The Fiat 500X (Type 334) is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), since its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Following the 500L, and produced from 2014 (from 2016 model year for US), the 500X is closely related to the Jeep Renegade. Both are manufactured at FCA's SATA Plant in Melfi, Italy.

Specifications

The 500X is based on the Small Wide 4×4 architecture, a platform evolved from the GM Fiat Small platform used for the Fiat Grande Punto and Fiat 500L.

The Fiat 500X is available with several engines with optional all-wheel drive with most. At launch, engines available outside of North America included: one gasoline, the turbocharged 1.4 MultiAir2, and two MultiJet turbodiesels displacing 1.6 and 2.0 litres.

Common Fiat 500x problems

The Fiat 500X has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical and mechanical issues. Here are some of the most significant problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Wiring: Faulty wiring below the steering column has been reported to cause power steering problems, making the steering wheel difficult to control. This issue has led to a recall of several Fiat 500 models.
  • Airbag module: There is a software issue with the airbag control module on 500X models made between 24 October 2017 and 18 April 2019 that could cause a problem in the event of a collision. A Fiat dealer will be able to tell you if your car is affected and perform a software update to fix the issue.
  • Rear seat latch: The rear seat back of some cars manufactured between 2 June 2015 and 1 August 2018 could, in the event of a collision, unlatch itself and allow items from the boot to enter the interior with the potential to cause injury to those inside. Affected vehicles will need to have a new latch to be installed at a Fiat dealer to prevent this from happening.

These issues can significantly impact the safety and reliability of the Fiat 500X, and it is essential for owners to be aware of them and take appropriate action to address any problems that may arise.

I put it in park and shut the vehicle off and turned it back on again, when I shifted into drive it felt like somebody just picked up the car and dropped it. This has been an ongoing issue. Dealerships don’t know what it is. I’ve done research on this specific vehicle from other owners and they have been experiencing the same thing with this make and model of vehicle

My engine is over consuming oil and now I won't be able to repair it. I escalated it to FCA, but they can't see it either and are unable to help me. Need this to be resolved, but don't know how to.

  • Summary: The Fiat 500X has a defective part, which is the Fiat Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. The dealer here claims that they replace this part at least once a month, and there are barely any Fiats on the road here. I called their customer satisfaction center and they said they are "sorry for the inconvenience" and cannot provide any assistance in the matter. The inconvenience, specifically, is: that this part is a known problem, that the entire mirror needs replaced and the door will need be disassembled to complete that work, that the mirror isn't provided in the color of the car so there is also painting involved, and the total cost is around $2,000. The part itself is just a little $10 bit, but because of the ridiculousness involved in this faulty part, the cost is bombastically high. So, that leaves me waiting for a part that is in short supply because they need replaced constantly, and having to drive in extreme heat until it's fixed. No one should have to pay thousands of dollars or die of heat stroke because of a faulty, tiny, $10 sensor.

  • VIN: ZFBCFXBT8GP

  • Summary: The day after we had a bad storm, my car's electrical system went haywire. I was driving to work and all kinds of warning lights started flashing. Then when I came to a stop sign, stopped, then proceed to go again the car car would not go. I was still in drive but the car would not go when I pressed the pedal. So I put the car in park then back in drive and it started driving again. Then a warning came on about my power steering. I get further down the road to a stop light. I stopped and when the light turned green it would not go again while it drive. So I put it in park and back in drive and it went.i get to a stop sign about 1 mile down the road and my steering wheel locked up. So I put the car in park and back in drive and it started turning a little bit so I was able to pull off the road into an abandoned parking lot. I tried to turn the car off and it would not turn off. So I unhooked the battery cable and it cut off. I had the car towed to my house. They hooked the cables back up yo get the car onto the tow truck. Once the car was home, the wheel was fine but it had some warning messages on the dashboard. So the next day it rained again. And I went outside later that evening and my tail lights and the dashboard was illuminated. My air conditioner was running but the car was not crank. So I finally got it to the shop and they are saying water got into the RHA hub; but how? I don't have a leak in my car. I've never seen water in my car and on top of that, why is my RHA hub in the trunk? Anyway, after that I looked it up and come to find out a lot of people with Fiats have been having the same problem. And they are just as upset and lost as I am.

  • Summary: The drivers door is defective and will not open from the outside. Upon request the inspection has a cost of upwards of $1000 and customers who drive Fiat 500x models across the US have reported this as an issue. This becomes a safety problem as if there were to be a major accident, I would not be able to be rescued through the door unless I open it through the inside. This is particularly a problem if I were to have a medical emergency. There were no warnings that appeared until this door suddenly would just not open. Additionally, this is a commonly reported issue, as was confirmed to me in person at the dealership, through online forums, and through a customer support chat attached below.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-04-06
  • VIN: ZFBCFYETXGP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My car spontaneously shifts from driving to neutral while I am actively driving it. This has happened at least a half dozen times so far. Each time this has happened I cannot get my car to continue driving, since it’s shifted to neutral all by itself and stuck there. I have to come to a complete stop, put my car in park, turn the engine off, and then turn it back on again. This has happened for the last year and is happening more and more frequently. The latest incident was 4/1/2024. I talked to the Fiat dealership and they said it looks like my car should have been included in a Transmission issue recall that was assigned to 2016 Fiat 500X cars, but for some reason it wasn’t assigned to my specific VIN.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-13
  • VIN: ZFBCFYET5GP
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car had a NTSB recall on the engine. The engine needed to be replaced. After having the engine replaced I was told to pick up the vehicle which shook profusely and then had a check engine light come on only minutes from driving away from the dealership. I turn around and returned the vehicle immediately to have it remedy the situation. It took over a month and the second time I was told to pick up the car, the same thing happened again only minutes from leaving the dealership, except this time the engine started to stutter like it was going to stall. After another month of them attempting to remedy, which is now the 3rd time they told me to pick up the vehicle which was in 22nd December 2023, the engine stalled only 100 yards of driving away from the dealership in fast 2-lane traffic. The progressive deterioration of the new replaced engine after the required recall was and is clearly a danger not only to myself and my family but also to other drivers. They are now saying which is 13 of February 2024 over a month of them trying to fix it, that the car is ready to be picked up. I do not believe this vehicle is safe to be on the road. I am concerned for myself and other drivers safety if I attempt to drive this vehicle. I have been told it has been tested but they said that the other 3 times I have picked up the vehicle. There is no way to ensure or guarantee this vehicle will not stall again in dangerous traffic. I have a video of the incident with the foreman mechanic trying to start the vehicle.

  • Summary: My Fiat 500 x only has 28k miles on it, and it is a manual transmission. While driving, it will not shift into the upper gears. I was told that it needs a new transmission. • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-19
  • VIN: ZFBCFXAB2JP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased my 2018 Fiat 500X POP used in April 2023 with only 22k miles. This past weekend 12/16 when I would first start my car up and get ready to leave in the mornings after having been parked for the night, my car would start up normal and I could proceed down the street. The minute I apply the break my car would lose power, stall out or shut off completely. I would press the start button, release the break, shift the gear to drive and proceed forward. I would go about 20 mph as I was driving in a residential area then my car would stall out and shut off again leaving stuck in the roadway. I repeated the start process to pull over to a safe location. I called the dealer and they said there are no recalls for this issue, however, I located one, but my VIN is not coming back as one of the affected vehicles. This is extremely dangerous as I live in an area with freeways as the only way to get to certain areas and cannot have this vehicle shutdown on freeways because it could result in a bad accident. I am looking for any assistance I can receive from this complaint. Fiat is not helpful, and the closest dealer is 2hrs from my residence.

Latest negative Fiat 500x car reviews

  1. Johann Schimmel 2024-11-19

    Vehicle year: 2016

Although I was initially excited to get this car due to its cool looks and nice features, I have unfortunately been disappointed with its quality. The excessive road noise, loose and rattling sunroof, and moldy air conditioner unit have been persistent issues that have made it difficult to enjoy long road trips. Despite my attempts to address these issues, Chrysler has denied any problems and I have been stuck with this car. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car or Chrysler in general.

  2. Regan Olson 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2017

I bought my first car, a Fiat 500x, on October 26th, 2015. Unfortunately, the very next day, the car stalled and began smoking. The Electric E-Brake turned on, making it impossible to move the car from the street. To make matters worse, the steering wheel completely locked up, even though the car had only 81 miles on it. It took two hours for the tow truck to arrive and remove the car. The dealer it was sent to took two days to get back to me, which was past the 48-hour return policy. They informed me that a rod had shot through the engine, and that they needed to order a new engine for my new car. It took two weeks for the engine to arrive, and another week to have it put in. After the engine was installed, they tested the car and found that a new fuse and starter were needed. It took a week and a half to receive and install these parts. Finally, they tested the car again and found that a new air intake valve was needed. This added a little less than a full week to my already 4 weeks and 3 days in the shop for a problem that a new car should not be having. Finally, on December 4th, 2015, I received a call that my car was ready to be picked up. When I arrived at the dealership, the employees at the service center expressed their gratitude for my patience and understanding throughout the entire process. Although I had to call the dealership multiple times for updates, the woman I was dealing with was always polite and helpful. The dealership even called me a few times to check on the car after I received it. While I did have some frustrations with the company, I appreciate the efforts made by the dealership to make things right. I would recommend them to others.

  3. Brian O'Hara 2024-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2016

I confidently owned the Fiat 500 L, which was unfortunately totalled. However, I walked away from the crash unscathed, which is a testament to the car's safety features. Despite encountering some issues with my previous car, I still considered the 500 X due to its affordable price and impressive accessories. During my experience with the 500 X as a rental car, I noticed some minor issues with the engine and back-up camera, despite it only having 4000 miles on it. I had to replace the back-up camera at 15000 miles and the brakes at 20000 miles. I hope this information proves useful.

  4. Evert Von 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2017

Firstly, I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your car. It sounds like you have had a difficult time with it. From what you have described, it seems like there have been a few recalls on the car since you purchased it. I can understand how frustrating this must be for you, especially with the safety concerns you have mentioned. Additionally, it is unfortunate that the tires blew out after only four months and that there was no spare in the car. I can imagine how inconvenient that must have been for you. Regarding the oil leak, it is concerning that the levels were low after a recent oil change. I hope that the dealership can determine the cause of this issue and resolve it for you. It is also unfortunate that you have had trouble with the keyless remote and the gas mileage has not met your expectations. I hope that Fiat can address these issues and provide a satisfactory resolution for you. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention, and we will do our best to assist you in resolving these issues.

  5. Aaron Goodwin 2024-10-28

    Vehicle year: 2017

At 24113 miles and less than 2 years old, my vehicle began stalling after displaying numerous different warning lights. Unfortunately, over the course of 7 months, I was left stranded 11 times after stalling on the expressway and in town. Despite the dealership replacing a total of 5 new parts and returning it to me 'fixed', the issue persisted. Although I had a warranty for 5 years and had even extended it, I didn't want to trade my vehicle. I simply wanted FIAT to fix it. However, they refused to buy it back, give me a comparable vehicle, or acknowledge that it was a lemon and they couldn't figure out the problem. I had to trade it in and take a financial loss as I couldn't continue to put my family in harm's way. Unfortunately, my experience with FCA staff was not helpful and my entire experience with FIAT was horrible. However, I must say that the local dealership did as Chrysler/Fiat directed them and they actually stepped up to offer more on a trade than usual and took the vehicle 'as-is', which was still not repaired. Although I will never purchase another FIAT or recommend it to others, I appreciate the effort made by the local dealership.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you and your wife are enjoying your 500X! It sounds like you've got all the bells and whistles with the AWD, safety suite, and leather interior. It's great to hear that the car feels solid on the road and that you haven't experienced any squeaks or rattles. I understand your thoughts on the transmission and it's great that you're still happy with it overall. It's also good to hear that you haven't had any problems with the car so far. I hope that FCA will continue to improve the fuel economy in future models. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the 500X with us!The 4 liter performs well in suburban driving, especially if you catch the green lights. I've even seen it get better than 35 mpg on occasion. Interestingly, sales figures show that the Jeep Renegade is outselling the 500X by about 10:1, but personally, I much prefer the X over the Jeep. I love how it looks and how it drives, even though they are essentially on the same platform. Excitingly, the 2018 models will come equipped with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, along with FCA's latest Uconnect entertainment suite.

I recently purchased a 2018 pop manual transmission and it is a real beauty. I highly recommend this car. It's perfect for everyday use and comfortably seats up to five adults. No need for a huge van when you have this normal-sized car!

I've been really pleased with this car. The ride is excellent - quiet and smooth. The gas mileage is great, and the power and handling are fantastic! It feels like I'm driving a sports car. I'm glad the computer has a setting to notify you about your speed. I have mine set for 10 miles above the limit, and it always reminds me, as it's easy to lose track of how fast you're going. You can't feel it shifting, except when you first start out, as it's a little hesitant. The interior is comparable to cars that are much more expensive. The materials used and fit and finish are excellent. My only complaint is that Fiat needs to market this car through their Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler dealers, and service them there as well, or at the very least, require Alfa/Maserati dealers to service them under warranty. I live in a fairly large metropolitan city, and I have to drive 60 to 75 miles to the closest dealer for warranty work. I only wish I drove more, but I work from home...

I purchased my Fiat 500X on February 24th, 2016 and it has been a great little SUV so far! I have driven about 2500 miles and have not experienced any problems. It rides smoothly and is easy to get in and out of due to its higher seating position. I love the unique style of the car and have received many compliments on it while filling up at gas stations. Previously, I owned a Subaru Crosstrek but unfortunately, after an accident, I could not afford another one. The Fiat 500X was a great alternative and felt very similar to my previous car. Although I eventually traded it in for another Crosstrek in August 2016, I do miss my Fiat. While the value may not have been there for me, I did not have any issues with the car itself. I would definitely recommend considering a Fiat 500X, but ultimately the decision is up to the individual. Personally, I am a fan of Subarus, but I do appreciate the convenience of having a closer Fiat dealership. Thank you for considering my experience!

I was searching for a car after a deer totaled my beloved Prius. Since we're moving to the countryside in West Virginia, an AWD was a must-have. I went to the dealership with the intention of looking at Imprezas. When we arrived at the lot, we saw the two Imprezas on my list, and then noticed this little darling tucked in the corner with AWD on the windshield. At first, we both chuckled, then walked up for a closer look. It was pretty much love at first sight! The car is charming, both exterior and interior. I got the keys, got in, and said, 'Wow, these seats are comfortable!' I took it for a spin both in town and on the highway and was pleasantly surprised at how nimble it is to drive. The comfort was great, and the speed - let's just say this car has pickup!! It was so smooth on the highway that my husband said, 'Honey, you're going to have to watch your speed in this.' We went back to the dealership to check out the Imprezas (since that's what we went for), sat in one and immediately got out. We didn't even take it out of the parking spot. We walked back in, asked for the Fiat 500x Easy keys back, and drove it home that day. The drive home was two hours, and I loved every minute of it. My husband drove it all the next while we ran errands and said if he was in the market for a car, he'd look for one for himself. No, it doesn't get the same gas mileage as the Prius, but Prius doesn't make an AWD, and that was more important to me this time. I bought it used, 2016, 10,000 miles on it, not one scratch or stain - perfect condition. I love, love, love this car! Give it a try, and you won't regret it!
