Hyundai Sonata 2017 problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

  • VIN: 5NPE24AF1HH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In early June 2024 while driving 65 MPH vehicle started shaking, engine and oil light came on, losing power, noisy and only would go 50 MPH max. When destination reached, checked oil level (was low) added oil.Took the vehicle to auto repair shop. Review showed a misfire in cylinder #2 with plug oil fouled and recommended new engine. The car was taken to the Hyundai dealer who performed various diag. procedures via communicating with their Techline who ended up rejecting the request to replace the engine due to the milage (136K) being out of warranty. They would replace engine if the connecting rod bearings had wear or damage. Hyundai national consumer affairs contact given for the case refuses to listen to any information given and only states vehicle is out of warranty. Hyundai knows this engine has manufacturing issues causing them to wear out prematurely including excessive oil consumption. They should extend the warranty to at least 150K. Afraid to drive car as engine may suddenly stop or catch fire causing accident/injury to occupants. Please help!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • VIN: 5NPE34AFXHH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Bought a car. In couple days check engine light came on, it was blinking and car was put on limp mode, rpm between 1800-2000, speed 60-62 mph. Went to dealership they did full diagnostics, told that they are going to submit to Hyundai to replace engine at their cost. Hyundai came back that they want to replace knock sensor and then see what’s gonna happen. I replaced and was told that i have to pay even though there is a recall on Knock sensors. They replaced the sensor which was over 600$. And the problem came back in less than 36 hours. Now the vehichle is back again at the dealership and they gonna do diagnostics again. Which is ~200$. I need to help this resolved as i’m only being ripped off with no solution. The vin says it doesn’t have any recalls, but vehichle is experiencing exactly what’s on recall. The vehicle has been in the shops for a month now. Thank you

When my power steering light comes on and steering wheel locks up, I have to put the car in park & rev the engine to get the light to turn off. Mechanics said all pulleys are in good shape so not sure what's doing it. My lights also start to flicker when power steering light comes on. I have a new altenator and battery so it's not caused from that. I have no idea what's causing it but it's extremely dangerous!!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF9HH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: To whom it may concern, I would like to inform you that I have been experiencing engine power loss and oil evaporation from my Sonata. In fact, I took the vehicle for an oil change in April 26, 2024 and by August 1, 2024, my car was not accelarating and the dashboard was completely illuminated with the engine, air bags and suspension lights. Upon inspection of engine oil dipstick, I was made aware that my oil was missing (evaporated) without any visual undercarriage drips. Therefore, I added 4 qts of synthetic oil to my car recently replaced oil and the car continued without power. Upon connecting a vehicle code reader, it was reported that a spark plug was malfunctioning and I continue with its replacement. To date the vehicle continues to have engine loss of power episodes. Can someone please help as I do not want to die in this vehicle due to a manufacturer's unannounced/undisclosed engine issue. Thank you for your time and consideration.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: 5NPE34AF5HH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Me along with thousands of others are experiencing the “excessive oil consumption” issue. Hyundai is doing nothing except making us pay tons of money for testing when they already know what the issue is and is refusing to do anything. Enough is enough. I can’t afford a new car nor should I be forced into buying one. The dealerships have been instructed by Hyundai USA not to admit negligence or helping g the car owners.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
  • VIN: KMHE34L12HA
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: This is the seventh occurrence of complete loss of power while driving on the interstate. The hybrid system warning activated, followed by the engine shutting down, and all dashboard lights illuminated with alerts indicating "Shut Off Engine/HEV." An 18 wheeler was pulling out from the shoulder as I was losing power and barely missed getting crushed. The former problems have all been at interstate speeds with similar accident avoided. The service history clearly demonstrates that Hyundai has repeatedly attempted to address this issue by replacing numerous critical components, including the engine, transmission, knock sensor, battery (three times), integrated brake actuation system, and smart cruise control, among others. Despite these extensive repairs, the problem persists. On this latest occasion, less than 4,000 miles and four months since the last major incident, the dealership has proposed replacing the intake manifold, EGR valve, HSG belt, and spark plugs. The belt was changed less than 20K miles ago. and I believe the spark plugs were as well. Each time my vehicle experiences this issue, it is out of commission for weeks or even months at a time, causing significant inconvenience and raising serious safety concerns. I no longer trust this vehicle and I don't believe the many recalls have successfully addressed the root cause of issues with the 2017 Hybrids.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • VIN: KMHE24L34HA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I had the engine replaced in Feb of 2024 which was covered by the engine replacement recall. In May of 2024 I started having issues with my check engine light flashing on then off. The engine will lose power briefly during this time and the engine shakes. It feels like you are going to lose control of the vehicle when this happens. This has happened approximately 3 times at freeway speeds and a total of approximately 15 times total. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times for this issue. They made us pay for spark plugs that were fine when the engine was replaced (3800 miles was driven between the engine replacement and this issue starting). The dealership has now had the vehicle since the middle of May said they can’t recreate the problem but are saying it is a fuel pump. This was also fine when the checked it when the engine was replaced.

My safety and others were at risk by the car shutting down at any moment. I have not taken it to the dealer yet. I am willing to do an inspection at a dealership for a better understanding on the issue.Check engine light came on about a month ago and I kept trying to fix it but check engine light is still there.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-05
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF8HH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Without warning my car started consuming oil while still under manufacturer warranty. Hyundai had me do 2 oil consumption tests and they did there so called engine cleaning which they said should fix the problem on 2 different occasions and not even 3 months apart, well the engine was still consuming oil and now the oil is messing up my spark plugs and Hyundai refused to fix it. There is enough evidence out there that shows Hyundai knows their piston rings in the engines were no good for years and still keeps selling these engines without warning the customer. Hyundai refused to honor their warranty on the engine cleaning solution that the dealership is required to use by Hyundai itself. My car's engine went in less than 7 months after they first started doing the oil consumption test on my car and now refuse to fix or replace the engine. When my car's engine went luckily I was on a side street when it went, because if I was on the highway who knows what could have happened. Hyundai omitted in lawsuits outside the country for knowing these were bad piston rings. Which also led to fires in these cars engines. There is a Facebook page with thousands of people having the same issue and Hyundai not even trying to fix the problem, and there our to many to count around the world with the same engines and cars having the same issue so it not just a small isolated event.

Negative Hyundai Sonata 2017 car reviews

  1. Sammie Shanahan 2024-09-08

I purchased this car when I needed an additional vehicle for my household with multiple drivers. My previous car had over 300k miles on it and was still in use. During the first year, I was pleased with the gas mileage, comfort, and overall feel of the car. However, I did notice that it did not handle as well as my previous car in deeper snow due to its low body style, and I got stuck in the driveway a few times. I found that using sport mode was helpful in snowy conditions. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the engine burning oil this past year. I noticed this before the car hit 100,000 miles and contacted the dealer and Hyundai for assistance. Although they were not very helpful, I did complete an oil consumption test, which showed that the car used around 2.5 quarts of oil during the 3,000 mile test. While this was within specifications, it was still concerning. Other Sonata's from different years and engine types have been part of a class action lawsuit over engine problems. I would advise against purchasing this car to avoid any potential issues.

  2. Robin Tillman 2024-07-22

I recently purchased a 2017 Limited with only 28,000 miles on it, in pristine condition, and for a great price. The styling is superb, the leather heated seats are comfortable, and the safety features, like blind spot monitoring, work perfectly. My wife also fell in love with it, and during the test drive, I did notice a difference in steering, but I attributed it to the fact that it was a newer car than my 2007 Optima. I bought it on the spot. However, over time, I started to notice that compared to my Optima, this car required a lot more effort to keep it centered on the road. The electronic steering appears to be overly sensitive, and not even touching the steering wheel would cause it to steer to one side, then quickly start steering to the other side when correcting it to center. I had to constantly make corrections, which totally ruined the driving experience. This car has three drive modes: Economy, Normal, and Sport, and changing these modes tightens the steering wheel, but the wandering does not improve in the tightest Sport mode. I was dreading taking this car cross country, but I knew it would be more reliable than my 2007 Optima. Sure enough, during a long drive of 500 miles, I found it exhausting, and I was lamenting my decision to buy this car. In a weird twist of fate, a huge deer jumped in front of my car in Ohio, and we collided, causing three airbags to deploy and totaling the car. Thankfully, the safety features on this vehicle enabled us to walk away with no injuries. Now, I was thinking that maybe I was overreacting to this wandering issue, but when I drove a 2019 Toyota Camry rental car, I found the steering to be superb, and I knew for certain that this Sonata had a problem with its electronic steering. I am not sure if the problem was just with this particular car or with all 2017 Sonatas. I have heard that Hyundai had recently changed to electronic power steering, and possibly it was not perfected. When I was searching for a new car, I test drove a 2020 Optima and found the steering to be much better than the Sonata, but not as good as it was on my 2007 Optima with hydraulic power steering or the 2020 Toyota Camry with electronic power steering. In the end, I opted for a base model Camry SE, which meant losing some features like leather seats, blind spot detector, power passenger seat, and keyless fob. However, the steering issue was a deal breaker for me. If you're considering a Sonata, make sure to test drive it on the highway and ensure that the steering is comfortable for you. Another thing to note is that the ride on low profile tires is not as smooth on bumps as regular 18-inch tires, and these low profile tires perform poorly on snow, requiring snow tires instead of all-weather tires. I don't understand why many people desire SE models with bumpier rides for slightly better handling, but that's a personal preference...

In 2017, I purchased a new Hyundai Sonata Sport and absolutely loved it! The smooth and fast ride was the main reason I chose this car. However, in September 2019, my car started slowing down while I was driving, which was a scary experience. The engine light came on and the car continued to slow down, but thankfully I managed to pull into a parking lot without getting into an accident. The dealership was very helpful and arranged to get my car towed to their location. They replaced the engine with a new one, which was great. However, it's only been three months and I'm experiencing the same problem again. I took my car back to the dealer and although the diagnostic test showed no signs of a problem, they reset the engine. Unfortunately, the same issues immediately occurred. I'm trying to be proactive by addressing my concerns because it's a scary feeling not knowing when my car is going to shut off in traffic. It's too dangerous. My car is only 2 years old and I feel that Hyundai should be more experienced in fixing this problem, especially since my car isn't the first car with this problem. At this point, I'm disappointed and frustrated because my car isn't worth my hard earned money.

I rented a 2017 GLS model with the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine and took it on a road trip from TN to Columbus Ohio. During the trip, I got to know the car pretty well and was pleased with its gas mileage, averaging 35.1 Mpg for the whole trip, including city, highway, and idling. However, I did notice that the car lacked power when trying to merge in city traffic, which could be frustrating. The seats were comfortable for short trips, but I found them uncomfortable for longer journeys. Despite this, the instruments and dash were well-designed, and the AC, radio, and Bluetooth all worked great. The car also had a blindspot mirror installed, which was a nice feature. The windshield was a little short for me, as I'm 6'2, but the lights and steering were good. Overall, I would recommend this car for daily commutes and school runs, but it may not be the best choice for long trips unless you bring some extra comfort aids.

I purchased a 2017 Sonata Sport in April, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. Two months after purchasing it, I noticed that it would sometimes go forward instead of reversing, which was unexpected for a new car. Additionally, the shifter got stuck while I was trying to park and go into reverse, and the lights next to the shifter, camera, and front screen all turned off. This was a frustrating experience, as I was unable to move the car due to the brake also being stuck. This happened again 5 months later, while I was driving on the highway, and the car decelerated as if I had pressed the brake, with the lights next to the shifter turning off and the front screen going blank. I am disappointed that I have had so many issues with a new car, and I hope that the dealer can help me resolve these issues soon. While I cannot recommend this car based on my experience, I understand that it may be an isolated incident. I hope that others have better experiences with this car and the company. Thank you for your understanding.

Positive Hyundai Sonata 2017 car reviews

I had never owned a Hyundai before, but the steep discounts and numerous features finally convinced me to take a look. I was pleasantly surprised by the car. While it may not be the most eye-catching vehicle on the road, the interior is modern and well-designed. The acceleration is fantastic, especially in sport mode, although the fuel economy could be better. Admittedly, I have owned smaller cars in the past, so it's hard to make a direct comparison. It did take me some time to find a comfortable seating position, and at times, the car does feel a bit like a rental. The seats do stain easily, and the brakes are firm but a bit mushy for my liking. Additionally, the weight of the car causes it to lurch forward when coming to a stop. Finally, the trunk is quite small, which can be frustrating. Overall, though, I really like the car.

I bought this car because it not only lights up but also beeps when a car enters my blind spot while I try to change lanes. It's an essential feature for us active adults!

I had the pleasure of test driving both the Standard Sonata and the Turbo Sport Sonata, which I found online at Edmunds. Let me tell you, the Turbo Sport Sonata blew me away! It had the perfect amount of acceleration and handled like a dream on the winding road I took it on. The seats were also a plus, with partial leather bucket seats that had lumbar support and heating. While I don't have all the latest technology gadgets, I have everything I need and love the car's comfortable ride. It's perfect for long drives, smoothing out any bumps in the road, and the gas mileage is fantastic. Plus, with iPhone Car play, I can stay connected while enjoying the ride.

We recently purchased the SE model from a rental car sale company, and I can hardly tell that it's not brand new. The acceleration is so smooth and quick that you have to keep an eye on your speedometer. Two years ago, we rented the same model for a road trip and were really impressed with how comfortable it was for four adults, three of whom are tall. We took it on winding mountain roads and narrow coastal lanes, and it handled perfectly. The interior is attractive, and the electronics interface is user-friendly and not at all annoying. I absolutely love driving this car.

Great car! Hyundai has really stepped up their game. I think they're right up there with Honda and Toyota, especially when you factor in price and what you get for your money.
