2014 Ford Focus problems

ford logo

The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.

Naming

The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.

First generation (C170; 1998)

Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.

Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.

In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.

For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-18
  • VIN: 1FADP3K2XEL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2014 Ford Focus due to recurring error codes P0456 (Very Small Leak Detected), P1450 (Unable to Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum), and P2190 (System Too Rich at Idle). These issues relate to the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) and fuel tank system, which have caused symptoms such as intermittent Check Engine Light warnings, fuel odor, and difficulty refueling. These problems were confirmed by an independent service center during diagnostic testing, but the dealership refused to perform a goodwill fix, citing that my vehicle is not currently included in related recalls. This is particularly concerning because a large number of 2014 Ford Focus vehicles—approximately 1.5 million—have been recalled for similar issues with the EVAP and fuel systems, which pose risks such as fuel vapor leaks and stalling due to fuel system pressure irregularities. Although my VIN is not listed under the recall, the identical symptoms strongly suggest my vehicle should be included. I have not had the vehicle inspected by Ford or other representatives, but I urge NHTSA to investigate further as this is a significant safety concern that endangers me and others on the road.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
  • VIN: 1FADP3K24EL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I am the owner of a 2014 Ford Focus VIN [XXX] . I have had the car into an Authorized Ford Dealership numerous times. On the 2nd to last visit the Transmission Control Module was replaced at no cost to me. However, since then the transmission has malfunctioned again. It lurches, loses power and stalls. I took it back to the Ford Dealer and was told I needed a new transmission. I blame this on the extended length of time it took the Ford Motor Company to get the TCM and schedule the replacement. Am I entitled to any compensation or a buyback from Ford? What other steps can be taken to resolve my issue? Thank you for your time. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1FADP3K27EL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The warranty was extended on the transmission control module (TCM) instead of a recall. Symptoms of the TCM include “intermittent loss of transmission engagement while driving, no start, or lack of power”. All potentially very dangerous in my opinion. It is also my opinion (and others) that a failing TCM can harm the clutch. My TCM was reprogrammed in 2019 and the clutch (under warranty at the time) was replaced. Last week the TCM was replaced at no charge and the clutch was replaced again but at a cost of $3,571.77 this time. I was driving on an interstate highway when a warning light came on and minutes later the car went into neutral. Fortunately for me I was able to get off an exit and pull over on the exit ramp shoulder. I see online that many others are having similar problems. Some might not be as lucky as I was.

2014 Ford Focus recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2014 Ford Focus.

2020-06-08
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
  • Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.
  • Consequence: The excessive vacuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.

Negative 2014 Ford Focus car reviews

  1. Douglas Hills 2025-03-26

Our automatic transmission is experiencing issues with hesitation and slipping when shifting from a stop. After consulting with the dealer, we were quoted a price of $1200.00 to install a new clutch, which unfortunately falls 500 miles outside of our warranty. We are disappointed with this situation. During our test drive, the Ford salesman assured us that all Ford Focus vehicles shift in this manner, which we now know to be untrue. We are confident that a resolution can be reached and look forward to resolving this matter in a satisfactory manner.

This is my second time purchasing a new Ford Focus. I absolutely loved my first one, a 2011 model, which had great mileage, handled well, and was reasonably priced. I decided to trade it in for a 2014 model, which I initially thought was another reliable mid-size sedan that handled well, had great mileage, was comfortable, roomy, and looked classy. However, after driving it for about 17,000 miles, I started experiencing acceleration issues. The car would jerk and was slow to get up to speed when accelerating, which was quite scary. I even had a scary situation when I was going up a ramp in a parking garage and it felt like the car was going to lose power and roll backwards. The sputtering and jerking usually starts after driving the car for a while. I had the car inspected by a Ford Dealer and was told that I needed the clutch assembly replaced. Unfortunately, it has been over a month since then and I was informed that the clutch assembly parts have been ordered for many customers but none of the parts have been delivered by Ford. I am disappointed with the customer service and outreach as I was never contacted by Ford or received any notification regarding the transmission issues. It was only after I heard about a report on my local news and I started doing some investigation on my own. Despite all these issues, I still have no choice but to drive my car every day. However, I have to say that the complaints I've read make me very leery. I hope that Ford can address these issues soon and regain my trust as a loyal customer.

I would not recommend purchasing this car due to issues with the dual clutch transmission. Ford has been experiencing problems with this transmission for the past 5 years, yet they continue to produce it. The transmission can have difficulty shifting in and out of 1st gear, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the 2.0L engine's performance is difficult to assess due to the transmission's hesitation and clutch slipping. After driving the car for 2 years, I decided to trade it in for a Prius. Unfortunately, I only received half of what I paid for it, but I am grateful to have gotten that much. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing a Ford again.

This is about the transmission shuddering issue. Despite the interior not having a lot of storage space, I absolutely love my car. I purchased it last May and have not even reached 10k miles. After a few months, I noticed a noise the car was making - clunking/clicking when driving/accelerating. I immediately brought it to the dealer I purchased it from and had to wait three days for them to test drive and verify my claims. Although it took a few days to fix, everything seemed well until this morning when I thought I heard the noise start up again. Not bad, but enough to make me worry. However, I am confident that the issue will be resolved during my upcoming 10k service. It is worth noting that some websites and sources have reported transmission issues with these cars. I will update this post if anything changes. If you are experiencing the same problem, do not hesitate to bring it in for repair. Rest assured that the dealership will take care of it.

When I first saw and drove the car, I instantly fell in love with it. It was cool, fun, sporty, smooth, and solid. I bought it (used) right away, thinking I just got a great deal on a great car. However, I soon noticed that the car had a really strange transmission feel. When I was test driving it, the transmission felt like a manual. I just assumed it revved high because it was a sports car. It felt sporty. But later on, after I bought the car, I started to notice some jerking when starting from a stop. With all this going on, I decided to do some research on the car and its transmission. I didn't realize it was a dual-clutch transmission (automated manual) when I bought the car. This explained the manual feel of it. After that, I went on a drive to test the transmission, and it was terrible - rough starts, jerking uphill, weird revving. I read reviews on here, and everyone says the same thing - lemon transmission. Dual clutches tend to be not as smooth as traditional manuals, but this one is just awful. I can't believe Ford would put such a terrible transmission in a car in this day and age. My advice to you is to spend the extra money and get a Mazda 3 or Corolla. Luckily, my dealer offers a 3-day return policy, so I will be sadly returning this car at once.

Positive 2014 Ford Focus car reviews

  1. Deshaun Crist 2024-01-26

The repeated issues with my transmission have been a major inconvenience since the beginning. Despite having a new clutch put in three times, the problem persists. It is concerning that the dealership has not been able to provide a satisfactory solution. I urge Ford to take notice of these reviews and address the transmission issues in this car. It is unacceptable for a car to roll backwards at a stop sign. As a customer, I expect a reliable and safe vehicle.
