The Dodge Daytona is an automobile which was produced by the Chrysler Corporation under their Dodge division from 1984 until 1993. It was a front-wheel drive hatchback based on the Chrysler G platform, which was derived from the Chrysler K platform. The Chrysler Laser was an upscale rebadged version of the Daytona. The Daytona was restyled for 1987, and again for 1992. It replaced the Mitsubishi Galant-based Challenger, and slotted between the Charger and the Conquest. The Daytona was replaced by the 1995 Dodge Avenger, which was built by Mitsubishi Motors. The Daytona derives its name mainly from the Dodge Charger Daytona, which itself was named after the Daytona 500 race in Daytona Beach, Florida.

History

The Daytona originally used the 2.2 L Chrysler K engine in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form. Power outputs are 93 and 142 hp (69 and 106 kW) respectively. The 100-horsepower (75 kW), 2.5-litre K engine was added for 1986. In 1985, the 2.2-L Turbo I engine's horsepower was increased to 146 hp (109 kW). The 1984 Daytona was available in three trim lines: standard, Turbo and Turbo Z. Total production was 49,347. The Daytona Turbo was on Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for 1984. Both the Daytona and Chrysler Laser were available with the Chrysler electronic voice alert system through 1987. A performance oriented "Shelby" version of the Daytona was introduced in 1987.

1984

The Daytona debuted with a 142 hp Turbo I motor. Many Turbo Z models were produced and were more luxurious than other years due to their use of Mark Cross leather, light up speakers, and rear amplifier switches. These options were dropped after 1984.

Why is the Dodge Daytona so rare?

The production run was designed to satisfy NASCAR's homologation requirement that at least 500 units be available to the public, and of the 503 produced only 70 cars received the 426ci Hemi V-8. Among them, even fewer—just 22—came with the four-speed A833 manual transmission. They are rare and fast cars indeed.

Why was Dodge Daytona banned?

Because of their exceptional speed and performance, NASCAR subsequently changed the rule book, effectively banning all four of the Aero Cars from Dodge, Ford, Mercury, and Plymouth from competition by the end of 1970.

What is special about the Dodge Daytona?

A larger air cleaner and a free-flowing exhaust system led to 350 horsepower, so the Daytona packed a bit more punch than the standard R/T of the day, and the speed limiter was removed by means of a high-speed engine controller – so it had a higher top speed than the non-Daytona models.

How many Dodge Daytonas are left?

as of currently the dodge registry there are 92 charger daytonas known to exist. only 11 are Hemis. considering that on chryslers books they claimed to have produced 505 daytonas but there is rummored that they reused vins on there books to get into nascar.

What does Daytona stand for Dodge?

Dodge gave their first BEV the name 'Daytona' because of the first car to ever break 200 MPH, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. The Banshee powertrain was designed by Dodge to launch the brand into an all-electric future.

Why was Dodge Daytona banned?

Apparently, it was too fast for NASCAR's liking, and the evidence was there. As it turned out, Buddy Baker broke the speed record at the Talladega Superspeedway. Baker was the first driver to ever breach the 200mph barrier, and the Dodge Charger Daytona dominated several races.

THE SERVICE MANAGER AND SERVICE WRITER ADAMANTLY STATE THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AFTER THEY STATED THEY REPLACED THE BOX....YET....THE STEERING IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHEN I HAD THE VEHICLE TAKEN TO THEM. I HAVE SINCE RESEARCHED SEVERAL SITES WITH MUCH INFORMATION THAT CHRYSLER HAS KNOWN FOR YEARS THAT DODGE CARS (DID NOT MENTION MY VAN) HAVE HAD STEERING PROBLEMS AND THOSE PROBLEMS HAVE CAUSED MANY ACCIDENTS AND SOME DEATHS. THE WANDERING AND LOOSENESS AND VERY SLOW TO RETURN CONTINUES PLUS AN ADDED PROBLEM NOTED WHEN THEY RETURNED THE VAN, A SCREAMING OF THE STEERING WHEEL. CHECKED THE FLUID AND FOUND IT CONTINUOUSLY LEAKS FROM DAY ONE OF THE VEHICLE RETURNED TO ME. THE VEHICLE WAS AT THEIR SHOP FOUR TIMES TOTAL. THIS DEALERSHIP HAS ADAMANTLY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE STEERING PROBLEM AND DENIES THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ROOF ASSEMBLY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF YOUR AGENCY HAS ANY REPORTS SUCH AS MINE CONCERNING THE DODGE STEERING PROBLEMS AND IN PARTICULAR THE DEALERSHIP OF HEMET CHRYSLER IN HEMET CALIFORNIA. I AM SEEKING CLEAR INFORMATION RELATIVE TO THE STEERING OF ALL CHRYSLER/DODGE PRODUCTS WITH EMPHASIS ON THE VANS USED FOR MOTOR HOMES IN AND SINCE 1992, THANK YOU. *TR

Negative 1992 Dodge Daytona car reviews

  1. Clement Auer 2024-10-02

I purchased my car for $1000 with 150000 miles and unfortunately, within 8 months, I experienced multiple issues including engine failure, transmission problems, two clutch replacements due to a snapped bolt, flywheel malfunction, drive axle issues, subframe corrosion, and even a broken frame while driving on the highway causing a wheel to detach from the car. The carburetor was also damaged and the heads were gummed up, resulting in a fuel economy of only 4MPG. Despite my efforts, this car was unreliable and heavy, and it has left me with a negative impression of Chrysler.

  2. Kelley Heller 2024-08-27

Hey there! I heard that your neighbor owns a 91 Daytona, but unfortunately, it seems like the car has been causing him a lot of trouble. It looks like many of the issues stem from the poorly designed 3 litre V6 engine, and it seems like just about everything that could go wrong with the car has. If you're thinking about buying this model, I would recommend being cautious. However, it's worth noting that the car's dependability and performance can greatly improve with proper maintenance. Just a helpful hint! :)

  3. Omari Deckow 2024-03-13

The car's appearance caught my eye immediately, and I was excited to try it out as the little brother of the Iroc R/T. However, I was disappointed to find that it didn't perform as well as I had hoped. The seats were uncomfortable and didn't provide enough support for my upper back, and the visibility for shoulder checking was almost non-existent. I recommend using stick-on convex mirrors to improve visibility. Additionally, the car had some issues with rust, although the flairing did help to keep out debris. After some bad experiences on icy highways with almost new tires, I have decided to replace this Iroc with a Z-24 from the same year. This experience has taught me that while appearance is important, it's not everything.

Positive 1992 Dodge Daytona car reviews

  1. Hiram Fisher 2025-02-22

Your 1987 Shelby Z is 24 years old, and it's amazing that it has never let you down despite having 76,000 hard-driven miles on it. It sounds like you've had a lot of fun with it, especially with all the racing you've done in North Jersey and at Englishtown NJ. The 2.2 intercooled turbo is a great motor that is way underrated by Ford and GM guys. If you're lucky enough to find an '87 in decent shape, I highly recommend buying it! Just keep in mind that the '87 motor has the 2-piece intake manifold, while the '88 and up have the one-piece cast manifold.

  2. Nicklaus Miller 2025-01-17

I bought my 87 Daytona Shelby Z brand new and have loved it ever since. I have driven this car very hard and have never had a mechanical problem. I raced this car at the Mopar Atlantic Nationals at E-town in N.J. since 1991. The car handles awesome and is great to cruise in during the summer with the T-tops off. After 21 years of ownership, I thought I would never get rid of this car, but I recently gave it to my son for his 18th birthday so he and his future wife can enjoy it as much as his mother and I have.

  3. Joaquin Hoeger 2024-10-08

I love the car! It's fun to drive and provides good transportation.

  4. Karl Heller 2024-09-26

I loved driving the car. It's fast and great transportation. It's also quick.

  5. Glen McDermott 2024-09-14

What a great car to drive! I have a V6 five-speed that still competes with the best of them, even after 250,000 miles. People still ask me what's under the hood, and I tell them that all it takes is an oil change every 3000 miles and a tune-up with some plugs every 5000 miles. Plus, it's great on gas! The best part? I bought this car for just $300.00, sitting in someone's backyard with weeds growing around it and wasp nests in the door jambs. I was told it hadn't run for years, but with a new coil and a turn of the key, it started right up on the first crank. What a car!
