2013 Lexus Es350 problems
The Lexus ES (Japanese: レクサス・ES, Hepburn: Rekusasu ES) is a series of mid-size executive cars marketed since 1989 by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, across multiple generations, each offering V6 engines and a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The first five generations of the ES used the Toyota Camry platform, while the latter generations are more closely related to both the Camry and the Avalon. Manual transmissions were offered until 1993, a lower-displacement inline-four engine became an option in Asian markets in 2010, and a gasoline-electric hybrid version was introduced in 2012. The ES was Lexus's only front-wheel drive vehicle until 1998, when the related RX was introduced, and the sedan occupied the entry-level luxury car segment of the Lexus lineup in North America and other regions until the debut of the IS in 1999. The ES name stands for "Executive Sedan". However, some Lexus importers use the name, "Elegant Sedan".
Introduced in 1989, the first generation ES 250 was one of two vehicles in Lexus's debut range, along with the LS 400. The second generation ES 300 debuted in 1991, followed by the third generation ES 300 in 1996, and the fourth generation ES 300/330 in 2001. The first- through fourth generation sedans shared body styling elements with Japan-market Toyota sedans, and a domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Windom (Japanese: トヨタ・ウィンダム, Toyota Windamu), was sold until the launch of the fifth generation ES in 2006. The word "Windom" is a combination of "win" and the suffix "dom" expresses a state of perpetual victory. The fifth generation ES used body styling marketed by Lexus as L-finesse and debuted in early 2006 as a 2007 model. The sixth generation ES debuted in the first half of 2012 as a 2013 model, and features increased cabin dimensions due to a longer wheelbase which is shared with the full-size XX40 series Avalon.
Lexus has positioned the ES in the comfort luxury segment, with an emphasis on interior amenities, quietness, and ride quality, in contrast with more firm-riding sport sedans. Buyers seeking more performance-focused models are targeted by the Lexus IS and rival makes, with such models offering a sportier drive with differently tuned suspensions. In Europe, Japan and other markets where it was not available until the seventh generation model, the GS sport sedans occupy the mid-size category in the Lexus lineup until it was cancelled August 2020. In the United States, the ES has been the best-selling Lexus sedan for over fifteen years.

Common 2013 Lexus Es350 problems
The Lexus ES350 is a popular luxury sedan known for its reliability and exceptional performance. However, like any vehicle, it has some common issues that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most common problems with the Lexus ES350, particularly the 2013 model, based on complaints from owners:
- GPS Failures: The GPS system in the 2013 Lexus ES350 has reportedly had some issues, although they are less common than the melting dashboard problem. Early releases of the ES350 had more significant GPS problems, but later models, including the 2013 model, have experienced fewer issues.
- Oil Leaks: The 2013 Lexus ES350 has reported cases of excessive or sudden oil leaks, especially in earlier models. However, more recent models, including the 2013 model, have lower rates of oil leaks and oil consumption issues.
- Miscellaneous Engine Problems: The 2013 Lexus ES350 has experienced various engine issues, including gasket and seal problems, ticking and knocking sounds, and other signs of internal engine issues. These problems can range in severity and cause, with some not making a significant impact on consumers, while others require immediate and costly repairs.
- Windows Opening On Their Own: The 2013 Lexus ES350, particularly in the early years, has experienced issues with windows and moonroofs opening on their own. While this issue can be a safety risk depending on outdoor temperatures, driving conditions, and how startled drivers are when the windows open, most of the time, the windows and moonroof can still be closed even after opening accidentally.
It's important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners, they are not necessarily common in the 2013 Lexus ES350. The ES350 is still known for its reliability and exceptional performance, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle.
What is the common problem in Lexus ES 350?
Oil Leaks. The Lexus ES 350 also has some reports of excessive or sudden oil leaks, especially in the earlier models. More recent models don't seem to have as many problems, but unfortunately, oil leaks and oil consumption are only some of the issues with the ES 350's engine.
How many miles can a 2013 Lexus ES 350 last?
between 220,000 and 250,000 miles
The burning question for potential buyers, whether considering a new or used Lexus ES 350, is how many miles this vehicle can go. On average, a Lexus ES 350 can last between 220,000 and 250,000 miles. But how does this compare to its competitors?

- Summary: Roughly 6-12 months ago the dashboard on my Lexus started to melt and become sticky, creating a glare on my windshield and impeding my ability to see the road causing dangerous situations. Both daytime and nighttime driving have been affected by this defect. I’ve contacted the local dealership, but they confirmed that no recalls are available and that the only solution is for me to replace the entire dash.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-08
- VIN: JTHBW1GG5D2
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 2013 Lexus Es300h driving on [XXX] , I felt the brake didn't work during the street. It's hard to push the brake, and I almost hit the car in front. OMG, I was very scared. I saw an ABS brake light, and I tried to turn into a parking lot and find the nearest Pepboys in Birmingham, Alabama to inspect the system. I was informed of a problem with the Brake Booster Assembly. I’m sorry I can’t afford to pay the labor, service and parts at this time. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-16
- VIN: JTHBW1GG5D2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving down the highway coming up on a traffic jam put on the brakes and several warning. Lights came on the dash and my power brakes failed. I was barely able to stop the car without hitting someone. From that point forward the brakes did not work properly, the regenerative braking system did not function. also, the cruise control stopped functioning. I took the car to the Lexus dealer, they tested the car and stated it need a new brake booster brake assembly and that there was a safety warranty issue that was extended out 10 years and up to 150,000 miles and although my car only had 79,000 miles on it was three months past the warranty date and the refused. They reset the car brakes apparently and I was able to drive the car for several days while I spoke with Lexus, and then the car brakes failed again.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
- VIN: JTHBK1GG8D2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: On my 2013 Lexus ES 350, three out of the four doors do not function properly and will not lock or lock with the key fob. my driver’s side front door, my driver’s side rear door, and my passenger’s side front door does not work. The doors also will not lock or unlock with the interior lock/unlock button. When the all the doors are locked, I must go to the passenger’s rear door to unlock the driver’s side front door with my cane. The manual door lock from the key fob does not work and will break if I continue turning it. The door locks will not automatically lock when the car goes in motion. These are safety issues trying to get a child or pet out of the car in case of an emergency such as a fire, an accident, or robbery. The power locks are extremely helpful for me. I am a combat disabled veteran who runs the risk of reinjuring myself using the only door that works attempting to open the door with my cane. I have had some of these power locks replaced before. Lexus says this is a mechanical issue associated with the actuators rather than a safety issue. I really believe this is a serious safety and security issue rather than a mechanical issue.

Initially I had no idea what it was but realized subsequently that I was shedding glass shards behind me. There were no overpasses where someone could have dropped something, I did not see a rock or other projectile, and - when I parked the car - I found nothing that from outside seemed to have struck it and/or stayed behind in the cavity.

- Summary: MY 2013 LEXUS ES 300H HAS GOT A WEAK BRAKES, SOMETIMES WOULD MAKE SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN YOU HOLD THEM AND FEW TIMES WOULDN'T BRAKE WHEN BRAKING ON A BIT ROUGH ROAD. I WAS AFRAID FOR MY SAFETY AND WENT TO LEXUS DEALER TO PERFORM DIAGNOSTIC. THEY SAID THAT MY CAR NEEDS A BRAKE ACTUATOR TO BE REPLACED WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE PROCEDURE. HOWEVER, PEOPLE IN A DEALERSHIP ADMITTED THAT IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THESE CARS AND MY RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET CONFIRMED IT AS WELL. ALSO, LEXUS ISSUED EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR AN ABS FAILURE BUT SOMEHOW YOU ARE QUALIFIED ONLY WHEN YOUR ABS FAIL. THAT'S SOUNDS VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE. I DID MORE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT IN 2016 IN AUSTRALIA LEXUS HAS RECALLED 2013 AND ABOVE LEXUS ES MODELS BECAUSE OF BRAKE ACTUATOR AND ABS MODULE MALFUNCTION. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY ARE THE SAME MODELS NOT BEING RECALLED IN USA FOR THE SAME VERY COMMON PROBLEM.

PANICKED, I LOOKED AROUND IMMEDIATELY BUT THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS CLOSE BY AND NO OVERPASSES. THEN I REALIZED THAT GLASS WAS ALL OVER MY RIGHT ARM, SHOULDER, AND THE CENTER CONSOLE. I LOOKED UP TO SEE THAT MY MOON ROOF WAS SHATTERED. AFTER REALIZING WHAT HAD HAPPENED, I CLOSED THE SHADE SO MORE GLASS DID NOT FALL ON ME AND INSIDE MY CAR. I TOOK AN EXIT AND CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY. I TOLD THEM I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HAD HAPPENED, THAT NO ONE WAS AROUND BUT THAT MY MOON ROOF HAD JUST EXPLODED. THEY GAVE ME THE COMPANY TO CONTACT TO GET IT FIXED AND I TOOK IT THERE TO GET IT FIXED THE NEXT DAY. I HAVE PICS OF IT THOUGH. SO SCARY! I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY MOON ROOF WOULD JUST EXPLODE WITHOUT ANY EXTERIOR FORCE BEING EXERTED AND I AM SO AFRAID IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-15
- VIN: JTHBK1GG4D2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: CPO 2013 ES350 BOUGHT JANUARY 2, 2016 AT LEXUS DEALERSHIP, WHICH HAS BEEN KEPT IN AN IN-DOOR GARAGE, AND IS LIGHTLY DRIVEN. MID-APRIL 2017 BATTERY WAS DEAD, JUMP STARTED BUT THEN BATTERY DIED THE NEXT DAY. I BROUGHT VEHICLE TO ANOTHER LEXUS DEALERSHIP ON MAY 20, 2017. THEY CLAIMED BATTERY NOT WARRANTIED. I DISCOVERED THE ORIGINAL OWNER WHO BOUGHT CAR OCTOBER 2012 HAD REPLACED THE BATTERY IN 2015 WHICH MADE ME CURIOUS AS TO WHY IT WAS REPLACED SO SOON, AND WHY IT DIDN'T LAST VERY LONG. THE SERVICE MANAGER THEN MENTIONED THAT I NEEDED A COMPUTER COMPONENT WHICH HE HOPED WAS UNDER MY WARRANTY AND THEY WOULD CALL ME WHEN THE PART CAME IN. I RESEARCHED THIS PART, AND APPARENTLY LEXUS HAS KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THIS COMPONENT, WHICH WAS PROBABLY DEFECTIVE CAUSING BATTERY PROBLEMS BY NOT GOING INTO "SLEEP MODE" AND SLOWLY DRAINING AND KILLING BATTERIES. THERE SEEMS TO BE MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE ON BLOGS (ONE OF WHICH IS ATTACHED).

I love my 2013 Lexus 350 ES. The ride is incredibly smooth and comfortable. The car has lots of power when you need it. However, I find the mouse and control a bit difficult to get used to.

After owning five BMW 5 Series over a period of 25 years, I finally made the move. I test drove the new 2013 BMW 528X and it was wonderful, quite an upgrade from my 2009 528e that I was offering in trade. Then, I visited a Lexus dealer and test drove a 2013 ES350. It was love at first drive. The steering wheel was beautiful and the overall feel matched the BMW. The performance felt just as good too. The appearance is truly special. Although the BMW was an improvement, it was still the same old, same old. I guess I just needed a change. The fit and finish inside and out is perfect. The clincher was that it was $14,000 less, net of trade. I have always found that my BMWs depreciated too much over 5 years.

The ride is really solid and quiet, and it holds to the road. Plus, the Bose sound system is absolutely fantastic!

What a fantastic car! I purchased it used with 25k in 2015 as a reward for my academic achievement when I started Graduate School. Despite having driven close to 180 miles every day, the car still runs as smoothly as the day I bought it. It's truly amazing! I chose the white pearl color and it still shines brightly at night. This car is perfect for everyone's needs, whether it's long distance travel or inner city driving.

2013 Lexus ES350 Problems and Complaints - 1 Issues
Problem with your 2013 Lexus ES350? Our list of 1 known complaint reported can help you fix your 2013 Lexus ES350.
Ashton Windler 2025-01-01
In March 2013, I purchased a new ES350 from Sewell Lexus because I prioritize reliability and typically drive my cars for 8-10 years. Maury Erbay, Sewell's salesman, assured me that I was buying the most reliable car on the road. He even shared a story about how Sewell made things right for another buyer who was unsatisfied with the maintenance history of their Lexus. However, I experienced some issues with the car. On several occasions, the car died after being left at the airport for a few days. Despite Sewell's opinion that nothing was wrong with the car, I had to rely on co-workers to jump-start it. Additionally, I was surprised to learn that the tires needed replacing after only 31,000 miles. After experiencing these issues, I took the car to Sewell and was informed that Lexus had just discovered a problem with the Gateway ECU, which was subsequently replaced. Although I was frustrated with the car's unreliability, Sewell and Lexus were able to address the issue. I have often wondered why there was no recall for this issue. It seems that fixing an issue that causes customers to be stranded is not a priority for Lexus. I find it inconceivable that Sewell prides itself on service, yet they were aware of this problem and did nothing to fix it until I had been stranded again and brought the car to Sewell. Due to the multiple unnecessary drains on my battery, I insisted that the battery be replaced. Sewell initially resisted, but eventually agreed to the replacement after a lengthy argument. At 45,828 miles in April 2016, the car's locking system failed, and the driver's door actuator was replaced under warranty. The warranty expired at 50,000 miles in July 2016. At 50,200 miles in July 2016, the back seat began to squeak loudly when no passengers were riding in the seat. At 50,756 miles in August 2016, the air conditioning failed. Although lights illuminated, no sound from the air conditioner was present, and no air came from the vents. As a courtesy, Sewell picked up the car but found nothing wrong with the air conditioner as it started for them. However, the fan was noisy and needed a new bearing, which was replaced at no charge. At 52,900 miles in November 2016, the car's locking system failed again, and the passenger's door actuator was replaced at my cost ($500 parts and labor). By now, it appears that the other two doors are likely to fail soon as the quality of the actuators in the Lexus ES 350 is poor. At 53,400 miles in December 2016, a dull thumping noise quickly progressed from infrequent to extreme. Although it sounded like a suspension issue, the real issue was the sunroof rattling. This repair was projected to be a 3-4 hour repair job and was not covered under warranty. As is clear from the above, the car has been a maintenance nightmare. The reliability factor that was conveyed to me at the time of purchase has been completely non-existent. Never in my years of car ownership have I been stranded (and stranded multiple times) by any vehicle other than a Lexus. It seems like the maintenance issues are happening more frequently. I can't help but wonder when the last two door actuators will fail, since two already have. When I discovered the problem at 52,900 miles, I sent an email to Sewell's business manager (Cecily McClarin), service manager (Mason Kessner), and general manager (Dudley Haralson) expressing my dissatisfaction with the car's poor reliability. I was hoping to hear from upper-level management at Sewell, based on the Sewell promise Maury made at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, I didn't hear back from anyone. I'm disappointed that no one from Lexus made an effort to retain me as a customer by offering a trade on another Lexus at a discount to win me back. I'm now considering other car brands, as I'm prematurely nearing the end of my Lexus journey due to poor service and reliability. As an unhappy customer, I'm determined to share my experience with others.

Although I am disappointed with my ES350, which has only covered 19km, I am confident in my assessment of the vehicle. The car vibrates when stopped and the engine is engaged, which makes me uncomfortable and forces me to switch to neutral before stopping at traffic lights. Despite being told by the dealer that it is a rotor problem, I am not convinced as the vibration occurs even when I am not pressing the brake.

I have been a loyal Lexus driver for over two decades since my first ride in one. My first two Lexus vehicles each lasted over 200,000 miles and never needed any repairs beyond regular maintenance. However, my latest purchase, the 2013 ES350, has been a bit of a disappointment. The ride is quite noisy, making it difficult to have a normal conversation, due to the 18-inch low profile tires. Unfortunately, I cannot change to a higher profile tire without replacing the rims. If I were to purchase another Lexus, I would consider buying 17-inch rims. The climate control system requires too much attention to the screen, which can be dangerous while driving. The blind spots are also quite large, and the 45-degree outlook on the driver's side is not very useful. The blind spot monitor is not very helpful when trying to enter traffic at a 45-degree angle, and there is no monitoring of traffic over the driver's left shoulder. Opening and closing the trunk can also be a bit of a hassle when your hands are full. On the bright side, I do love the warm/cool seats, and the mileage is decent. However, I find the navigation system to be quite useless, but that may just be because I am used to using an iPhone.

This is a good car, but it is no better than the 2013 Camry XLE. Ours is fully loaded with a premium Nav and sound system, all leather, and rides the same as the ES350. Our Camry has more chrome and tinted windows, as well as remote start. It is loaded with every available option and has more features than the first two trims of the ES350. We rented the ES350 along with the Camry, Avalon, Accord, and Altima, and drove each car 200 miles. We did this because we got burnt on a 2010 Impala. In fact, the Nissan Altima had the best ride and most comfortable seats of all the cars we rented. They have Zero Gravity seats, which are the best, but we couldn't trust that CVT Transmission.

We purchased our 2013 ES 350 brand new in 2012 and it has been a great car to ride in with plenty of power. However, we did experience some issues with the transmission at 150,000 miles which was quite expensive to replace. Additionally, we had to replace two window regulators and the sound system amp recently went out. One minor annoyance is the number of notifications that appear on the screen when you start the car, which can reduce the available screen size and be unsafe. To turn the A/C on or off, you have to select 'menu' with the push button, then use the mouse to go to climate, which can be a bit of a hassle. While some of these issues are minor annoyances, the mechanical and electrical problems are unacceptable at this price point and can be expensive to repair.
