Ford Explorer 2005 problems

The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.

The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.

Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.

For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).

In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

    • Impact: While not as severe as transmission issues, bubbling paint and cracked panels can affect the aesthetics and potentially lead to rust if not addressed promptly.
  3. Structural Issues:
    • Description: Structural problems make up a significant portion of complaints, including excessive rust in the roof rivets, broken sun visors, and premature corrosion around the welds in the subframe.
    • Impact: Structural issues can compromise the vehicle's integrity and safety, requiring thorough inspection and repair to ensure the vehicle remains structurally sound.
  4. Powertrain Problems:
    • Description: Powertrain issues, such as rough shifting, fractured shifters, and total transmission failure before 150,000 miles, have been reported by owners.
    • Impact: Powertrain issues can affect the vehicle's performance, drivability, and overall reliability, necessitating timely repairs to prevent further damage.
  5. Visibility Concerns:
    • Description: Visibility complaints include broken windows, particularly in the back window, which may crack or shatter when the defroster is engaged on cold days.
    • Impact: Visibility issues pose safety risks by obstructing the driver's view, highlighting the importance of addressing window problems promptly to ensure safe driving conditions.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2005 Ford Explorer underscore the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to address these issues and maintain the vehicle's performance and safety.

  • VIN: 1FMZU67K15U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 2005 EXPLORER SPORT TRAC HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AND WHEN IT DOES, MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STOPS WORKING. MY TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, TEMP, AND FUEL GAUGES STOP WORKING. NOT REALLY SURE WHAT IS GOING ON WITH IT, BUT WHEN EVERYTHING STOPS WORKING, I SIT THERE AND HIT THE DASH TO GET THE LIGHTS AND WINDOWS TO START WORKING AGAIN. I USED TO BE ABLE TO HIT THE DASH WITH MY HAND AND GET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO GO OFF AND THE GAUGES START WORKING. WHEN I CALLED MY LOCAL FORD STORE AND TALKED TO THEM IN SERVICE, THEY QUOTED ME LIKE $400 FOR A PART AND JUST AS MUCH FOR LABOR, LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING THESE PROBLEMS AND THEY KNEW WHAT IT WAS TO FIX. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING, BUT WITH THE ODOMETER NOT REGISTERING MILES FOR THE PAST 6 MONTHS, I NOW HAVE A VEHICLE THAT IS CONSIDERED SALVAGE TITLE BECAUSE IT IS UNKNOWN MILES.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-11
  • VIN: 1FMZU62K55U
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 1) ABS, BRAKE, AND WRENCH FAILURE LIGHTS FLASHED ON FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS AND TURNED OFF WHEN DECELERATING WITH CRUISE CONTROL FROM 55 MPH TO 45 MPH ZONES AT COURLAND, VA. VEHICLE MANUAL PROVIDES NO GUIDANCE ON THIS FAILURE MODE; ONLY 'WARNING LIGHTS TURN ON AND CONTINUE FLASHING, REDUCE SPEED AND TAKE VEHICLE TO NEAREST SERVICE PROVIDER' AND 'WARNING LIGHTS TURN ON AND STAY ON, STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY AND HAVE VEHICLE TOWED TO NEAREST SERVICE PROVIDER.' 2) APPROXIMATELY TEN MINUTES LATER, DRIVER BEGAN APPLYING BRAKES TO DISENGAGE CRUISE CONTROL AND SLOW FROM 60 MPH TO 35 MPH SCHOOL ZONE SPEED ABOUT 50 TO 60 M BEFORE SCHOOL ZONE WARNING SIGN AT CAPRON ELEMENTARY, VA, ON STATE HIGHWAY 58. 3) DRIVER CHECKED SPEED UPON ENTERING SCHOOL ZONE AND FOUND CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT STILL ON AND VEHICLE STILL TRAVELING AT 60 MPH. DEPRESSED BRAKE APPROXIMATELY 1/3 TOTAL BRAKING RANGE (4 CM), WHICH SHOULD HAVE LOCKED THE BRAKES AND BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A FULL STOP. NO EFFECT. CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT REMAINED ON AND VEHICLE CONTINUED AT 60 MPH. 4) AT THIS POINT, DRIVER REALIZED THAT HE HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, PANICKED, AND DECIDED HE HAD TO STOP OR CRASH THE VEHICLE. DRIVER JAMMED THE BRAKE PETAL AS HARD AS HE COULD AND HELD. IT TOOK PROBABLY 3 SECONDS FOR THE REAR BRAKES TO FINALLY GO UP A LOGISTIC GROWTH RESISTANCE CURVE, GRAB, AND STOP THE VEHICLE. NO BRAKING BY FRONT WHEELS. ABS DID NOT WORK. CONTRIBUTING PHYSICAL DEFECTS: WORN-OUT FRONT BRAKES, EVEN THOUGH VEHICLE WAS KEPT UNDER RIGOROUS MAINTENANCE AND HAD VALID VIRGINIA STATE INSPECTION STICKER. WARPED FRONT BRAKE ROTORS MOST LIKELY INDUCED INTERMITTENT FALSE SIGNALS TO COMPUTER CONTROL CENTER CAUSING CRUISE CONTROL TO FAIL TO DISENGAGE.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-11-06
  • VIN: 1FMDU73W55U
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ABOUT 7 MONTHS AGO I STARTED HAVING AN ISSUE WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, THAT SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR IT WOULD REV AND HESITATE AND WHEN IT DOES IT TO MANY TIMES WHILE DRIVING THE CHECK TRANSMISSION MESSAGE APPEARS ON THE DISPLAY AND ALSO THE O/D LIGHT BLINKS AND MY TRUCK WILL ACT FUNNY UNTIL I SHUT IT OFF. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE AND WHEN I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC IT IS GIVING THEM SEVERAL DIFFERENT ERROR CODES AND THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO TRY ALL 6 CODES TO FIGURE IT OUT. SINCE IT IS A CLOSED TRANSMISSION CASE THAT HAS NO DRAIN PLUG AND NO DIP STICK TO CHECK THE FLUID THEY REALLY DON'T WANT TO MESS WITH IT AND COST ME A TON OF MONEY TO FIGURE IT OUT. I HAVE 106,000 MILES ON IT CURRENTLY AND HOPE YOU GIVE ME A MORE PINPOINT RESOLUTION SO I CAN DECIDE IF I SHOULD GET IT REPAIRED AND WHAT MORE SPECIFICALLY THEY CAN TRY.
