2024 Kia Niro problems

The Kia Niro (Korean: 기아 니로) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) manufactured by Kia since 2016. It is an electrification-focused vehicle, offering three versions: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric variants.
First generation (DE; 2016)
The first-generation Niro was introduced in 2016. Based on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia opted to use dual-clutch transmission instead of the more traditional continuously variable transmission found in most other hybrids to offer a more engaging driving experience.
The size is between the Stonic and Sportage, and very close to the XCeed. In Europe, the Niro was launched in a choice of seven colours and either 16- or 18-inch wheels. It was the first Kia model to feature Android Auto, available from its launch, while Apple CarPlay was made available towards the end of 2016. Seven airbags were included as standard, along with other safety features including autonomous braking, smart cruise control and lane departure warning to name a few. Noise reduction was a key development focus, with Kia achieving a quieter cabin by use of increased front structure insulation and the use of acoustic windshield glass.
Full production started in May 2016 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, South Korea, with European sales from the third quarter of 2016.
A plug-in version was launched in the United Kingdom in the end of 2017, and in the United States in the beginning of 2018, with an electric version launched in 2018. Towards the end of 2018 and start of 2019, sales of the Niro PHEV ranked highly in Denmark and Sweden in a list of top plug-in car sales.
The Niro received a facelift in 2019 which included changes to the front and rear bumpers, as well as new headlights and color choices. Unlike the prototypes, no production version was ever offered with four wheel drive.

Common 2024 Kia Niro problems
The 2024 Kia Niro is expected to be more reliable than the average new car. However, there are some common problems that owners of the 2024 Kia Niro have reported, primarily related to the hybrid system and software issues.
One of the most significant problems reported by owners is related to the hybrid system. In some cases, the hybrid system has been known to fail, causing the car to become stuck and unable to shift into reverse or drive. This issue has been attributed to a software problem, and the RAC has suggested that a dealer-installed software patch can fix it. However, the problem is frustrating for owners, as it can be difficult to replicate and may require a lengthy wait for roadside assistance.
In addition to the hybrid system issues, some owners have reported software faults in the hybrid system and tyre pressure monitor. These issues can cause warning messages to appear on the dashboard, requiring the car to be taken to the dealership for a check-up. However, in some cases, the messages may disappear on their own, making it difficult to diagnose the problem.
Another issue that has been reported by owners is related to the engine fire problem that has affected some Kia Niro models from previous years.
In summary, while the 2024 Kia Niro is expected to be more reliable than the average new car, some owners have reported issues related to the hybrid system and software faults. These issues can be frustrating and may require lengthy waits for roadside assistance or dealership visits. Additionally, some owners have expressed concern about the engine fire problem that affected previous models, although the 2024 Kia Niro is not affected by the recall.
Are there any problems with Kia Niro?
Earlier this year, Kia issued a recall for Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid (Kia Niro PHEV) models due to a potential short circuit that could result in engine fires, as announced by the NHTSA on Monday.
What are the disadvantages of the Kia Niro?
While the Niro's electric efficiency and stylish design are definite advantages, there are also some drawbacks to consider, such as slow charging speed, limited cargo space, and a less powerful engine than some of its competitors.
Are Kia Niro reliable cars?
The Kia Niro came first out of 12 cars in our rundown of the most reliable used electric and hybrid cars in 2023. Not only did it top the table with a 100% score, but not a single owner reported a fault with their car.
Is Kia Niro good choice?
Road manners are agreeable—if somewhat forgettable—but the Niro feels right at home in urban environments, nailing its mission and earning itself a 2024 Editors' Choice award. If you're looking to go all-electric, Kia also sells a Niro EV; we review that model separately.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- VIN: KNDCT3L10R5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Emergency stop blocked by a piece of the bottom dash panel under the steering column. There are castings in the underside of the panel covering the steering column that prevent the right foot of a driver with a larger foot/shoe to operate the brake pedal. I have a size 11 shoe and my foot catches on this plastic casting and interferes with the brake operation. Last night a car pulled out of a parking spot in front of me and the protuberance block my foot from applying the brakes. This has happened multiple times and I am forced to drive without my right shoe for safety sake !
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
- VIN: KNDCT3L12R5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I picked up this car on 12/30/2023. On 1/10/2024, I noticed that the power folding side mirrors were folding slower than normal. On 1/13/2024, I went into the Kia Access app and was greeted by an error message stating that remote commands could not be sent as the battery was under 40%, however the app showed the battery at 80%. On 1/14/2024, I discovered the app was referencing the 12-volt battery, as the car's power mirrors and locks did not function. I needed the car to get to a relative's house to figure out a furnace issue, so the timing could not have been worse. I had a tow set up and the driver advised the 12-volt battery had 3 volts of charge. The driver jumped started the car and it went up to 14 volts once the car was on. Once the car was off, the battery dropped down to 9 volts. On 1/15/2024, the car dealership started to look into the car but could not be due to technical issues with their technical assistance system with Kia Corporate. The dealer-installed locator was removed and there still is a draw on the battery when the car is off. On 1/18/2024, the car dealership called me to ask if I had any third-party apps or Kia Connect. I advised I am not aware of any, however if that was the cause of the battery drain, there is most certainly a design flaw with the battery management system in the car and the car should turn off those features to protect the battery should it get low enough. On 1/23/2024, the car dealership advised that the 12-volt battery was replaced, however they are seeing a draw on the battery. The dealership asked me to unregister my car with Kia Connect. I did so, but re-iterated that if this fixes the issue, there is definitely a design flaw with the battery management system in the car and there should be a software fix made. A simple Google search or NHTSA search for any of Kia's/Hyundai's EVs with dead 12-volt batteries show many users with similar issues. I urge the NHTSA to look into this issue across Kia's/Hyundai's EV lineup.

I previously owned the 2018 Niro LX and drove it for 100K miles without any issues besides regular oil changes. As a rideshare driver, I put on about 1,000 miles per week and decided to trade it in for the new model. Overall, I give it 5 stars because any complaints I have are minor. For those interested in buying one, here are some of the great features: I typically keep mine in eco mode with regenerative braking at normal and get around 60mpg, sometimes even up to 64 depending on where I'm driving. The safety features are a major upgrade from the old model, including blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a better backup camera. The upgraded suspension and sound deadening make for a smoother ride, and the larger back area can hold more suitcases. The dash looks amazing and always gets compliments. The charging ports on the sides of the front seats are also a great addition. The only minor issues I have are with the auto steering on the freeways, which I turned off, and the lane departure warning, which beeps too much for my liking.I had a frustrating experience with dealers who were advertising a car for $5K over MSRP due to inflation and labor costs. However, I was able to negotiate and get the car I wanted for a fair price. Although I didn't need all the features that came with the higher trim, the dealer was willing to work with me and give me a good deal. The intermittent wipers feature could use some improvement, as it doesn't always work properly. I would prefer a dial to control the speed. Additionally, the knob that controls the volume/temperature is a bit small and can be difficult to use without accidentally pressing other buttons. Overall, I think the car could benefit from some upgrades, especially in terms of the radio power on the stock unit. I recently added an underseat sub to my car to enhance the audio experience, but I noticed that the unit needs its own amp to be turned up loud enough to hear over the road noise. Since I drive rideshare, I don't play music too loudly anyway, but having a 50-watt per channel boost would definitely help. As for the sideblade thing, it's just a design choice that doesn't really affect wind resistance or mpg. Most of the ones I've seen for sale already have the panel in the body color, and it only comes in gray or black anyway. It's not really functional and just ends up being a place for debris to get stuck in. The EX model comes with a glossy black interior which looks sleek but shows dust and fingerprints easily. I personally prefer the matte surface of the LX model, which also has a larger screen. However, the LX has fake leather seats which may not be as durable as cloth. My biggest complaint about the car is its lack of power. Compared to our Camry hybrid, it's much slower and louder when going up hills. It struggles to get out of second gear and sounds like a semi truck when it gets close to 3,000 RPM. It just doesn't have the power needed to easily merge onto the freeway.I understand that it may seem like I am complaining, but I want to assure you that I am actually very satisfied with my car. In fact, I am even considering purchasing a third one in the future. Of course, if the Seltos becomes hybrid or if another AWD hybrid becomes more affordable, I may consider those options as well. I will have to see what is available in a couple of years.

So, it's been two weeks today since I got it on 5/14/23 and I'm already getting 100 mpg! It takes some getting used to the regenerative brakes that charge the battery, but I absolutely love the mileage. The inside is spacious and state of the art! This was definitely the best decision we've made lately.

We first leased an SX Touring, mineral blue with a black aero-blade. A lot of folks complement us on the vehicle. It’s got virtually everything I want in a vehicle: auto cruise control, all other driving safety features, power lift gate, memory seats, heated steering wheel, heated/ventilated seats, and much more. We are getting almost 50 mpg—wow! Liking it so much, I traded in my 2020 Honda CTV Touring Hybrid (averaging 39.3 mpg) for an SX model. It’s virtually the same as the Touring with what’s important to me. Averaging 52.6 mpg—double wow!! I bought this one and, more than likely, will buy the Touring, too.

I'm so glad to hear that you love the safety features!

I purchased the 2023 Niro Ex in October of 2022 and initially, it was a great car, especially in terms of fuel efficiency. However, after only 14,000 miles and less than a year of ownership, the car broke down while parked in my garage due to a dead hybrid battery. Despite attempting to reset the 12v battery, roadside assistance was required to jump-start the vehicle after a four-hour wait. The car was then towed to a Kia dealer, where it has been sitting for a few days. Unfortunately, the dealer has been unable to identify the issue, and I have not been provided with a loaner car. This experience has led me to question the reliability of the vehicle, given that it broke down so quickly.

* The car drives really well and has a lot of interesting tech features. However, I have noticed that the USB port doesn't work consistently, even after trying different cables. This can be frustrating, especially since Apple Carplay disconnects at random due to the USB issue, making navigation and entertainment unavailable. *
