The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.

Naming

The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.

First generation (C170; 1998)

Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.

Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.

In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.

For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

THE READYMOUNT ASSEMBLIES WERE SOLD AS AFTERMARKET SERVICE EQUIPMENT FOR USE ON CERTAIN 2000 THROUGH 2005 FORD FOCUS VEHICLES. THESE ASSEMBLIES WERE ASSEMBLED WITH A NUT WITHOUT THE NECESSARY WASHER. THE ABSENCE OF THE WASHER CAN ALLOW THE READYMOUNT ASSEMBLY TO PULL APART THE TOP MOUNT.
  • Consequence: IF THE ASSEMBLY SEPARATES DURING INSTALLATION, IT COULD RESULT IN INJURY TO THE INSTALLER. IF THE ASSEMBLY SEPARATES WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, IT COULD RESULT IN SECONDARY DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND POSSIBLY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

    Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. It's the basic S model with air and 5-speed, and I bought it as a daily commuter since I drive 120 miles a day for work. Overall, it runs well, but I have had some issues with the transmission. Unfortunately, the shifter cable keeps falling off at the transmission, and it's happened three times now. The dealer has been trying to fix it by adjusting the cables, but I believe there is a design flaw with the plastic connector. Additionally, the driver's seat frame broke, which required a new seat back to be installed. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my car and find it to be a reliable mode of transportation.

    I had a really bad experience with my Ford car. Unfortunately, within a year of buying it, I had to get the transmission, clutch, clutch cylinder, and front axle fixed. Even though I never drove it roughly or got into an accident, it was in the shop for two months. After getting it back, the clutch transmission broke again after just two weeks. I eventually got tired of waiting for repairs and decided to buy a four-door 07 Focus, but unfortunately, it also had some issues like a broken door handle and a malfunctioning trunk key. It's been frustrating dealing with these problems, especially since both cars were brand new. I hope Ford can improve their quality in the future, but for now, I don't think I'll be buying from them again.

    I bought this car used. Although I have had some issues with the transaxle and CV joint, the brakes and engine run well and it's very zippy on the road. I get great gas mileage on the highway, around 30+, but it's around 19 on the streets. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the engine mount bolts breaking or falling out, which I've been told is a common issue with the Focus. Additionally, the front end requires alignment more often than Ford recommends. The biggest challenge I've faced with this car is replacing the headlight bulbs, which are squeezed in between a brace and the headlight assemblies. It's a very poorly designed feature. Overall, I've had some issues with this car, but it's still a fun ride.

It was such a fun and sporty car to drive, not to mention the excellent fuel economy. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of selling it to CarMax in 2007 when I bought another car. Looking back, it was definitely one of the worst decisions I've made in my life. I regret selling it so much!

I actually bought it while I was in the service in Guam back in 2005, but I didn't get to drive it much until I came back to the states. Now that I'm here, I'm really getting to see how well it handles. I did have to replace the original dealership tires at 16,000 miles, but other than that, it runs like a dream. Last week, I drove it all the way from Houston to Dallas and still had a quarter tank of gas left when I got there. Can you believe it? And that's with the AC on!     We had a 2003 Focus and traded it for the 2005 model. We've put 3500 miles on it so far and it's been a fun ride. However, I've noticed that I have to readjust the wheel for each bump I hit, which might be due to the low-profile tires. The gas mileage is a bit disappointing at only 21-22 mpg in the city for a 4 cylinder. The dealer reflashed the PCM to see if that would help. One thing to note is that the interior materials are of cheaper quality and the door and quarter panels aren't flush, which is a build quality issue. We did have to take the Focus to the dealer for a minor issue of rough morning idle. Despite these negatives, I still prefer driving the Focus over the 2004 Cavalier.

    I recently bought a used Focus ST with 168k miles and traded it in at 268k miles. The only issue I encountered was a wheel bearing, but everything else was just routine wear and tear maintenance. Although some surface rust started to show on the rockers, it was nowhere near as much as a typical car in 12 years in the rust belt. Despite all the wear and tear, I still managed to get 27 mpg on the highway. The car's get up and go was not bad for a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder, and the 5-speed transmission shifted smoothly while the clutch was progressive and quick. The steering was always dead on and tight, and the car was comfortable for my 6'2
