1993 Dodge Daytona problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Daytona is an automobile which was produced by the Chrysler Corporation under their Dodge division from 1984 until 1993. It was a front-wheel drive hatchback based on the Chrysler G platform, which was derived from the Chrysler K platform. The Chrysler Laser was an upscale rebadged version of the Daytona. The Daytona was restyled for 1987, and again for 1992. It replaced the Mitsubishi Galant-based Challenger, and slotted between the Charger and the Conquest. The Daytona was replaced by the 1995 Dodge Avenger, which was built by Mitsubishi Motors. The Daytona derives its name mainly from the Dodge Charger Daytona, which itself was named after the Daytona 500 race in Daytona Beach, Florida.

History

The Daytona originally used the 2.2 L Chrysler K engine in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form. Power outputs are 93 and 142 hp (69 and 106 kW) respectively. The 100-horsepower (75 kW), 2.5-litre K engine was added for 1986. In 1985, the 2.2-L Turbo I engine's horsepower was increased to 146 hp (109 kW). The 1984 Daytona was available in three trim lines: standard, Turbo and Turbo Z. Total production was 49,347. The Daytona Turbo was on Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for 1984. Both the Daytona and Chrysler Laser were available with the Chrysler electronic voice alert system through 1987. A performance oriented "Shelby" version of the Daytona was introduced in 1987.

1984

The Daytona debuted with a 142 hp Turbo I motor. Many Turbo Z models were produced and were more luxurious than other years due to their use of Mark Cross leather, light up speakers, and rear amplifier switches. These options were dropped after 1984.

Common 1993 Dodge Daytona problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1993 Dodge Daytona, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Speedometer and Odometer Issues:
Owners have reported problems with the speedometer not working correctly, often showing inaccurate speeds or failing completely. This issue is linked to a 3-pin speed sensor on the 5-speed transmission. Replacing the transmission speed sensor has not always resolved the problem, leading to persistent issues with the speedometer while the odometer continues to function.
  2. Airbag Light Illumination:
Another common complaint involves the airbag light staying on, despite attempts to address the issue by replacing the steering wheel clockspring and cleaning connectors on bumper airbag sensors. This persistent problem poses a safety concern and requires further troubleshooting to resolve.
  3. Turn Signal Malfunction:
Owners have experienced issues with the turn signals not turning off after completing a turn, particularly with the '93 wrap-around dash console. Despite replacing the hazard switch on the steering wheel column, the turn signal cancel problem persists, affecting the functionality of the turn signals.
  4. Compass and Outside Temperature Module Failure:
The compass and outside temperature module in the 1993 Dodge Daytona has been prone to failure due to leaking capacitors that contaminate the circuit board. Owners have attempted to address this issue by replacing capacitors on the module, but success has been limited, indicating a challenging repair process.

These common problems with the 1993 Dodge Daytona highlight electrical and safety-related issues that owners have encountered. Addressing these issues may require thorough diagnostics and potentially specialized repairs to ensure the proper functioning of these components in the vehicle.

Why is the Dodge Daytona so rare?

The production run was designed to satisfy NASCAR's homologation requirement that at least 500 units be available to the public, and of the 503 produced only 70 cars received the 426ci Hemi V-8. Among them, even fewer—just 22—came with the four-speed A833 manual transmission. They are rare and fast cars indeed.

Why are Dodge Daytonas so expensive?

Introduced in 1969 as a homologation special for NASCAR duty, the Dodge Charger Daytona was sold to the public in just 503 units. Arguably the most radical production model from the golden muscle car era (alongside the 1970 Plymouth Superbird), the Daytona morphed into a highly desirable and expensive classic.

What does Daytona stand for Dodge?

Dodge gave their first BEV the name 'Daytona' because of the first car to ever break 200 MPH, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. The Banshee powertrain was designed by Dodge to launch the brand into an all-electric future.

What was the last year they made the Dodge Daytona?

The Dodge Daytona is an automobile which was produced by the Chrysler Corporation under their Dodge division from 1984 until 1993.

Negative 1993 Dodge Daytona car reviews

  1. Davion Cremin 2024-11-27

I purchased this car from a private seller around 2 years ago for $1000. Although I've had to spend around $700 on repairs due to blown head gaskets and radiators, I still enjoy driving it. The car's sound is particularly impressive, and I love the growl of the Mitsubishi V6 engine. The interior is also great, with comfortable bucket seats that are perfect for sleeping in. However, I must admit that the car's fuel efficiency is not great, with only 8 MPG in the city and 14 MPG on the highway. Overall, I would recommend this car to someone who is willing to invest in upgrades, such as buying the IROC or converting it to a V8 RWD, to make it a true muscle car.

  2. Randal Nolan 2024-03-11

The car's appearance caught my eye immediately, and I was excited to try it out as the little brother of the Iroc R/T. However, I was disappointed to find that it didn't perform as well as I had hoped. The seats were uncomfortable and didn't provide enough support for my upper back, and the visibility for shoulder checking was almost non-existent. I recommend using stick-on convex mirrors to improve visibility. Additionally, the car had some issues with rust, although the flairing did help to keep out debris. After some bad experiences on icy highways with almost new tires, I have decided to replace this Iroc with a Z-24 from the same year. This experience has taught me that while appearance is important, it's not everything.

  3. Keon Mohr 2024-02-12

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned owning a 93 Daytona as your second vehicle when you were 18. It sounds like you enjoyed the comfortable seating and decent power and gas mileage, but found the body roll to be a bit much for a sports car. I completely understand where you're coming from! I also think the 93 Daytona is a beautiful vehicle. It's great that you were able to replace the starter and fuel pump during your three years of ownership at around 120k miles. The Mitsubishi 3.0 v6 sounds like a solid engine with good low-end power and a nice mid-range grab. It's a shame that the governor kicked in at 90 MPH and cut you off at 110, but that's typical for Dodge cars. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

Positive 1993 Dodge Daytona car reviews

  1. Zane Rowe 2024-11-26

I've owned this beauty for almost 7 months now and I must say, I've had some small issues, but she hasn't let me down at all. Mine is not a Shelby, but a C/S edition which has all of the Shelby package in it and runs like a rocket. This is my favorite car of all time and with some cheap upgrades, you can make these run 11-12 in 1/4 mile. The only thing is, because I got the Shelby's Maximum Performance package, my suspensions are so stiff that the car doesn't like bumps at all.

  2. Amani Swift 2024-11-23

I loved driving the car. It's fast and great transportation. It's also quick.

  3. Chadrick Koelpin 2024-11-21

Looking for a stylish and affordable ride? Consider the V6 Daytona! While the body structure, engine mounting, and rear hatch area may be a bit outdated since its original design in the early 80s, the 1993 Dayona has received many updates that make it a great choice. With a nice interior, decent drivetrain, and good utility, this car can even fit a 50 gallon water heater or your entire mountain bike! Look for a low mileage, well-maintained V6 Daytona and hit the road in style!

  4. Edd Cormier 2024-11-21

I purchased this car used in 1994 and it has been a reliable companion throughout its 140,000 miles. With nothing but routine maintenance, it has never let me down. Even today, it still turns heads whether at a car show or spooling the turbo down the track.

  5. Quinton Champlin 2024-11-07

It's great value for money and the most enjoyable car to drive. Every time you get in, the car's design just makes you want to go fast! I still have mine and have restored it, putting nice wheels on it. I didn't like the original ones. Today, it looks better than the day I drove it off the lot new! Mine is the 1993 Daytona IROC. I absolutely love it!
