2003 Ford Escape problems
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.
The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).
Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2003 Ford Escape problems
The 2003 Ford Escape has several common problems based on complaints from owners. The most frequently reported issues are related to structure, suspension, and powertrain.
- Structure Issues: The leading problem is premature corrosion, which accounts for 120 of the 594 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This issue is primarily found in Midwestern states where road salt seems to be causing significant damage to the SUV's subframe.
- Suspension Problems: There are 92 complaints related to suspension issues, again primarily due to premature corrosion. Control arms have been known to rust until they fail entirely. These problems can be prevented with a layer of preventive spray, but once rust has settled in, it might not be worth trying to save the components.
- Powertrain Complaints: There are 64 powertrain complaints on file, which is relatively high for an SUV with fewer than 600 complaints overall. Recent issues, such as transmission shudder, seem to be symptoms of simple wear and tear. However, these issues serve as a reminder to test drive and inspect the vehicle before purchasing.
- Ignition Coils: Ford Escapes from 2001 to 2013, including the 2003 model, have experienced problems with bad ignition coils. A faulty ignition coil can cause the engine to misfire, leading to stalling, sputtering sounds, jerking, vibrating, and difficulty starting.
- Power Steering: Second- and third-generation Ford Escapes, including the 2003 model, often suffer from power steering issues, which increase the effort needed to turn the steering wheel, especially at lower speeds. These problems are linked to sudden failures in the Electric Power Assisted Steering system, which halts the power steering control module (PSCM). These failures can be solved with a PSCM update, but faulty motors, sensors, and control units may require replacing the entire unit, which could cost up to $2,000.
These common problems with the 2003 Ford Escape are based on complaints from owners and should be considered when purchasing, maintaining, or repairing this vehicle. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of the vehicle.

- VIN: 1FMCU04123K
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Driver had uneasy feeling with stability of vehicle as if it was swaying. He got it looked at and was told he probably needed lower control arm and links to take care of the problem. After ordering parts, the vehicle, while driving to work, a loud popping sound was heard and then the vehicle dropped down and had to be towed home (thank God this didn't happen on the expressway). I then looked up any recalls on this vehicle and low and behold there was a recall on this year, make and model car BUT not on this VIN number (Ford's number for this recall is 14S02. Recall date 2014-04-02 Recall no.14V165000). This vehicle suddenly and dangerously broke down from this same problem, and has the same issue that was recalled by Ford on this make, model and year described in their recall (14S02) but the VIN number seems to say otherwise when I looked it up. This needs to be investgated before this happens to someone while driving in snow or rainy condtions or while driving on the expressway. Please investigate!

2003 Ford Escape recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2003 Ford Escape.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
- Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
- Consequence: A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S02.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
- Consequence: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES (ABS), THE ABS MODULE CONNECTOR MAY HAVE MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS. THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE MODULE CONNECTOR, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.
- Consequence: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT MIGHT CAUSE AN ABS MALFUNCTION THAT WOULD ILLUMINATE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT, AND IN SOME CASES, THE MODULE MAY OVERHEAT RESULTING IN BURNING ODOR, SMOKE, AND/OR FIRE. THIS CONDITION COULD OCCUR EITHER WHEN THE VEHICLE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION OR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE ABS MODULE FOR MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS, AND REPAIR OR REPLACE THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AS APPROPRIATE. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS MODULE AND REPLACE IT IF IT IS FOUND TO BE CORRODED OR DAMAGED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Escape. I've had it since it was brand new and I've loved it ever since. Even with over 108K miles, it still has a lot of power and handles very well. It's also very roomy, but not difficult to maneuver like larger SUVs. Recently, I was involved in a serious accident while driving my Escape and I have to commend it from a safety perspective. I was sitting at a red light when a utility truck traveling at a high rate of speed hit me from behind, pushing me into a full-sized truck in front of me. Unfortunately, my Escape is a total loss, but I'm grateful to have only suffered a broken toe and a few bruises. I'm very impressed with the overall safety of this vehicle and would certainly recommend it for any family. Take care!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it since 2006 and it's been a reliable car for me, especially during the winter months. It's also great for pulling a trailer. While it may not be the most comfortable ride, it's not too bad for longer drives. However, I did notice that the gas mileage was a bit disappointing for a small SUV. I just wanted to give you a heads up that once it reaches 150k+ miles, repairs can start to add up and become expensive. I've had to replace a few things like the catalytic converters, brake system, front axles, and even had to do a rear frame repair due to rust. I also had to do a slight engine overhaul with belts, gaskets, coils, etc. Despite all of that, my car is still running well with over 190k miles on it. Thanks for listening!

The driving experience is excellent! I found the handling, cornering, acceleration and braking to be above average or better. I was aware of several specific shortcomings of the vehicle, but all were solved by add-ons at purchase. For example, several Ford models are known to have transmission issues at 100,000 miles or more. However, this is easily solved by purchasing the TOWING package that adds a transmission cooling system and radiator to prevent transmission damage. Thanks to this package, my transmission has never so much as slipped. Additionally, the soft paint and rust issue is partly solved by a rubberized undercoating and wheel well sheathing. Overall, I think the car is wonderful and I would definitely buy it again!

Compared to other cars in the subcompact SUV class, the Escape's V6 engine has the power and performance to lead the pack. Although our family's lifestyle includes summer camping trips and winter ski trips in Western New York, we did not feel the need for 4WD. The front-wheel-drive version has been enough to get us where we want to go. An added benefit is better gas mileage with the FWD. On the highway, we average 25 mpg and in the city, we average 23 mpg.

The car has great performance and handles very well. Its fuel economy is average for its class, at 20 mpg overall. Although it has been driven mostly on highways, it has also been taken to the beach and driven in the snow, where it performed well on both terrains. The only issues with the vehicle were a dirty throttle body that was cleaned and a sensor that was replaced for the back-up system.

Three months after I purchased it, the transmission started to break down. Although the Ford dealership attempted to fix it, they were unable to. They claimed the computer module had to be reprogrammed, so they did, but the slipping problems still keep reoccurring. It seems like this SUV may not be ready for prime time. Please keep in mind that you may not be compensated for any inconveniences or headaches you may experience.

I would not recommend purchasing this car again due to its inferior interior and frequent issues with the transmission. Despite the fact that the dealer was unable to identify any problems, the car would frequently not go in reverse and required multiple attempts to do so. Additionally, the seats were very uncomfortable and provided no back support. However, I do appreciate the benefits of a smaller SUV, just not this particular model.

I had to have my transmission replaced with a rebuilt one despite my car being only a year old and having 13000 miles. The service I received from the dealership was unsatisfactory and this is the second time I have had to bring it in for stalling reasons. As a result, I do not feel confident driving this SUV and will not be purchasing another Ford car.

In the second month of owning the vehicle, there were some electrical issues. By the fifth month, the front wheel bearings needed to be replaced. Additionally, the seats were quite uncomfortable and the side bags were not standard. The air conditioner was slow to cool and the exterior side bar steps were unnecessary. The speakers were of poor quality and the independent suspension caused some wiggling on the highway. The cabin was also quite noisy on the road. Although Ford stands behind their warranty, it can be frustrating to have so many repairs in the first year.

The seating arrangement and console setup could be improved. However, the transmission problems were resolved by the dealer within the first 2 months, and two tires needed replacing due to bubble developments. While I am not completely satisfied with my purchase, I acknowledge that I should have compared other similar vehicles before making a decision.
