1998 Gmc Suburban problems
The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.
Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.
.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).
A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 1998 Gmc Suburban problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1998 GMC Suburban, several common problems have been identified:
- Water Pump Issues: Owners have reported frequent water pump failures, leading to coolant leaks and overheating. This problem often requires replacement, adding to maintenance costs and inconvenience.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: Another prevalent issue is leaks in the intake manifold gaskets, particularly affecting vehicles with the 5.7L engine. This problem can lead to coolant leaks and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Oil Consumption: Some owners have complained about excessive oil consumption, especially in the 2009 model year. This issue can be costly to address and may indicate underlying engine problems that require attention.
- Transmission Problems: Both earlier and later models of the Chevrolet Suburban have experienced transmission issues. Earlier models suffered from torque converter clutch problems causing harsh shifts, while later models faced diagnostic codes related to pressure leaks, necessitating repairs or replacements.
- Electrical and Starting Issues: Complaints about starting problems, such as clicking noises or failure to start, have been raised by owners. These issues can be frustrating and may require troubleshooting of the electrical system, including the starter and battery connections.
- Air Conditioning Problems: Pre-2016 Suburbans have been noted for subpar air conditioning performance, requiring vigilance for leaks and belt maintenance to ensure proper functioning.
- Maintenance Costs: The Chevrolet Suburban has been reported to be expensive to maintain, with costs varying depending on the model year. Older models, in particular, can incur higher maintenance expenses, impacting the overall ownership experience.
- Depreciation: The Suburban experiences significant depreciation over time, losing value at a rate of about 7% per year. This can affect resale value and overall cost of ownership, especially for those purchasing new vehicles.
- Insurance Costs: Owners have highlighted that insuring a Chevy Suburban can be costly, with average annual insurance premiums higher than those for other SUVs. This factor adds to the total cost of ownership for this vehicle.
- Severity of Repairs: The Severity of Repair score for the Chevrolet Suburban is higher than average, indicating a higher likelihood of needing significant repairs compared to other vehicles. This factor underscores the importance of thorough maintenance and potential repair costs for owners.
These common problems with the 1998 GMC Suburban highlight various challenges that owners may face, ranging from mechanical issues to maintenance costs and depreciation concerns. Addressing these problems promptly and proactively can help maintain the vehicle's performance and value over time.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-01-30
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: THIS CONCERNS NHTSA ACTION NUMBER : EA99011. I HAD A STEERING MODULE THAT FAILED. PRIOR TO REPLACEMENT OF THE MODULE, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD PERIODICALLY JERK AS IF TO INCREASE THE RATE OF TURN SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN I WAS IN A TURN, EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT. AFTER REPLACEMENT OF THIS MODULE AT THE GMC DEALERSHIP (AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES, AS I RECALL), THE JERKING INSTANTLY STOPPED. I NOW HAVE ABOUT 111,000 MILES, AND THE SAME JERKING HAS BEGUN AGAIN (AT ABOUT 100,000 MILES) FROM TIME TO TIME. IF A DRIVER UNFAMILIAR TO THE PROPENSITY TO JERK IN TURNS WAS DRIVING, I COULD DEFINITELY SEE WHERE THE UNEXPECTED JERKING MAY CAUSE THEM TO LOSE CONTROL. THE LATEST JERKING COMES AND GOES AND IS NOT VERY CONSISTENT FROM WEEK TO WEEK YET. WHEN IT GETS MORE CONSISTENT, I WILL ASK THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE MODULE. I DON'T PRESENTLY RECALL FOR SURE, BUT I THINK I MAY HAVE PAID FOR HAVING THE SENSOR MODULE REPLACED THE FIRST TIME. THE INCIDENT DATE BELOW IS AN ESTIMATE, SINCE I DON'T HAVE MY RECORDS OF THE FIRST STEERING MODULE REPLACEMENT WITH ME AS I AM FILLING OUT THIS FORM. ALSO, THE PURCHASE DATE WAS IN JANUARY, 2000, BUT I DON'T RECALL THE EXACT PURCHASE DATE AND DON'T HAVE MY PURCHASE RECORDS WITH ME.*AK
