2010 Ford Focus problems
The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.
Naming
The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.
First generation (C170; 1998)
Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.
Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.
In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.
For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common 2010 Ford Focus problems
The Ford Focus 2010 has been reported to have several common problems, which include leaky manual transmissions, a noise from the front wheels, inoperative remote-control keys, and clogged diesel particulate filters on 1.6-litre TDCi models.
Leaky manual transmissions are a common problem in the Ford Focus 2010, which can lead to a loss of transmission fluid, causing the transmission to slip or fail altogether. The leak can occur from various places, including the input shaft seal, the main shaft seal, or the tail shaft seal. To fix this problem, the transmission may need to be removed and disassembled to replace the faulty seal.
A noise from the front wheels is another common problem reported by Ford Focus 2010 owners. This noise can be caused by a variety of issues, including a damaged CV joint, worn-out wheel bearings, or a faulty brake caliper. To diagnose the problem, the wheels and suspension components need to be inspected, and any damaged parts replaced.
Inoperative remote-control keys can also be a problem for Ford Focus 2010 owners. This issue can be caused by a dead battery in the key fob, a faulty remote control module, or a problem with the key blade. To fix this problem, the battery in the key fob may need to be replaced, or the remote control module may need to be repaired or replaced.
Clogged diesel particulate filters (DPF) are a common problem in the 1.6-litre TDCi models of the Ford Focus 2010. The DPF is designed to capture and burn off soot particles from the exhaust gases, but if it becomes clogged, it can cause a variety of problems, including reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and engine warning lights. To fix this problem, the DPF may need to be cleaned or replaced.
In addition to these common problems, the Ford Focus 2010 has also been subject to several recalls, including issues with the engine cooling fan module, fuel return pipes, vacuum pump non-return valve, and power steering pipes. These recalls have affected thousands of cars, highlighting the need for regular maintenance and inspections to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
In summary, the Ford Focus 2010 has several common problems, including leaky manual transmissions, a noise from the front wheels, inoperative remote-control keys, and clogged diesel particulate filters on 1.6-litre TDCi models. These problems can lead to significant repairs and maintenance costs, highlighting the importance of regular inspections and maintenance to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-01
- VIN: 1FAHP3DNXAW
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Three out of four 215/45/r17 Douglas tires bought at Walmart in Piqua oho ended up with bubbles on the sidewall a week after the year from the day they were bought. one right after the other. When i went to have them replaced at a discounted price, i could not because i had to put a spare tire on (it is considerably smaller) causing the tread on one tire to be slightly uneven from the others. so this voided the warranty. Now tell me how passenger side and driver side front tires both end up with sidewall bubbles and one blows out within a week apart? Nothing changed in my driving routine. Bought two nearly new tires to maintain my ability to get around, and a third tire develops a bubble and had to be replaced. The last tire is slowly leaking!? i drive to work and back. I live less than 2 mins from my place of employment. i do still have my paperwork from buying the tires. btw the warranty was never registered correctly because when i tried to call about it they had no idea where to find it. i had to send all sorts of paperwork to them and still got no results.

I did not own the vehicle when the issue first occurred so I don't know if there were any warning signals prior to the issue appearing.

- Summary: WHEN TRAVELING IN REVERSE AT A VERY SLOW SPEED (BETWEEN 1 & 4 MPH) THE CAR CONTINUES TO TRAVEL FOR ABOUT A SECOND OR TWO WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE. THIS HAS HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY SINCE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM THE DEALER. IT IS MORE LIKELY TO HAPPEN WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING AND/OR WHEN IT IS COLD OUTSIDE, BUT CAN HAPPEN OTHER TIMES. IT IS FAIRLY INFREQUENT. I HAVE HAD A FORD DEALERSHIP CHECK IT, BUT NOTHING WAS EVER FOUND. IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN FROM TIME TO TIME AND HAPPENED RECENTLY. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS USUALLY OCCURS IN A PARKING LOT WHEN BACKING OUT OF A SPACE. IF A PERSON OR CAR COMES BEHIND ME WHILE I AM REVERSING, THE BRAKES MAY NOT IMMEDIATELY WORK WHEN I TRY TO STOP SUDDENLY.

Hi there! Just wanted to share my experience with my car after driving it for 9 months and 26,000 miles. I recently replaced the OE Kumho tires with some Continental Extremecontact DWS, and I must say, it has made a huge difference! The ride is even smoother, it has better grip in the corners, and it's much quieter too. I haven't had any problems with it since I've owned it, and it's really fun to drive. With the A/C off, it has plenty of power, and the transmission is very responsive with well-spaced gears for a 4-speed unit. It has tons of grip and very little body lean in the corners, it just grips and grips! However, with the A/C on and passengers in the car, the little 2.0 engine struggles a bit to get up to speed. But no worries, at WOT, the A/C shuts off anyway. Thanks for reading!

Congratulations on your 2011 Focus SES 2.0L/4A! It sounds like you've been taking great care of it, with almost 8,000 miles driven since August 20th. Your commute is quite long, but it's great to hear that you've been averaging 28mpg overall, especially with all the merging and highway driving. It's impressive that you haven't had to take it back to the dealership once in that time. The car feels solid on the road and the interior is quiet, which is always a plus. Even though there is a little bit of road noise, it's not too bad. The basic stereo with sync is a nice feature, and the stock speakers are pretty good for the class of car. The engine has adequate power and the transmission shifts smoothly without hunting for gears. Overall, it sounds like you're enjoying your car and taking good care of it. Keep up the good work!

I just purchased this car on 6/23 and on my first tank of gas, I got an impressive 27.15 mpg. With my almost 130 mile round trip 2-3 times a week, I am saving a lot of money on gas when compared to my '04 Ranger or my wife's 2002 Accord. The wind and road noise is minimal, especially for a base-model car. The steering is tight and handles curves well. The 5-speed takes a little getting used to, especially when compared to my aforementioned Ranger, but it's not a big issue. This car is very well-equipped for a base model; the stereo can be deafening! The MPG reads higher by about 2 mpg on the computer than calculated at fill-up, but this is not problematic to me as the difference is likely due to the real-time calculation of the on-board computer. Overall, this is a great car!

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car and that it's been a good fit for you after downsizing from an SUV. It sounds like the car has held up well over the years, especially with the oil spray keeping the body in good condition. I appreciate your honest feedback about the car's power and gas tank size, but it's great to hear that the clutch is easy to use and the suspension and rims are beefier with the SES model. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Proven reliability, never a problem. This car is easy to drive and is set up high for a smaller vehicle. It makes for a good road car with minimal road noise. The secret to its good handling is good tires and good struts, which can improve the handling from good to excellent for a smaller than mid-size car. There is plenty of room for four or five people, including youths in the rear seat. The trunk space is also generous. Ford has perfected the body and engine after years of redesigning, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable car.

Despite 11,000 miles and 7 multi-day trips to the dealer, the constant shimmy, shake, and odd vibration at 50 mph and above in my vehicle remains unfixed. As a concerned driver, I believe that my family's safety is at risk. Despite the dealer's focus on the tires, the issue persists. Unfortunately, after the third trip, I did not receive any paperwork, which could have been useful for Lemon Law purposes. As a first-time American car buyer, I am disappointed with the quality of my purchase. I hope that Ford can improve their quality standards in the future.
Lucious Heidenreich 2024-10-12
Although my experience with my Ford Focus has been disappointing, I am confident that Ford is capable of producing high-quality cars. However, my particular vehicle has consistently had issues with gas mileage, acceleration, handling, and technology. Despite my efforts to drive conservatively, I am only getting 20 MPG, which is unacceptable. I believe that a well-made Ford Focus would be a great car, but unfortunately, mine has not lived up to my expectations.

I recently purchased a 2010 Ford Focus SEL sedan and I really like the exterior styling. The interior design is pretty cool, although the cup holder location is a bit impractical. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues when driving the car, as the 'Wrench' light came on and I lost power control to the accelerator. This happened three times and Ford was unable to do anything about it because the 'Engine' light had not come on and there were no DTC codes to read. On one occasion, this happened while I was on vacation, and this time the 'Engine' light did come on. I took the car to the dealer and they informed me that they knew all along it was the Throttle Position Sensor, but they could not do anything until the code was verified. I also found out that the parts have been on back order for several weeks. I am still waiting for Ford to issue a service bulletin. Overall, I am disappointed with the issues I have experienced, but I hope that Ford will be able to resolve them soon.

I needed to downsize from the Trailblazer I had and needed something that was better on gas mileage, so I looked at the Focus. I've had mine for a few months and I really like it. Other than the road noise, which I read may be either the factory (Kumho) tires or rims, and the fact that my ignition coil went out at 40k thousand miles, I love this car and would definitely purchase another one.

I purchased this car brand new in January 2010. Unfortunately, in February 2011, the throttle needed to be replaced, which prevented me from driving over 50 mph until it was fixed. It was a scary experience when it went out on me at night on a freeway while I was driving at high speeds. In August of the same year, the driver's side window stopped working, and I had to wait a week for the replacement part to arrive. I was disappointed and concerned about these occurrences, as I didn't expect to deal with mechanical breakdowns on a car less than two years old. I'm now considering trading it in for a Subaru.
