2014 Hyundai Sonata hybrid problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2014 Hyundai Sonata hybrid problems
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2014 has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues span across various components of the car, including the electrical system, engine, climate system, and seat belts.
One of the most common problems is related to the electrical system, with 175 complaints filed with the NHTSA. Drivers have reported faulty exterior lighting, with headlights that burn out frequently, arc, and short-circuit almost inexplicably. These issues seem to crop up just after Hyundai’s 60,000-mile warranty expires, and fixing them can be frustrating and costly. Additionally, drivers have complained about the car turning off for no reason and then restarting, or refusing to restart after being turned off.
Another significant issue is related to the steering wheel, which can become difficult or impossible to control due to a coupling linkage on the steering column that is made of plastic and wears down over time. This problem can occur well before the 100,000-mile mark, making some owners wary of driving their vehicles at all.
The drivetrain of the 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has also been plagued by recalls that pose a serious risk for passengers. Complaints concerning steering and electrical issues that crop up after only 75,000 miles have made some owners wary of driving their vehicles at all.
The climate system is another area where owners have reported problems. Complaints include the AC not functioning well, the blower (fan) motor not working, and the condenser line having cracks that need to be replaced. These issues can be particularly problematic during hot weather, making the car uncomfortable to drive.
Lastly, the seat belts in the 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid have also been a source of concern. The NHTSA has investigated a defect in the seat belt linkages and pretensioner, which could release in a crash if they aren’t properly reconnected during maintenance. This issue poses a significant safety risk to drivers and passengers.
In summary, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2014 has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include electrical system failures, steering wheel difficulties, drivetrain recalls, climate system malfunctions, and seat belt defects. While the car has many positive attributes, these problems are significant enough to warrant consideration before purchasing.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-01
- VIN: KMHEC4A42EA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING 20 MPH STRAIGHT DOWN A FLAT RESIDENTAL STREET. A LOUD DASH ALARM SOUNDED IN MY 2014 HYUNDAI SONADA HYBRID. THE DASH DISPLAYED "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING, SAFELY STOP AND DO NOT DRIVE" . BELOW THE WARNING A YELLOW CAUTION TRIANGLE DISPLAYED. I ATTEMPTED TO GIVE THE VEHICLE GAS, SO I COULD PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT THE ENGINE ACTED LIKE IT HAD NO POWER. A BLINKING GREEN "READY" LIGHT WAS DISPLAYED. THE ECO GUIDE DISPLAY WAS MOVING UP AND DOWN FROM THE TOP TO BOTTOM. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND BEGAN BRAKING. THE BRAKES FELT MUSHY AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT STOPPING. WITHIN A FEW SECONDS THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND WAS THE ENGINE WAS REVVING UP AND DOWN BUT LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GEAR. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 10-15 SECONDS, I LOST THE POWER STEERING AND THE IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I AGAIN TRIED BRAKING BUT THE BRAKES JUST FELT MUSHY AND WERE NOT STOPPING THE VEHICLE. I CONTINUED COASTING DOWN THE ROAD AND EVENTUALLY USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED I SHUT IT OFF AND ATTEMPTED TO STARTED THE VEHICLE AGAIN. THE GREEN "READY" LIGHT DISPLAYED ON THE DASH AS WELL AS THE WARNING LIGHTS. THE VEHICLE WOULD TURN ON BUT NOT START AGAIN. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND HAD SEVERAL PEOPLE PUSH ME TO THE CURBSIDE. THE BRAKES WERE VERY MUSHY AND ALMOST NON-EXISTENT. I AGAIN USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP IT. I NOTIFIED MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER AND ADVISED I WOULD BE TOWING THE VEHICLE TO THEM. I HAD JUST CAME OFF THE FREEWAY AND HAD THIS HAPPENED A FEW MINUTES EARLIER, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY. I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. IT WAS LITERALLY TERRIFYING TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE THE WAY THIS OCCURRED. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OF AN ISSUE AND NOT ENOUGH TIME TO REACT ONCE THE WARNING SYMBOL WAS DISPLAYED.

PULL OVER AND DO NOT DRIVE." THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE AND CAME TO A STOP. HAD TO RESTART THE CAR. THE SAME WARNING HAPPENED AGAIN THE FOLLOWING DAY WHILE IN MOTION GOING 50MPH. HAD TO GET OUT OF THE ROADWAY AND RESTART THE CAR. HYUNDAI REPLACED THE ENTIRE ENGINE UNDER MANUFACTURER WARRANTY (TOOK ABOUT 5 MONTHS). UPON RECEIVING VEHICLE BACK, THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST 10 MINS OF DRIVING IT (ISSUE NOT FIXED). IT IS BACK AT THE HYUNDAI SERVICE CENTER AWAITING REPAIR.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-01-10
- VIN: KMHEC4A40EA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: 2 TIMES THE ENGINE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION DUE TO HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE. A SIMPLE FUSE FOR THE HYBRID SYSTEM WENT OUT AND TURNED OFF ALL POWER. THE MAIN ISSUE IS THAT THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW. OTHER HYBRID VEHICLES HAVE A SAFETY FEATURE THAT WHEN THE HYBRID SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING THE GASOLINE ENGINE WILL STILL BE IN FULL OPERATION. EVERYTIME THE ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON IT KILLS THE WHOLE CAR. I GOT STUCK ON AN EXPRESSWAY AND WAS PUT IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN THIS DID NOT HAVE TO HAPPEN BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TO MAKE THE 2 MOTORS COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON EACH OTHER. HAVING THE GASOLINE ENGINE CONTINUE TO RUN AND BE ABLE TO POWER THE CAR IN A HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE WILL SAVE SOMEONE'S LIFE. I AM NOT SURE WHY THIS IS NOT A REQUIREMENT BY LAW TO HAVE THIS SAFETY FEATURE
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-04
- VIN: KMHEC4A45EA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AS IF THE BRAKE PEDAL WERE DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. AFTER ATTEMPTING TO RESTART THE VEHICLE A FEW TIMES, THE FAILURE WENT AWAY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED SPORADICALLY FOR A MONTH AND WAS BECOMING WORSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-09-01
- VIN: KMHEC4A47EA
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THIS EVENT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING AND HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES DURING ONE SHORT TRIP UNTIL I PARKED THE CAR DUE TO THE DANGER OF DRIVING IT. WHILE DRIVING, YOU GET AN ALARM SOUND AND DASH INDICATION AND THE CAR JUST DIES. YOU THEN MUST PULL OVER QUICKLY AND STOP. WHILE STOPPING IN THIS CONDITION, THE BRAKES SOUND TERRIBLE LIKE THEY ARE GRINDING HORRIBLY BUT DO STOP THE CAR. IF YOU PUSH THE BUTTON TO SHUT OFF THE CAR AND THEN PUSH IT TO RESTART, THEN THE FAULT CLEARS AND THE CAR DRIVES NORMALLY UNTIL IT OCCURS ALL OVER AGAIN. MY WIFE SAID IT HAD BEEN HAPPENING OCCASIONALLY BUT NEVER SEVERAL TIMES DURING ONE SHORT TRIP. SHE HAD ALREADY TAKEN IT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND THAT IT WAS A HYDRAULIC SENSOR IN HE THE HYDRAULIC PACK THAT WOULD BE SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPLACE. THEY THEN ASSURED HER THAT THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. THEY LATER STATED THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE CAR WAS SHUTTING OFF AND THAT THEY THOUGHT THAT IT WAS ONLY A DASH TROUBLE LIGHT. THIS ISSUE PUTS THE DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION AS IT HAPPENED TO US SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. WE PARKED THE CAR AFTER THIS ONE TRIP AND STARTED DRIVING A BACKUP CAR UNTIL WE COULD GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES, BUT I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE ABOUT 36K MILES. IT STARTED MAKING A FUNNY NOISE AT THAT TIME BUT DIDN'T AFFECT THE CAR IN ANY WAY AND THE DEALER ASSURED US THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR THE CAR EVEN THOUGH THE NEW CARS DIDN'T MAKE THIS NOISE. RAY SKILLMAN HYUNDAI SOUTH SIDE IN INDIANAPOLIS HAS SINCE "FIXED" THIS ISSUE AS A GOODWILL FAVOR, BUT WE JUST GOT IT BACK AND HAVEN'T DRIVEN IT ENOUGH TO KNOW WHETHER IT IS TRULY CORRECTED. THANKS FOR LOOKING INTO THIS. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY ACCIDENTS BECAUSE [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).' *PM

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-04-15
- VIN: KMHEC4A46EA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED A LITTLE MORE RAPIDLY OR HARDER THAN NORMAL THERE IS A SHORT GRUMBLE NOISE. THIS NOISE HAS NO RELATIONSHIP TO CAR SPEED AS IT WILL MAKE THIS SAME NOISE IF THE CAR ISN'T MOVING OR AT ANY SPEED. THE BRAKES FEEL AND OPERATE NORMALLY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE NOISE THEY MAKE. I HAVE TOLD TWO DIFFERENT SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND BEEN TOLD THIS NOISE IS NORMAL ON ALL THE SONATA HYBRID CARS. IN THE TWO YEARS AND 19,000 MILES THE NOISE REMAINS THE SAME, NO LESS OR MORE. EVEN IF THE CAR ISN'T ON PUSHING ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE IT WILL MAKE THE NOISE THREE OR FOUR TIMES. THE CAR HAS DONE THIS SINCE NEW.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-02
- VIN: KMHEC4A42EA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID STARTS OFF VERY SLOWLY WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC AND THEN LAUNCHES FORWARD ONCE THE GAS MOTOR STARTS. MY CONCERN IS THAT I'M GOING TO GET REAR ENDED WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF THE SLOW START OR I'LL LOSE CONTROL AS IT LAUNCHES FORWARD. EITHER WAY, I DON'T FEEL SAFE. THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED IT FROM SAID THAT IT'S "NORMAL" AND THAT "ALL HYBRIDS PERFORM THAT WAY". I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE. I'VE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THEY REFUSE TO HELP AND CONTINUE TO IGNORE MY COMPLAINTS. THIS VEHICLE, I BELIEVE, IS UNSAFE FOR ME, MY FAMILY, AND FOR OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. I WOULDN'T DRIVE IT, BUT I HAVE NO OTHER CAR AND I NEED TO GET TO WORK.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

CAUSING DAMAGE ON THE FRONT BUMPER, HOOD, AND PASSENGER SIDE FENDER. THE CONCERN IS THAT DESPITE THIS IMPACT NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE ESTIMATED BY AN INSURANCE APPROVED COLLISON REPAIR CENTER TO BE IN EXCESS OF $9000. ADDITIONALLY THE SEAT BELT RESTRAINT DID NOT LOCK UPON IMPACT. ONLY MINOR INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED SUCH AS WHIPLASH AND A BUMPED HEAD. THESE INJURIES WERE NOT DOCUMENTED, YET I DO FEEL THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO MENTION THEM FOR GENERAL PUBLIC AWARENESS AND A GENUINE CONCERN FOR MY FELLOW DRIVERS.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-06
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KMHEC4A45EA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I PURCHASED SKY BLUE 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID LIMITED ON AUGUST 31ST, 2014. I DROVE THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS, DURING THIS TIME I NOTICED AND FELT WHEN I BRAKED THE CAR DID NOT STOP IMMEDIATELY, THERE WAS A DELAYED EFFECT. AT THIS TIME THE BREAK LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I CHECKED THE MANUAL WHICH INDICATED THE CAR CANNOT BE DRIVEN IN THIS STATE AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR IN FOR A CHECKUP AND SERVICE TO DEALERSHIP ON SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2014 SO THAT THE ILLUMINATED BREAK LIGHT COULD BE CHECKED. THE TECHNICIAN SPENT FIVE DAYS ON THE CAR AND DISCOVERED LOW BRAKE FLUID LEVEL ON A BRAND NEW VEHICLE WITH 637 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE CAUSE REASON IS: LOOSE FITTING. " LOW BRAKE FLUID LEVEL ON A BRAND NEW VEHICLE WITH 637 MILES" I HAD A FURTHER SERVICE ON THE VEHICLE AT DEALERSHIP ON DECEMBER 27TH 2014 FOR HAVING 3500 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I REQUESTED A DETAILED BRAKE CHECK DUE TO THE EARLIER ISSUE BUT THEY ASSURED ME IT HAD BEEN MADE CORRECTION. ON JANUARY 6TH 2015 I HAD JUST PICKED UP MY SON FROM PRESCHOOL AND WAS HEADED TO MCDONALDS TO BUY MY SON LUNCH. MY SPEED WAS 30 MPH IN A 55 MPH SPEED ZONE. I REMEMBERED VERY VIVIDLY APPLYING THE BRAKES; THE CAR JUST DID NOT STOP AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED WITH SUFFICIENT TIME AND SEVERITY BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT REACT OR STOP. MY FEELING IS THAT THE BRAKE LIGHT INCIDENT WAS THE PRECURSOR TO AN ALLEGEDLY DEFECTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM WHICH COULD BE AN INHERENT DEFECT ALLEGEDLY. *TR

When using the remote starter to warm up the car in the winter, the car doesn't warm up because it always starts in hybrid mode. As you may know, the heater works with the hot water of the engine, so if the engine doesn't start, the water never warms up. I let the dealer know about this issue, but unfortunately, they didn't do anything about it. It's frustrating that a car that costs $30,000 can't keep you warm in the winter. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or solutions to this problem.

Just back from a 600 KM trip. Your average mileage was 5.3L/100Km, which is fantastic! It feels like you're playing a video game when driving, doesn't it? So smooth, comfy and you're saving money on gas for sure. I love the looks too - the blue inlay on the silver metallic looks great and heads turn. :)

I just purchased a Sonata hybrid with the leather package in Pearl White. It is absolutely the greatest hybrid! I love how it looks inside and out. Anywhere I look at this vehicle, it makes me smile. Hyundai really did an excellent job of making this vehicle. I can't wait to drive it again!

I'm so glad you're enjoying your car! It sounds like you made a great choice after test driving the Optima and Camry hybrids. The assembly and ride are both very nice, and there's plenty of room for you at 6'3

I recently purchased a 2012 Sonata Hybrid and have been driving it on both local roads and highways. It's currently averaging 36mpg, which is decent, although I was hoping for 40mpg on the highway. The car has a great interior and beautiful exterior, and the ride is very comfortable. Overall, I'm really enjoying it. I'm hoping that the mileage will improve after the first oil change, but I'm not entirely sure. Regardless, 36mpg is still a decent mileage compared to other cars.

I purchased a brand new 2013 Sonata Hybrid Ltd and have been driving it for 18 months. Having driven many different brands in the past, including BMW, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota, GM, Nissan, and Ford, I have found that this car could use some improvement in terms of driving dynamics. It tends to rock back and forth and nose dive too much on road imperfections and during braking. Additionally, the gas pedal is not as responsive as I would like, which can be concerning when trying to clear an intersection at orange lights. The braking can also be a bit harsh at first, but then fades to being less effective when pressed hard. I have also experienced some creaking in the panoramic roof, despite the dealer's attempts to fix it. Finally, I have found the seats to be uncomfortable on trips longer than 2 hours. While the car is not the most fuel-efficient, it still gets the job done. Overall, I think there is room for improvement, but I still enjoy driving my Sonata Hybrid Ltd.

There is a recall on the engine, but don't worry, it has great gas mileage. I understand how annoying it can be when the cup holder hits your leg on the door panel.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it for its great gas mileage and for the first 3 years, I was getting an impressive 40mpg. However, recently I've noticed that it has dropped to 30mpg and I'm not sure what's causing it. I've taken it to the dealer, but unfortunately, they don't seem to know what's wrong either. They haven't been very helpful and I'm a bit disappointed. I'm considering getting a new SUV that can give me the same gas mileage as my current car. I've been looking at Subarus and I think that might be a good option for me. I've decided to avoid hybrids this time around. Thanks for listening!

I recently received a notice that my 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid may be subject to a recall due to a known issue that could cause the vehicle to burst into flames. When I contacted the dealership to inquire about a recall, I was informed that they have not yet found a solution to the problem. While I was initially not too concerned, my daughter's brother-in-law informed me that his sister's 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid burst into flames while she was driving on the freeway. This issue hits close to home for me and my family. I believe that Hyundai should recall the affected vehicles built in the Alabama plant and replace the faulty parts with new ones based on the successes of other plants. If my car is at risk of bursting into flames, I do not feel comfortable driving it until a solution is found. I urge Hyundai to take this issue seriously and prioritize the safety of their customers. Thank you for your attention to this matter.Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Hyundai Sonata. As someone who relies on their car for transportation, safety is a top priority for me. I did notice that Hyundai is keeping a close eye on the guarantees for cars with over 90,000 miles. However, I have high expectations for my Sonata, given its reputation for longevity. I'm concerned that if I exceed 90,000 miles, Hyundai may not take responsibility for any issues that arise. I believe that the problem with the Alabama plant is something that Hyundai needs to address, and I hope they will take action to fix these cars and ensure their safety. Thank you for listening to my concerns.

I bought this car to replace my 2011 regular Sonata that was unfortunately written off in an accident. I saw this as an opportunity to take advantage of the potential fuel savings, given that I have a daily commute of 110 kms. However, I must say that I was disappointed with the results. My 2011 Sonata averaged 31mpg, while my hybrid only averaged 35 mpg. I did a comparison of my fuel expenses and mileage over a 26000km period and found that I only saved approximately 198 litres. Based on today's gas prices of 1.14.9, this translates to an annualized savings of $227.00. Over a 5 year period, the savings are nowhere close to the $5,000 premium I paid to purchase a hybrid.
