From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHRYSLER VOYAGER. AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, THE DEFOGGER FAILED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. THE DRIVER HAD TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO CLEAN THE WINDOWS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL FAILURES WITH THE VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED. THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT AND THE SERPENTINE BELT WAS REPLACED ON FIVE OCCASIONS. THE STEERING WAS REPLACED INCORRECTLY BY A DEALER AND WAS AUTHORIZED BY THE MANUFACTURER TO BE REPLACED. THE BRAKES AND THE HEATING SYSTEM WERE REPLACED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY; HOWEVER, THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED FOUR TIMES. THE CONTACT WAS CHARGED $100 PER VISIT. INVOICES ARE AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. A COMPLAINT WAS ALSO FILED WITH THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL. THE CONTACT IS DISABLED AND AWARE OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED IN THE NUMEROUS VEHICLE FAILURES. ON MARCH 27, 2008, THE DEALER REPLACED THE MANIFOLD AND CYLINDER. ON APRIL 14, 2008, WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AND WOULD BE WILLING TO DO A BUYOUT. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,995.

SOMETIMES THEY WON'T SHUT OFF AND OTHER TIMES THEY WILL NOT COME ON AT ALL OR STOP RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR VIEW. I ALSO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE SERPENTINE BELTS POPPING OFF THE DRIVE LINE LEAVING YOU WITH NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES AND COMPLETELY DISABLES THE VEHICLE. I ALSO EXPERIENCE ISSUES WITH THE REAR SHOCKS. THE BOLTS COME LOOSE AND DETACHES THE REAR SHICK FROM THE VAN LEAVING IT QUITE UNCONTROLLABLE WHILE DRIVING. ALL 3 ISSUES HAPPENS ON MANY OCCASIONS. BUT WHAT WE ALSO DISCOVERED WAS THE TOWER MOUNT (THAT CONNECTS THE STRUT TO THE BODY FRAME) WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. THE REST OF THE BODY HAS VERY LITTLE RUST. MY MECHANIC CONTACTED SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS TO FIND OUT ABOUT A REPAIR KIT FOR THIS PROBLEM, LEARNED THAT THESE DEALERSHIPS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR COURTESY VANS. BECAUSE THE TOWER MOUNT IS SUCH AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE WORKING OF THE VEHICLE, I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THERE SHOULD BE NO WAY THAT WATER CAN GET UP AND STAY IN THE TOWER MOUNT AND CAUSE THE MOUNT TO RUST OUT. *JB

    Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager that I purchased back in 1999. At the time of purchase, it had 57,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I did experience some transmission problems within the first few weeks of owning it, which required a new transmission. Since then, I have taken good care of the vehicle, but it seems that it needs another transmission at 162,000 miles. I have also had to have the A/C fixed a few times, but unfortunately, it has quit again. Additionally, the body integrity has not been great. Despite these issues, I have enjoyed owning this vehicle and have had no problems with any other vehicles I have owned. However, I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler product.     We are so glad we purchased this high-mileage van second-hand! It's perfect for a family. We highly recommend the 'Grand' version for a little extra 'trunk' space. While there are a few minor issues, such as the rear windshield wipers not always working and the front wipers sometimes taking a moment to turn off, overall we are very satisfied with our purchase. It's important to note that Voyagers, along with other Dodge/Plymouth vehicles, may require a new transmission every 50k miles or so, which can be costly ($1000+). However, we were aware of this before purchasing, got a great deal, and still love the van. For us, the overall long-term cost was worth it. We encourage you to consider this when making your decision.

    We purchased this van brand new in October of 1995, and were lucky enough to get one of the first of the new design. It has now clocked up 100k miles. When we bought it, we also purchased the 7/70k extended warranty, which proved to be a wise decision as it covered a couple of major repairs, even 5 years after purchase, including a transmission problem and a water pump. The only other issues we've had were in the last year, including a major brake system overhaul, which I consider a maintenance item, an a/c compressor, and most recently a new cylinder head due to a broken rocker arm. During the first 7 years of ownership, we had no repair costs, and during the 8th year, the total repair cost was around $2000.

    Our '96 Grand Voyager has had little problems. I'm glad to hear that you picked up an extended service contract from Chrysler when you bought it used. The only thing you had major work done on was the A/C, which is great. It sounds like it runs clean and smooth and has good mileage.
