Ford Focus 2000 problems

ford logo

The Ford Focus is a compact car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1999. It was created under Alexander Trotman's Ford 2000 plan, which aimed to globalize model development and sell one compact vehicle worldwide. The original Focus was primarily designed by Ford of Europe's German and British teams. Production of the fourth generation Focus began in 2018 in Germany and China.

Naming

The decision to name the new car the "Ford Focus" was made in early 1998, as Ford's senior management had been planning to keep the "Escort" nameplate for its new generation of small family cars. A last-minute problem arose in July 1998 when a Cologne court, responding to a case brought by the publisher Burda, ordered Ford to avoid the name "Focus" for the cars in the German market since the name was already taken by one of its magazines (Focus). This eleventh-hour dispute was resolved, however, and the car was launched with the name Focus.

First generation (C170; 1998)

Ford of Europe introduced the Focus in 1998 to the European market as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The Focus Mk 1 was awarded the 1999 European Car of the Year award. The project manager for the Ford Focus at Dunton was Rose Mary Farenden.

Ford of North America began marketing the Focus in September 1999 for the 2000 model year, with some changes from the European version. The car was launched as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door wagon; a five-door hatchback debuted in 2001.

In 2002, Ford launched its highest performance version of the Focus, called the Focus RS. It came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged Duratec RS engine, a Quaife ATB limited-slip differential, an AP Racing clutch, and a revolutionary design front suspension strut system called "Revo-knuckle"- as marketed by Ford, Sachs Racing dampers Brembo brakes, 18” O.Z Racing alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and a host of other performance changes, combined with a much more aggressive appearance, and was available only in Ford's Imperial blue. Tickford Engineering won the engineering contract for the research, development and to oversee production of the Mk 1 Focus RS. Tickford made substantial modifications to the base unit, with up to 70% of the base components either updated, re-engineered or completely redesigned. Despite the development being carried out in the United Kingdom, Ford produced the Focus RS in the Saarlouis plant in Germany between 2002 and 2003 making a limited run of 4501 cars only. This original Focus RS was only available in Europe; just under half (2147) of these were sold in the UK.

For decades, in the U.S., small cars like the Focus were seen as a tool to draw in younger buyers looking for a cheap basic transportation and to increase auto makers' fleet average fuel economies to meet U.S. federal standards. Ford was said not to be concerned about losing money on the Focus so the company could sell gas guzzlers for big profits. However, recent sales of new Focuses have been able to maintain lower or overall discounting incentive rates than many competing vehicles in its class. Many industry insiders view cars like the Focus as 'compliance cars' because of their role in helping to bring up the corporate fleet average fuel economy to meet current fuel-economy standards.

Common Ford Focus 2000 problems

The Ford Focus 2000 has been known to have various issues based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most common problems:

  • Alternator problems: Some models built between June 1998 and March 1999 had alternator problems which resulted in short circuits, overheating, and even fires.
  • Door latch problem: Some cars built between September and November 1998 had problems with their door latches which weren’t built to specification, preventing the doors from closing properly.
  • Loss of engine power: The 1.6 petrol version of the Focus, built between January 1999 and January 2000, may exhibit engine cut outs, which are caused by a malfunction in the engine management software.
  • Oil filler cap problem: Many 1998-2004 models had a oil filler caps which worked loose and allowed oil to drip onto the exhaust heat shield.
  • Automatic gearbox problem: Damage to the crankshaft position sensor often led to engines cutting out; this specifically affected 1.6 petrol Focuses with automatic gearboxes built between August 1999 and February 2000.
  • Wiper motor problem: Some early second-generation cars built between April 2003 and March 2005 had wiper motors which could overheat and fail due to water entering through the wiper arm spindle. This usually happened in winter when the roads had been salted.
  • Engine failure: A serious problem specific to 1.6 TDCi cars built between February and June 2004. Misaligned oil feeds reduced oil flow, causing premature wearing of the camshaft bearings and eventual engine seizure.
  • Brake pedal sticking: Focuses built between November 2005 and December 2006 may exhibit problems with their brake pedals becoming stiff in cold weather, due to a non-return valve in the pump began to stick.
  • Power steering problems: Models built between April and May 2008 could have had problems caused by inadequate power steering hoses, which degraded and allowed hydraulic fluid to seep out. Normally this caused the power steering to fail but in some cases the leaking fluid became hot and caused a fire.
  • Rear hub bolt problems: Some models built between February and April 2007 had problems with the rear hub bolts which could work loose because they weren’t made to the correct specification.

These issues have been reported by a significant number of Ford Focus 2000 owners, and while some have resulted in recalls, it is essential to be aware of these problems when purchasing or maintaining a Ford Focus 2000.

Negative Ford Focus 2000 car reviews

  1. Jaylen Steuber 2024-11-12

The Focus has unfortunately left me with a negative impression of all Fords. The car has experienced numerous issues, including recalls during my ownership, a costly transmission replacement at 70K, and the need for additional repairs such as O2 sensors and fuel gauge sensors. Despite spending an additional $1,000 on repairs, the car's trade-in value is now equivalent to the total amount spent on repairs. Due to these experiences, I have decided to move on from this car.

  2. Jordon Brakus 2024-10-29

Let's take a look. At 15,000 miles, I had to get new brakes and throttle body. At 45,000 miles, I had to replace the oxygen sensor twice. I also had to replace the shocks twice. Unfortunately, the air conditioner broke and the heat and wipers sometimes had issues. At 73,000 miles, I had to replace the transmission, and at 74,000 miles, my brakes failed (they wouldn't work at all).

  3. Ceasar Beer 2024-09-24

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Focus Wagon SE that I bought back in January 2001. Although I've only driven about 14k miles, I've had to take it to the dealership about a dozen times. Unfortunately, some things have broken and fallen off, and we've had some nasty vibrations from the wheels, especially during braking, ever since they rotated the tires. I even had to re-rotate and re-balance them somewhere else at my own cost. On top of that, I just received another recall notice. Despite all of this, I'm still holding onto the car because the resale value is less than what I owe. However, I must admit that I'm quite disappointed and won't be buying a Ford again. Thanks for listening!

  4. Kendrick Hayes 2024-09-21

I received this car from my aunt about two years ago, and although it was in a pretty bad shape, I managed to fix it up with an investment of around $1300. The best part about this car is how enjoyable it is to drive. It's incredibly fast and responsive, and I love the feeling of being in control. While the interior is nice, it does feel a bit cheap, and the exterior, although stylish, is made with some low-quality parts. I do worry about its longevity, but who knows, it might just last me forever!

  5. Baylee Bogan 2024-08-18

I bought this car new and have had it for 3 years (27,500 miles). Although it has had some issues, it has also been a fun car to drive. I love the cargo room with the back seat down and the good back seat leg room. It's also easy to maneuver and has some zip to it. However, I have had to bring it back for a few recalls, including the wipers and backseat latch, and the stereo had to be replaced. Unfortunately, some things that should work for a certain amount of time don't, like the rear power window which recently failed and now needs to be replaced, just 3 weeks after the warranty expired. Overall, I wouldn't buy another one, but it's important to remember that you get what you pay for.

Positive Ford Focus 2000 car reviews

  1. Hillard Tremblay 2024-11-04

I'm so glad we got the Focus! Even with a full size 1951 Plymouth Station Wagon, we still have plenty of cargo space. We really like everything about it so far, although the gas mileage hasn't been as good as advertised even after a complete tuneup, oil change, filter, and air filter. It's only in the lower 20's. But overall, it's a fantastic car for the money!

  2. Orval Schaden 2024-11-02

I am thrilled with my purchase! Although I've only had it for a couple of days, I rented one for a week in Atlanta last year and absolutely loved it. It's spacious enough for my kids and dogs, and at a very reasonable price. It's also incredibly comfortable. So far, everything seems to be working perfectly, but I did purchase a comprehensive warranty just to be safe...

  3. Elmo Ritchie 2024-10-21

I was rear-ended by a person who was not watching the road, resulting in an impact of approximately 40mph. Despite this, the passenger compartment held up exceptionally well with no broken glass. While the doors do open, they do not close as well as they did before the accident.

  4. Fernando Greenfelder 2024-10-18

I purchased this car brand new in September 2000 from an award-winning dealer. The design is brilliant, with exceptional ergonomics that make it fun to drive. It also has a versatile and spacious cargo capacity. However, there were some issues with recalls and brake problems, and unfortunately, the air conditioner failed at only 29,000 miles, just 6 months out of warranty. The cost to replace it was $1,500, and with only a 1-year warranty, I decided not to go through with it. It's worth noting that in October 2000, Consumer Reports rated the Focus as the second-best of six wagons tested, and in April 2001, it was rated as the No. 1 small sedan. However, reliability had not yet been established at that time.

  5. Greg Sanford 2024-10-13

I've always been a fan of trucks, but I had to switch to a car for better fuel economy. However, the transition was not difficult at all. I can easily fold down the back seat and utilize the cargo area, tow a small trailer, put things on the roof rack, or comfortably seat passengers in the back - all while zipping around with its zippy engine, getting great gas mileage, and being able to park anywhere! The ride is smooth and quiet, the car handles great, and the interior is spacious and comfortable. Additionally, the exterior looks stylish and modern, setting it apart from other station wagons. I've driven many miles and kept up with maintenance, and I'm happy to report that I've had no problems with this reliable car. Overall, I absolutely love this car and it's no surprise that consumer reports rates it as one of the best.
