Ford Focus 2003 problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus 2003 problems
The Ford Focus 2003 is known for several common problems, which have been reported by owners and experts in the automotive industry. This article will discuss these issues in detail, providing a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced by 2003 Ford Focus owners.
- Engine Cuts Out: Some 1.6 petrol Ford Focus models built between January 1999 and January 2000, as well as slightly older versions, may experience occasional engine cuts. This issue is due to a software problem in the powertrain control module, which can be resolved by reinstalling the software at a Ford dealer.
- Air-bag Problems: The Focus models built in March 1999 had recurring problems with the restraint system and airbags. The front and side airbags were known to deploy incorrectly, and the seatbelt pre-tensioners were ineffective. This issue was subject to a recall by Ford in 2000, and it should no longer be an issue on this car.
- Brake Hose Problems: The Focus RS, built in December 2002, was known to have issues where the brake hose rubbed against the inside of the rear wheel arch. This was Ford's responsibility to fix, and it was subject to a recall by Ford.
- Oil Filler Cap Problem: A lot of the Focuses built from March 1998 onwards had issues with the oil filler cap, which became loose and caused a leak of oil onto the exhaust heat shield. This issue was subject to a recall by Ford in 2000.
- Door Latch Problem: Some Focus models built between September and November 1998 could have door latch issues due to a small plastic piece being which resulted in the door not closing properly. This issue was subject to a recall by Ford and should already be fixed on your car.
- Alternator Problem: The Focus model built between 1998 and 1999 has been known to suffer from alternator troubles, relating to short circuiting or overheating. This was usually caused by a faulty harness which caused the cable to come loose. This issue was a manufacturer's fault and was then subject to a recall by Ford.
- Key Stuck in Ignition: The key to your Ford Focus is stuck in the ignition and won't come out. This issue is covered in the manufacturer warranty, but it tends to happen later on. It's an issue that's quite common on Focus cars built between 2000 and 2003, and you can tell it's going to happen if you've noticed that the key is getting harder to turn. In most cases, you will need to call out a locksmith, but this will only be a temporary fix.
- Overheating Control Module: The control module is overheating, sometimes to the point where it's too hot to touch. This issue is a cooling fan problem that can be more serious than you think, especially if you're driving on particularly salty roads, as it can cause corrosion and damage to your engine and control module.
These common problems with the 2003 Ford Focus can significantly impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall ownership experience. It is essential for owners to be aware of these issues and consider them when making decisions about maintenance, repairs, and potential vehicle upgrades or replacements.

- Summary: THE BACK DOOR LOCKS ON THIS CAR DO NOT WORK. THEY SAY A LUBRICANT WAS USED TO FIX THE RECALL ISSUE, HOWEVER, IF THAT WAS THE FIX, IT DID NOT WORK AND THE LOCKS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED. THAT FORD WILL NOT ADDRESS THIS IS INSANE TO ME, AS DOOR LOCKS SHOULD NOT JUST GO LIKE THAT. THE "FIX" WAS NOT A FIX AT ALL. ALSO, THE LIGHTS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE HORRIBLE. IT CANNOT BE DRIVEN AT NIGHT IN AN UNLIT AREA. THERE IS NO VISIBILITY. I WAS TOLD ONCE A RECALL WAS PERFORMED IT WAS THEN DONE, HOWEVER, I DO NOT BELIEVE THE LOCK WAS TAKEN CARE OF PROPERLY, THEREFORE, I FEEL FORD SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THIS. I HAVE APPLIED THE LUBRICANT AS THEY INSTRUCTED TO THE DOORS AND THIS DOES NOTHING. NEITHER DOOR WILL STAY CLOSED & OPENS IF DRIVEN.WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME, THERE WAS A CHILD IN THE BACK SEAT. WE WERE VERY LUCKY WE WERE IN A 25 MPH ZONE AND WERE ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER. THE DOORS HAVE TO BE CORDED SHUT UNTIL A LOCK IS INSTALLED. I DO NOT FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TO CARRY THE BURDEN OF THIS REPAIR AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY SAY A LUBRICANT CAN FIX THIS PROBLEM. IT IS MY OPINION THE LOCKS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED DURING THE RECALL, NOT JUST SPRAYED WITH A LUBRICANT. I CANNOT BELIEVE I'M THE ONLY PERSON WITH THIS ISSUE. I FEEL THAT FORD SAYING THIS RECALL WAS COMPLETED IS FAR FROM INCORRECT AND THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THIS RIGHT. AGAIN, I UNDERSTAND ONCE A RECALL IS COMPLETED IT IS CLOSED, HOWEVER, I FEEL YOU SHOULD LOOK INTO FORD HAVING NOT REALLY COMPLETED THIS RECALL, AS THE ISSUE WAS NOT FIXED. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CLOSED. ALL THEY DID WAS PUT A TEMPORARY BAND-AID ON IT AND DID NOT TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY.WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS FORD TOOK THE CHEAPEST WAY OUT AT THE TIME AND DID NOT TRULY FIX THE PROBLEM AND DID NOT TAKE THEIR FULL RESPONSIBILITY. DOORS THAT WERE RECALLED AND ARE NOT WORKING WERE NOT FIXED.I HAVE HAD CONTACT WITH FORD WITH NO SOLUTION

Great styling! Good performance! The ride is unlike any car I've had before - tight and easy to control. There's plenty of room for four people and the dog in the hatch area. It gets looks everywhere!

Hi there! I've been driving my car for 15 months now. When I bought it, it already had 275,900 miles on it! I originally planned to only use it for short trips around town, but I've actually taken it on some longer drives too. I've had to replace the motor mount, put on new front brakes, and get 2 new front tires, but despite all that, she still runs and drives like a champ!

In a word - practical. It's great for carrying everything from kayaks to furniture. I've had only very minor problems with it, such as the air bag sensor, and it is phenomenal on gas. The only downside is that it's a bit on the boring side. I had an Escort ZX2 before this, and that was a lot more fun to drive.

I really like this car! Although it's not my favorite car I've ever had, it recently proved its worth when I was rear-ended in my Focus. The adjuster told me that there's an impact bar behind the bumper that did its job perfectly. When the guy in the Jeep hit me, the bar bent and bounced him back, completely destroying his front end. Meanwhile, my car only looked like it got tapped a little bit. I won't lie, it was painful, but if I had been in a different vehicle, the outcome could have been much worse. The damage came out to about $2300, but thankfully it's not totaled. Considering the price, I really can't complain. Sure, it has its issues, but what Ford doesn't?

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! Despite your initial reservations about the inline 4, it seems to have plenty of power. The interior has held up very well, and I'm happy to hear that there are just enough cup holders and compartments for your needs. It's also great that you can put down the back seats to haul bigger loads, making it a versatile option for transporting people, pets, groceries, TVs, or even bicycles. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

The Ford Focus (ZTS) initially seems like a great buy, but it's important to be cautious. While the interior is comfortable and well-designed, the build quality can be unreliable. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with my car, including a malfunctioning seat that caused a recent accident. These problems are not unique and many other customers have reported similar issues. Before making a purchase, I recommend checking online customer chats for more information. It's important to be well-informed before making a decision.

I purchased the car in 2011 with 65,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it has not been a reliable vehicle for me. After only 4 months, I had to replace the alternator. In June of 2012, it needed a tune-up during inspection. The ignition also started sticking, which eventually led to a costly repair of $400. Now, the battery is drained and the transmission is sticking. Despite my efforts, the car has been sitting in my driveway for 3 months and I have decided not to invest any more money into it. It's time to say goodbye.

I purchased this car used with 85,000 miles for $5000. Unfortunately, within the first few months, I had to replace the transmission and since then, I have had a few more issues. I have had to replace the alternator, spark plugs, coolant reservoir, vacuum pump, two thermostats, a plastic piece that connects my coolant reservoir to my radiator, and two window pulleys that broke. The cost of all these repairs has been quite expensive and I feel like I could have bought a brand new car by now. Currently, there is a strange rattle noise when idling and the Ford dealership is still trying to figure out what it is. It is quite loud, but I am hopeful that it will be resolved soon. Overall, I would recommend doing some research before purchasing this car.

The car has had some issues since I bought it. Although SVT improved a few things, they also introduced some new problems that made the already poor Focus even worse. It might be best to consider this car as a hobby car rather than a daily driver due to its reliability issues, poor design, and engineering. You could spend three weekends tinkering with it and then drive it on the fourth. It can be a fun car, but the flaws, poor design, and engineering blunders can make it a costly and frustrating experience.

My 2003 Ford Focus has had its fair share of problems, including the alternator, thermostat housing, AA solenoid, fuel pump, water pump, drive belt, timing belt, and engine mounts. Despite these issues, I still love the compact design. However, repairs can be quite expensive or difficult to do yourself. For instance, changing the headlight bulbs requires going under the car. Overall, I enjoy my Focus, but I do wish that Ford had put more thought into the quality of certain parts, such as the plastic thermostat housing that is prone to failure. If yours hasn't failed yet, it likely will soon. Additionally, better engine mounts would be a great improvement. Despite these issues, owning a Focus can help you become a great mechanic.
