. Plus, you can drop the car into 'S' sport mode and the tranny responds with sharper shifts. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with your car!

I'm also impressed by the 36-42MPG you're getting on mostly highway driving - that's fantastic! Adding a K&N air filter was a smart move to boost the MPG even further. It's good to know that the car has a nice peppy feel to it and doesn't feel underpowered like some other small cars. Overall, it sounds like a great choice for anyone looking for a good gas saver. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us!

This was my first car at 16 and I still own it today. As you can imagine, a 16-year-old with a modified SVT Focus tends to think he is Ken Block. So, my Focus has had a lot of abuse and I feel my review has some merit for a daily driven and hooned Focus. The car has never left me stranded but requires some timely maintenance. Common repairs for this car, other than wear and tear, include the thermostat housing. The car would idle at 2k when first started, but I had Ford re-flash the ECU with an updated control map and fixed the problem (which is a common and known issue). I also had some odd issues with the ignition coil cutting off #4 cylinder, which I resolved by replacing it with an aftermarket MSD. Additionally, I had to replace the wheel bearing, cracked control arm, and engine mounts due to wear and tear.

I bought my vehicle brand new in January 2017, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with the transmission shuddering. Despite having the same part 'fixed' three times by two different Ford dealerships, the shudder returns within a few weeks of each repair. It's frustrating that Ford won't authorize the replacement of the part until the shudder is felt every time the gas pedal is touched. I know of three other individuals who have had similar experiences with their Focus between the years 2012-2016. I reached out to Ford to discuss my options, but unfortunately, the regional customer service representative was difficult to reach and didn't seem to have much time for me. I was disappointed that my biggest question about what to do when my warranty runs out and I have to pay for these repairs out of pocket was ignored. I believe that Ford should take responsibility for their mistake and provide better customer service to their loyal customers.

I purchased a 2012 Ford Focus and unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. I have experienced some issues with the transmission, which has resulted in two recalls within a year. Recently, I had to take it in for repairs on my own. While I have had some difficulties with this vehicle, I would recommend considering a Corolla as an alternative. I previously owned one and it was one of the best cars I have ever had. Although I have some regrets about my purchase, I believe that the F-150 is a reliable vehicle made by Ford.

I purchased this car back in 2007 with only 30k miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to replace the transmission before it hit 70k miles, which set me back about $1200. While previous reviews about the interior being noisy are accurate, there are still many things to appreciate about this car. Although the gas mileage is lower than what I expected, it still gets me where I need to go. While there have been some minor issues with the car, such as the vent selector switch breaking and the armrest being flimsy, these are all things that can be fixed. I have yet to get the vent selector switch fixed, so I am uncertain what it will cost, but I am confident that it will be resolved soon. Additionally, while it takes a bit longer to warm up during the winter and sometimes has issues starting cold, it always eventually starts. Overall, it's not a terrible car, but if you have the budget, I would recommend buying something better.

I purchased my Focus as a used car with 20k miles. Unfortunately, the tires were not in great condition, so I replaced them. Since I drive 100-150 miles daily, I needed a car with good fuel economy. On the highway, it gets about 30-35 miles per gallon, but much less in town. Overall, I haven't had many issues with the car, except for the transmission going out at 93,000 miles. I always make sure to take it to the dealer's service department for oil changes and check-ups, and they have been very helpful. However, the car has been with the dealer since March 17th, and they have tried three transmissions, none of which have worked. I authorized a new transmission, but for some reason, the dealer's service department is hesitant to install it. It has been almost two months, and I still haven't received a replacement. I am considering giving the car to the dealer and purchasing a Toyota instead.

This car has been very well maintained and garaged, with only 56,000 miles on it. However, during a recent drive, the tank fell down and was dragging on the ground, which was a scary experience. Fortunately, some kind mechanics were able to fix the issue by re-securing the tank. It was discovered that the front bolt had come out and was bolted into the wrong hole, one with no threads. It's important to note that Consumer Reports rates this car, year, and model as one of the most unreliable. Please keep this in mind when considering a purchase.
