Common 2016 Dodge Charger problems

The 2016 Dodge Charger, a four-door sedan with a rich history, has received mixed reviews regarding its reliability. Consumer Reports gave the 2016 Dodge Charger a three out of five for overall reliability. While it scored well in many categories, it received lower ratings in body integrity, paint and trim, suspension, and power equipment.

Body integrity issues include squeaks and noises from loose or cracked seals or weather stripping. One owner reported a minor occasional rattle right of the shifter where two different materials meet, particularly noticeable on rougher roads. Paint and trim issues, including peeling clearcoat due to engine heat, also contributed to the lower reliability score.

Suspension problems, such as squeaking while turning, can occur due to worn parts or loose bolts on the steering rack or suspension system. This issue may also be caused by a worn-out ball joint, requiring a mechanic's inspection.

Power equipment issues, such as difficulty filling the fuel tank, can be caused by a faulty gas emissions sensor. Replacing the sensor with one that fits correctly resolves the problem.

In addition to these issues, the 2016 Dodge Charger has six recalls, including an inability to cancel the cruise control, which could increase the risk of a crash. Two recalls involve front drive shaft issues, and one affects repairing the Charger. The car's body-side sill may give way when the car is being jacked, causing the jack to fail and drop the car.

Despite these issues, the 2016 Dodge Charger received high owner satisfaction ratings, with 89% of owners stating they would buy their car again. Potential buyers should be aware of the potential body and paint issues, as well as the recalls, when considering a used 2016 Dodge Charger.

It most certainly is a safety issue. Again, it has the exact problem as described in that recall. The gas smell is so strong, I cannot park it in the garage. I'm not sure if NHTSA issued the Revision 5, or Fiat Chrysler issued it.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • VIN: 2C3CDXCT4GH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Headlamps are not working therefore causing a safety issue when driving at night. Initially, 2 years ago, April 2021 the driver headlamp was not working. Dodge dealership had replaced and within the year the bulb would come off and on intermittently. It cost over $400.00. On March 18, 2022 I took it back to Dodge dealership and because it was working that day they just said to bring it when it was not working? They had the car for the whole day and did not inspect anything. Now a year later both of my headlamps are not working and took it back to them again. Now my fuses are melted and have been told by them that the cars electrical system is faulty. The car will need a new PDC Power Distribution Center unit that controls the electrical power which is no longer made. He found a dealer that has the unit available but also includes the wires harness . The charge for this including labor is 5300 if he the dealer will sell it to him. He did not advise of price for part and labor separately. The dealer charged me 212.00 to tell me this. Meanwhile I have a car that is only 7 years old that I cannot drive safely at night and it will not pass motor vehicle inspection which is in 2 weeks. Therefore, now I own a car I cannot legally have on the road because of this issue with the headlamps.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 2C3CDXJG0GH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The headlight bulbs, like a past recall on the 2011-2012 Chargers, regularly fry through fuses and stop working. This is obviously caused by a more serious issue in the vehicle and should be recalled. Many Dodge Charger and Challenger owners have been faced with this common problem, as shown in the comments on the page linked below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAmcGxeD5LY In my case, I've had several electrical issues with the headlight, and have had the entire headlight unit replaced. We have also switched the bulbs to see if that changes anything. After still having problems with the light going out, the repair shop I took it to informed me that the fuse can be switched for a quick fix, although it is not fixing the root of the problem, and this is a very common issue among these types of cars.

POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-01
  • VIN: 2C3CDXJG0GH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Car has strong smell of gas inside. Seeing by the other reports here that there is a regular problem with the fuel pump causing this issue. Is a safety hazard for obvious reasons. Drive shaft failed last year at less than 60,000 miles, but luckily had it replaced under dealership warranty. Others have not been so lucky, as I can see in these reports. Like tons of other reports here, door panels are also warping and disconnecting from the inside of the car. A completely cheap and poor design, and am shocked to see that nearly EVERY problem I've experienced with this car is COMMONLY experienced by other owners of this car. No idea how there haven't been more recalls, it's criminal that owners of this vehicle are left to foot the bill (THOUSANDS of $$$) for all of its defects.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-03-18
  • VIN: 2C3CDXHG4GH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The door panels started to peel away from the door. My car was still under warranty at the time and the door panels were replaced by the dealership. after a year the door panels have started to peel back again. It looks like it will keep the side airbag from deploying correctly if it is ever needed. I feel it is unsafe and should be part of a recall since it seems to be a common problem with these cars.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-06
  • VIN: 2C3CDXKTXGH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Strong smell of raw gas when fuel tank is 1/2 full(+). The smell is inside and outside the vehicle (mostly on driver's side near back door & wheel well) whether vehicle is running or not. The smell is just as strong outside as inside. When fuel level falls below 1/2 tank, the gas smell reduces. Removed rear seat, drivers side fuel tank cover have a crack in it. A puddle of gas was sitting on top of the fuel pump & a brown burn mark near the electrical plug. Google search: many complaints of fuel pump leakage. The fuel pump still works, it pumps/primes when the key is switched to the ACC position & the car cranks when pushed to turn on. The issue is fuel is leaking from the pump upward when tank is at or above 1/2 full. Tried to order new pump from local dealership (Northpoint Chrysler Dodge) who said it calls for a different part#, is out of stock with no expected date of availability, & is not available anywhere within their network. September 8th, went online to a site that provides OEM parts (World Parts Direct). They said the part was not available until September 23rd. Since they provided an availability date, I ordered the part & waited. The delivery arrived on the 29th. What arrived have a totally different part# with an electrical connector that must replace the factory connector. In order to install, the factory harness must be cut, spliced, soldered, & heat shrink a rubber sleeve to protect the soldered wires. I questioned the different part#, was told that is what their supplier sent, it is OEM, & should work. The new connector came with a diagram showing to switch the 2nd & 3rd pin from the factory connector into the new connector. The factory (+) & (-) pins are side-by-side, the new connector separates them. Fuel pump wiring is faulty, dangerous. Raw gas encountering electrical connectors is unsafe, can be explosive or deadly. Not inspected/repaired by dealer or mfg, no CEL, avail for inspection if needed. Let's not wait for someone to die for recall.

Negative 2016 Dodge Charger car reviews

  1. Angelo Parisian 2024-09-26

Dodge has the potential to create a great car if they improve their interiors. Although the exterior is mean-looking and sporty, the interior is currently made of cheap black plastic. The 5.7 Hemi engine provides ample power, but the 8-speed automatic transmission can be improved as it tends to hunt for gears. The tech and touch screen are impressive, but it is odd that there are no volume or radio controls on the steering wheel. Unfortunately, the front seats are uncomfortably hard, with lumbar support that sticks out too far even when deflated, and a headrest that is too far back. Overall, Dodge has the potential to create a fantastic car if they address these issues with confidence and authority.

  2. Ola Eichmann 2024-08-04

I bought my car brand new from the State of Georgia. It only had around 116 miles and came fully loaded with a Beats audio system, front collision mitigation system, and a large LCD monitor for all car functions. Overall, it has been a great car without any problems until 3 weeks ago when a light ticking sound started coming from the engine. I checked my oil level and it was good, but I still changed the oil since the problem was present. After the oil service, the sound went away for a day but then continued, resulting in a loss of power that week. I took it to a local dealer with 70K miles on it and they said that a coil misfired from the cylinder and needed replacement. I paid for the repairs only to have it become disabled a week later. I'm feeling frustrated now, considering I'm still paying for this car which is still fairly new to me. I took it to a Dodge dealer and was told that it will need all rocker arms, 2 cams, and a few other components, which will cost around $2000! It's nonsense...I feel like letting them come get this car. And keep in mind, I never neglected the maintenance on it. I was always on time with the preventive maintenance as this is an investment. It has only been driven on 5 out of town trips, maybe totaling 4K miles, while the others were around town. Has anyone else had any defects similar to my vehicle? I still have my 2005 Chevy Avalanche that I've never had to go inside the engine to repair, and a Mitsubishi Galant I had since 2002 and sold before I purchased this Charger that I never had any engine problems with until after 13 years of owning it, which I also purchased new.

  3. Nathanael Dicki 2024-07-26

So, I recently purchased a 2016 Charger SXT 3.6 V6 Rallye fully loaded based on expert reviews. However, my experience with the car has been different from what I expected. While the car has some great features, there are some areas that could use improvement. For instance, the styling could be more exciting and the interior could be less bland. Despite this, the instrument cluster is impressive and easy to navigate, allowing you to focus on driving. The seats are also very comfortable and have many adjustments. The infotainment system is responsive and easy to navigate, although I have had to reset it a few times. While the Uconnect system has some issues, the navigation system works well. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but it's worth considering if you're in the market for a new vehicle.Let's talk about the performance of the car. Unfortunately, the power output of the supposed 300 hp V6 is lacking. As someone who lives in Colorado and has driven 650 miles in the car, I can say that it struggles with power. In comparison, my friend's 2008 Toyota Camry has better power. Even the Audi A4, with an 80 hp deficit, feels more powerful. The AWD system can be frustrating to use. It stays off and leaves the car in RWD normally, only activating if the temperature is 40° or lower, if the wipers are used for an amount of time, or if sports mode is activated. This can lead to burning more gas without any real benefits. Unfortunately, the driver has no control over the system, which can be frustrating. The car also handles like a grandpa boat, which can be disappointing for those who enjoy driving aggressively. When I tried to return the car, I found that it had depreciated $10,000.00 within 250 miles of driving it, which was unexpected. I hope this information helps others make an informed decision about this car.Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. In my opinion, this car might not be the best option out there. I made the mistake of purchasing it and I regret it a lot. I think there are better options available for the same price. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Love everything about this car! I've had it for over 3 years and it still feels as great as the day I bought it!

I've owned my Charger Hellcat for about 15 months and I absolutely love it! The combination of power, sound, comfort, looks, and value is unbeatable. Every second behind the wheel is pure joy. The only downside is that the mileage isn't great and it's not the most agile car, but everything else is top notch. I have absolutely no reservations about my decision to buy the Hellcat.

  4. Dax Feil 2024-10-12

I've had the car for about a year and a half and I really like it. I haven't had any problems with it and it's fun to drive. It's kind of sporty for a sedan and pretty fast for a 6cyl. Katy Chrysler Dodge Jeep gave me a good deal and I'm happy with my purchase so far! The only thing is, I wish I would have gotten the RT or Scat Pack with the V8!

  5. Angus Daniel 2024-09-07

This car is amazing! You can drive it every day and it's sure to turn heads. However, it's worth noting that high mileage may decrease its value. Overall, it's a great choice and definitely a head-turner!
