2004 Ford Escape problems

ford logo

The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).

Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-11
  • VIN: 1FMYU93114K
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The body panel around the rear driver side shock mount has almost completely rusted away. Driving one day, I started to hear a loud clunking noise from the rear driver side. It started to get louder the more I drove it. Upon inspection, I found the body panel had completely rusted around the shock mount tower, which is only now connected to the rear floor panel. Without the support of the rest of the body panel, the metal is slowing ripping away where it is connected to the floor if it is driven. The vehicle is completely unsafe to drive now as the rear shock could rip away from the vehicle at any moment. There have been many complaints of this happening on the rear passenger side, which I also had on this vehicle. Roughly 5 years ago, I had an independent auto body shop repair rust on the passenger side shock mount/body panel where it had rusted through. I noticed a hole in the body panel when changing the rear shocks, but it was not large enough or bad enough at that point to create a safety issue. So, I had time to safety get it to an auto body shop for repair before it got bad. This same issue has now happened on the driver side and I am left with a car that is unsafe to drive. When the other side was repaired, there was no sign of rust or concern on the other side. So, it has completely rusted through in that 5-year time frame. I inquired about repairing this with an auto body shop, and I was told that the rust is too significant to repair safely and cost effectively. It would require extensive metal repair on the body and frame underneath it. This absolutely could have put myself, my passengers, and other drivers at risk if the rear shock and mount had unexpectedly ripped away from the body of the vehicle. It could have ripped through the rear body of the car or come in contact with the rear wheel while driving, causing a significant risk of losing control of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
  • VIN: 1FMYU03154K
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: There seems to be a wiring grounding problem. I have had to replace multiple alternators over the length of time that I've had this vehicle. Whenever I have to use my windshield wipers during mid to heavy rain, along with lights, and heat/ac. The next day my alternator doesn't respond properly and generally will not run. After checking batteries, replacing batteries, blown fuses, I still end up having to get a new alternator. Which last until I back in the same situation. This car has completely shutoff while driving on the interstate and in traffic. The cigarette lighters do not work properly either; therefore I'm not able to charge my phone or use navigation systems.

I did some research and found that the recall on the sub frame existed. however my local dealership denied that this recall existed for my vehicle. I was able to get the majority of the parts installed but there is issues with the threads inside the subframe that the hardware attaching the suspension components to the vehicle. I am reading that the "fix" for this recall is installing a support brace but do not fee that is an acceptable repair as the wheels may literally fall off of the car taking the front suspension with them as they go.

2004 Ford Escape recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2004 Ford Escape.

2015-09-29
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
  • Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.

Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Negative 2004 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Ryan Fadel 2025-01-07

My mom purchased this SUV in October 2012, and I have been driving it daily since September 2014. It had 113,000 miles on it and came with almost all maintenance reports, indicating that it was very well maintained. During the first year of ownership, it handled very well, rode very nicely, had a lot of power, and got good gas mileage (25 MPG combined). After about 13 months, it started having some normal issues, such as needing tie rods, tires, and spark plugs. However, some unexpected issues also arose, such as vacuum leaks, exhaust falling off the car, and needing a seal on the transfer case replaced. Unfortunately, the car died in September 2014, and I have been driving the Escape almost daily since then. In that time, it has needed struts as well as two new tires, which are normal things to wear on a car. However, it has also needed some not-so-normal repairs, such as a power steering pump replacement (twice), new brake lines, new front calipers, a new master cylinder, more vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, ball joints, and a wheel bearing. Currently, the car has 153,954 miles on it and is experiencing an extremely rough idle, a plastic melting smell that will literally burn your eyes, and stalling. While I suspect it's a vacuum leak, my mom thinks the engine is blown. Regardless, we have decided not to sink any more money into it, as the transmission was also on its way out.

I purchased the Escape brand new. Unfortunately, it broke down just two weeks later and required repairs. Additionally, there were two recalls within the first two months of ownership. Despite our gentle use of the vehicle, we have experienced issues with the transmission and brake system. It is important to note that the vehicle has only been driven 23,000 miles in the four years since we purchased it.

  3. Bennie Daugherty 2024-11-18

I purchased this vehicle as a dealer's demo with 4,000 miles and it performed well mechanically. However, I did need to replace the tires at 32,000 miles. Unfortunately, the ride was quite noisy due to wind and road noise. Additionally, after 30,000 miles, the ride became very rough and the truck had difficulty on bumpy roads. Recently, I purchased a Kia Sportage for my wife and it far surpasses the Escape in terms of comfort, ride, and standard features, despite the Escape having a more powerful engine. There may be better options available in this price range.

  4. Cristobal Boyer 2024-06-13

I leased my 2004 Escape brand new from a dealer where I worked. All service work required on the SUV was performed. I really appreciate the fact that I could get to work in bad weather and feel totally comfortable driving my Escape in the snow. As someone who takes care of my cars, doesn't off road, and drives carefully, I was disappointed to learn that the transmissions in the Escape only last 50,000 miles. If I had known this, I may have reconsidered my lease vehicle.

  5. Gay Rau 2024-04-27

Although the transmission of my Escape failed just 6 months after purchase, I was able to negotiate with the dealership and only paid $500 for the repair. While it was an unexpected expense, I have been very satisfied with the vehicle's performance since then.

Positive 2004 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Alexie Ferry 2025-01-02

Hi there! I bought my Escape for convenience since my kids got their own cars and I didn't need a van anymore. I wanted to downsize my car and found this Escape, which was a one-owner and seldom driven. It has been very dependable and has never failed to start or take me where I need to go, whether on the highway or in a hay field! It's also good on gas, getting 24 mpg on the highway and a little less in the city. Overall, it was a great buy for me! The only issue I've had is that the sunroof sometimes hesitates to open or close. Thanks for reading!

  2. Isaias Jacobs 2024-11-18

I moved up from a Suzuki Side Kick. I'm absolutely loving my Ford Escape! It's so easy to drive and has great acceleration. My husband has a Ford F150 4x4 and he enjoys driving my 'Scape too. Additionally, the Escape gets very good gas mileage.

  3. Andre Hand 2024-11-15

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed your 2001 Jeep for a whole decade! It sounds like you found a great replacement in the 2004 Escape. It's unfortunate that newer Jeeps don't live up to the standards of the older models, but it's great that you were able to find a vehicle that met your needs. The 2004 Escape seems like a great choice, especially with its solid build and low mileage. It's wonderful that the previous owner took such good care of it, and it's even better that you were able to get it at such a great price! Congratulations on your new ride!

  4. Karl Carroll 2024-11-12

I'm happy to report that I haven't had any maintenance issues in the past 6 years! Toyota has certainly exceeded my expectations.

  5. Harrison Aufderhar 2024-09-15

My car has just hit 50,000 miles and it is still running great! Despite some minor issues such as quick brake wear and poor traction in rainy weather, I have had a positive experience with both this car and my previous 04 Mazda Tribute. The engine still sounds as strong as it did when it was new and everything is in great condition. Although some features such as the console and glove box may seem a little cheap, overall the car is of good quality. While some people complain about the gas mileage, it is important to note that it does not match the window sticker. However, I am confident in the car's performance and reliability.
