The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).

From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.

Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

Common 1993 Lincoln Town car problems

The Lincoln Town Car, a luxury sedan produced by Ford Motor Company, has been known for its reliability and high aesthetic value:

  • Air Suspension Struts and Compressor Failure: Another common problem with the Lincoln Town Car is the failure of the air suspension struts and compressor. This issue can cause the car to sag or bottom out, affecting its ride height and handling. The average cost to fix this problem is around $1,200, with an average mileage of 62,000 miles.
  • Air Conditioning (A/C) Problems: The A/C system of the Lincoln Town Car has also been reported to have problems, with issues such as leaks, compressor failure, and inadequate cooling. The average cost to fix A/C problems is around $3,300, with an average mileage of 64,000 miles.
  • Vehicle Control Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the vehicle's control, such as unexpected jerking or acceleration, which can increase the risk of accidents. These issues usually happen at around 54,400 miles.
  • Faulty Components: Faulty components such as the fuel filter, throttle position sensor, or catalytic converter can also affect the Lincoln Town Car's acceleration, causing it to hesitate or lose power.
  • Radiator Leaks: Radiator leaks can cause the car to overheat, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Turn Signals and Hazard Lights: Issues with the turn signals and hazard lights can affect the car's safety and visibility on the road.

It's important to note that these problems may not affect all 1993 Lincoln Town Cars, and the frequency and severity of these issues can vary depending on various factors, such as maintenance history, driving conditions, and mileage. However, being aware of these common problems can help potential buyers make informed decisions and take proactive measures to maintain their vehicles.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-23
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1LNLM81W0PY
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: MY 1993 LINCOLN TOWN CAR CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED UP. THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE FOR SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE HE FIRE STARTED. THE FORD COMPANY CLAIMED (BASED ONLY ON PICTURES THAT I SENT THEM) THAT THERE WAS TOO MUCH FIRE DAMAGE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE FIRE WAS A RESULT OF A DEFECTIVE PART WHICH HAD A RECALL.. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT'S REPORT, WHICH I ALSO PROVIDED TO FORD, STATES THAT THE FIRE APPEARED TO BE AN UNDER THE HOOD ELECTRICAL FIRE. I RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM FORD THAT THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS BEING RECALLED. THE RECALL NOTICE STATES THAT FORD CANNOT BE CONFIDENT THAT OVER MANY YEARS IN SERVICE, THE TYPE OF SCDS INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE WILL NOT LEAK, POSING THE RISK OF AN UNDERHOOD FIRE. THIS CONDITION MAY OCCUR EITHER WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED OR WHEN IT IS BEING OPERATED, EVEN IF THE SPEED CONTROL IS NOT USED. YET, WHEN I SUBMITTED MY CLAIM, I WAS TOLD THAT THE FIRE HAD CAUSED TOO MUCH DAMAGE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE AND WAS ASKED TO CONTACT MY INSURANCE COMPANY. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THE DID NOT SEND ANYONE TO INSPECT THE CAR BEFORE MAKING THIS DETERMINATION BECAUSE I HAD AND STILL HAVE THE CAR IN STORAGE. THIS IS A REQUEST THAT MY CLAIM BE RECONSIDERED AND THAT I BE COMPENSATED FOR MY LOSSES IN THIS MATTER. *TR

  • Summary: 1993 LINCOLN TOWN CAR CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT TURN OFF AFTER APPLYING BRAKES. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 55 MPH I APPROACHED A RED LIGHT AND APPLIED THE BREAK AND THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT TURN OFF. TO AVOID A COLLISION THE BREAKS WERE APPLIED AS HARD AS POSSIBLE AND I PUT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL, WHEREAS THE ENGINE RPM RACED BUT THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING. AFTER THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I PUT THE VEHICLE BACK IN DRIVE AND PRECEDED TO THE CURB WHERE I AGAIN PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I INSPECTED THE THROTTLE AND CRUISE CONTROL LINKAGE AND FOUND NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. I DISCONNECTED THE CRUISE CONTROL LINKAGE AND WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE IDLED NORMALLY. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC AND UPON HIS INSPECTION HIS ONLY FINDING WAS A BLOWN FUSE FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS. HE CHANGED THE FUSE AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOW SHIFT OUT OF PARK. HE TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND USED THE CRUISE CONTROL WITHOUT ANY ABNORMAL ANOMALIES. *TR

Negative 1993 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Randal Jones 2024-11-17

The car handles well and is comfortable even on long trips. However, there are a few issues that need to be addressed. For example, every time the turn signal is used, the wipers move, which can be quite annoying. Additionally, the wiper motor has stopped returning the blades to the stowed position, leaving them in the middle of the window. The HVAC system only works on two settings, which can be inconvenient. The radio and cassette deck have also stopped working, and the rear window won't go up or down. Finally, the auto release fuel door doesn't work anymore, and you have to release it manually from inside the trunk. Despite these issues, the car is still a great choice for those who prioritize comfort and handling.

  2. Terrell Ward 2024-07-18

Hi there! I understand that you were told that this car has a new engine with only 40,000 miles on it, but the odometer reads well over 300,000. I also noticed through Carfax that it's considered a gross polluter and failed the emissions inspection on 2/18/03. Let's work together to find a solution to this issue!

Positive 1993 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Jules Hauck 2025-01-06

I've owned many Lincoln's since 1969 mark 3, but this all-white, blue interior car stole my heart when it had 291,000 miles on it. That was over six years ago, and now it has over 369,000 miles on it. It starts every day and runs perfectly. Just make sure you change the oil on that speedy, dependable 4.6 engine. I couldn't believe it when I checked to see if it qualified for 'cash for Clunkers' (I wasn't going to sell, just curious), but it didn't qualify. The overall gas mileage is a bit high, but it's worth it for such a reliable car. I had a good laugh with my boss when his 2009 Escalade qualified, but my daughter has the exact same car, my son's wife has a Mark, and he has two Town Cars. In the words of a Russian immigrant, 'They last forever.'

This is a very comfortable and dependable car, perfect for families. It has plenty of room and is a great choice for those who value space and reliability.

I noticed that the paint is peeling along the bottom of the back fenders and around the bumpers, leaving a yellow undercoat showing. I'm hoping that there will be a recall on the paint, similar to what happened with the Ford trucks. Additionally, I've had to replace one set of brake shoes every 4 to 6 months, while the other 3 sets are still in like-new condition. My mechanic informed me that there's a defective design in the brake system that causes this problem. I'm keeping an eye out for a recall on this issue because it's both expensive and dangerous.

Great car! It has 113000 miles and no leaks. It runs quietly and smoothly, starting up instantly. There are no vibrations or engine noise.

This car is outstanding! It's great to drive and very comfortable. However, it does require a lot of gas. On the bright side, it keeps its performance for a long time, making it a great deal to buy even when it's old. The only downside is that the maintenance can be quite expensive.
