1995 Honda Passport problems

honda logo

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.

The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.

In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common 1995 Honda Passport problems

The 1995 Honda Passport, while known for its dependability and comfortable ride, has had its fair share of issues reported by owners over the years. Here are some of the most common problems:

  • Automatic Transmission Failure: At around 100,000 miles, the automatic transmission in the 1995 Honda Passport may start acting up, struggling to go into the right gears and eventually failing to transfer power to the wheels. This issue may require a transmission rebuild or replacement.
  • No-Start Issues: The 3.2L V6 engine in the 1995 Honda Passport can suffer from no-start issues at any time, where the engine won't turn over but the accessories will still work. This issue may be resolved by replacing the battery and starter, but it's not a guaranteed fix.
  • Oil Leaks and Coolant Leaks: Oil leaks, transmission leaks, and coolant leaks are common in the 1995 Honda Passport, especially in the second generation models. These leaks can lead to more serious engine problems if left unaddressed.
  • Poor Handling: The rear-wheel drive models of the 1995 Honda Passport are known for having poor handling, which can make driving in certain conditions more difficult and less safe.
  • Frame Rusting: The 1995 Honda Passport is prone to frame rusting, which can lead to weakened frame structures and potential safety hazards. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 1998-2002 models, but can also be found in earlier models like the 1995 Passport.
  • ABS Sensor Problems: Some owners of the 1995 Honda Passport have reported issues with the ABS sensor, which can cause problems with the braking system and potentially lead to safety hazards.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common issue in the 1995 Honda Passport, and can be a costly repair.
  • 4X4 Axle Boots: The 4X4 axle boots in the 1995 Honda Passport can wear out and require replacement, which can be costly and may not be covered under warranty.
  • Lifter Failure: Lifter failure is another common issue in the 1995 Honda Passport, and can lead to transmission failure and other serious engine problems if left unaddressed.

When considering purchasing a 1995 Honda Passport, it's important to have the vehicle inspected thoroughly by a qualified mechanic before making a decision. This can help identify any potential issues and give you a better idea of the overall condition of the vehicle.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-01
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED FOR BLUE BOOK VALUE FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THE ONLY PROBLEMS WERE THE BLOWER MOTOR AND REAR DOORS WERE STUCK CLOSED. I FIXED THOSE PROBLEMS EASILY AND BEGAN DRIVING IT TO WORK AND BACK EVERY DAY. AFTER PUTTING ABOUT 350 MILES ON IT, I HEARD SOMETHING SMACK THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND IN MY REARVIEW I SAW A CHUNK OF RUST ON THE ROAD. WHEN I GOT HOME I LOOKED UNDERNEATH AND DISCOVERED THAT MY ENTIRE FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED WITH HOLES THE SIZE OF MY FIST IN ABOUT 10 DIFFERENT AREAS, SOME OF WHICH ARE KEY STRUCTURAL AREAS. AT WORK, I RAISED IT UP ON A LIFT AND HAD A WELDER TAKE A LOOK. HIS FACE TURNED WHITE AND SAID IT WAS WAY BEYOND A SIMPLE PATCH JOB HERE AND THERE. UPON RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THAT ALL THESE MODELS HAVE SIMILAR ISSUES. I AM STILL DRIVING THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT IS MY ONLY ONE AND I CANT AFFORD TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW. THE ESTIMATED COST JUST TO PATCH A FEW PLACES TO LIMP IT ALONG FOR ANOTHER YEAR WAS ALMOST WHAT I PAID FOR THE TRUCK. THE WHOLE REASON I BOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE I NEED A RELIABLE VEHICLE TO DRIVE IN WISCONSIN WINTERS AND ITS A HONDA. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS A GREAT RUNNING VEHICLE WITH NO OTHER MAJOR ISSUES, BUT THE FRAME RUST IS ENOUGH TO RENDER IT UNUSABLE. I DRIVE 80 MILES A DAY ON AN INTERSTATE AT 65-70 MPH AND AM VERY CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS. I REALIZE ITS A VEHICLE UP NORTH WHERE THEY USE SALT BUT I HAVE HAD WAY OLDER CARS WITH NOT HALF AS MUCH DAMAGE FROM RUST. I AM CONVINCED THAT THIS IS AN ISUZU FAULTY PRODUCT ISSUE AND NOT NORMAL FOR THE AGE OF THE TRUCK. *TR

WHILE UNDER THE VEHICLE MY MECHANIC NOTICED HOW CORRODED THE FRAME WAS AND THAT IT WAS RUSTING THROUGH. HE CALLED ME OUT OF CONCERN AND HAD ME COME DOWN TO LOOK AT IT. HE SAID IT WAS BAD BEHIND THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR WHEEL AND EVEN WORSE BEHIND THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL. IT APPEARS THAT THE FRAME IS ALMOST COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-08
  • VIN: 4S6CM58V0S4
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: MY 1995 1/2-1996 HONDA PASSPORT HAS BEEN DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR AND CLASSIFIED AS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. LAST WEEK WHILE TURNING THE VEHICLE FROM A COMPLETE STOP OFF AN EXIT, OBVIOUSLY AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED, IT SLID ON SOME ICE HAVING THE FRONT DRIVER'S WHEEL HITTING A LOW CURB. THINKING THE ALIGNMENT WAS KNOCKED OUT, I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED WHEN THE REPAIR SHOP TOLD ME THAT THE FRAME HAD CRACKED ALONG WITH DAMAGE TO THE STEERING BOX. THE VEHICLE WAS SENT TO A WELDING SHOP FOR THE REPAIR UNTIL I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THIS WAS NOT THE ONLY SPOT WITH PROBLEMS. APPARENTLY THE WHOLE FRAME HAS NUMEROUS SPOTS THAT ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. IN MY RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THE HONDA PASSPORT WAS PART OF AN AGREEMENT WITH ISUZU MANUFACTURING OF AMERICA IN LAFAYETTE, INDIANA TO BE MANUFACTURED. I HAVE ALSO FOUND THAT ISUZU HAD A RECALL INVOLVING THEIR VEHICLES MADE BETWEEN 1993-1996 FOR WELD PROBLEMS ON THE FRAMES. IT INVOLVED THE RODEO, TROOPER, PICKUP, AMIGO AND THE ACURA SLX. AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR COMPANY NEVER, FROM WHAT I CAN SEE, RECALLED OR NOTIFIED ANYONE OF THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THEIR VEHICLES. THE INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED, LUCKILY DID NOT INVOLVE ANY FATALITIES OR INJURIES BUT CLEARLY HONDA SHOULD BE DISCUSSING A BUY BACK OPTION FOR THIS INFERIOR VEHICLE. I HAVE AND STILL OWN HONDA VEHICLES THAT NEVER HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. I PURCHASE HONDAS FOR THEIR RELIABILITY, STRUCTURE AND SAFETY. WHEN THIS TYPE OF SERIOUS PROBLEM OCCURS WITH VEHICLES MANUFACTURED AT THE SAME PLANT AND ONLY ONE COMPANY NOTIFIES CONSUMERS, THE OTHER SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, EVEN IF AFTER THE FACT. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE WITH A SOLUTION. I AM NOW WITHOUT A CAR AND AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, IT CAUSES PROBLEMS. THANK YOU. *TR
