2004 Pontiac Grand am problems
The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.
The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.
These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.
A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.
All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

Common 2004 Pontiac Grand am problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, several common problems have been reported:
- Gas Tank Weld Defect: A recall in 2004 addressed a bad weld in the gas tank, which could lead to a fuel leak and potential engine fires. Although the rate of incidence isn't incredibly high, it's crucial to check the VIN to ensure the vehicle is not affected by this serious issue.
- Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Some reports mention sudden unintended acceleration followed by smoke coming from under the hood and total engine failure below 150,000 miles. While engine and powertrain complaints are relatively scarce, this issue highlights safety concerns related to unexpected acceleration.
- Powertrain Reliability: Despite the mentioned issues, the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is generally reliable, with drivers reporting a minimum mileage of 200,000 before significant repairs become necessary. The original engine and powertrain can last anywhere from 225,000 to 250,000 miles before requiring retirement, making it a durable option for many drivers.
- Safety Features: The car comes with standard safety features like anti-lock brakes and full airbags, with some models equipped with traction control. While lacking modern gadgets like rearview cameras, the safety equipment in the 2004 Grand Am is considered adequate for its time, providing a decent level of protection for occupants.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am highlight a mix of electrical, safety, and reliability issues that potential buyers should be aware of when considering this vehicle.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: SECURITY LIGHT FLUSHED 2 DAYS AGO, AND WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ENGINE OFF THE CAR WOULD NOT CRANK OR START. TOOK THE BATTERY TO BE CHARGED, AND IT STILL WOULD NOT CRANK OR START. I SPENT ALL NIGHT ON THE INTERNET TO FIND THAT THE PONTIAC GRAND AM'S FROM 1999 - 2005 CAN HAVE SECURITY PASSLOCK ISSUES THAT CAUSE THE CAR NOT TO CRANK OR START. WITH THE KEY TURNED ON THE LIGHTS WILL COME ON AND THE WINDOWS WILL GO UP AND DOWN, BUT YOU CAN'T CRANK THE CAR. I FOUND A PROCEDURE THAT WILL TEMPORARILY BYPASS THE SECURITY PASSLOCK, WHICH INVOLVE FOLLOWING THE SEQUENCE OF TURNING THE KEY TO ON POSITION WAIT 10 - 12 MIN. TURN CAR TO OFF (HOPEFULLY THE SECURITY LIGHT IN DISPLAY WILL GO OFF COMPLETELY) THEN TURN THE KEY TO START. THAT WORK FOR ME, BUT THE SECURITY LIGHT DISPLAY IN THE DASH PANEL DID NOT GO OFF. I HAVE TO HOPE THAT I WILL LATER BE ABLE TO CRANK THE CAR UP AGAIN. I THINK THIS IS RIDICULOUS, AND DANGEROUS. YOU COULD BE SOMEWHERE FAR AWAY FROM OTHERS AND STRANDED. THUS YOU COULD BE IN POTENTIAL DANGEROUS FROM THE ELEMENTS OR ENVIRONMENT OR COULD BECOME A VICTIM OF VIOLENCE IF THE RIGHT PERSON(S) APPROACH YOU WHEN YOU ARE STRANDED.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-30
- VIN: 1G2NE52F94M
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE,AFTER A HARD RAIN, I CAME OVER A HILL AND NOTICED THAT TRAFFIC HAD STOPPED DUE TO AN ACCIDENT AHEAD. I HIT THE BRAKES AND NOTICED THAT MY SPEED WAS NOT IMPEDING AS NORMAL.I DIDN'T WANT TO COLLIDE WITH THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF ME IN MY LANE WHICH WAS COMPLETELY STOPPED ABOUT 40 YARDS AHEAD,SO, I TRIED TO GO TO THE LEFT. I FIGURED THAT IF I DIDN'T STOP IN THAT DISTANCE I 'D STOP IN 5 OR 10 MORE FEET WITHOUT COLLIDING WITH THE VEHICLE AHEAD. THE INSIDE SHOULDER WAS NOT WIDE ENOUGH TO SAFELY HARBOR BOTH FRONT WHEELS OF MY CAR AND MY LEFT FRONT WHEEL SKIDDED OFF THE SHOULDER CAUSING THE ENTIRE REAR END TO SKID OFF THE INTERSTATE WHILE THE FRONT AXLE REMAINED ON THE SHOULDER. LUCKILY THE RAVINE WAS SHALLOW AND I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ENTIRE CAR OFF THE SHOULDER INTO THE RAVINE AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RAVINE, WHICH HAD NO INCLINE AND GET BACK ON THE ROAD ALBEIT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I THOUGHT I NEEDED BRAKES SO I HAD THEM CHECKED OUT.I WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKES WERE IN GOOD SHAPE. THE REAR WERE NEARLY BRAND NEW AND THE FRONT HAD QUITE A BIT OF WEAR. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE REAR BRAKES WERE NOT SELF ADJUSTING. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE HAD TO BE DEPLOYED TO ADJUST THE REAR PADS. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN ENGINEERING DESIGN OR CONSTRUCTION. THIS IS MY FOURTH CAR AND I'VE NEVER HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKES ON EITHER VEHICLE UNLESS I PARKED ON AN INCLINE. SINCE THEN I NOTICED THE FRONT OF THE CAR AROUND THE WINDSHIELD SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN REPAIRED BECAUSE PART OF THE TRIM WAS LEFT OFF. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM ENTERPRISE RENTALS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD IF IT HAD EXTENSIVE OR ANY BODY WORK.

2004 Pontiac Grand am recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2004 Pontiac Grand am.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

I love Grand Ams! This is the best one yet.
-
I have the 2.2 Ecotec and I am extremely pleased with it. I get almost 40mpg on the highway! It is very easy to modify. For example, I added a factory spoiler and upgraded to a factory monsoon sound system (which took some time). The fold-down seats were a breeze to add and even keyless entry was easy to install. It is comfortable, quiet, looks awesome, and I love all the features. Most of all, the solid form design is impressive!
-
I have owned three Grand Am models, specifically the 97, 00, and 04 versions. Despite the wind noise from the window seals, which the dealerships were unable to fix despite multiple attempts, I have been generally satisfied with this car. While the interior materials may not be of the highest quality, this is to be expected from a GM vehicle.
-
I walked onto a car lot just browsing and laid eyes on this car. I had to have it immediately. At the time, it was used with 80k miles for 7000 dollars. I grabbed the car up. Since then, I added a K&N air filter, new 17' rims and low profile tires, and 2 12' subs in the trunk. It's an awesome car. I love the way it handles and feels while driving. I'm currently working on dual exhaust and a new paint job because white isn't my style, but overall, that car is hot. I've had no mechanical problems and I keep up with maintenance on the car.
-
I love my car, and I would definitely buy another one!

I've had this GA 04 for 10 years now. When I first got it, it only had 19000 miles on it. Over the years, I've had to replace the master/slave cylinder due to a defective master and the trailing arm due to hydroplaning into a ditch. Now that it's getting close to 200000 miles, I've noticed that it's starting to crunch when shifting to third. I guess it's time to change the syncros. Despite these issues, it's been a great car with excellent handling and gas mileage. I'm not sure if it's worth the expense or time to change the syncros, but overall, it has been an awesome car. I've put it through a lot over the last ten years and I would definitely get another one like it.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Grand Am GT with SC/T package that I got last November. At first, I was really excited about it, but unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. In just two weeks of owning the car, I had to replace the EGR, two ABS wheel hubs, and the water pump. I also had to replace the muffler because it had a hole in it. The GM shop told me that my transmission is going out and my mass control arms are going bad too, so I'll need to save up for those repairs. It's been a bit frustrating to deal with all of these problems, especially since I drive mostly on the highway and the car only had 30 thousand miles when I got it. Despite these issues, I'm still hopeful that I can get everything fixed and enjoy my car for years to come!

Your 2004 Pontiac Grand Am sounds like a reliable car! It's impressive that you've had it since 2005 and have only had to replace the blower motor a few times. With over 107,000 miles on it, it's great to hear that you've driven it from Illinois to Michigan multiple times without any issues. It's also good to know that it has great gas mileage on the highway. I can understand your concern about the cup holders and plastic interior, but overall it sounds like a great car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. Unfortunately, I had to buy it due to a divorce, but other than that, it has performed really well! I bought it new in 2004 and it now has 97K miles on it. I've had to replace a few things like the battery, brakes, tires, front wheel bearing, and turn signal switch, but overall it's been pretty reliable. There have been a couple of interior pieces that broke in the last year, but they were easy to replace. My son has actually inherited the car now and he loves it! I think if you do your scheduled maintenance, most cars will serve you well. Personally, I don't think I'll buy new again because I hate taking the hit when I want to change cars. Buying used can be a bit tricky, but as long as you have a mechanic you trust check it out and keep up with the maintenance records, you should be good to go!

Congratulations on your first car! While it may not have power windows, it still has a lot going for it. The 4cyl engine provides plenty of zoom, especially on the freeway, and it gets great gas mileage. You've even managed to go 400 miles on a single tank! Although you've had a few mishaps, like driving without a passenger side mirror and a few fender crunches, this car has served you well. It's an affordable option with some power, making it a great choice for a first car. Keep up the good work!
