2002 Ford Escape problems

ford logo

The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).

Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2002 Ford Escape problems

The Ford Escape, like any car, can have issues that affect its performance and safety. Here are some common problems with the 2002 Ford Escape, based on complaints from owners:

  • Power Steering Problems: The 2002 Ford Escape may experience issues with the power steering, making it harder to turn the steering wheel, especially at lower speeds. This problem is often caused by sudden failures in the Electric Power Assisted Steering system, which affects the power steering control module (PSCM). While Ford has issued PSCM updates to address this issue, it might also be caused by faulty motors, sensors, or control units, which could require replacing the entire unit, potentially costing up to $2,000.
  • Transmission Failure: The 2002 Ford Escape can experience transmission failure, which can occur without warning, causing the vehicle to stop suddenly in the middle of the road. This issue is more common in vehicles with 70,000 or more miles driven. Transmission failure can be costly to repair, often requiring rebuilding or replacing the entire transmission, which can cost more than $3,000.
  • Faulty Bushing in the Shift Cable: Ford has issued a recall for more than 1.7 million Ford Escape models, including the 2002 model, due to a faulty bushing that connects the shift cable to the transmission. This issue can prevent the shifter from moving the transmission into the desired gear position, causing the shifter position to show the vehicle is in Reverse when it is actually in Drive, resulting in unintended movement.
  • Noisy Brakes: The 2002 Ford Escape is known for its noisy brakes, which can be caused by warmed-up or specific driving conditions. Ford has stated that owners can resolve these issues by installing a front lining kit, which improves control and friction to decrease noise.
  • Deteriorating and Collapsing Brake Lines: Newer Ford Escapes, including the 2002 model, have experienced problems with deteriorating and collapsing brake lines, forcing Ford to issue a recall. This issue requires a rear brake line replacement with a higher-friction unit to solve the problem.

In summary, the 2002 Ford Escape can have various issues, including ignition misfires, power steering problems, transmission failure, faulty bushing in the shift cable, noisy brakes, and deteriorating and collapsing brake lines. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and performance of the vehicle.

2002 Ford Escape recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2002 Ford Escape.

2015-09-29
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
  • Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
2015-06-03
  • Manufacturer: Timken Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
  • Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
  • Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
2014-04-02
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
  • Consequence: A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S02.
2012-07-26
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
  • Consequence: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2001-2002 ESCAPE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 22, 1999, THROUGH JULY 19, 2002, EQUIPPED WITH A BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR CAP THAT COULD LEAK BRAKE FLUID. IF BRAKE FLUID LEAKS FROM THE CAP, IT COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR.
  • Consequence: CORROSION CAN DEVELOP IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR LEADING TO MELTING, SMOKE OR A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR CAP AND THE ABS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WILL BE MODIFIED. AN INTERIM LETTER WAS MAILED ON JANUARY 20, 2012. DUE TO A PARTS DELAY, HOWEVER, THE REMEDY MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE CURRENTLY. IF PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE, FORD WILL INSTRUCT OWNERS TO PARK THEIR VEHICLES OUTSIDE UNTIL SUCH TIME AS PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER AT 1-866-436-7332. THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN IS RELATED TO 07V-156.
2007-04-10
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES (ABS), THE ABS MODULE CONNECTOR MAY HAVE MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS. THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE MODULE CONNECTOR, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.
  • Consequence: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT MIGHT CAUSE AN ABS MALFUNCTION THAT WOULD ILLUMINATE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT, AND IN SOME CASES, THE MODULE MAY OVERHEAT RESULTING IN BURNING ODOR, SMOKE, AND/OR FIRE. THIS CONDITION COULD OCCUR EITHER WHEN THE VEHICLE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION OR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE ABS MODULE FOR MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS, AND REPAIR OR REPLACE THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AS APPROPRIATE. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS MODULE AND REPLACE IT IF IT IS FOUND TO BE CORRODED OR DAMAGED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Negative 2002 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Jayce Batz 2024-10-27

I had a 1991 Ford Explorer, my first Ford. Loved it! So when it was time to get a new car, I decided to go with a 2002 Ford Escape. Unfortunately, I've had nothing but problems with it. From transmission issues on day 1 to the air intake chip going bad twice. Despite all the problems, I still love the design and continue to drive it.

I will never purchase a Ford again. This car has been plagued with unexpected surprises, such as a spark plug flying out and the brakes failing. It is not a reliable vehicle and poses a potential safety risk.

Although I had some issues with this truck, I must say that it has a cute design. The brakes and rotors needed replacement at 32,000 miles, and the CD changer had to be replaced as well. The driver's window also made a screaching sound when going up and down, and there were some other noises that the dealership had trouble identifying for 3 months. Additionally, the transaxle damper went out and it took Ford 4 months to get a part. The road noise is quite noticeable and it tends to wear out tires quickly. However, I believe that Ford could learn from our foreign competitors. I would not recommend purchasing this truck, but I appreciate its cute design.

Your vehicle is comfortable and drives well. Although the mileage was high, it was in good shape when you purchased it in January of this year. For the first four months, you had no problems with it. However, in the last four months, it has started to cost you money. You had to replace the tire rod in the front, and now you need to replace the cv-joint so the anti-lock brakes will work. Additionally, the belts in your tires are bad, and there is always a light bulb going out.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my vehicle over the past year. While I've had a few engine problems, they were minor and didn't cause any major inconveniences. On the bright side, the vehicle's performance is excellent! It handles like a dream and the acceleration is quick. The cargo room is adequate and the back seats fold down with little effort, which is great. However, I do have some concerns about the safety of the vehicle's thin, light-weight doors in the event of an accident. Additionally, I highly recommend getting the center console as it makes a big difference in the overall driving experience. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2002 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Ariel McDermott 2024-11-29

The vehicle rides smoothly and has a great interior and exterior design. It also boasts great fuel economy and a fantastic sound system.

  2. Maxine Orn 2024-11-16

This is a great car overall, but there are some design flaws that make it a bit high maintenance once the warranty is up. I had some trouble with the wiring and windshield cracks, but it still got me where I needed to go with minimal issues. The ride is smooth and it comfortably fits 5 people.

  3. Chet Collins 2024-10-26

Wow! I'm so glad to hear that your Ford Escape has been treating you well, especially in the harsh Canadian winters. It's great to know that you've had no problems off-roading in it and that it's a strong SUV with metal parts in all the right places. While the fuel economy may take some getting used to, it's to be expected in a nearly 4000 pound vehicle that also tows great. I hope you continue to enjoy your Escape for many more years to come!

  4. Gonzalo Ritchie 2024-10-24

This car is exactly what you're looking for - and at the right price! You won't be disappointed with this SUV, which was rated the best in 2002. It's both fun and reliable, getting about 300 miles per tank in the city. The midsize shape makes it easy to drive, and the modern, sporty design is perfect for young professionals looking to make a smart investment.

  5. Garnet Pollich 2024-10-19

I remember seeing the Escape for the first time when it arrived on the scene. I told my husband that I wanted that car when I was ready to get another one. In 2002, I finally bought my first Escape and I have never regretted it. I absolutely love this car! It has 105000 miles on it now and it has never been in the shop for more than the usual oil changes. As I have gotten older, I have had trouble climbing out of most cars, but with my Escape, I can easily climb up and hop down. That was the main reason I wanted a small SUV. Additionally, I have a horse and this great car can carry all my horse equipment with no problem. I think American cars get a bad reputation, but I get 21 miles to the gallon on the highway (I drive 30 miles to work each way). I just love it!
