2009 Dodge Caliber problems

The Dodge Caliber is a compact hatchback manufactured and marketed by Chrysler's Dodge division from the 2007 through 2012 model years, replacing the Dodge Neon and Chrysler PT Cruiser.
Following the Caliber concept, which debuted at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the pre-production version debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, with a market launch in March 2006.
The Caliber was manufactured at the Belvidere Assembly (Illinois) plant, and across its six-year model run, just over 400,000 were produced.

Common 2009 Dodge Caliber problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2009 Dodge Caliber, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Problems:
- Owners have reported issues such as random slowdowns, stalling, idling, or sudden shutdowns while driving. These problems can be caused by various factors like dirty or clogged fuel injectors, failed catalytic converters, or faulty fuel systems. A thorough cleaning of the fuel system components and regular maintenance checks are recommended to address these issues.
- CVT Transmission Failure:
- Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) failure is a common problem with the Dodge Caliber. Owners have experienced issues with the transmission system, leading to difficulties in shifting gears or complete transmission failure. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are crucial to prevent major transmission issues.
- Leaky Draining Tubes:
- Another common problem reported by Dodge Caliber owners is leaky draining tubes. These tubes are responsible for draining water away from the vehicle, and when they leak, it can lead to water accumulation inside the car, causing potential damage to the interior. Ensuring these tubes are properly maintained and replacing them if necessary can prevent water-related issues.
These common problems with the 2009 Dodge Caliber highlight the importance of regular maintenance, thorough inspections, and prompt repairs to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

Why did the Dodge Caliber fail?
In a nutshell, it was poor sales. The Caliber didn't have any strong attributes and didn't compete well. Also, the majority of the industry was producing mostly SUV's, and the Caliber was in an odd position, between a compact FWD compact with a type of crossover back end. There was simply no market for it.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-17
- VIN: 1b3hb48a39d
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: It started as a popping noise while driving which evolved into a louder sound and I was able to feel it click with my feet as I was driving, and I couldn't pinpoint exactly what was causing the issue at first. After going to a mechanics and having them look at it the subframe of the car was absolutely covered in rust to the point where it was falling apart and I could see inside. The air conditioning unit was badly designed, and the residual water from that caused the entire thing to rust. They advised that it was only going to get worse and could lead to the front axle essentially just falling out and totaling the car anyways. I drive everyday to and from work so having this issue is severely affecting my daily life and quite possibly my safety if anything happens while driving it.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-11-13
- VIN: 1B3HB28AX9D
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The problem initially occurred in early November of 2020 when the vehicle would unpredictably stall at a stop sign or traffic light and would not immediately start for a couple minutes. After this short wait of 1 to 3 minutes it was possible to restart the car and move forward normally and the car could be driven without stalling for 2 or 3 miles when it would stall again and the engine would not start again for 2 to 3 minutes. In traffic situations this was unsafe to not be able to move the vehicle to a safe distance from heavy traffic. Finally, the problem started to occur after the vehicle was supposedly repaired and not driven for 2 -3 days and when it an attempt to start the car it would idle for 3-5 seconds and sound like it was choking before dying, and this was happening 2 weeks after it had been "repaired" by the Dodge dealer. This problem has repeatedly occurred over the two years since the original incident and has been to a Dodge dealership for unsuccessful repairs 4 different times; 11/20; 04/22 &05/22 and it is still at the dealership being inoperable. Each time the car functioned for a few miles and then broke down again. The dealer informs us that the parts that would most likely repair the car are no longer made by Dodge and the car cannot be fixed. Interestingly enough this model vehicle has had a variety of recalls starting in 2007 but never for the particular control modules that are no longer available which are The Throttle control & Power Train Control modules, which the Dealer thinks might possibly be a fix but even that is not a sure thing. The Dodge dealer that worked on the vehicle presumably would have informed me about this situation at least before they had the vehicle in for now the 4th time in 3 years with the same problem with no solution. Up to the time of these breakdowns the vehicle was well maintained and taken care of and still has low mileage of just over 69,000 miles. Is the Dodge Corporation at least partially liable?

I bought this car brand new and have now driven it for approximately 224,000 miles. The first 180,000 miles went pretty smoothly with general maintenance, other than a $580.00 repair to a sensor at 122,000 miles. Since then, I have had to replace the front struts, controlling arms, a couple of tie rods, and a ball joint. At 215,000 miles, I had to replace the clutch and manual transmission. Despite these repairs, there are many things I like about this car. Firstly, the gas mileage is great. I get 33 mpg on the highway and 26 in the city, even though I travel up five miles of an interstate mountain every day. Secondly, I like the cargo space and carrying capacity. Many times, I have packed my 225 lb frame with my wife and three kids, 2 dogs, and luggage on a four-hour trip to grandma's house. I have put water heaters, washers and dryers, and even a full-size stove and small refrigerator in the back without having to tie down the hatch. One time, I put 600lbs of gravel bags back there and the Caliber carried it with no problems. Thirdly, it drives and handles solid on relatively smooth roads, and has adequate hill climbing and passing abilities, but won't win any races. Fourthly, I like the front and back seat space and roominess. It is comfortable on long trips and my 6' 2-inch son fits well up front or in the back seat. Fifthly, the controls and knobs are easy to see and use. Sixthly, the sound system is powerful with great sound. Seventhly, there is lots of storage for smaller items, and I also like the built-in cooler and adjustable armrest for the driver. Lastly, the front-wheel drive does very well in snow and ice conditions. During one ice storm, I kept going while expensive four-wheel drives were going off the highway in ditches. I went down a mountain road in the same ice storm and simply downshifted to first gear and safely got home with others wrecking around me. However, there are also some things I don't like about this car, but let's focus on the positives for now!Once things started to break, everything seemed to go wrong at once. I ended up spending around $4000 to repair everything. The suspension is a weak area of this car, but I managed to get about 180,000 miles out of the original suspension, so I can't complain too much. The car rides smoothly on highways, but it can be a bit noisy on irregular and unpaved roads. However, I've gotten used to the noise and either ignore it or turn up the radio. There are lots of interior plastics that might bother some people, but they don't bother me. The car has several blind spots, especially in the back window, which can make backing up challenging, but I've gotten used to it over the last 11 years. Overall, I really like this car and feel like I've gotten my money's worth out of it. I'm going to keep driving it until the wheels fall off because of the great gas mileage and the versatility of the vehicle. It can do so many things that other cars in this class cannot do. I would definitely buy this model again. It's now 2022, and I have 236,000 miles on the car. The original alternator went out at 225,000 miles, and the original starter went at 226,000 miles. However, all of the steering parts, heater, air conditioning, water pump, belts, and hoses, and timing belt have not needed to be replaced, which has pleasantly surprised me. The engine and rebuilt manual transmission run great and strong. The car is good on brakes and tires, and I drive it every day to work.

We recently purchased a 09 RT caliber from a dealer and it was in great cosmetic condition. The car drove decently and the stereo was fantastic. We were able to get a fair price for it. Unfortunately, within just two weeks, the engine shut off and the lights on the dash went crazy, leaving us stranded. After some back-and-forth with the dealer, they found an aftermarket chip in the vehicle and convinced us to give it another try. We're so glad we did! They removed the chip and upgraded the car's computer software. While the acceleration was still marginal, we were able to improve it by using one bottle of Lucas gas treatment and replacing the plugs with Bosch platinum +4. Now, the car runs like it just came out of the factory and we plan on keeping it for a while.

I've only had this for about a month, but it's already the first vehicle that I truly love! I enjoy sitting higher up and the comfortable seats make for a great ride. The gas mileage is good, and I feel safe for the long term since I bought the lifetime warranty.
-
After turning in my Durango, I decided to opt for something smaller with better gas mileage. I always name my cars, and after taking this particular one for a spin, I found it to be so spunky for a 4 cylinder that I named it Spunky. It drives great, gets excellent gas mileage, and was the perfect purchase for me. In fact, within the first month of owning it, I took it on a road trip from PA to Williamsburg VA and back, and it only required one tank of gas each way. Despite having three rather large passengers, we all enjoyed the ride and the low cost.

I have almost 30,000 miles on my Caliber and it has been an excellent car. I have owned seven different Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products over the past 20 years, and they have been fantastic cars. Nice cars, great prices, and the reliability has been outstanding.

After 60k, things started to go downhill. Unfortunately, I've had to take the car to the shop twice a year for fuel system problems. It seems like the engine is too heavy for the suspension, which has made the car quite expensive to maintain. I would recommend considering other options.

This car may not be the best fit for everyone, but it has its perks. If you enjoy the occasional adventure and don't mind some extra expenses, this car could be a fun choice. By the way, I've decided to get the car painted lemon yellow instead of dreamy blue.
