Common 2017 Fiat 500x problems

The Fiat 500X, a compact SUV produced by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, has faced a number of common problems reported by owners of the 2017 model. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the engine, electrical system, transmission, exterior accessories, brakes, and daytime lights.

  • Electrical Problems: Several complaints have been filed regarding continuous electrical issues during ownership of the 2017 Fiat 500X. • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues have been reported in the 2017 Fiat 500X, with some owners experiencing complete transmission failure. Additionally, reverse synchronizer failure has been mentioned, with one owner reporting that the issue occurred at just 15,000 miles. These problems can impact the drivability and safety of the vehicle, as well as potentially lead to high repair costs.
  • Exterior Accessory Problems: The most common exterior accessory failure in the 2017 Fiat 500X is the driver's door handle, which has been known to fall off with use. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-11
  • VIN: ZFBCFXCB1HP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS ABRUPTLY SHUT OFF ON MY TWICE NOW. THE FIRST TIME, I HAD JUST MADE A TURN FROM A BUSY INTERSECTION NEAR MY HOME WHEN THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. THOUGH THE CAR STOPPED MOVING, NONE OF THE ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS OF WOULD SHUT OFF. I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TO MAKE IT SHUT OFF. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE CAR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, AND THEY RETURNED THE CAR TO ME, DOING NOTHING BECAUSE THE ISSUE DIDN'T HAPPEN WHEN THEY STARTED THE CAR A DAY LATER. FAST FORWARD SEVERAL WEEKS, THE CAR STOPPED -- THIS TIME ON THE FINAL SPACE OF A BRIDGE. BY THE GRACE OF GOD, WE COASTED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BRIDGE WHERE THE CAR STOPPED COMPLETELY. AGAIN, THE CAR WOULDN'T SHUT OFF, BUT IT JUST DIDN'T MOVE. I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. THIS TIME, I LEFT THE CAR WHERE IT WAS, AND I RETURNED TO PICK UP THE CAR 24 HOURS LATER. THE CAR STARTED AND RAN JUST FINE. I THEN HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I WAS FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING IT. THEY HAVE KEPT THE CAR FOR FOUR DAYS, AND THEY CALLED ME TO SAY THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT. BECAUSE THERE'S AN OUTSTANDING RECALL (AND, COINCIDENTALLY, AN ENSUING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT) ON THE CAR, THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD INITIATE THE RECALL ACTION. THIS IS TWO PART ACTION -- I BELIEVE -- BECAUSE FIAT HAS NO INTENTIONS OF PAYING FOR THESE REPAIRS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CAR, BUT THE MECHANIC DID INDICATE THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE MANIFESTS ITSELF IN THE WAYS I HAVE DESCRIBED. SO I HAVE TO KEEP MY CAR FOR 1,500 TO 1,700 MILES AND THEN ONLY RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP IF I BELIEVE IT'S THE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. I'M NOT SURE HOW I'M SUPPOSED TO DETERMINE THAT. ADDITIONALLY, BECAUSE WE'RE IN A PANDEMIC, AND I WFH, IT WILL TAKE ME TEN+ MONTHS TO ACCRUE THAT MANY DRIVE MILES.

TWO WEEKS LATER WHILE WASHING MY CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME, I NOTICED SOME CLOUDY SPOTS ON THE CAR'S EXTERIOR PAINT (3 SPOTS) AND WHAT APPEARED TO BE A BURN SPOT ON THE LEFT PASSENGER DOOR. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE THAT NEEDED TO BE HANDLED BY FIAT. THEY TOOK PICTURES AND WERE SUPPOSED TO CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENT AT FIAT TO HANDLE MY CASE. AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF NO ACTIVITY, I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AT FIAT DIRECTLY AND HAD THEM OPEN A CASE FOR ME. THE CASE AGENT COORDINATED WITH THE DEALERSHIP TO SEND THE PICTURES TO THE APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENT AT FIAT, AN INSPECTOR CAME OUT TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT IN FACT, MY CAR'S PAINT HAD A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. THIS WAS DETERMINED BACK IN APRIL AND FIAT HAS FAILED TO RESOLVE MY CASE. I HAVE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES AND HAVE BEEN LIED TO REPEATEDLY THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE IN TOUCH WITH ME TO EITHER REPLACE MY VEHICLE OR HAVE ME TURN IN THE VEHICLE FOR A FULL REFUND. IT HAS BEEN 10 MONTHS SINCE I ALERTED FIAT OF THE ISSUE AND THEY REFUSE TO RESOLVE MY CASE.

Negative 2017 Fiat 500x car reviews

  1. Emerald Luettgen 2025-01-11

I named my Fiat 500x Bambino and it's been a great drive! The acceleration, especially in sport mode, is awesome and the shifting is smooth. However, during the summers, the a/c vents are few and the circulation is poor, making it a bit uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with my car breaking down three times in the last three years, which is a shame. I'm currently searching for a new vehicle. It's important to be careful when driving in heavy rains as it may cause some issues. Overall, I've had a good experience with my Fiat 500x, but it's time for me to move on to something new.

  2. Junius Hodkiewicz 2025-01-09

I bought my Fiat 500X Trek a few weeks ago and unfortunately experienced a breakdown during my drive home from the dealer. It shut off at 40 mph and was difficult to start afterwards. I followed my salesperson's advice and took it to the service department the next day, with the engine light on for the entire trip. The service tech explained that the computer was reading fault codes and self-correcting as it learns. Although this conclusion made me uneasy, I trusted my service manager's advice and left with instructions to return if any further problems arose. Later that day, I stopped for a soda and when I attempted to restart my vehicle, it wouldn't start. After several attempts, I called the service department back to report my problem, but was only able to leave a message. After waiting 20 minutes for their call back, I was able to start the motor successfully, but the engine light remained on and the car seemed to be running out of tune with little power. The service department finally returned my call and instructed me to return the vehicle again, which I did the very next day and was awarded a rental car. After about 8 days, I was advised that my Fiat had a new onboard body computer module installed and that it was fine and ready for pick up. I finally made my first successful trip home with this car. However, the very next day, the vehicle became difficult to start and remained in 3rd gear at all times, with the engine light on. So, again, I called the service department and was advised to have the vehicle towed, which I did with the assistance of the Fiat Roadside Assistance and a local towing service, and was awarded another rental vehicle. After several days, I was advised that there was a loose/corroded ground wire on the side of my transmission, which was repaired, and my vehicle was ready for pick up.I had a few issues with my vehicle in the past, but thankfully everything has been resolved. Although there were some unexpected shutdowns while driving, the service department was able to fix the problem. The staff were very helpful and did their best to assist me during the process. I'm happy to say that my new Fiat has been running smoothly for a couple of years now, with only minor issues such as the trim coming off. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experience and would recommend this line of cars to others.Leaving a very sticky substance underneath that seems to get on everything can be very annoying and make things look ugly. However, it starts and goes. I wouldn't purchase another one though. Good luck!

  3. Regan Olson 2024-11-15

I bought my first car, a Fiat 500x, on October 26th, 2015. Unfortunately, the very next day, the car stalled and began smoking. The Electric E-Brake turned on, making it impossible to move the car from the street. To make matters worse, the steering wheel completely locked up, even though the car had only 81 miles on it. It took two hours for the tow truck to arrive and remove the car. The dealer it was sent to took two days to get back to me, which was past the 48-hour return policy. They informed me that a rod had shot through the engine, and that they needed to order a new engine for my new car. It took two weeks for the engine to arrive, and another week to have it put in. After the engine was installed, they tested the car and found that a new fuse and starter were needed. It took a week and a half to receive and install these parts. Finally, they tested the car again and found that a new air intake valve was needed. This added a little less than a full week to my already 4 weeks and 3 days in the shop for a problem that a new car should not be having. Finally, on December 4th, 2015, I received a call that my car was ready to be picked up. When I arrived at the dealership, the employees at the service center expressed their gratitude for my patience and understanding throughout the entire process. Although I had to call the dealership multiple times for updates, the woman I was dealing with was always polite and helpful. The dealership even called me a few times to check on the car after I received it. While I did have some frustrations with the company, I appreciate the efforts made by the dealership to make things right. I would recommend them to others.

Firstly, I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your car. It sounds like you have had a difficult time with it. From what you have described, it seems like there have been a few recalls on the car since you purchased it. I can understand how frustrating this must be for you, especially with the safety concerns you have mentioned. Additionally, it is unfortunate that the tires blew out after only four months and that there was no spare in the car. I can imagine how inconvenient that must have been for you. Regarding the oil leak, it is concerning that the levels were low after a recent oil change. I hope that the dealership can determine the cause of this issue and resolve it for you. It is also unfortunate that you have had trouble with the keyless remote and the gas mileage has not met your expectations. I hope that Fiat can address these issues and provide a satisfactory resolution for you. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention, and we will do our best to assist you in resolving these issues.

At 24113 miles and less than 2 years old, my vehicle began stalling after displaying numerous different warning lights. Unfortunately, over the course of 7 months, I was left stranded 11 times after stalling on the expressway and in town. Despite the dealership replacing a total of 5 new parts and returning it to me 'fixed', the issue persisted. Although I had a warranty for 5 years and had even extended it, I didn't want to trade my vehicle. I simply wanted FIAT to fix it. However, they refused to buy it back, give me a comparable vehicle, or acknowledge that it was a lemon and they couldn't figure out the problem. I had to trade it in and take a financial loss as I couldn't continue to put my family in harm's way. Unfortunately, my experience with FCA staff was not helpful and my entire experience with FIAT was horrible. However, I must say that the local dealership did as Chrysler/Fiat directed them and they actually stepped up to offer more on a trade than usual and took the vehicle 'as-is', which was still not repaired. Although I will never purchase another FIAT or recommend it to others, I appreciate the effort made by the local dealership.

Positive 2017 Fiat 500x car reviews

  1. Michel Goodwin 2025-08-21

After owning my 500x Trekking Plus for over a year now, I can confidently say that I love it even more. It has served us well, and we've gone on several road trips and even started a new business with it (Online Antiques and a booth in Vero Beach). Fiat is a great value, and it gets a bad rap due to its connection to Mopar. However, in my year of owning the car, the only thing that failed was a Chrysler-sourced MOPAR design fan assembly that Fiat (FCA) took care of immediately. My experience with the dealer's customer service was above par, and FCA was great. They told me it was imperative to get the car back into the dealer, and they had the car for three weeks (due to parts delay), but they rented another car for me, and I paid nothing. So, my Fiat has been 100% reliable, except for the American part that failed. But she is back running better than ever, and I have no complaints. Due to an unknown injury, I came down with severe sciatica in my left leg and hip. My doctor said it was probably exacerbated by twisting in and out of my low-to-the-ground 2013 Mazda MX5. So, I was on the hunt for something that was easy to get into. By far, and I have owned 25 cars now in my lifetime as a 55-year-old man, the Fiat 500 X is the most comfortable car I have ever driven. Plus, even after having Mercedes and BMWs, I find its electronics, infotainment system, and build quality superior. Fiat is right up there with Mazda in their top-of-the-line cars, giving consumers the most bang for the buck you can possibly get for under 30,000. Even a basic Fiat comes with creature comforts that you don't see in other cars, like fully automatic headlamps. Such a minor thing, but a nicety nonetheless. My Fiat 500 X Trekking Plus is top-of-the-line and is only missing one option, the all-wheel-drive feature. Unfortunately, it's next to impossible to get in Florida for some reason, and none of the dealers are ordering it. But never mind, my car comforts me with the heated seats, leather, cornering lamps (which are amazing, like personal luxury cars of yesteryear), dual pane panoramic sunroof, Beats stereo, navigation, back up cam, crash sonar...omg the list goes on! It's going to take me probably two weeks to figure out how to operate every single feature this car has. And with all the geegaws comes a glass smooth ride with none of that herky-jerky transmission stuff that other people talk about, and the solid feel that you get when you shut a BMW door...that wonderful muffled thunk. Plus, my dealer extends the warranty to 10 years 100,000 miles! I think that Fiat is undervalued, and this car is a game changer for the Fiat brand in America. I want to address some of the bad reviews this car gets. In reading them, I find the people who write negative comments about the car's transmission, hesitation, etc. are probably bad drivers or have expectations that could not be met by a crossover. In owning my car and having driven several others in its class, the Fiat 500x offers the best value. For instance, the 500x Trekking Plus has a power seat, the Mazda CX3 doesn't. It's not available. The CX3 gets praise from auto journalists, but it's based on the old Mazda 2 which was a dog and sold poorly. So much for objectivity, the Mazda 2 has been dropped. Also, to write a review based on simply driving a rental should not be allowed! Rental cars get beat to Hades and back. The 500x takes getting used to. I had to learn how the electric parking brake works; it's not the most intuitive thing. But the 500x truly is a fun, well-built rig.

  2. Omer Schmeler 2025-08-11

We've only had our 500X AWD for a month, but we're already impressed with how well it handles the curves in the mountains of NC/TN. The AWD system also seems to handle the rain better than our FWD Corolla. Some reviews mention issues with shifting, but we found that switching to 'sport' mode provides more responsive shifting when needed. The front seats aren't the most comfortable, but for a compact SUV, they're manageable. Our only real complaint is with the factory navigation system - we've had trouble finding an update for it online. While Google Maps is up to date, we'd prefer to use the factory hands-free system. We're looking forward to seeing how the AWD holds up this fall and winter.

  3. Haley Renner 2025-08-10

I've owned my 500X Lounge for 7 years and have just over 58,000 miles, and I couldn't be happier! I absolutely love driving this car! The car has been incredibly reliable, and the only repair I needed was to replace the radiator, which was covered under my extended warranty. FIAT has been excellent about addressing any issues with a few recalls over the years. One of the few complaints I had about the car was that there was excessive vibration at idle, so FIAT issued a TSB where the motor mounts could be replaced at no cost. I went to my dealership, Bill Luke FIAT, and they replaced it without question. Since then, the car feels like a completely different vehicle. The car starts smoother, and all the vibration is gone. Other than that, the only low points are that fuel economy is just okay, while the car is by no means fast, and the transmission is slow to downshift. Cargo space is limited with its sloped back design, and the ride can get a little bouncy. However, the high points are much more. The car drives very nicely and has a great feel to it. You feel well connected to the car and to the road. The car is smooth, quiet, and handles well, but all that improved significantly more when I replaced my factory Nexen tires with Pirelli Cinturato P7s. The seats are really comfortable and help alleviate my back pain. The driving position is just right. The car has a lot of features, and they all work well, and the materials and build quality have exceeded my expectations. My dealer, Bill Luke FIAT, has been fantastic! I would strongly encourage anyone to buy one of these.

  4. Marlon Lueilwitz 2025-08-08

I had a great time driving the Fiat 500X during my recent trip, even though I also tried my friend's Mazda 3 (which was also a rental) during the same period. I really enjoyed the free-revving engine, confidence-inspiring handling, and steering. The only downsides were the expected lack of interior space and a slightly jerky transmission at times on some modes. I also shot a video during the trip, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ8pY-3twms. Of course, my reliability rating is based solely on my rental period, but the car was almost like new with only a few scratches both inside and out (unlike a regular Fiat 500 I rented some time back, which had a broken seat folding lever and a couple of loose parts at around 45000 miles).

After test driving all the cars in this class, I found that nothing compared to the 500X. It's an excellent quality car, great value for money, and it fits me like a glove. I read some reviews that mentioned it being cramped and some complaints about the way it shifts, but as someone who is only 5 feet tall, I have no issues with the room. The power delivery is very smooth and more than enough for this class of car. It's very comfortable both in town and on the freeway. I'm not worried about reliability either, as I also own a 500C and have never had any issues with it. While Fiat may not be the most popular brand, I love driving something unique that I don't see everywhere I go. Plus, I'm getting great mileage to boot! :)
