2013 Ford Fiesta problems
The Ford Fiesta is a supermini car that was marketed by Ford from 1976 to 2023 over seven generations. Over the years, the Fiesta has mainly been developed and manufactured by Ford's European operations, and had been positioned below the Escort (later the Focus).
Ford had sold over 15 million Fiestas from 1976 to July 2011, making it one of the best-selling Ford nameplates behind the Escort and the F-Series. It has been manufactured in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico, Taiwan, China, India, Thailand, and South Africa.
The Fiesta was discontinued in 2023, after over 22 million units had been made. The final Ford Fiesta rolled off the production line on 7 July 2023.

Common 2013 Ford Fiesta problems
The 2013 Ford Fiesta has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its transmission and engine.
Transmission problems are the most prevalent issue, accounting for over 60% of the problems reported by owners.
Engine problems also affected the 2013 Ford Fiesta, with 99 National Highway Traffic Safety Association complaints submitted. These problems include engine stalling, sudden loss of speed, decreased acceleration, and engine fluid leakage. Some of these engine problems are tied to transmission issues, with NHTSA reporting two crashes, four fires, and one injury in this category.
The 2013 model year is considered the worst of all, with 201 problems reported via 973 complaints. The 2011 Fiesta model year also had severe problems, earning CarComplaints.com's "Beware of the Clunker" badge due to problems in transmission, interior accessories, and engine categories.
It's important to note that while these problems are common, not every 2013 Ford Fiesta will experience them. If you do experience repeated problems with your Ford Fiesta, you may be covered under State Lemon Law or Federal Warranty Law.
When considering purchasing a used Ford Fiesta, it's recommended to stay clear of the 2011 and 2013 model years, as they have the worst track records. Instead, consider the 2016 and 2017 models, which have won CarComplaints.com's "Seal of Awesome" badge and have only 16 and 3 problem categories, respectively.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-08
- VIN: 3FADP4EJ1DM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I have a 2013 Ford Fiesta that I had financed through a 3rd party just right at a year . The ride was rough to begin with and I began experiencing problems such as a loud shrieking/grinding noise under the hood , which triggered the check engine light . Also pressing the gas and the car not accelerating properly which causes jerking , stalling , and etc. I had a mechanic look at it and did minor repairs but this problem is reoccurring. Recently , I was backing out of a parking spot and shifted the car into drive from being in reverse and pressed the gas and it didn't accelerate it just made a loud revving noise and jerked until I proceeded out the parking lot into traffic. The car continued to jerk really ridiculously, and I had to put on emergency lights and pull over into the nearest parking lot. I then had to call someone to trail me home. I recently had it towed to a local transmission shop after it jerked/stalled out really bad on me in heavy traffic again and didn't really want to accelerate to the proper speed. The mechanics at the Transmission shop ran a thorough diagnostic , and other tests and let me know that it's the Transmission Control Module that needs replaced and that it has to go to the dealership. Well I called a Ford Dealership , and the representative said it takes months to get in a new Transmission Control Module and also that even when replaced it really does not fix the problem as per many other similar situations the service representative has dealt with. I have been completely screwed all the way around with this car and I'm not even sure why there isn't a recall on these 2013 Fod Fiesta because they are really dangerous and it's so very inconvenient with all the troubles that come with it.

We have been told repeatedly , well that's just how the Ford Transmission was designed by mechanics. I have been waiting for a transmission appointment with my local Ford Dealer since the end of May. The appointment was Sept. 11th. The service agent just called me to inform me the problem is the clutch and pressure plate which needs to be replaced. The car has 104, 000 miles on it. Ford is not willing to do anything to make this safety issue right. I have called them and they say my VIN is not included in their database. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-08
- VIN: 3FADP4BJ3DM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I bought a Ford Fiesta in 2013 at Ford Parkway, Winston Salem. I received a letter from Ford to recall this car due to the transmission being defective stating that I can either file a lawsuit or bring the car to Ford to replace the transmission. Ford said they would replace the transmission. After that, I noticed that the noise was a bit less than before and my wife started using the car but not daily because she has been working from home, which resulted in having less than 56K mileage. Recently, I noticed that the car was not running smoothly, and a loud noise started to come every time I drive the car. I went to Ford Parkway, they said the entire transmission needs to be replaced, I told them that they should have done so when they said they did back to 2017. However, the service department informed me that they only replaced the outer shaft and the clutches back then, even though this was a known manufacturer defect issue and Ford stopped making this model because of that. Now, because of not driving this car daily for long miles like most people do, the transmission problem popped up later than expected and after my warranty period has expired which I wouldn't have benefit from it anyway because of the coverage that was for the transmission software only. I talked with the service director at Ford parkway, and explained to him that the warranty period should have nothing to do with the defect issue because lots of people who were lucky enough discovered this fatal issue early enough to get reimbursed and settled from Ford without waiting all that long as in my case because of not driving the car daily. I also talked to Ford customer service and asked to speak with a regional manager, they refused and said that they opened a case for me but they could not let me talk with the regional manager because he couldn't do anything. I have the call Ref number. Please advise on how this fatal issue can be settled as it threats our safety every time we drive the car.
2013 Ford Fiesta recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2013 Ford Fiesta.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
- Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the agency on April 23, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured July 1, 2012, to May 31, 2013, and 2012-2014 Fiesta vehicles manufactured February 1, 2012, to May 31, 2013. On April 30, 2015, Ford expanded the recall to cover an additional 119,567 vehicles, including certain model year 2011 Ford Fiestas manufactured from November 11, 2009, to May 31, 2013 and certain model year 2013 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2012, to June 30, 2012.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace all four door latches with an improved part, free of charge. Interim notifications were mailed to owners on June 5, 2015. The recall began on December 18, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S16.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Ford is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Fiesta vehicles, manufactured from November 3, 2009 through September 21, 2012. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." The passenger side curtain air bag will not deploy in the event of a side impact collision when the front passenger seat is empty. Although the side curtain air bag system was designed to suppress the side curtain air bag under this scenario, that information is not explained in the owner's guide for these vehicles as required by FMVSS No. 208.
- Consequence: An occupant in the right rear seating position will not have coverage from the side curtain air bag in a side impact collision when the front passenger seat is empty, increasing the risk of injury to the right rear occupant.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners and dealers will reprogram the vehicle's software free of charge so that it no longer suppresses the passenger side curtain air bag when the front passenger seat is empty, and consistent with the description in the owner's guide. The safety recall began on October 26, 2012. Owner's may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
Negative 2013 Ford Fiesta car reviews
Positive 2013 Ford Fiesta car reviews
-
My 2013 Ford Fiesta has been an exceptional car, with over 50,000 miles driven and not a single issue to report. The car's fuel efficiency, reliability, and performance have exceeded my expectations, and I have been consistently impressed with its handling and ride. Regular maintenance at my local Ford dealership has kept the car running smoothly, and I have had no complaints about its operation. I am confident in recommending the Ford Fiesta to anyone in the market for a reliable and efficient vehicle. At 56,387 miles for state inspection, I confidently had both front control arms replaced due to the poor condition of both ball joints. The passenger side rear shock was also replaced as it was leaking and no longer functioning as a shock absorber. After these repairs, the car passed inspection with flying colours. The engine and transmission are still performing flawlessly, and the ride and handling have improved significantly with the replacement of the ball joints and shocks. I have only had to replace one set of tires, both front ball joints, 2 rear shocks, and a set of brake pads on the front in the 3 years that I have owned the Fiesta. Regular oil/filter and air filter changes have been the only other maintenance required for this 7-year-old car with over 56,000 miles on it. Currently at 69,415 miles, the car is still performing exceptionally well. The majority of work on the car in the past 4+ years has been just regular maintenance things. The engine and transmission are still performing like new, and the ride, handling, and performance couldn't be better. Unfortunately, on September 21st, 2021, while on my way to work, a large buck ran out in front of me and stood there. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to avoid a collision. My Fiesta was unfortunately totaled, but I have since moved on to a 2016 Mazda 3 i Grand Touring Sedan. As a proud owner of a Mazda 3, I cannot imagine ever owning anything else. Although I will always miss my little Fiesta SE, I am confident that I made the right choice in upgrading to a Mazda 3. Rest in peace, little Fiesta, you will never be forgotten.

I purchased this car with the 5-speed manual transmission. After reading reviews of the automatic option and seeing that the fuel efficiency was the same, I didn't see the value in spending over $1000 for it. The only additional option I chose was the Ruby Red paint for $395. In my opinion, the SE model offers the best value for your money. It comes with features such as cruise control, heated mirrors, an upgraded stereo, and SYNC with steering wheel controls. The MSRP was $16,390, but I was able to purchase it for $13,350, including $1,250 in Ford rebates, at Sound Ford in Renton, WA. The dealership offered a significant discount that no other Ford dealer could match. At this price point, no other brand could compete!

The base model is a great option for commuters or single individuals/small families. With its 5-speed manual, it offers plenty of power and precise handling. The front seats are very comfortable, with high-quality cloth, and the transmission shifts very smoothly. Adjusting the seat height is easy, and the telescoping wheel helps with the driving position. While the base model lacks power windows, CD/sync, and cruise control, Ford did include an aux jack for phones or iPods. Given the high cost of used cars these days, purchasing a new '13 model was only about $2K more than similarly equipped 11's. Three years after my purchase, I sold the car to one of the few under-40's who can drive a manual. Unfortunately, the used car market flipped to surplus, and the Fiesta lost 55% of its value in 3 years. However, I had no problems apart from a malfunctioning dome lamp during that time. I appreciated the huge trunk, room for 4 slim people, and the excellent driving experience. Looking back, I would have been better off leasing or getting a vehicle with lower depreciation.

I purchased a 2013 Ford Fiesta Titanium HB with a 5 speed manual transmission with a little of 30k. At the time of this review I have had the car for about a month. Fist of all, I love the gas mileage, I am getting around 38MPG. The car accelerates good, but does have some motor lag with the AC on. However it's a manual, so I just push threw it. I am not a fan of the Sync system. I am 6,1" and I fit just fine in the car. I made a 4 hour dive last week, I got 40MPG with the AC on, and I was completely comfortable. The trunk is super tiny, but the seat fold down, so you can get around that. I stayed away from the automatic because of the reported problems.

My car has been in the shop for a new clutch after only 8 months and 15,600 miles. Although I have taken it to the shop twice before, I am confident that this third repair will resolve the clutch/transmission issues. Once the repairs are complete, I will be able to fully enjoy my car without any concerns. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

We have the 2013 Ford Fiesta Hatchback Titanium, which is a great looking car. However, we have experienced some issues with the car's transmission. At 12,000km, the transmission started to shutter, which felt like shifting a manual car too early. We took it to Ford, and they did a quick fix, which stopped the shuttering for a week. Unfortunately, it returned with a vengeance, and acceleration became unpredictable. We took it in, and with less than 30,000km (18641mi) on it, the transmission, clutch plate, and clutch were replaced. Although the shuttering stopped, it has started again a week later. Additionally, as someone who is 5'11

Hi there! I've noticed that my radio turns on by itself when I unlock my car, especially after using GPS. Also, while driving down the road, a message pops up saying 'Remove CD' even though there is no CD inserted. I was told that I would need to replace the sound system to fix it, but my car is 10 years old and I don't think it's worth it. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

Ford, do you really not have a better idea than this pile of metal junk? The transmission is a joke, the interior is so cramped that even a 5-foot man can't see anything, and the visibility in this sardine can is awful. This car should be banned on all major roads in the USA, and major insurance companies should not insure any year of this car. Ford should be made to buy back every single one of these abortions. Even after they fixed the transmission, it still acts like a sick, non-functioning tin can. This car has moved me to never again own a Ford. By the way, even a new Fiesta should never cost more than $9,000 since you're going to lose $8,000 right off the bat. This car is all about profit at the consumer's expense, and it doesn't represent Ford's better ideas.

I have owned my car for a year and unfortunately experienced three transmission repairs for the same issue. It is disappointing that dealerships do not disclose ongoing problems to buyers, as this would prevent the sale of these faulty vehicles. Despite the challenges, I am committed to finding a solution and ensuring that my car is in good working order. While I have had a negative experience with this Ford product, I remain confident in my ability to make informed decisions about future purchases. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I am currently helping my mother find a new car for her light driving needs, and we had considered a used Ford Fiesta Titanium automatic. However, after researching and reading reviews, it seems that this may not be the best choice. Many customers have reported issues with the automatic transmission/TCM units, which can be dangerous and difficult to fix. It's unfortunate that Ford has not addressed these issues and continues to produce and finance these cars. We want to ensure that my mother has a safe and reliable vehicle, so we will be exploring other options. Thank you for sharing your experiences and reviews on edmunds.com and elsewhere.
