Ford Focus problems

The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus problems
The Ford Focus has been a popular car choice for many drivers, but it has had its fair share of problems over the years. This article will explore some of the most common problems with the Ford Focus, based on complaints from owners.
- Door Latch Problem: Some cars built between September and November 1998 had problems with their door latches which weren’t built to specification, preventing the doors from closing properly. This could be a significant safety concern, as it could lead to the doors opening during driving.
- Loss of Engine Power: The 1.6 petrol version of the Focus, built between January 1999 and January 2000, may exhibit engine cut outs, which are caused by a malfunction in the engine management software. This issue could lead to a loss of power while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Oil Filler Cap Problem: Many 1998-2004 models had a oil filler caps which worked loose and allowed oil to drip onto the exhaust heat shield. This could lead to a fire hazard, as well as a decrease in engine performance.
- Automatic Gearbox Problem: Damage to the crankshaft position sensor often led to engines cutting out, specifically affecting 1.6 petrol Focuses with automatic gearboxes built between August 1999 and February 2000. This issue could lead to a loss of power while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Wiper Motor Problem: Some early second-generation cars built between April 2003 and March 2005 had wiper motors which could overheat and fail due to water entering through the wiper arm spindle. This issue could lead to a loss of visibility while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Engine Failure: A serious problem specific to 1.6 TDCi cars built between February and June 2004. Misaligned oil feeds reduced oil flow, causing premature wearing of the camshaft bearings and eventual engine seizure. This issue could lead to a complete engine failure, which would be costly to repair.
- Brake Pedal Sticking: Focuses built between November 2005 and December 2006 may exhibit problems with their brake pedals becoming stiff in cold weather, due to a non-return valve in the pump began to stick. This issue could lead to a decrease in braking performance, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Power Steering Problems: Models built between April and May 2008 could have had problems caused by inadequate power steering hoses, which degraded and allowed hydraulic fluid to seep out. This issue could lead to a loss of power steering, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
- Rear Hub Bolt Problems: Some models built between February and April 2007 had problems with the rear hub bolts which could work loose because they weren’t made to the correct specification. This issue could lead to a loss of control while driving, which could be dangerous in certain situations.
In addition to these issues, the Ford Focus has also been known to have problems with its dual-clutch automatic transmission, which can cause fluctuating engine revolutions per minute (RPM), pre-ignition at low speeds, and engine stalling. These issues can be particularly problematic for new drivers, as they can make the car difficult to control.
Overall, while the Ford Focus has been a popular car choice for many drivers, it is important to be aware of these common problems. If you are considering purchasing a Ford Focus, it may be worth having the car inspected by a mechanic to ensure that these issues have been addressed. Additionally, if you are already a Ford Focus owner, it may be worth keeping an eye out for these issues and addressing them as soon as possible to ensure the safety and reliability of your vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
- VIN: 1FADP3K2XEL
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2014 Ford Focus due to recurring error codes P0456 (Very Small Leak Detected), P1450 (Unable to Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum), and P2190 (System Too Rich at Idle). These issues relate to the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) and fuel tank system, which have caused symptoms such as intermittent Check Engine Light warnings, fuel odor, and difficulty refueling. These problems were confirmed by an independent service center during diagnostic testing, but the dealership refused to perform a goodwill fix, citing that my vehicle is not currently included in related recalls. This is particularly concerning because a large number of 2014 Ford Focus vehicles—approximately 1.5 million—have been recalled for similar issues with the EVAP and fuel systems, which pose risks such as fuel vapor leaks and stalling due to fuel system pressure irregularities. Although my VIN is not listed under the recall, the identical symptoms strongly suggest my vehicle should be included. I have not had the vehicle inspected by Ford or other representatives, but I urge NHTSA to investigate further as this is a significant safety concern that endangers me and others on the road.

- Summary: I am the owner of a 2014 Ford Focus VIN [XXX] . I have had the car into an Authorized Ford Dealership numerous times. On the 2nd to last visit the Transmission Control Module was replaced at no cost to me. However, since then the transmission has malfunctioned again. It lurches, loses power and stalls. I took it back to the Ford Dealer and was told I needed a new transmission. I blame this on the extended length of time it took the Ford Motor Company to get the TCM and schedule the replacement. Am I entitled to any compensation or a buyback from Ford? What other steps can be taken to resolve my issue? Thank you for your time. Ford Focus 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
- VIN: 1FADP3K27EL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The warranty was extended on the transmission control module (TCM) instead of a recall. Symptoms of the TCM include “intermittent loss of transmission engagement while driving, no start, or lack of power”. All potentially very dangerous in my opinion. It is also my opinion (and others) that a failing TCM can harm the clutch. My TCM was reprogrammed in 2019 and the clutch (under warranty at the time) was replaced. Last week the TCM was replaced at no charge and the clutch was replaced again but at a cost of $3,571.77 this time. I was driving on an interstate highway when a warning light came on and minutes later the car went into neutral. Fortunately for me I was able to get off an exit and pull over on the exit ramp shoulder. I see online that many others are having similar problems. Some might not be as lucky as I was.

Vehicle year: 2004
I purchased my 2004 Focus ZTS in December 2007 with 60K miles. It's a nice car, but unfortunately, it had been in a few fender benders, causing the front bumper to be installed incorrectly. After going through two sets of four tires, I discovered that the rims were bent. However, the rims are the rarest of Ford Focus ZTS rims, with a wide 5-spoke design and a slit in the middle, which is a nice touch. The 4-disc in-dash CD changer didn't work when I bought the car, but I replaced it with a DD Kenwood that sounds great! Since purchasing the car, I have experienced some electrical issues that no one has been able to figure out. I have noticed that other owners of this make and model have had the same problem with lights flickering all the time. Overall, this car has some great get-up-and-go for its engine size.

Vehicle year: 2005
Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 05 Focus that I bought back in 06. I've driven almost 100,000 miles on it and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues with it. Of course, I did have to replace the rack and pinion and wheels after hitting a nasty pothole (thanks, Michigan!), and the CD player had to be replaced twice while it was still under warranty. But since then, it's been smooth sailing! The car drives and handles really nicely, and the interior is surprisingly roomy and comfortable for a compact car. Plus, the gas mileage is great - I average 30 mpg in the city! Overall, I think this is an outstanding vehicle for its class and price. The design is really good and it's definitely worth every penny - which is more than I can say for most cars out there.

I have owned a 2003, 2004 and a 2006 Focus and I have enjoyed driving each one. In contrast, my Ford 500 sits in the garage most of the time. I find the Focus to be a really fun car to drive!

I bought my 2008 Ford Focus used to replace my 200 ZX3 that was written off by the insurance company. Although it's not a sports car, it performs very well in both city and highway driving. Overall, the car is very comfortable and quiet. The Sync system is relatively easy to use, but it does have some quirks. For example, when I use the iPod connection and drive to my destination, turn off the car, and then restart it, the Sync system does not recognize my iPod and I have to scroll through the menu to get it back. Sometimes, it even refuses to reconnect. I do wish there was a trunk release button in the cabin, other than using just the key and the remote fob. But other than that, I am very pleased with it.

The take offs are terrible and the wheels shake as if they are falling off.

In mid-2019, I found myself in need of a cheap car and stumbled upon a used 2010 Focus SES with only 38k original miles on it in California from a private party on CL for $6000. Although I wasn't initially interested in a Ford Focus, this car was too good of a deal to pass up. It had been sitting in a garage for years and was in impeccable condition with no accidents, all service records from Ford, and a flawless black interior. The dark gray paint, factory aluminum rims, and Goodyear tires were all like new. I've put about 10k miles on it since then and it's been a decent car overall. While it's not the best car I've ever driven, it certainly gets the job done. I did have some issues with the motor mount and upper and lower transmission mounts, which was frustrating, but overall it's been a reliable car. I've read some reviews from people who absolutely love this car, but I think it's important to note that these are likely not people who are into cars or have driven high-end automobiles. If it weren't for the COVID crisis, I may have sold this car months ago, but for now, it's serving its purpose. Although I did have some trouble finding a high-quality aftermarket motor mount fix for the vibrating problem, I'm still happy with my purchase.I recently purchased all 3 mounts OEM from Ford and replaced them myself, which did help with the vibration issue. However, due to the poor design, I suspect the problem will return. Additionally, I encountered an issue with the lug nuts when attempting to rotate the tires. After some research, I discovered that the stock lug nuts have a thin steel jacket that can accumulate moisture over time, causing them to swell. I had to cut off each jacket and purchase a new set of proper lug nuts for the car. Unfortunately, I also noticed that the paint on the stock aluminum rims was peeling off in large flakes, which seems to be a common problem. I had to take each wheel off, sand and repaint them myself. Recently, I have noticed a rough idle when at a stop light or drive through, which I suspect is due to rotting vacuum lines. I plan to use a can of carb cleaner to pinpoint the leaks. Lastly, there are rattling heat shields along the exhaust system that I need to tend to. Despite these issues, I still enjoy owning this car and plan to address any future problems as they arise.I wouldn't recommend this vehicle. In a few months, I'm going to put this car up for sale and be done with it. While some people may like this car, I know my cars and I believe there are better options in this class. If you have the means, I suggest going for a Honda or Toyota instead.

Our automatic transmission is experiencing issues with hesitation and slipping when shifting from a stop. After consulting with the dealer, we were quoted a price of $1200.00 to install a new clutch, which unfortunately falls 500 miles outside of our warranty. We are disappointed with this situation. During our test drive, the Ford salesman assured us that all Ford Focus vehicles shift in this manner, which we now know to be untrue. We are confident that a resolution can be reached and look forward to resolving this matter in a satisfactory manner.

The transmission of this car has been problematic. Despite having undergone two replacements, one with the previous owner at 9000km and another at 44,500km, just three months after my purchase in October 2019, it is currently slipping again at 46,000km. It is advisable to avoid this car.

Okay! When we bought the Focus, it was amazing! It had beautiful leather seats, great technology, cargo space, and quality. Mine is an automatic and it never got 30 miles to the gallon, more like 27 on the highway. I also loved the beautiful French blue metallic color. As someone else said, it's like a mini-minivan. I do think the tires wear out fast, and I had numerous problems with the alternator. Mainly because people were putting in the wrong alternator, I think, for the SE version, not the ZTW version. Remember, only get your alternator done at Ford, never go to Firestone for anything! I have 134k on it, and lots of things are starting to break. Unfortunately, I can't find genuine replacement parts through Ford for quite a few things.
