1999 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-21
  • VIN: 1FTZR15V1XP
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I was driving to the store around 1 month ago and I noticed the truck was trying to tail to the side as I was driving. I thought nothing of it until my Uncle Bobby noticed my rear shock was scraping the ground. We looked underneath to investigate and found both shock mounts completely rusted off and the frame in terrible shape. The truck itself barely has any rust other than the tailgate and bed floor. Also thought I should include that the hose that connect the gas tank and where you pump the gas is rusted to where every time I pump gas, a little drips out onto the floor. I was trying to find videos on how to fix it but came across a page that says Rangers have been recalled from the years 1995 to 2000 because of Toyota starting to make frames for them. *EDIT* Also would like to mention that the frame where the bumper attaches to on the driver side has cracked and now the bumper is sagging down .

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-04-26
  • VIN: 1FTYR10C1XT
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: FRAME ROT... THE FRAME HAS RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE-OUT IN THE SAME PLACE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE: UNDER THE MOST-FRONT PART OF EACH DOOR (KEEP IN MIND THIS IS THE FRAME I'M TALKING ABOUT, NOT ANY KIND OF DOOR SUPPORT OR FRAMING... THIS IS THE SECTION OF BODY FRAME THAT IS LOCATED UNDERNEATH EACH DOOR ON THE VEHICLE). THE FRAME HAS RUSTED AND BEGUN TO SPLIT HORIZONTALLY (THE LENGTH OF THE VEHICLE) AND VERTICALLY (FROM THE GROUND-UP). WHEN LIFTING THE VEHICLE IN CERTAIN PLACES, THE FRAME CAN BE SEEN BENDING, OBVIOUSLY. BECAUSE OF THIS I CAN ONLY JACK/LIFT THE VEHICLE FROM THE VERY FRONT... ALL OTHER PLACES THAT I'VE TRIED TO LIFT FROM RESULT IN TOO MUCH WEIGHT BEING PUT ON THOSE WEAK POINTS. I AM NOW VERY SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING A NEW FRAME, WHICH IS A LOT OF MONEY... OR, AT THE VERY LEAST, A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT TO PULL A FRAME OFF OF A VEHICLE FROM A JUNKYARD, THEN PUT IT ON MY VEHICLE (OR RATHER, PUT MY VEHICLE ON IT). FRAME FAILURE COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHE OR DEATH, AND THIS FRAME IS IN VERY BAD SHAPE COMPARED TO MOST VEHICLES IT'S AGE (AND MANY THAT ARE OLDER).

TO REDUCE THE TEMPERATURE, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD TO BE DEPRESSED OR THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THERMOSTAT FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 136,000.

Negative 1999 Ford Ranger car reviews

It's disappointing to hear that the drive shaft had to be replaced twice by 23,000 miles, and that there were further issues with the transfer case and transmission at 40,000 and 80,000 miles respectively. The loud engine and clunking when shifting gears are also concerning. However, the price is certainly attractive. It may be worth considering other options, as Ford's response of 'it's normal' is not reassuring. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I had a negative experience with my Ford truck. Unfortunately, the transmission failed at 37,000 miles, just after the warranty expired, and it cost me $2,500 to repair. I purchased a new truck to avoid future expenses like this, but at 89,000 miles, I had to replace the transmission again for another $2,500. It has been difficult to save up for a replacement while shelling out large amounts of money to keep it running. I am hesitant to purchase another Ford truck. Please be aware of my experience.

Not too bad of a truck! I've only had to replace a sensor for the emissions since I bought it with 40,000 miles in Aug. 2002. However, the truck isn't great with gas mileage and could use a little more 'get up' when you step on the gas.

Hi there! I've been driving this truck since May of 2003 and have put about 25,000 miles on it. So far, it's been a reliable vehicle, with the only issue being a problem with the battery cable. However, I'm currently experiencing some creaking and squeaking in the front suspension (which I'm about to get checked out), and unfortunately, my right rear speaker has suddenly stopped working. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that my truck will continue to serve me well after these repairs are taken care of.

This truck has major transmission problems at 50000 miles. As a lifelong Ford owner, I am disappointed and would expect better from this brand. If Ford does not extend their powertrain warranty, I will consider purchasing a Toyota for my next vehicle.

I bought this vehicle with 35K miles on it and it has been pretty reliable. It has only been in the shop a couple of times. At 45K miles, the speed sensor went out and cost $350 to fix. Then, at 135K miles, the timing belt and power steering pump went out and cost $700 to fix both. Around the same time, the filler hose for the gas tank started to leak, but I was able to temporarily fix it with Gorilla tape. Unfortunately, replacing the part would cost $350 and it's hard to find at the salvage yard. There are some minor electrical issues, such as the wipers turning on by themselves and the dome lights and headlight warning sound going out, which are caused by the same switch in the door jamb. The ride can be a bit rough and it loses traction over bumps.

I recently purchased my 3rd Ranger in 15 years, a '99 XLT Extended Cab, SB from a local truck dealer with 92K miles on it. Although I love this truck, I have noticed that the 3.0 engine lacks power and the fuel economy is not great for such a small engine. However, it is built for a small truck and I have made some improvements such as adding new heavy duty leaf springs from JC Whitney which lifted the rear and fixed the load droop, as well as fixing up numerous minor wear and tear and tune up issues such as brakes, water pump, tires, plugs, shocks, etc. At 145K miles, I noticed a lifter tick which was easily solved with 2/3 quart Marvel Mystery oil. Overall, I absolutely love my truck and plan to keep it until it dies, as it holds sentimental value to me.

I purchased my truck in 2017 with 70k miles and have since driven it for three years, accumulating 115k miles. Fortunately, the previous owners were mechanics, which has proven to be a stroke of luck. I have taken it on three cross-country trips and numerous other excursions without any issues. Recently, I experienced a vacuum leak (~$550) due to my lengthy commute to work. However, with good tires and a shell/sandbags, it performs exceptionally well in snowy conditions. The cab provides ample space for all my belongings, and I can still accommodate a passenger if necessary. I am extremely satisfied with my truck and plan to continue driving it until it can no longer serve me.
