fiat logo

The Fiat 500X (Type 334) is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), since its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Following the 500L, and produced from 2014 (from 2016 model year for US), the 500X is closely related to the Jeep Renegade. Both are manufactured at FCA's SATA Plant in Melfi, Italy.

Specifications

The 500X is based on the Small Wide 4×4 architecture, a platform evolved from the GM Fiat Small platform used for the Fiat Grande Punto and Fiat 500L.

The Fiat 500X is available with several engines with optional all-wheel drive with most. At launch, engines available outside of North America included: one gasoline, the turbocharged 1.4 MultiAir2, and two MultiJet turbodiesels displacing 1.6 and 2.0 litres.

Common Fiat 500x 2016 problems

The 2016 Fiat 500X has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details on some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Engine Problems: Engine problems received the most complaints from Fiat 500X owners. Issues include burning oil, broken motor mounts, and stalling while driving. Some owners have reported continuous electrical issues during ownership, such as batteries needing to be replaced several times, headlamps intermittently losing power, and infotainment systems failing.
  • Transmission Slipping: Transmission slipping is the top reported issue, with one owner noting that of the 19 days they’d owned their Fiat 500X, it was being worked on at the dealership for 12 of them.
  • Electrical System Issues: Users have reported electrical and mechanical problems with the 2016 Fiat 500X. Engine cooling fans have been reported to be defective, causing the engine to overheat and flashing warning lights. The rear blinkers and parking lights frequently blow out, requiring frequent bulb replacement. The radio and other equipment frequently shut off, making it difficult for the driver to drive without incident due to a weak battery not receiving enough charge from the alternator while driving .
  • Brake Problems: Owners have reported that the brakes occasionally lock up and squeal when applied. Dealers replaced the brake pads and cleaned the excess sealant from the front brake-caliper adapters .
  • Door Handle and Seatbelt Issues: The door and trunk handles were discovered to be of inferior quality, breaking into the hand when the user attempted to open the door. The seatbelt buckle had to be replaced by several users because they kept forgetting to fasten, creating a serious safety hazard .
  • Fires: Users have reported that their cars have caught fire while they were parked and that they smelled burning before doing so. Both the insurance provider and Fiat were unable to determine the cause or reason for the car's total destruction .

These issues contribute to the 2016 Fiat 500X being considered an unreliable car with a high yearly maintenance cost and common customer complaints.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: ZFBCFXBT9GP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driving on the highway approximately 55 MPH and the vehicle went automatically went into neutral thankfully I was able to pull off to the shoulder. I put it in park and shut the vehicle off and turned it back on again, when I shifted into drive it felt like somebody just picked up the car and dropped it. This has been an ongoing issue. Dealerships don’t know what it is. I’ve done research on this specific vehicle from other owners and they have been experiencing the same thing with this make and model of vehicle

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
  • VIN: ZFBCFXBT8GP
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Hi, I received a recall notice from FCA regarding oil consumption - I threw the letter out, but took the car to dealer. They found the active recall W-80, , had me do the 1500 mile test, came back but for some reason, now it is not even visible anymore. Now my check engine light is on and the oil light is on. My engine is over consuming oil and now I won't be able to repair it. I escalated it to FCA, but they can't see it either and are unable to help me. Need this to be resolved, but don't know how to.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
  • VIN: ZFBCFYET0GP
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Fiat 500X. The contact stated that the cover over the button needed to open the driver’s side door would frequently fall off. Over time, the driver’s side door handle had fractured upon an attempt to open the door. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • VIN: ZFBCFYBT0GP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The Fiat 500X has a defective part, which is the Fiat Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. The dealer here claims that they replace this part at least once a month, and there are barely any Fiats on the road here. I called their customer satisfaction center and they said they are "sorry for the inconvenience" and cannot provide any assistance in the matter. The inconvenience, specifically, is: that this part is a known problem, that the entire mirror needs replaced and the door will need be disassembled to complete that work, that the mirror isn't provided in the color of the car so there is also painting involved, and the total cost is around $2,000. The part itself is just a little $10 bit, but because of the ridiculousness involved in this faulty part, the cost is bombastically high. So, that leaves me waiting for a part that is in short supply because they need replaced constantly, and having to drive in extreme heat until it's fixed. No one should have to pay thousands of dollars or die of heat stroke because of a faulty, tiny, $10 sensor.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-07
  • VIN: ZFBCFXBT8GP
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The day after we had a bad storm, my car's electrical system went haywire. I was driving to work and all kinds of warning lights started flashing. Then when I came to a stop sign, stopped, then proceed to go again the car car would not go. I was still in drive but the car would not go when I pressed the pedal. So I put the car in park then back in drive and it started driving again. Then a warning came on about my power steering. I get further down the road to a stop light. I stopped and when the light turned green it would not go again while it drive. So I put it in park and back in drive and it went.i get to a stop sign about 1 mile down the road and my steering wheel locked up. So I put the car in park and back in drive and it started turning a little bit so I was able to pull off the road into an abandoned parking lot. I tried to turn the car off and it would not turn off. So I unhooked the battery cable and it cut off. I had the car towed to my house. They hooked the cables back up yo get the car onto the tow truck. Once the car was home, the wheel was fine but it had some warning messages on the dashboard. So the next day it rained again. And I went outside later that evening and my tail lights and the dashboard was illuminated. My air conditioner was running but the car was not crank. So I finally got it to the shop and they are saying water got into the RHA hub; but how? I don't have a leak in my car. I've never seen water in my car and on top of that, why is my RHA hub in the trunk? Anyway, after that I looked it up and come to find out a lot of people with Fiats have been having the same problem. And they are just as upset and lost as I am.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-25
  • VIN: ZFBCFXBT0GP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The drivers door is defective and will not open from the outside. Upon request the inspection has a cost of upwards of $1000 and customers who drive Fiat 500x models across the US have reported this as an issue. This becomes a safety problem as if there were to be a major accident, I would not be able to be rescued through the door unless I open it through the inside. This is particularly a problem if I were to have a medical emergency. There were no warnings that appeared until this door suddenly would just not open. Additionally, this is a commonly reported issue, as was confirmed to me in person at the dealership, through online forums, and through a customer support chat attached below.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: ZFBCFYETXGP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My car spontaneously shifts from driving to neutral while I am actively driving it. This has happened at least a half dozen times so far. Each time this has happened I cannot get my car to continue driving, since it’s shifted to neutral all by itself and stuck there. I have to come to a complete stop, put my car in park, turn the engine off, and then turn it back on again. This has happened for the last year and is happening more and more frequently. The latest incident was 4/1/2024. I talked to the Fiat dealership and they said it looks like my car should have been included in a Transmission issue recall that was assigned to 2016 Fiat 500X cars, but for some reason it wasn’t assigned to my specific VIN.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • VIN: ZFBCFYET5GP
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car had a NTSB recall on the engine. The engine needed to be replaced. After having the engine replaced I was told to pick up the vehicle which shook profusely and then had a check engine light come on only minutes from driving away from the dealership. I turn around and returned the vehicle immediately to have it remedy the situation. It took over a month and the second time I was told to pick up the car, the same thing happened again only minutes from leaving the dealership, except this time the engine started to stutter like it was going to stall. After another month of them attempting to remedy, which is now the 3rd time they told me to pick up the vehicle which was in 22nd December 2023, the engine stalled only 100 yards of driving away from the dealership in fast 2-lane traffic. The progressive deterioration of the new replaced engine after the required recall was and is clearly a danger not only to myself and my family but also to other drivers. They are now saying which is 13 of February 2024 over a month of them trying to fix it, that the car is ready to be picked up. I do not believe this vehicle is safe to be on the road. I am concerned for myself and other drivers safety if I attempt to drive this vehicle. I have been told it has been tested but they said that the other 3 times I have picked up the vehicle. There is no way to ensure or guarantee this vehicle will not stall again in dangerous traffic. I have a video of the incident with the foreman mechanic trying to start the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-30
  • VIN: ZFBCFXBTXGP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2016 Fiat 500X started but would not turn off. I’ve had to get it towed out of work, my batter has died from it being on all night and a day as well. Ive had to get my coworkers to help me out and take my home after it died. The only signal I got prior was a keyless entry. I changed the batter on my key and nothing worked! I would not drive my car far in fear that it would do this far from my job or home! Dealer says that the RF Module is bad due to water leaking into the car. Dealer says that the RF module and another module needs replaced and possibly the two key FOBS will have to be replaced if the current keys do not sync up with the new RF module. I even had my battery replaced that day I went to the dealer. Thought that would help and it did for a bit.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: ZFBCFYBT9GP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: April 2023 - While driving at ~ 35mph multiple warning light on the dashboard came on, (including traction control, AWD needs service, drive mode unavailable, emergency brake and several others) the speedometer stopped working (both the digital and analog) and a sluggish sensation was immediate (like the brakes were applied rapidly.) The car was stopped and further investigation showed that the rear brake lights were on, seemingly indicating that the brakes were engaged while the car was in park, with no one in the vehicle. The car would not shut off. The car was taken to the dealership where over 30 codes were reported. 2 sensors were replaced (one brake sensor and the traction sensor) and the dealership reported that multiple updates were performed in the 2 weeks that they had the car. Five weeks after getting the car back from the dealership the SAME condition occurred on the highway at 55mph, in a construction zone with no ability to pull off. After reaching an area where it was safe to pull off, a restart of the car (by disconnecting the battery) had all of the lights going off and the brakes functioning normally. The car was driven straight to the dealership where the issues happened again. The car now has 43 codes. They replaced the HCU/ABS module, which did not fix the issue. The car has been in the service department for 3 weeks without discovering the cause of the lights, lack of speedometer and deceleration.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-06
  • VIN: ZFBCFXBT5GP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My low pressure oil light continues to pop on and off. My pressure is reading very low numbers and not the required number needed for the oil to reach the top of the pump. The dealership replaced the censor on the car and it continues to pop up. This issue has been confirmed by the dealership advisor that it can be internal with my motor and continues to say it is not covered under the motor recall that was previously done in 2021 on my car. I have spoken with Mopar representative and they have stated that I have a 2 year warranty and that my current issue falls under the guidelines for motor recall. The component has not been inspected by the manufacturer. My oil has been changed and it is full. This is a safety concern because if I am driving my car and something happens to the motor or if the motor locks up while driving, I will severely be injured after i have explained to the dealership my concerns.

Negative Fiat 500x 2016 car reviews

  1. Johann Schimmel 2024-11-19

Although I was initially excited to get this car due to its cool looks and nice features, I have unfortunately been disappointed with its quality. The excessive road noise, loose and rattling sunroof, and moldy air conditioner unit have been persistent issues that have made it difficult to enjoy long road trips. Despite my attempts to address these issues, Chrysler has denied any problems and I have been stuck with this car. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car or Chrysler in general.

  2. Brian O'Hara 2024-11-11

I confidently owned the Fiat 500 L, which was unfortunately totalled. However, I walked away from the crash unscathed, which is a testament to the car's safety features. Despite encountering some issues with my previous car, I still considered the 500 X due to its affordable price and impressive accessories. During my experience with the 500 X as a rental car, I noticed some minor issues with the engine and back-up camera, despite it only having 4000 miles on it. I had to replace the back-up camera at 15000 miles and the brakes at 20000 miles. I hope this information proves useful.

  3. Arnoldo Howell 2024-10-02

I bought my first car, a Fiat 500x, on October 26th, 2015. Unfortunately, the very next day, the car stalled and began smoking. The Electric E-Brake turned on, making it impossible to move the car from the street. To make matters worse, the steering wheel completely locked up, even though the car had only 81 miles on it. It took two hours for the tow truck to arrive and remove the car. The dealer it was sent to took two days to get back to me, which was past the 48-hour return policy. They informed me that a rod had shot through the engine, and that they needed to order a new engine for my new car. It took two weeks for the engine to arrive, and another week to have it put in. After the engine was installed, they tested the car and found that a new fuse and starter were needed to make it run. It took another week and a half to receive and install these parts. During a thorough test-drive, they noticed stalling on turns, which turned out to be caused by a faulty air intake valve. It was frustrating to have a new car in the shop for over 4 weeks, but the dealer worked hard to fix all the issues and make sure the car was in working order. Finally, on December 4th, 2015, I received a call that my car was ready to be picked up. When I arrived at the dealership, the employees at the service center expressed their gratitude for my patience and understanding throughout the entire process. Although I had to call the dealership multiple times for updates, the woman I was dealing with was always friendly and helpful. The dealership even called me a few times to check on the car after I picked it up. While I did have some frustrations with the company, overall, I had a positive experience with the dealership. I would recommend them to others.

  4. Immanuel Pagac 2024-09-04

I have been asked to update my review. While I still have some concerns about the car, such as it stalling out a couple of times after warming up and being sluggish, I do want to mention that the gas mileage is okay. However, it is not as good as my Chevrolet HHR. Overall, I would not recommend this car to anyone. Additionally, I noticed that my girlfriend was uncomfortable during the ride, which made me feel apologetic.

  5. Thad Quitzon 2024-07-20

I am extremely dissatisfied with this car due to its faulty electronics. While driving in the rain, the electronics malfunction causing the airbags and power steering to disable, making it difficult to stop the car. Despite having taken it to the shop multiple times, the issue remains unresolved. This last time, the malfunction occurred on a busy road, which was a concerning situation. It is imperative that this issue is addressed before any serious harm is caused.

Positive Fiat 500x 2016 car reviews

  1. Maxine Wolf 2024-09-09

Leased the due to reliability concerns bit so far, no problems. Love the styling. The optional two tone dash and seats are awesome - retro feel and fun. Only con is gas mileage. City driver here and averaging 20mpg. Would expect much better from a new car but pros offset this.

  2. Wilford Ortiz 2024-07-20

Congratulations on your growing family! I can understand how difficult it must have been to trade in your Abarth for a more family-friendly car. However, it's great to hear that you're starting to like your new 500x, especially with the improved 6-speed manual transmission. The clutch sounds like a dream to shift, making driving a breeze. It's also good to know that the car has a spacious interior and a big trunk. I agree that having a CD player would be a nice addition, but it's great to hear that the car is fuel-efficient even with premium gas. Overall, it sounds like the 500x is a great choice for anyone looking for a manual car with plenty of room. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The market for compact/subcompact crossovers isn't too crowded, but there are still plenty of options available. I did my research on various brands, including Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Kia, and Buick, both online and in-person, test driving each one before finally deciding on a Fiat 500X. It was a tough decision since I was looking for a previously owned vehicle, but luckily I found a discounted demo that was fully loaded after four months of searching and haven't looked back since. Although the transmission is a bit quirky, it only took me a couple of weeks to find the right balance between hesitancy and jackrabbit starts. The braking at low speeds is also touchy, but once you get used to the system, it's not a problem. Despite these minor issues, I'm still thrilled by the nimbleness of the X. Passing at highway speeds is a breeze, and the entertainment/communications/navigation/electronic control panel is everything I could ask for. The ride is firm, but the X handles real issues in the road (e.g., railroad tracks, speed bumps) with ease. After a month, I still wake up excited to get behind the wheel. The X has so much style and is so much fun to drive! Update: Our relationship is now celebrating its half-year anniversary, and we are still honeymooning. We recently experienced our first significant frozen precipitation event, and my baby sat it out in the driveway. I don't drive on ice, and that's not why I bought the car. The X handles the narrow, twisting, hilly roads of my neighborhood with ease even in normal driving mode when there is no ice, and that's all I ask. One-year Update: Now that I've owned the car for a year, I have to say that I didn't appreciate the significant decline in value of the car. In one year, the value has declined by one-third. However, I'm still satisfied with my purchase overall.

This is a smaller version of an American crossover that can handle most of your needs without any extra features. While it may not be able to tow heavy equipment or move large furniture, the turbocharged multi-air four and six-speed manual in the Pop form can get you where you need to go with ease. The seats are comfortable, but the rear seats may be a bit cramped. The handling is quite good, although the Fiat 500 Pop would outperform it. The Pop 1.4L 6MT is a fun car to drive, with good road manners, decent acceleration, and a lack of infotainment bells and whistles. While accessories could be more reasonably priced and the 1.4L multi-air engine requires premium gas, there is still much to like about this car. After nine months of ownership, the Fiat 500X was involved in a car/deer collision and was a total loss. The airbags worked as designed, although the knee airbag left a palm-sized bruise on my right leg and the passenger airbag broke the windshield.Lost substantial money to depreciation, though my insurance company was completely transparent and efficient throughout. I replaced the Fiat 500X with a 2014 Ford C-Max Energi that I like very much. UPDATE: After four years of ownership, I traded my Fiat 500 in for the Ford C-Max above and now have zero Fiats in my garage. I am living happily ever after. Would I buy another Fiat? No. FCA will always be the quirky Italian cousin everyone talks about, but nobody takes seriously. That is a shame. UPDATE: I am still Fiat-free, and a used Fiat 500 Pop 6M is a rare vehicle indeed. It still doesn't command much of a price on the used market, but it is very difficult to find. I have no plans to add a Fiat to my garage, but I am coveting a new Ford Ranger or Bronco. UPDATE: The algorithm does not understand why I have not updated my review of a car(s) I have not owned in years, so this is an 'update' of sorts. The Fiat 500X in the manual configuration has become a unicorn in the used car market and is just about impossible to find. Fiat's days in the USA are numbered, I'm afraid, but there is nothing to be done about that in an insane locked-down world, where the inmates are running the asylum. Fasten your seat belt, it's going to get rough out there. UPDATE: Fall 2020. The algorithm still does not know that I no longer own any Fiats, and even the Ford CMax has been sold to a Ford dealer (for trade-in value). The state decided PHEVs were not paying enough gas tax and bumped the tag fee much higher, so I got inspired and no longer own the CMax PHEV. I am pleased with my Ford Focus, 6M ecoboost three-cylinder sedan, though the 2020 Ford Edge Titanium 2.0L may replace it next summer because its 8-speed automatic and larger size are attractive.

I'm 58 years old and have a chronic pain condition. Recently, I started a new job with a longer commute and my old car was not ergonomic, causing pain in my hip and back. As a practical person, I have always stuck with Hondas and Toyotas. However, I decided to look for a new car with a comfortable, power adjustable seat. During my search, I test drove several cars including Honda, Toyota, VW, and Chevy. Just for fun, I stopped by the Fiat dealer, which I passed every day on my way home. The 500 was adorable but uncomfortable for me. The salesman suggested I look at the 500x and when I test drove it, it had the most comfortable seat I had ever tried. Despite my bias against Fiat, I went back for a second test drive and it was still the most comfortable seat I had tried. It turned out to be right in my price range and I've had it for 2 months now and still love it. My back pain has improved and everyone comments on how much they love my car. Although there are a couple of drawbacks, such as sluggish acceleration when the weather and engine are cold, and the auto transmission upshifts at 2000 RPM instead of 2500, I can live with those issues. I think Fiat should market to seniors as this car is extremely easy to get in and out of and is not too low or high. It's nice to have a stylish car that meets my practical needs at the same time, especially since many of the Hondas, Toyotas, etc. are downright ugly this year with huge black grills and weird angles that make them look like a monster.I used to think that I hated driving because of my back pain, but now I absolutely love it! Plus, I'm getting great gas mileage - up to 36 mpg on the freeway with no traffic.
