The Fiat 500X (Type 334) is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), since its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Following the 500L, and produced from 2014 (from 2016 model year for US), the 500X is closely related to the Jeep Renegade. Both are manufactured at FCA's SATA Plant in Melfi, Italy.

Specifications

The 500X is based on the Small Wide 4×4 architecture, a platform evolved from the GM Fiat Small platform used for the Fiat Grande Punto and Fiat 500L.

The Fiat 500X is available with several engines with optional all-wheel drive with most. At launch, engines available outside of North America included: one gasoline, the turbocharged 1.4 MultiAir2, and two MultiJet turbodiesels displacing 1.6 and 2.0 litres.

In North America, the Fiat 500X features:

Common Fiat 500x problems

The Fiat 500X has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical and mechanical issues. Here are some of the most significant problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Wiring: Faulty wiring below the steering column has been reported to cause power steering problems, making the steering wheel difficult to control. This issue has led to a recall of several Fiat 500 models.
  • Airbag module: There is a software issue with the airbag control module on 500X models made between 24 October 2017 and 18 April 2019 that could cause a problem in the event of a collision. A Fiat dealer will be able to tell you if your car is affected and perform a software update to fix the issue.
  • Rear seat latch: The rear seat back of some cars manufactured between 2 June 2015 and 1 August 2018 could, in the event of a collision, unlatch itself and allow items from the boot to enter the interior with the potential to cause injury to those inside. Affected vehicles will need to have a new latch to be installed at a Fiat dealer to prevent this from happening.

These issues can significantly impact the safety and reliability of the Fiat 500X, and it is essential for owners to be aware of them and take appropriate action to address any problems that may arise.

I put it in park and shut the vehicle off and turned it back on again, when I shifted into drive it felt like somebody just picked up the car and dropped it. This has been an ongoing issue. Dealerships don’t know what it is. I’ve done research on this specific vehicle from other owners and they have been experiencing the same thing with this make and model of vehicle

They found the active recall W-80, , had me do the 1500 mile test, came back but for some reason, now it is not even visible anymore. Now my check engine light is on and the oil light is on. My engine is over consuming oil and now I won't be able to repair it. I escalated it to FCA, but they can't see it either and are unable to help me. Need this to be resolved, but don't know how to.

  • Summary: The Fiat 500X has a defective part, which is the Fiat Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. The dealer here claims that they replace this part at least once a month, and there are barely any Fiats on the road here. I called their customer satisfaction center and they said they are "sorry for the inconvenience" and cannot provide any assistance in the matter. The inconvenience, specifically, is: that this part is a known problem, that the entire mirror needs replaced and the door will need be disassembled to complete that work, that the mirror isn't provided in the color of the car so there is also painting involved, and the total cost is around $2,000. The part itself is just a little $10 bit, but because of the ridiculousness involved in this faulty part, the cost is bombastically high. So, that leaves me waiting for a part that is in short supply because they need replaced constantly, and having to drive in extreme heat until it's fixed. No one should have to pay thousands of dollars or die of heat stroke because of a faulty, tiny, $10 sensor.

  • Summary: The day after we had a bad storm, my car's electrical system went haywire. I was driving to work and all kinds of warning lights started flashing. Then when I came to a stop sign, stopped, then proceed to go again the car car would not go. I was still in drive but the car would not go when I pressed the pedal. So I put the car in park then back in drive and it started driving again. Then a warning came on about my power steering. I get further down the road to a stop light. I stopped and when the light turned green it would not go again while it drive. So I put it in park and back in drive and it went.i get to a stop sign about 1 mile down the road and my steering wheel locked up. So I put the car in park and back in drive and it started turning a little bit so I was able to pull off the road into an abandoned parking lot. I tried to turn the car off and it would not turn off. So I unhooked the battery cable and it cut off. I had the car towed to my house. They hooked the cables back up yo get the car onto the tow truck. Once the car was home, the wheel was fine but it had some warning messages on the dashboard. So the next day it rained again. And I went outside later that evening and my tail lights and the dashboard was illuminated. My air conditioner was running but the car was not crank. So I finally got it to the shop and they are saying water got into the RHA hub; but how? I don't have a leak in my car. I've never seen water in my car and on top of that, why is my RHA hub in the trunk? Anyway, after that I looked it up and come to find out a lot of people with Fiats have been having the same problem. And they are just as upset and lost as I am.

  • Summary: The drivers door is defective and will not open from the outside. Upon request the inspection has a cost of upwards of $1000 and customers who drive Fiat 500x models across the US have reported this as an issue. This becomes a safety problem as if there were to be a major accident, I would not be able to be rescued through the door unless I open it through the inside. This is particularly a problem if I were to have a medical emergency. There were no warnings that appeared until this door suddenly would just not open. Additionally, this is a commonly reported issue, as was confirmed to me in person at the dealership, through online forums, and through a customer support chat attached below.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-04-06
  • VIN: ZFBCFYETXGP

  • Summary: My car spontaneously shifts from driving to neutral while I am actively driving it. This has happened at least a half dozen times so far. Each time this has happened I cannot get my car to continue driving, since it’s shifted to neutral all by itself and stuck there. I have to come to a complete stop, put my car in park, turn the engine off, and then turn it back on again. This has happened for the last year and is happening more and more frequently. The latest incident was 4/1/2024. I talked to the Fiat dealership and they said it looks like my car should have been included in a Transmission issue recall that was assigned to 2016 Fiat 500X cars, but for some reason it wasn’t assigned to my specific VIN.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-13
  • VIN: ZFBCFYET5GP
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car had a NTSB recall on the engine. The engine needed to be replaced. After having the engine replaced I was told to pick up the vehicle which shook profusely and then had a check engine light come on only minutes from driving away from the dealership. I turn around and returned the vehicle immediately to have it remedy the situation. It took over a month and the second time I was told to pick up the car, the same thing happened again only minutes from leaving the dealership, except this time the engine started to stutter like it was going to stall. After another month of them attempting to remedy, which is now the 3rd time they told me to pick up the vehicle which was in 22nd December 2023, the engine stalled only 100 yards of driving away from the dealership in fast 2-lane traffic. The progressive deterioration of the new replaced engine after the required recall was and is clearly a danger not only to myself and my family but also to other drivers. They are now saying which is 13 of February 2024 over a month of them trying to fix it, that the car is ready to be picked up. I do not believe this vehicle is safe to be on the road. I am concerned for myself and other drivers safety if I attempt to drive this vehicle. I have been told it has been tested but they said that the other 3 times I have picked up the vehicle. There is no way to ensure or guarantee this vehicle will not stall again in dangerous traffic. I have a video of the incident with the foreman mechanic trying to start the vehicle.

  • Summary: My Fiat 500 x only has 28k miles on it, and it is a manual transmission. While driving, it will not shift into the upper gears. I was told that it needs a new transmission. • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-19
  • VIN: ZFBCFXAB2JP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased my 2018 Fiat 500X POP used in April 2023 with only 22k miles. This past weekend 12/16 when I would first start my car up and get ready to leave in the mornings after having been parked for the night, my car would start up normal and I could proceed down the street. The minute I apply the break my car would lose power, stall out or shut off completely. I would press the start button, release the break, shift the gear to drive and proceed forward. I would go about 20 mph as I was driving in a residential area then my car would stall out and shut off again leaving stuck in the roadway. I repeated the start process to pull over to a safe location. I called the dealer and they said there are no recalls for this issue, however, I located one, but my VIN is not coming back as one of the affected vehicles. This is extremely dangerous as I live in an area with freeways as the only way to get to certain areas and cannot have this vehicle shutdown on freeways because it could result in a bad accident. I am looking for any assistance I can receive from this complaint. Fiat is not helpful, and the closest dealer is 2hrs from my residence.

  1. Zackery Kerluke 2025-09-09

    Vehicle year: 2017

I have owned this car for just over two years and it has been in the shop 9 times for various issues, including a broken tailgate latch, a broken door handle, a broken speaker, a malfunctioning forward collision mitigation system (which took 5 times to fix!) and now an engine warning light with a message saying 'drive selection mode not available.' Despite paying an extra $3,000 for an upgraded warranty that includes a loaner car, I have had to argue with the dealer every time to actually get that loaner car. I have been without this car for weeks on end and I am really tired of taking it in for service and dealing with uncaring and incompetent service personnel. For the current problem, I have now been without my car for two weeks, and when I called FCA headquarters, I was told that the dealership hasn't even looked at it yet. I am disappointed with FCA customer care as they have been of little help. They denied a lemon law claim and that department refused to even call and tell me. However, I am hopeful that FCA will take the necessary steps to make things right. Until then, I would advise others to be cautious when considering purchasing any of their vehicles. Thank you for your attention.

    Vehicle year: 2016

Firstly, I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your car. It sounds like you have had a difficult time with it. From what you have described, it seems like there have been a few recalls on the car since you purchased it. I can understand how frustrating this must be for you, especially with the safety concerns you have mentioned. Additionally, it is unfortunate that the tires blew out after only four months and that there was no spare in the car. I can imagine how inconvenient that must have been for you. Regarding the oil leak, it is concerning that the levels were low after a recent oil change. I hope that the dealership can determine the cause of this issue and resolve it for you. It is also unfortunate that you have had trouble with the keyless remote and the gas mileage has not met your expectations. I hope that Fiat can address these issues and provide a satisfactory resolution for you. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention, and we will do our best to assist you in resolving these issues.

    Vehicle year: 2016

This is the newest vehicle I have ever purchased (purchased in 2017). During the test drive, I noticed a lag when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear (it's an automatic but can be manually shifted if the driver chooses). The dealer convinced me that it was because I was used to a 6 cylinder (Chevy Impala) and the Fiat was a 4. So I made a rushed purchase...only to be disappointed! It turns out that the lag is because it has a 9-speed transmission. I still can't stand the lag when shifting gears. Unfortunately, there were more issues to come. Within a few months, the plastic, poorly manufactured driver's door handle snapped off, causing me to have to enter through the passenger side. Additionally, half of the gas tank entry (I don't know what it's called) snapped off as well. Luckily, those were covered by my 1-year warranty. Following that, I've had nothing but problems that I assume are electrical or related to the transmission. I've had to downshift going uphill in order for the RPMs to catch (I'm not a car expert so I hope that makes sense). That happened several times even after being fixed several times. I bought my Fiat 500X Trek a few weeks ago and unfortunately experienced a breakdown during my drive home from the dealer. It shut off at 40 mph and was difficult to start afterwards. I followed my salesperson's advice and took it to the service department the next day, with the engine light on for the entire trip. The service tech explained that the computer was reading fault codes and self-correcting as it learns. Although this conclusion made me uneasy, I trusted my service manager's advice and left with instructions to return if any further problems arose. Later that day, I stopped for a soda and when I attempted to restart my vehicle, it wouldn't start. After several attempts, I called the service department back to report my problem, but was only able to leave a message. After waiting 20 minutes for their call back, I was able to start the motor successfully, but the engine light remained on and the car seemed to be running out of tune with little power. The service department finally returned my call and instructed me to return the vehicle again, which I did the very next day and was awarded a rental car. After about 8 days, I was advised that my Fiat had a new onboard body computer module installed and that it was fine and ready for pick up. I finally made my first successful trip home with this car. However, the very next day, the vehicle became difficult to start and remained in 3rd gear at all times, with the engine light on. So, again, I called the service department and was advised to have the vehicle towed, which I did with the assistance of the Fiat Roadside Assistance and a local towing service, and was awarded another rental vehicle. After several days, I was advised that there was a loose/corroded ground wire on the side of my transmission, which was repaired, and my vehicle was ready for pick up.I had a few issues with my vehicle in the past, but thankfully everything has been resolved. Although there were some unexpected shutdowns while driving, the service department was able to fix the problem. The staff were very helpful and did their best to assist me during the process. I'm happy to say that my new Fiat has been running smoothly for a couple of years now, with only minor issues such as the trim coming off. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experience and would recommend this line of cars to others.Leaving a very sticky substance underneath that seems to get on everything can be very annoying and make things look ugly. However, it starts and goes. I wouldn't purchase another one though. Good luck!

I had to give my car a name for the first time ever. Meet Donatella! She sat in the showroom with her shiny white and chrome finish, huge sunroof open to let the light show off the tobacco leather interior. The effortless 2.5L engine and smooth ride sold me. However, that same day, I test drove and bargained for several other cars before deciding on the Fiat. Over some tense deliberations, my spouse and I agreed to throw out logic and get the Fiat. Yes, we've had some issues with squeaky brakes and a blown fuse for the locks, but Fiat of Manhattan has been nothing but professional and accommodating with walk-in Saturday service. I've enjoyed nice lunches in Midtown and walks in Central Park. Donatella gets a lot of attention and we are often pointed out as being the 'blue pill car'. People look at it in passing, take pictures, and I'm a star at the Whole Foods parking lot. For particulars, I find the transmission unnoticeable for the most part. When I want to notice, I'm rather impressed with the execution but do think it's a little over the top for such a vehicle. The engine is smooth, smooth, smooth and plenty powerful. Donatella does like to drink in the city at 19mpg but does take it easy on the N.J. Turnpike at 30mpg with cruise mostly set at 75, um 79mph. Uconnect works very well and is so much easier than the BMW/Mini system as it shows as much love for my Android as it does for my Apple phones. The dog seems happy with the back seat.I really appreciate the sunroof in this car, especially the fixed glass part over the back seat which opens up the space tremendously. I empathize with the previous reviewers who had some issues with the car, but I did my research beforehand and found that most known issues have bulletins on the faults. I even joined an Italian FB group and they go crazy over the car, despite having some similar issues. Although I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver, I'm really enjoying the sense of occasion I'm getting with the Fiat. Even after a year of ownership and 13,000 miles, I still get compliments on the car and enjoy driving it. The 9-spd auto is still a work in progress, but it's never rude and sometimes works like a charm. The locks blew a fuse, but it was fixed right away on a Saturday afternoon dealer service visit while I went for a coffee. We only had one big snowfall this past winter, but the car handled it well. Overall, I'm really happy with my Fiat 500x and the sense of occasion it brings to my life.We left the Fiat covered for over a week, but other than that, we absolutely love it! The sunroof, heated seats and steering wheel, remote start, and UConnect with SIRI are all fantastic features. The sporty exhaust, along with the surprisingly sporty down and up shifts, remind you that someone with a soul added a bit of character to the car. With my yearly mileage, fuel economy isn't a huge concern for me, but I'm happy to report that we averaged 20mpg even with 5800 miles at an average speed of 17mph. On 80mph turnpike runs, we saw 28mpg, and more docile 70mph runs showed 32mpg. While the city mpg is at the bottom and both are disappointing considering the challenged 9-speed auto, the highway mpg is competitive. Overall, I'm a happy owner, and I think the character of the Fiat will keep me that way even if something nefarious comes up in the future. UPDATE: At just under 16000 miles and 1-1/2 years with the 500x, I'm still loving the Fiat! Plus, I haven't had to make any maintenance visits in the last year, which is a huge plus.

I have a bit of a bias towards the Fiat brand, having owned a 128 Sport Coupe in the 70s and currently a 2012 500 Abarth. The 500x was something I was interested in, but I had to do a little convincing to get my wife on board. We traded in her uncomfortable Jeep Wrangler Sport, and we were both happy to say goodbye to it. Moving into the 500x, we did sacrifice a little space, but aside from that, we really love this vehicle. The ride is comfortable, the handling is precise, the acceleration is adequate, and it's an absolute treat to drive. That's one thing about my Fiats that sets them apart from all the other vehicles we've owned - they're just plain fun to drive! As of 02/06/2018, this vehicle has only gotten better with age, and we still enjoy all aspects of it very much.

I came across an ad for this car early last year and it was love at first sight. However, it wasn't going to be available for a few more months which was a bummer. Finally, it was released and I took it out for a few test drives. I waited for reviews from other buyers, but it took forever and there weren't many out there. I was a bit scared because the reviews that were available weren't very positive. I've always owned Honda's, so I was hesitant and test drove other vehicles. I tried the Honda HRV, but it seemed very cheap to me. I kept searching the inventory for my little Fiat. I wanted a white lounge model with black leather seats and a sunroof. They had them within 50 miles of me, but by the time I got more serious about finally going and getting it, of course, they didn't have any within 200 miles of me that had the sunroof. So, mine doesn't have the sunroof, but that's okay. I was kind of worried about the mesh that's up there anyway because the sunlight comes into the car a little too much. The lady I spoke to at one of the dealerships said you could tint the sunroof, but I also thought that the mesh will eventually deteriorate. Anyhow, I got a fantastic deal on mine and I absolutely love it! I think I will name it Marshmallow, my 20-year-old daughter's idea. I've had my baby since February and I haven't had any real issues with it. The one thing is when you lock the doors with the button outside, sometimes you have to press it a few times. The transmission is a little tetchy and not real quick off the line, but that's okay I guess. Fewer tickets, right? I was worried it wouldn't get up hills very well, but it does just fine. The seats are super comfortable. Another reviewer mentioned the cool gas cap, but there isn't one, yay! You just open the door and boom, you stick the nozzle in and you can't just stick anything in there either, so you don't have to worry about people stealing your gas.I was a bit hesitant about getting this car (even though I really wanted it). I was worried because it's a Fiat and not a Honda. But now, every day when I go outside and see my little baby, I'm so glad I got it!

I had a great time driving the Fiat 500X during my recent trip, even though I also tried my friend's Mazda 3 (which was also a rental) during the same period. I really enjoyed the free-revving engine, confidence-inspiring handling, and steering. The only downsides were the expected lack of interior space and a slightly jerky transmission at times on some modes. I also shot a video during the trip, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ8pY-3twms. Of course, my reliability rating is based solely on my rental period, but the car was almost like new with only a few scratches both inside and out (unlike a regular Fiat 500 I rented some time back, which had a broken seat folding lever and a couple of loose parts at around 45000 miles).

The 500x wasn't my first choice, but after carefully reading all the reviews about all the cars, I was torn between the Subaru Crosstrek and the 500x. It wasn't until I went for a test drive that I was convinced. Sitting inside the 500x felt solid, comfortable, and well thought out, while sitting inside the Crosstrek felt cheap and unrefined. The interior design of the 500x is superior to that of the Crosstrek. Although the drivability of the Subaru Crosstrek admittedly felt better, the 500x is still a great car to drive. The gear system on the Subaru was smoother and lighter, and the suspension felt supple. The 500x I test drove was a bit stiff, and the steering felt tight, but I didn't hear the exaggerated loud cabin everyone complained about, nor did I sense the jerky transmission. Perhaps it had been reprogrammed already. I purchased the car in Sep. 2016 and those issues have been addressed. My previous cars have been a 1998 VW Jetta, 2003 Audi A4, 2006 Honda Element, and most recently the 2013 Fiat 500e. I chose the 500x due to the extra incentive for being a return Fiat customer, plus the rebate, plus the dealer discount for end-of-year sale. The savings added up and it became a no-brainer to go with the 500x. Although the reviews had been so bad, I really felt I made a compromise for the money saved. But so far, things have been great and all the claims had been unfounded. I find the handling of the 500x to be amazing. After I drop the kids off at school, I take a longer drive through the hills of Los Gatos because the car is so fun to drive. I have also driven up steep hills and pushed the limits around corners and have yet to feel out of control. The acceleration is average, not as responsive as the electric 500e or the Audi 1.8T, but still good. I suppose that's comparing apples to oranges. I sat in the back of both Crosstrek and 500x, and they were both pretty snug with just enough leg room for somebody 5'8Long story short, I don't feel like I compromised just to get a better price. If the prices were the same for the Crosstrek and the 500x, I would still choose the 500x. It has more personality and is much nicer to look at. We'll have to see how reliable it is in the long term, but I'm comforted by the 48k/5 year bumper to bumper warranty.
