Ford Focus 2017 problems

ford logo

The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.

Naming

The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.

First generation (C170; 1998)

Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.

Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.

In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.

For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus 2017 problems

The 2017 Ford Focus has been reported to have several common problems, including transmission issues, premature clutch failure, and engine stalling while accelerating. These problems are more severe than in other compact cars, leading to high repair bills.

Transmission shuddering while changing gears is a common complaint from 2017 Ford Focus owners, especially around 30,000 miles. Damage to the gears inside the transmission is very common, with owners having to rebuild the transmission for around $900 or replace the entire assembly for around $3,000.

Premature clutch failure on manual transmission models has also been reported by owners at around 19,000 miles. The original clutch plates are weaker than many other cars on the market, with many owners choosing to put in an aftermarket clutch which lasts longer, for around $1,600, while the original one is about $1,300.

The engine stalling while accelerating also shows up on some 2017 Ford Focus models in the first 35,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a stuck canister purge valve, which will make the engine stall. There is a recall which covers the purge valve, so Ford will replace it for free if it is causing your engine to stall.

There are 5 recalls on the 2017 Ford Focus, which is more than many other compact cars. The most serious recalls cover the canister purge valve as well as a transmission fluid leak. Ford will repair and replace parts on affected models for free. Other recalls cover seat welds, which are only found on about 698 models.

A well-maintained 2017 Ford Focus may last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as the top-rated Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than other small cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $553 per year. As a 2017 Ford Focus reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the exhaust manifold for $850, transmission oil cooler lines for $200, as well as the fuel sending unit, which costs $950.

The 2017 Ford Focus has been reported to have problems with the transmission, including shuttering while shifting, resistance when shifting, and grinding/synchros. There have also been reports of clutch failures and stalling issues, which were the subject of a recall from Ford. However, these problems may not be as common as some sources suggest, and many owners have reported having no problems with their 2017 Ford Focus.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30
  • VIN: 1FADP3E28HL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle brand new, and shortly after purchase it started to shutter when I accelerated. I had the clutch replaced three times while under warranty. The vehicle is no longer under warranty and recently, it has been having trouble starting and it's been having shifting issues. It's revving and taking longer than it should to shift gears, shifting hard when it does shift, and doesn't act like its going to shift at all. I was on a busy roadway turning right. I made the turn and accelerated to the flow of traffic and the vehicle revved loudly and wouldn't move. I turned on my hazard lights and made my way to the center turning lane. I came to a full stop, put it in park, then back in drive, and proceeded to get back into the driving lane. It delayed shifting and shifted hard the rest of the way, but thankfully I made it home safely. It is at the mechanic shop right now and I'm being told it needs a new transmission. The mechanic also told me that he cannot find a transmission for this vehicle because as soon as they come in, they are bought up due to this reoccurring issue. I have to get this vehicle back to my house to just sit in the driveway until I can figure something out. This vehicle is only 7 years old with 120K miles on it. I just paid this vehicle off last year, and now I have to find a new vehicle. Ford really needs to recall these transmissions!

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

Negative Ford Focus 2017 car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned some trouble with your car's transmission. That can be really frustrating, especially when you've already had it serviced a few times. Have you considered reaching out to Ford to see if they can offer any assistance? I understand that it can be tough to deal with unexpected expenses, especially when you still owe money on the car. If you need any suggestions or just want to chat about it, feel free to let me know!

Proper research before purchasing a car is crucial. Despite being good on gas, my Ford has had several issues in the last 6-8 months, which is disappointing considering I have only owned it for 2 years.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Ford Focus SEL. Unfortunately, I had some issues with the battery and transmission, but I wanted to let you know about my experience. After 3 months and 10 days, my battery died and I had to pay for a new one out-of-pocket. The transmission began to slip after 4 years and at 95,300 miles it completely failed. Despite these issues, I enjoyed driving the car and it served me well for 4 years. However, I am disappointed that the transmission failed and the car is now inoperable. Overall, I had a mixed experience with my Ford Focus SEL. Thank you for listening!

I have experienced issues with the transmission of my car, which is a common problem among many other car owners. Despite having the clutch replaced at 47,000 miles, the issue has resurfaced within a year and 13,000 miles. Unfortunately, the warranty has expired, and my local dealer has not been helpful. However, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another Ford vehicle in the future, based on my experience with this car and the company's customer service. I strongly advise against buying this car to save yourself time and money.

At 40,000 miles, the 2017 Ford Focus automatic experiences severe transmission shutter and delay in acceleration/shifting 1-3rd gears. Despite Ford's service department charging $200 to claim the shutter is normal, it is not. This is a serious safety issue that Ford must address.

Positive Ford Focus 2017 car reviews

This car has several recalls, and I have experienced wiring problems with the ignition switch. Despite being under warranty, Ford has refused to fix it.

Great electric car, you will never buy gas again!

Looking for a reliable and economical daily driver that's also fun to drive? I was in the same boat when I needed to replace my old sedan without breaking the bank. After a bit of searching, I found an anomaly on the dealer lot - a manual transmission! It took a little effort and some Google searching, but I found what I was looking for. While the 3cyl turbo can be a bit weak at low RPM's, it really comes alive from 3000-6500 and can be quite fun. The pedal placement isn't great for heal-toe shifting, but the after-market has a fix to realign the throttle pedal. Overall, the engine is raspy and fun at high rev's while still being economical at normal speeds. And for all you EcoBoost folks out there, remember: you get Eco OR Boost... so pick with your right foot! Despite the occasional floggings, this engine hasn't even been broken in yet and has achieved amazing combined fuel mileage.

    Your car is a gem!

  5. Lance Ritchie 2024-03-02

We need a small car because we often attend sporting events on a Major University Campus, and all the on-campus parking spots are small. This car is perfect for that! It's nicely equipped with the Titanium package - including Ford's Sync3. It has a sporty look and feel, and plenty of zip - especially considering it gets around 36 mpg.
