Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.

Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.
Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

- Summary: LESS THAN 30,000 MILES. PERSISTENT PROBLEM (SINCE 2012): ENGINE SHUTS OFF BY ITSELF. NO WARNING LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD BEFORE EACH OCCURRENCE. CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES. ON 08/17/2016 AROUND 11:45 A.M. CAR SHUT OFF BY ITSELF WHILE DRIVING ON THE MIDDLE OF A MULTI-LANE (6+) HIGHWAY. I WAS ABLE TO ROLL DOWN THE AUTOMATIC WINDOW (IT WORKED ) ON THE DRIVER SIDE, I PRESSED THE WARNING LIGHT (IT WORKED). AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS CAR STARTED, AND I DROVE AWAY. THE CAR WORKED WELL FOR A WHILE, TOOK SIDE ROADS(35MPH SPEED LIMIT). CAR SHUT OFF BY ITSELF A SECOND TIME. I WAS ABLE TO RESTARTED AND MADE IT TO A SAFE LOCATION. I HAVE REPORTED THIS LAST SITUATION TO CHEVROLET AND THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO A DIFFERENT DEALER, AND ONLY AFTER PRESSURING THEY PROVIDED A 100.00 DOLLAR COUPON TO GET THE CAR CHECKED. CHEVROLET CLAIMS THEY HAD NO INFORMATION ON MY CAR'S RECORD OF SHUTTING DOWN BY ITSELF, THAT THEY DEALER ONLY REPORTS THE REPAIRS. HOWEVER, ONE OF THE DEALER INVOICES FROM 2012 READS: "VEHICLE STALLED", " ANOTHER INVOICE READS "CAR DIED ONCE", ETC. AND ON THE NOTES IT INCLUDES "UNABLE TO REPLICATE CLIENTS CONCERNS". JUST BECAUSE THE DEALER CANNOT REPLICATE THE FAILURE, IT DOES NOT MEAN THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE. THE CAR IS NOT SAFE. THE CAR SHUT DOWN ON US AND WE WERE LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF A MULTI-LANE HIGHWAY WITH CARS GOING 65+MPH. THE SUDDEN COMPLETE SHUT OFF OF THE CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF ANY ROAD IS A GREAT DANGER NOT ONLY TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE CAR BUT TO OTHER DRIVERS AS WELL. OTHER PROBLEMS: CLOCK/TIME GETS RESTARTED EACH TIME I START THE CAR (AND IT IS NEVER RIGHT). IN MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, DURING THE MORNING, THE CAR WOULD NOT START (BUT RADIO AND WINDOWS WORK), THE CAR WOULD TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES TO GET STARTED.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Chevrolet Aveo and 2009 Pontiac G3 vehicles. The vehicles may contain brake fluid which does not protect against corrosion of the valves inside the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, affecting the closing motion of the valves.
- Consequence: If the ABS valve corrodes it may result in longer brake pedal travel or reduced performance, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS module, free of charge, in any vehicle that did not have its module replaced under a previous customer satisfaction campaign. The recall began in late September 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), and 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac). GM's number for this recall is 14505.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the 2009 Aveo. I'm really happy with my purchase - it's a compact car with great gas mileage, and it's been a lot of fun to drive. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well it rides, and I'm getting 32 MPG in the city, which is fantastic. I think GM has really stepped up their game with this one. The car has more pick up than I expected, although it struggles a bit on upgrades - but that's to be expected with a compact car. I've had it for about a month now, and I haven't noticed any blind spots - the side windows are nice and big. The engine runs quietly, and it's been a smooth ride on the highway. The only downside is that it's made in Korea, but overall I think it's a great option for anyone looking for a compact car. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I also own an Aveo5 2LT from 2009. I found that the drive by wire took a little getting used to with the 5 speed, but I've adapted now. The leatherette interior is really nice, although I did notice that the driver's seat started to lose its shape almost from day one. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase. The car is so much fun to drive and really comfortable too. If you're used to driving a larger car, it might take a few days to adjust to the higher RPMs at highway speeds, but it's worth it for the driving experience. It's such a great little car for the money!

I traded in my SUV during the cash for clunkers program. After looking around a bit, I went to my local Chevy dealer and asked for the cheapest car on the lot. They gave me the '09 Aveo manual hatchback. I have driven about 4-5 thousand miles so far, and I must say, this car is great! The gas mileage is fantastic, about 25 city and 38-40 highway. The engine is what you would expect from a small car, but it does the job and can even reach over 100 mph (I tested that the first night I had it). The interior is pretty good, a little sparse, but comfortable. The roof is high, so even my tall friends fit comfortably. The only issue I have with it is that all the windows have a tendency to fog up, even with the defrost on. However, for under $200 a month, it's a great deal!

I drive 115 miles round trip to work every day and I bought this car for its economy and the great deal I got on it. It averages 36 mpg at 70 mph and the interior is very nice (LT) with no rattles. The radio is also very good. Changing the oil is easy once you get a 45 star bit and a 24meter socket for the filter. All in all, it's a really nice little car!

When my wife first got it, I called it a clown car because of its small size, but it's surprisingly peppy and fun to drive. The car is more comfortable than you would expect, and the back seats are even more comfortable than those in other small cars on the market. We tested most of them, except for the Ford, I'm not sure why. The car could get better mileage, but overall, we're happy with it. I sometimes miss our old Geo Metro though!

I bought the car used with 25K miles. During my first long drive of 200 miles on the highway, I was only able to get an average gas mileage of 24mpg, which was a bit disappointing. I had some trouble accelerating enough to merge with traffic, and other drivers honked and flashed their lights at me, which was frustrating. Unfortunately, after only 10 days of owning the car, the check engine light came on during a snowstorm in Minnesota, and the car decelerated to 5 miles per hour, nearly causing an accident. It was a scary experience, and I was disappointed that there was no warning. When I turned on the heat, the engine began to die, and I heard a cracking sound from the motor. In the end, I decided to get rid of the car.

Three months ago, I traded in my truck for a car with better gas mileage. We found an Aveo, which my parents and the dealer (who happens to be my father's cousin) recommended. However, I have had some issues with the car. The gas mileage is not as good as I expected, as I only get around 25 miles per gallon, even though I mostly drive on highways or back roads. Additionally, the car does not perform well in the snow, even with studded directionals. The heater makes a loud ticking noise, especially on the highway, and the radio cuts out when I turn on the rear window defrost. Sometimes, there is a whistling noise when I hit 60mph or lower. The interior looks and feels cheaply made, and overall, the car does not meet my expectations. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that I can find a solution to these problems and enjoy my car more.

The car's acceleration may not be the best, but its good fuel economy more than makes up for it. I've owned this car for just under a year now and have unfortunately been experiencing some issues with it lately. Despite this, the dealership has been very helpful in fixing the problems, although it has required a few visits. Overall, I still love the car, but as they say, you get what you pay for. Despite the cheap price, it's still a great car.

I can only manage to get 29.8 mpg out of it, even with a Lucas additive in the fuel. It's a good driving car, maybe even better than a Toyota Prius, but the fuel economy is poor compared to my old Toyota Tercel wagon with on-demand 4 wheel drive, which comes in handy during the winter months.

I wanted to buy American to stimulate the economy, and the salesman showed me the gas economical Aveo. After researching and buying, I found out that it was made in South Korea. Nowhere in the reviews or paperwork did it say that it was Korean made. When I hit a slight bump or rut in the road, I hear a popping noise at the suspension area, and the same happens when I turn sharply. The gas mileage is 32-34, which is the best I've seen after 6 months. The interior design is fair, but the plastic feels cheap. The back fold-down seats rattle when they're up normally. The body quality is poor at best, and the bumper is already peeling by the trunk. For the price, I would recommend buying a Toyota. They tell the truth.
