2001 Ford Escape problems

ford logo

The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).

Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2001 Ford Escape problems

The Ford Escape 2001 is known for several common problems, primarily transmission issues and engine woes.

Transmission problems are the most frequently reported issues with the Ford Escape 2001. These problems can be caused by faulty electric motors, sensors, and control units, which often require replacement.

Engine stumbling and hesitation are also common problems in the Ford Escape 2001. These issues can cause the engine light to illuminate and may require replacement of ignition coils or boots, which can cost around $150.

Power steering loss is another issue reported by Ford Escape 2001 owners. This problem can be caused by a malfunctioning steering torque sensor and can be resolved by reprogramming the system, which can cost between $80 and $150.

Door latch problems were a common issue in the early years of the third-generation Ford Escape (2013-2015), but the 2001 model does not appear to be affected by this issue.

It is important to note that some Ford Escape models, particularly the 2008 and 2011 models, have been reported to be less reliable compared to other SUV juggernauts like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

In summary, the Ford Escape 2001 is known for transmission problems, engine woes, and power steering loss. These issues can be costly to repair, but most of them can be fixed in a dealership or other mechanics. It is recommended to conduct thorough research and inspection before purchasing any used vehicle, especially the 2008 and 2011 models of the Ford Escape.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-10
  • VIN: 1FMYU04141K
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO OUR MECHANIC FOR OTHER WORK TO BE DONE. HE NOTED THAT THE SUSPENSION PART (WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY REMEDIATED WITH THE APPLICATION OF A BRACKET WITH A RECALL) IS EXCESSIVELY RUSTED. WHILE I SURELY UNDERSTAND THAT RUST IS A FACTOR OF TIME AND MILES, WE HAVE AROUND ONLY 90,000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THAT THE BRACKET WAS THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR FMC TO APPLY. AS A RESULT, I FEAR THAT THERE ARE MANY MORE DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE WHO MAY ERRONEOUSLY BELIEVE THAT THE ISSUE WITH THE SUSPENSION HAD BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE RECALL AND MAY BE UNDER THE ILLUSION THAT THEY ARE DRIVING A SAFE VEHICLE. I DO NOT HAVE PHOTOS AT THIS TIME, BUT WILL PROVIDE THEM LATER.

2001 Ford Escape recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 15 recalls for different components of the 2001 Ford Escape.

2015-09-29
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
  • Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
2015-06-03
  • Manufacturer: Timken Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
  • Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
  • Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
2014-04-02
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
  • Consequence: A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S02.
2012-07-26
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
  • Consequence: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

  • Consequence: CORROSION CAN DEVELOP IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR LEADING TO MELTING, SMOKE OR A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR CAP AND THE ABS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WILL BE MODIFIED. AN INTERIM LETTER WAS MAILED ON JANUARY 20, 2012. DUE TO A PARTS DELAY, HOWEVER, THE REMEDY MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE CURRENTLY. IF PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE, FORD WILL INSTRUCT OWNERS TO PARK THEIR VEHICLES OUTSIDE UNTIL SUCH TIME AS PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER AT 1-866-436-7332. THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN IS RELATED TO 07V-156.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES (ABS), THE ABS MODULE CONNECTOR MAY HAVE MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS. THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE MODULE CONNECTOR, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.
  • Consequence: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT MIGHT CAUSE AN ABS MALFUNCTION THAT WOULD ILLUMINATE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT, AND IN SOME CASES, THE MODULE MAY OVERHEAT RESULTING IN BURNING ODOR, SMOKE, AND/OR FIRE. THIS CONDITION COULD OCCUR EITHER WHEN THE VEHICLE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION OR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE ABS MODULE FOR MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS, AND REPAIR OR REPLACE THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AS APPROPRIATE. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS MODULE AND REPLACE IT IF IT IS FOUND TO BE CORRODED OR DAMAGED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, A POST WITHIN THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE COVERS COULD FRACTURE, WHICH COULD AFFECT LATCH FUNCTION, RESULTING IN EITHER A "NO LATCH" OR "PARTIAL LATCH" CONDITION. IN THE "PARTIAL LATCH" CONDITION, THE BUCKLE TONGUE CAN BE INSERTED INTO THE BUCKLE AND APPEAR TO BE ENGAGED, BUT WILL RELEASE FROM THE BUCKLE WITHOUT THE PUSH BUTTON BEING DEPRESSED WHEN A RELATIVELY LOW LOAD IS APPLIED, SUCH AS WHEN AN OCCUPANT MOVES SLIGHTLY IN THE SEAT.
  • Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE SEAT OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL HAVE THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER SAFETY BELT BUCKLE COVER REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED SERVICE BUCKLE COVER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 2, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Negative 2001 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Abel Streich 2024-09-06

I recently bought this car because it looked great both inside and out, and I thought it would make a reliable second car. Unfortunately, I didn't have it inspected before purchasing it, so I only have myself to blame. The vehicle has some issues, such as oil leaks and a failing transmission. Additionally, the fog lights didn't work when I took delivery, and all four tires leak air. While I was disappointed with my purchase, I understand that sometimes things don't go as planned. I won't be keeping this car for long, but I hope someone else can enjoy it and get it running smoothly.

  2. Peter Becker 2024-07-11

Before buying, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, the resale value may be affected by recent poor crash test results, in which the Hyundai Santa Fe fared better. Secondly, having a mini-spare tire on an SUV may not be the most practical choice. Thirdly, the Escape has drum brakes on the rear, which is not as strong as the 4-wheel disc brakes found on the CR-V and Santa Fe. Additionally, the Escape may come across as cheaply made, with uncomfortable seats and thin paint. It seems that Ford has cost-engineered the Escape to the max.

  3. Austyn Kihn 2024-05-01

I really appreciate the well-designed and easy-to-see features of the Escape, as well as its good size and fuel efficiency. However, I have experienced some issues with the car, including several costly repairs ranging from $300 to $900. For example, the antitheft starter malfunctioned and took a long time to diagnose, costing me $500 and leaving me stranded. Additionally, the lock broke and needed a $300 repair, and the valves broke, which cost me $600. Finally, the A/C stopped working and required a $900 repair. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving the Escape and appreciate its many positive qualities.

Bought used with 116K miles. Vehicle is now seven years old now and looks and drives great. The interior is still in perfect condition. Leather seats are barely worn. Went up from sedan to this due to having a child. Great room and car seats are a breeze now.

What a fantastic piece of machinery! It's simply amazing.

  2. Travis Kuhlman 2024-09-18

I have owned my v4 5spd xls for exactly one year with 15000 miles. While my ownership has been short, I have not encountered any problems so far and I am impressed with the price to value and mpg. The interior is very roomy with great headroom and good trunk space for a mini-sub, making it ideal for small families that require childseats. The car shifts smoothly, although the engine has a slight 'stalling' feeling when coming to a stop. The ride is a bit bumpy, but this is expected for an SUV. While the engine noise is a bit loud, it is okay with me as it helps to drown out crying kids!

  3. Deontae Schaden 2024-09-13

I've been driving my Escape for a year and four months now, and it's still a lot of fun to drive. It has plenty of pep and provides a smooth ride. While there is some wind noise, it's not unbearable. Additionally, there is ample room in the back for passengers. However, there are a few downsides to consider. Firstly, it seems to wear on tires more than other vehicles. Secondly, I've noticed a short in my sunroof switch. Lastly, the cargo cover broke within the first six months. Overall, though, I'm still very happy with my Escape!

  4. Maverick Yost 2024-08-28

Hi there! I'm excited to share that we recently upgraded to our 2nd Escape. We had a 2001 2WD 6cyl XLT, and now we have a 2002 4WD with leather, moonroof, and all the options. I must say, this newer one is much tighter, more solid, and more enjoyable. It even seems quieter too! We've found that this vehicle is perfect for a multitude of purposes, from family vacations to business appointments to hauling. Thanks for letting me share!

  5. Gavin Goyette 2024-07-21

Two years have almost passed and our vehicle has covered 24000 miles. Despite having to replace the tires at 23000 miles and experiencing some front end alignment issues, we are pleased to report that the check engine light came on but was fixed by the dealer without any problems. Overall, we are happy with our little truck (or wagon?) and my wife loves it. We would definitely consider buying it again.
