Ford Focus 2015 problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
- VIN: 1FADP3N2XFL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving down the highway the vehicle all of a sudden made a long depleted noise and then the vehicle shifted into 1st gear and wouldn't come go faster then 5 or 10mph. Check engine light came on and had to immediately put hazard lights on and get onto feeder to then drive the vehicle home at a very slow pace. Vehicle no longer shifts into higher gears. Got home and had family member test drive vehicle and vehicle would only go into 1st but with issues. Then tried reverse and the vehicle wouldn't shift into reverse, sounded like it was in neutral, would rev but not shift into Reverse gear. Managed to turn around and parked it back in driveway. Found in glove compartment the last inspection performed on the vehicle on September 24, 2023 which was done by the dealership I bought the car from. On the back of the inspection report it lists 2 recalls for power train issues on clutch shudder and clutch control module. However, both say something about warranty, and when I took the paper to the ford dealership I was told that's not a recall it's an extended warranty and it expired in 2022 for the clutch shudder issue but the module one they would replace for free. I would like to understand about the first one regarding clutch shudder and the warranty part. The ford dealer service tech was very unconcerned about this and pretty much says it's only a 7 year warranty on that issue so it would have needed to happen or be brought in 2022. Basically saying I'm out of luck with my problem. This seems like a very dangerous problem with this car and I would think was an actual recall item not just an extended dealer warranty item. I also had a auto mechanic test drive and look at the vehicle and they also confirmed this was a clutch issue. Can someone explain and verify this information?

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 1FADP3F29FL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I'm writing to seek assistance with transmission problems in our 2012-2016 Ford Focus. Despite visiting a repair shop, we've encountered a roadblock with Ford's expired Manufacturer Customer Satisfaction Programs. Background: The repair shop diagnosed an issue with the Power Shift transmission, a known problem affecting all 2012-2016 Ford Focus models. Ford had two Manufacturer Customer Satisfaction Programs in place (Transmission Control Module and Transmission Clutch Shudder) until 2020. Unfortunately, we purchased the vehicle in 2023, and the previous owners didn't participate in these programs. Current Situation: Ford is refusing to address the issues due to the expired programs, despite the vehicle remaining dangerous to operate. We've contacted Ford headquarters, and they suggested reaching out to the NHTSA for potential assistance in extending the warranty or instructing Ford to fix our vehicle. Request: We kindly request your help in exploring options to resolve this matter. We believe it's essential to ensure the vehicle's safety, even if the Manufacturer Customer Satisfaction Programs have expired. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your response.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
- VIN: 1FADP3F24FL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The transmission system, specifically the clutch assembly, failed or malfunctioned. The Ford dealership conducted a diagnostic test and determined that the clutch assembly needed repair. To manage costs, I had the repair performed at AAMCO. Despite this repair, the issue was not resolved, and AAMCO later found metal shavings in the transmission fluid, suggesting internal transmission damage. Yes, the vehicle and its transmission system are available for inspection upon request. The malfunctioning clutch and potential transmission damage pose significant safety risks. A failing clutch can lead to the inability to change gears properly, which can cause the vehicle to stall or lose power unexpectedly while driving. This could result in a loss of control, increasing the risk of an accident, especially in high-traffic situations or on highways. Furthermore, the presence of metal in the transmission fluid suggests that there might be further internal damage that could lead to sudden transmission failure, further endangering the driver, passengers, and other road users. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by two different service centers. Initially, the Ford dealership diagnosed the issue as a stuck clutch and replaced the clutch assembly, but this did not fix the problem. Subsequently, AAMCO inspected the vehicle and identified metal in the transmission fluid, indicating a more severe transmission issue. Both these findings confirm that there is a persistent problem with the vehicle’s transmission system. Yes, the vehicle was inspected by a Ford dealership (the manufacturer’s representative), who diagnosed the clutch issue and performed the initial repair. Additionally, the vehicle was inspected by an independent service center (AAMCO), which identified metal in the transmission fluid, indicating internal transmission damage. There has been no inspection by the police or insurance representatives at this time.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
- VIN: 1FADP3K23FL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Parts replaced, according to 2019 R/O from Ford Dealer: clutch assembly Parts needed for replacement, according to R/O from Ford Dealer: clutch, clutch forks x2, clutch bearing, clutch hardware, 1 qt of transmission oil Available for inspection, however it is getting diagnosed with possible proceeding of replacement at an independent service provider. I experienced gear slippage, resulting in high rpms and no gaining of speed while driving on an on ramp onto a 65 mph limit freeway, which my vehicle then maxed out at 50 mph. Following this, the transmission did not engage into reverse when shifted from within the car. Yes, I had the work done in 2019 for the 14m02, TCM recall, and the dealer saw that the "clutch assembly" was worn and not performing within the necessary standards. This was covered by my general warranty, not the 14m02 extended warranty. I currently don't have the repair order from the 2019 fix as it's in my car at the independent mechanic, but can be provided. The vehicle will be inspected by an independent service center this week/today. This model has had a known problem of "shuddering" in earlier years, which my personal vehicle does experience from time to time, specifically when stopping and going or going uphill. My engine light did eventually turn on, but with no direct messages, once the vehicle became fully undriveable (not shifting from 1st to 2nd without major kickback and no reverse). Using my personal code reader I received the following DTC codes: P07A5 - Transmission Friction Element "B" Stuck On P287A - Clutch 'B' Stuck Engaged
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
- VIN: 1FADP3J2XFL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I bought a brand new Ford Fusion in 2015 at Planet Ford Dallas. Since then, I have had my car maintained regularly at this dealership. However, my car has recently showed symptoms of intermittent loss of transmission. Then, I made an appointment on Aug. 19, 2024 and showed the recall letter to the dealership to request an inspection, but the rep refused to take a look at it, saying there were 20 people ahead of me and said the wait time for fixing TCM (the transmission control module) problem was at least three or four months. On Aug. 20, 2024, I called Ford Customer Relationship Center but could not fix this issue. I am very angry and frustrated because I trust Ford and its dealership will take good care of my car whenever I have my car maintained there. I believe fixing recalls is mandatory, so Planet Ford Dallas should fix it for me voluntarily. Why did they not notify me about this TCM problem and fixed it for me in the first place whenever they serviced my car in the past 9 years? If they had found this problem, I would not have to worry about the possibility of my car breaking down in the middle of the road anytime, not to mention the possibility of a car accident. Ford company should monitor its dealerships whether they fix Ford Recalls and if Ford customers still experience some problems because this is an issue of passenger's safety. Also, Ford company should notify Planet Ford Dallas about its poor performance and poor customer's satisfaction. If all dealerships work like this one, no customer will want to buy any Ford cars any more just like me.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: 1FADP3K22FL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The car will not accelerate out of nowhere. When pulling out into traffic it will do a RPM spike but will not gain speed. Has started giving a transmission overheated error. Sometimes the check engine light will come on but not everytime. Have to take side roads and takes longer to get anywhere as I never know if it will accelerate correctly. Waiting to hear from dealer what it is.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
- VIN: 1FADP3F24FL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: It was mainly the clutch, apparently, but the work order includes a lot more. Yes, it is available for inspection. The car was difficult to control. It was slipping and was having trouble getting into gear. I was driving on a winding mountainess road, parts of it are along a cliff with a reservoir/lake below. Just my usual drive to work here in the Sierras. It go's without saying that others were put at risk since the car was difficult to handle. Yes, the car needs a new clutch and other stuff to the tune of $5,000 up. The car has less than 80,000 miles on it and has had two transmission replacements and a prior clutch replaced a little over a year and a half ago. I was unaware of these prior problems as the car was purchased by me one year and a month ago. The Ford Corporation was part of a class action suit and it was settled a few years ago, unfortunately, I did not own this 2015 Ford Focus at the time. No, the car has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative. But, yes, by a Ford Dealership mechanic here in Sonora, California. The extended warranty for the clutch has expired on this car not that long ago. The extended warranty for the transmission has not expired. I wonder if the problem is the transmission since the transmission light came on but then I would'nt have to pay them anything. The independant garages around here won't work on this car. The first time the car engine light came on the car died. I went to the nearest repair shop and they put in a new battery but that was not the problem. So, the next day I'm driving to work on the winding mountainous road and a light came on, it said transmission overheating.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-20
- VIN: 1FADP3N27FL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission clutch failed. The parts were taken by CrossRoads Ford of Henderson, NC. I did not make a claim on my insurance, I was told initially that this was a recalled part. I did not make a police report and I don't know if the manufacturer was alerted to this problem from my car. After the repair was done, I had to pay for the repair since the person at the dealer said that the codes it was recording were not for the parts that were under warranty for the transmission. My safety and that of my children were at risk, as the transmission was not permitting the forward gears to engage out of low, and we were driving in city traffic. I was almost rear-ended several times and had to try to find places to pull off the street so that I didn't get hit by the car behind me. The reverse gear was also not working at all. I did not have any warning lights come on to warn me of this problem.

- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
- Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.
- Consequence: The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Also included are four 2017 Ford Focus vehicles that had clutch replacements with potentially affected parts. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.
- Consequence: A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Focus vehicles with software that detects and prevents prolonged clutch slip, and will replace the clutch, as necessary, free of charge. Owners of Fusion vehicles will have their clutch assembly replaced free of charge. The recall began August 3, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."

I've had this car for about a month now and I must say, it's been a pleasure to drive. I don't treat myself to a new car very often, maybe once every ten years, so it's been a real treat. The fuel economy and acceleration are fantastic. As for reliability, it's still too early to tell, but I did have a minor issue with the radio quitting after just two days. I took it to the dealer and they confirmed that it wasn't working, but then it started working again without any repairs being made. I'm a bit concerned that I may have future problems with it, but I'm hopeful that won't be the case. The ride is a bit stiff, but that's probably because the recommended tire pressure is 37 psi. The automatic transmission is built to emulate a manual transmission, so shifting can be noticeable at times and not always at the optimum transition points. Interestingly, the transmission has an L position on the shifter instead of an S, and there's no documentation in the owner's manual about it. However, I contacted Ford Customer Service in Detroit and they were able to give me a good understanding of how it operates. It's a bit surprising that they couldn't provide anything in writing, but at least I have a better understanding of it now. On a positive note, the car comes with a standard rear view camera, which is a really nice touch.

You're getting a great value for your money! If you're looking for a lot of standard features, the Titanium option might be the way to go.

This car is a great option for a single commuter. It can seat up to 5 people, but it may not be the most comfortable for those over 5'5

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my recent experience with my car. Unfortunately, I was in an accident last week where my car was t-boned on the driver's side and it was totaled. Despite the damage, I'm grateful to say that I only left with a slightly sore neck and a small scrape on my knee. My passenger did suffer a broken rib, but we're both on the road to recovery. Thank you for listening!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Focus. I bought it used with a little less than 30,000 miles on it and it's been great so far! The only issue I had was a recall that had already been taken care of - the fuel sensor went bad. Luckily, it was covered under warranty. The car handles really well and gets great gas mileage. The only thing I wish it had was a little more pick up and go. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!

It would be great if the transmission issues with this car could be addressed before it is sold again. I had some trouble with the transmission during the week that I owned it, which made it difficult to drive. Unfortunately, I had to sell it at a loss due to these issues. I hope that future models will be more reliable. Thank you.

I bought my vehicle at the beginning of 2016 with 18k miles on it. Although it has always shifted a bit funny, around 40k miles it started shifting horribly. I took it to the shop and was relieved to find out that the clutch in the transmission was covered by warranty (I didn't even realize my transmission had a clutch as it is an automatic). This caused me to do some research and unfortunately, I found out that this vehicle has received some negative reviews. Not even a month after I got the car back, it started shaking and rattling every time it shifted. Thankfully, another clutch was covered under warranty. However, I have had to take the car to the shop twice because while pulling out onto the highway, the car stopped and acted like it was going to die, almost resulting in me getting T-Boned by a semi with my baby in the vehicle. This has happened twice now. I spoke to the dealership that we have bought 3 vehicles from, and although they didn't have any immediate solutions, they were very friendly and understanding. The inside of the car is nice, and I love my backup camera, which is why I gave it 2 stars. However, I am hesitant to let my teenage daughter drive this vehicle.

Although my car had many issues and something was always wrong, I made the best decision by trading it in.

Going uphill can be a challenge, especially after a few thousand miles. It may shudder and accelerate poorly, even after multiple attempts to fix the issue. Therefore, I would recommend avoiding this purchase.

I have owned this car for almost a year now, and unfortunately, I have not had the best experience with it. Although the car looks nice and has some great features such as heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a back-up camera, and parking sensors, I have found the driving experience to be quite terrible. The car is very hesitant when you need to accelerate, and it shudders when starting off, which can be quite frustrating. Additionally, I have had some issues with the build quality, such as my rear passenger door falling off its hinges and my driver's seat coming loose and moving around while driving. I have also had to replace bulbs multiple times. While I would not recommend this car, there are many other options available that may better suit your needs and budget.
