2006 Ford Escape problems
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.
The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).
Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2006 Ford Escape problems
The 2006 Ford Escape is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners, including transmission failures, engine issues, and excessive rust on the shock mounts.
- Transmission Failures: Transmission failures are a widespread issue in the 2006 Ford Escape, with complaints starting at around 85,000 miles. The failure can result in the need for a rebuild, which costs approximately $2,000, or a new unit, which can cost over $3,000.
- Engine Failures: Engine failures are another common problem, occurring around 90,000 miles. The components in the engine wear out quickly, and replacing the entire engine can cost roughly $4,500, depending on local labor rates.
- Rusted Shock Mounts: At around 120,000 miles, the metal on the shock mounts can become thin and rust through, increasing the risk of accidents. Installing new mounting brackets costs around $1,000.
- Ignition Coils: The ignition coils are crucial for the ignition system, and issues with them can cause the car not to start or run poorly. Symptoms include a misfire, a check engine light, or the engine not running smoothly. Moisture, debris, or worn-out components can cause these issues .
- DPFE Sensor: The Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor is responsible for monitoring the exhaust gas recirculation system. Faulty sensors can lead to engine performance issues and a check engine light .
- Blower Motor Resistor: The blower motor resistor controls the fan speed for the car's heating and air conditioning system. A failing resistor can result in inconsistent fan speeds or no airflow at all .
- Transfer Case: The transfer case is responsible for transmitting power from the transmission to the front and rear axles in four-wheel-drive vehicles. Issues with the transfer case can lead to difficulty shifting or engaging four-wheel-drive .
- Tailgate Glass: The tailgate glass can have issues, including falling out or not staying up. This can be caused by worn-out components or debris in the tracks .
These common problems with the 2006 Ford Escape can lead to significant repair costs and decreased reliability. It is essential to consider these issues when purchasing or maintaining a 2006 Ford Escape.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
- VIN: 1FMCU96HX6K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Like so many others, I was making a sharp right turn when the vehicle stopped without warning causing cars behind me to slam on their brakes to avoid a chain rear end collision event on a busy intersection. Another driver offered help and got it restarted but the power steering stopped functioning. He pulled it off the road and I then had to drive it home. The light came on after saying "power steering service" and a wrench light. There were no codes to be read and I have been unable to get a straight answer from mechanics. The last said I need the power steering module and the rack and pinion. I finally got him to give me the specific part numbers, both of which are DISCONTINUED. Last week, I told another mechanic the problems and parts I needed and he gave me a total guestimate under $2000, so I decided to go with them and they ordered the parts. When I looked at the estimate, they did not match the part numbers I had been given, and I just found out they didnt include the module because it's discontinued. I cancelled the work. I have no options left that I can afford. THIS PROBLEM IS PERVASIVE IN THESE FORD ESCAPE MODELS AND YEARS, yet they haven't recalled any before 2008. This needs to be addressed because Ive also had the intermittent engine shutdown on the road saying "STOP NOW". Luckily, no accidents or injuries yet, but I wouldn't trust this to travel beyond my area. Shame on Ford!
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1FMYU03186K

There was no warning that this was happening until it broke while driving which made us lose control of the car. When we took it to a repair shop and said it was 2006 escape they responded what side did the shock tower break on this was before we told them it was a shock tower they said it's always that part on a escape I personally know 2 other people who have had the same problem all different years of escapes.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
- VIN: 1FMYU03146K

- Summary: Both rear shocks, mounts, wheel wells, entire length of body door panels passenger seats are just absolutely rusted beyond repair. I've gone to a couple different shops and each one said that there is nothing they can do to fix the issue. Now the vehicle when ridden in just bounces horribly wearing out bearing springs and tires are being worn out. There is only 110759 miles on it and bought this for my wife/ kids cause I've had 3 other escapes in the past so since I work on the road this is prefect sized for then not to big or too small. I've had so many issues this last year with repairs parts and now worried about safety issues.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-29
- VIN: 1FMYU96H66K
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: This 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid, and all first and second generation (2001-2012) Escape models, were designed and built with a significant, known defect in the mating area and materials used for the rear floor pan, rear sub-assembly/rails, and rear inner fender liners/upper shock absorber mounts, all made of pressed steel. The design of the components renders them subject to trapping road debris/salt/contaminants, and the inferior steel used oxidizes quickly, resulting in perforated areas of substantial rust. In our 2006 model, the right rear inner fender liner was completely replaced, and the rear subassembly/rails were welded, in 2013 with new Ford parts. By May, 2018, it had to be repaired and welded again. As of May, 2013, five years almost to the day, it has again rusted and separated. As this hybrid Escape carries a 600 pound battery between the rails in the rear of the vehicle, this is a substantial, dangerous defect affecting potentially millions of cars manufactured over a decade. The current status of the oxidation, corrosion, rot and decay affecting our Ford Escape has rendered it incapable of being repaired per the auto mechanic shop we visited first, followed by the body shop we visited next. Both indicated that the poor design combined with the steel used contributed to the dangerous vehicle it has become.

2006 Ford Escape recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2006 Ford Escape.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
- Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured October 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.
- Consequence: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.
- Manufacturer: MARATHON SEAT COVERS, INC.

THESE SEAT COVERS ARE MADE OF HEAVIER THREAD AND ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH SEATS CONTAINING SIDE AIRBAGS. THE HEAVIER SEAT COVER COULD INTERFERE WITH FULL DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAG IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Consequence: AN IMPROPERLY DEPLOYED AIRBAG COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY.
- Remedy: MARATHON WILL NOTIFY OWNERS OF RECORD AND REPLACE THE SEAT COVER FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MARATHON AT 1-800-735-2769.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, PASSENGER CARS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITHOUT GREASE BEING APPLIED TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR.
- Consequence: AFTER A PERIOD OF CONTINUOUS USE ON THE HIGH SPEED SETTING, LACK OF GREASE ON THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR MAY CAUSE THE GEAR TO DISTORT OR FRACTURE DURING OPERATION RESULTING IN A LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION. INOPERATIVE WIPERS UNDER INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD CAUSE A CRASH DUE TO IMPAIRED VISIBILITY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIPER MOTOR FOR THE PRESENCE OF GREASE AND GREASE THE WIPER MOTOR GEARS IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673 OR LINCOLN/MERCURY AT 1-800-521-4140.
Negative 2006 Ford Escape car reviews
Positive 2006 Ford Escape car reviews

The convenience of the 6 disc in dash CD is great. There's plenty of interior room for hauling or keeping passengers comfy. The acceleration is normal even when put into passing mode. The view out the windshield is superb, but because of the 3 headrests in the back, viewing behind you can be a little work. Overall, I'm very pleased with the '06 Escape XLT and would highly recommend it to others.
-
I owned a 2005 and put 7000 miles on it before deciding to upgrade to a new 2006 model with fewer features. The ride is fantastic, especially since it's a 4X4. The gas mileage is decent, averaging 22 miles per gallon. I haven't experienced any rattling inside the car, and the 4-cylinder engine provides enough power to go anywhere. I even took it through a muddy field with no issues. Overall, this car is excellent!
-
If you come across one of these with low mileage like mine - 119k - be prepared to spend some money on it, even if it's in great condition. The dealer will only address safety-related concerns. I ended up spending an additional 1.7k to replace the head gasket and hoses, as well as change the transmission fluid. Despite this, my mechanic believed that I made an excellent decision.
-
I rated my 06 Escape back in Aug 06 and I have been very pleased with it ever since. Now, after 2 years of ownership, I can confidently say that I absolutely love it! I have not experienced any issues with it whatsoever. However, I did have to replace the Continental tires at 31,000 miles. Although they looked brand new, they were incredibly loud and made the car sound like it had 4 snow tires on it. I never realized how quiet the Escape was until I replaced the tires. Now, with the new tires, it is so quiet and smooth. Overall, I really enjoy driving this SUV and I hope to continue driving it for several more years. I have no complaints at all!

I purchased this vehicle used in January 2007 and have put 40,000 miles on it without any issues. I make sure to change the oil and filters regularly, but other than that, I haven't had to do anything else. The brakes are still like new and I expect to get 75,000 miles or more on the pads. The Continental tires still have 40% tread left and I expect to get 65,000 miles on them. The vehicle performs well in snow and I have driven through 2ft+ snow storms without any problems. It also handles rain storms well. The highway mileage is 24+mpg, which is impressive for an SUV. The city mileage brings the overall mileage down to 21.1mpg, which is still pretty good. Long story short, this is a great vehicle and I would definitely consider buying another one.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my previous car, a used Escape with just under 70000 KM on it. While I enjoyed driving it, I did have to get a few things fixed over the two and a half years I owned it. However, I'm happy to say that I've now upgraded to a 2009 Santa Fe which I find to be a far superior vehicle. Thanks for listening!

My Escape came from the factory with the front end out of alignment and a steering wheel vibration that comes and goes. The front tires were damaged and Ford refused to replace them. They did align the front end but have not been able to cure the vibration. The engine runs well and has good power for a 4 cylinder but often hesitates when cold. The ride and handling are good. It has some wind noise but it is not offensive. I would not recommend buying this vehicle.

This vehicle has experienced a number of issues in the past 34 months, with multiple transmission failures, ABS/power brake failures, tire pressure sensor failures, a leaking rear axle seal, a malfunctioning windshield washer sensor light, loose parts in the floor or dash, understeering issues, and rounded out tires. The first gear is also not ideal due to poor gear ratios, and the average fuel economy is 14.62 miles per gallon or 16.01 liters/100km. These issues are concerning, but it is important to note that they are specific to this vehicle and may not be representative of the entire model range.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the SUV I bought back in February. We decided to go for a used one because we really liked the look of it, especially in charcoal grey. The handling and pick-up are really impressive, and it's been great in all kinds of weather conditions. The previous owner had ordered an all-leather steering wheel, which was a really nice touch, and the sound system is amazing - it has a 6 CD changer, 6 speakers, and a built-in amp. It really has all the bells and whistles! The only downside is that it's not the most fuel-efficient vehicle out there - I can only get around 450km per tank, and it costs around $45 to fill up. But overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

I generally like the Escape. However, the gas mileage leaves a lot to be desired. I am getting less than 16 mpg in the city and 20-21 on the highway. You would think that for a small SUV Ford would be able to do better in the MPG area. Also, this is the first SUV that I have owned. I was a little surprised at the bumpy ride, although not terrible, still a bit rough.
