1991 Dodge Daytona problems
The Dodge Daytona is an automobile which was produced by the Chrysler Corporation under their Dodge division from 1984 until 1993. It was a front-wheel drive hatchback based on the Chrysler G platform, which was derived from the Chrysler K platform. The Chrysler Laser was an upscale rebadged version of the Daytona. The Daytona was restyled for 1987, and again for 1992. It replaced the Mitsubishi Galant-based Challenger, and slotted between the Charger and the Conquest. The Daytona was replaced by the 1995 Dodge Avenger, which was built by Mitsubishi Motors. The Daytona derives its name mainly from the Dodge Charger Daytona, which itself was named after the Daytona 500 race in Daytona Beach, Florida.
History
The Daytona originally used the 2.2 L Chrysler K engine in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form. Power outputs are 93 and 142 hp (69 and 106 kW) respectively. The 100-horsepower (75 kW), 2.5-litre K engine was added for 1986. In 1985, the 2.2-L Turbo I engine's horsepower was increased to 146 hp (109 kW). The 1984 Daytona was available in three trim lines: standard, Turbo and Turbo Z. Total production was 49,347. The Daytona Turbo was on Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for 1984. Both the Daytona and Chrysler Laser were available with the Chrysler electronic voice alert system through 1987. A performance oriented "Shelby" version of the Daytona was introduced in 1987.
1984
The Daytona debuted with a 142 hp Turbo I motor. Many Turbo Z models were produced and were more luxurious than other years due to their use of Mark Cross leather, light up speakers, and rear amplifier switches. These options were dropped after 1984.

Why is the Dodge Daytona so rare?
The production run was designed to satisfy NASCAR's homologation requirement that at least 500 units be available to the public, and of the 503 produced only 70 cars received the 426ci Hemi V-8. Among them, even fewer—just 22—came with the four-speed A833 manual transmission. They are rare and fast cars indeed.
Why was the Dodge Daytona banned from Nascar?
Apparently, it was too fast for NASCAR's liking, and the evidence was there. As it turned out, Buddy Baker broke the speed record at the Talladega Superspeedway. Baker was the first driver to ever breach the 200mph barrier, and the Dodge Charger Daytona dominated several races.
What engine did the Daytona have?
The Daytona's original equipment is the stuff Mopar dreams are made of: a 375-horse 440 Magnum engine, Hemi-rated four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter, and the prized A34 Super Track Pak, which features a Sure-Grip Dana 60 rear end with 4.10:1 gears, viscous-drive fan, and dual-breaker distributor.
How fast is the Dodge Daytona?
99 Chrysler Engineering Dodge Charger Daytona, was the first driver in NASCAR history to break the 200 mph (322 km/h) mark, on March 24, 1970, at Talladega. The 1969 Dodge Daytona won two races in 1969 and another four in 1970, for a total of six.

What's so special about the Dodge Daytona?
One of the two famous aero-cars, the Dodge Daytona had featured special body modifications that included a 23-inch-tall (584 mm) stabilizer wing on the rear deck, a special sheet-metal "nose cone" that replaced the traditional upright front grille, a flush rear backlight (rear window area), a 'window cap' to cover the ...
Why are Dodge Daytonas so expensive?
Introduced in 1969 as a homologation special for NASCAR duty, the Dodge Charger Daytona was sold to the public in just 503 units. This car is fairly reliable and has sporty looks. It has good handling and looks great with ES ground effects. However, it looks a bit odd without them! I retired this car at 175K because the backseat (if you can call it that) is too small for my wife and baby daughter, and the car sits too low to the ground for them. Otherwise, it still runs great! Although my ES doesn't have the Overdrive Automatic (a historical trouble spot), the 3-speed auto transmission did fail at 120K. I have the same transmission in a '96 Voyager, and at 107K, it's starting to hiccup in the same manner. So, be sure to expect a transmission problem. However, I haven't had any problems with the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, except for injector/throttle cleaning and an EGR valve.

I am so impressed with this car! I bought it as a cheap backup, but it has exceeded all my expectations. Despite having 200,000 hard miles on it, it still drives like it's brand new. All the options still work perfectly, including the ice-cold air conditioning and solid cruise control. The interior is very comfortable and there isn't a single rattle in the body. The simple 2.5L, 5-speed engine is surprisingly quick and the car handles great. I did have to replace the radiator and O2 sensor, but other than that, it has been very reliable. I would feel confident driving it anywhere. What started as a temporary backup has now become my go-to car!

I've been the proud owner of a 1988 Daytona Shelby Z since the day before Thanksgiving in 1987. Four years ago, I stumbled upon a 1990 Daytona ES with a 3.0 V6 engine. It only had 70,000 miles on it and looked fantastic, complete with an automatic transmission and air conditioning. Now, I have two Daytona's in my garage, and they both look and run great despite being over/under 30 years old. The 3.0 engine is a powerhouse with plenty of torque, but the valve seals are a well-known issue. Frequent oil changes help with the smoking issues they are known for. The handling is superb, and I always get compliments on them (you hardly ever see one of these anymore). I mostly drive them for pleasure, and they are both bright red. The Shelby has leather interior, and the ES has cloth. Both have 4-wheel disk brakes (pretty modern back in the late 80s), and they are relatively easy to work on and maintain. If you can find one, they are a lot of fun!

Daytona's are a fantastic choice for a high school student car. They are easy to fix and have a great reputation for quality. You won't regret investing in one!

I got the car, but unfortunately, I started having some problems with it almost immediately. I had to get a new engine, catalytic converter, radiator, and even had the transmission rebuilt twice. Thankfully, it runs well now, but there are still some things that could be improved. The radiator fan is currently hooked up to a manual switch on the dash because the person who changed the engine messed up the wiring. I'm planning on getting new glass all around, a new paint job, and new tires and wheels for it. I'm also hoping to increase the horsepower of the 5-speed manual 2.5Ltr 4-banger engine. As my first car, I'm learning a lot and I'm excited to see it running even better!

I have owned a 90 Daytona for 12 years and have experienced several mechanical issues, including problems with the door handles, pop-up headlights, and suspension. However, I am confident in my ability to handle these issues and have learned a great deal from my experiences.

I purchased my car for $1000 with 150000 miles and unfortunately, within 8 months, I experienced multiple issues including engine failure, transmission problems, two clutch replacements due to a snapped bolt, flywheel malfunction, drive axle issues, subframe corrosion, and even a broken frame while driving on the highway causing a wheel to detach from the car. The carburetor was also damaged and the heads were gummed up, resulting in a fuel economy of only 4MPG. Despite my efforts, this car was unreliable and heavy, and it has left me with a negative impression of Chrysler.

Hey there! I heard that your neighbor owns a 91 Daytona, but unfortunately, it seems like the car has been causing him a lot of trouble. It looks like many of the issues stem from the poorly designed 3 litre V6 engine, and it seems like just about everything that could go wrong with the car has. If you're thinking about buying this model, I would recommend being cautious. However, it's worth noting that the car's dependability and performance can greatly improve with proper maintenance. Just a helpful hint! :)
