Common Dodge Charger problems
The Dodge Charger is a popular car known for its performance and style. However, like any vehicle, it can have its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Dodge Charger owners:
- Window Failure: Window failure is another common problem reported by Dodge Charger owners. The windows may not go up or down properly, or they may stop working altogether. This is often due to a cable failure in the window regulator or a failed motor.
- Check Engine Light due to Failed Thermostat: A failed thermostat can cause the check engine light to come on in the Dodge Charger. The thermostat keeps the engine from overheating by controlling how much coolant flows through the engine block. If it fails, overheating can occur, causing damage to other parts of the car.
- Wiring Electrical Issues: Electrical issues are common in Dodge Chargers due to worn-out wiring harnesses. The wiring harnesses can wear out over time due to stress or corrosion on the wires themselves, causing them to break down and fail.
- Noises When Turning: Squeaking while turning is a common problem in Dodge Chargers. This problem occurs when making a sharp turn and hearing a squeaking sound coming from the car's steering rack. The cause is typically due to worn parts or loose bolts on the vehicle's steering rack or suspension system.
- Musty Odor in AC System: A musty odor in the AC system is also common among Dodge Chargers. The most common cause of this problem is a clogged cabin air filter, which can be easily fixed by removing it and cleaning it with soap and water before reinstalling it back into place.
- Difficulty Filling the Fuel Tank: One of the most common Dodge Charger issues reported by actual owners is difficulty filling the fuel tank. The problem stems from a faulty gas emissions sensor when trying to fill up the tank. To resolve this, replace the gas emissions sensor with one that fits correctly.
- Leaks from Differentials and Axles: Leaks from differentials and axles are common problems reported by actual owners of this vehicle. Rear differential and axle seals are prone to leaks due to wear and tear over time. This can cause fluid loss in certain areas of the vehicle's drivetrain system.
- Automatic Transmission Leaks: One of the most common problems with automatic transmissions is leaks from the electrical connector. This can cause fluid loss and damage to the transmission.
- Power Window Failure: Many Dodge Charger owners have reported that one or more of their power windows have become inoperative. This problem is often caused by a failure of the window motor or a broken cable in the regulator mechanism. To fix this problem, the window motor and regulator may need to be replaced as an assembly.
It's important to note that not all Dodge Chargers will experience these problems, and many owners have reported having trouble-free vehicles. However, being aware of these common issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions when purchasing a used Dodge Charger.

- Summary: I own a 2019 Dodge Charger, and it has an open recall for the airbag inflator, which poses a serious safety risk. Despite the recall being issued over six months ago, replacement parts are still unavailable. Due to this safety concern, I am unable to drive my vehicle far from home, significantly impacting my usage. Additionally, I used to rent this vehicle on Turo to generate income, but it has been delisted from the platform because of the unresolved recall. I am still responsible for monthly loan payments of $420 and insurance payments of over $400 every month which is causing me financial loss without the ability to safely operate or rent out my car. I have contacted dealerships multiple times, but the parts continue to be delayed with no estimated resolution.

At the dealer I was initially quoted a price over $2,000 and I know from researching the internet many many many others have had this issue. I contacted both Chrysler and a local dealership. The dealership at my 2nd visit replaced the screen for free under a goodwill repair, and Chrysler also contacted me later promised to get the issue resolved if the dealership could not help me. I am reporting this issue because it is a significant defect that could affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Charger so far. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and I have to say, I'm blown away by the power of this car! It's really solid all around and such a joy to drive. I've been driving a 6 cylinder Nissan Maxima and Altima for the past 7 years, and the difference is night and day. While the Nissan has some great features, it's just not as solid or quiet as the Charger. Plus, I'm getting about 17 mpg with the Charger, which isn't too bad. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car.

It's great to hear about your experience with the 2012 Charger RT! It's clear that you have a lot of knowledge and passion for Chrysler products, especially classic Mopar Muscle Cars. The 2011 Charger redesign definitely caught your attention and it's fantastic that you were able to purchase one with all the features you wanted. The total cost without tax of $31,400 is definitely a great deal for such a high-quality car. It's great to hear that you're impressed with the handling and interior quality, and I'm sure others would appreciate your recommendation of this vehicle. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

After driving the 2011 R/T for most of the year, I was already familiar with most of the features. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the significant improvement in handling and power that this beast brings to the table. On the highway, you can easily top 100 mph without the pedal getting halfway down and still be treated to a symphony from the engine. This prompted an unprintable exclamation of approval from my first passenger. The auto mode sets the suspension for maximum comfort, and even in the sharpest turns, the car remains level. Sport mode unleashes the car's maximum performance. The fuel economy is about the same as I had with the R/T, although that's more due to San Diego traffic than anything else.

I never thought I would own a police car, but now I do! It drives like a brand new car, handles like a dream, and performs like a race car. Although there are some downsides, like no door handles on the rear and windows that can only be controlled from the driver's seat, I found it at an auction for a great price - 60% lower than the going rate for the same auto. However, it's important to factor in additional costs when buying one of these super fast heavy duty autos. Some auction services charge a buyer's premium of 5 to 20%, so be sure to inspect it before buying. But don't worry, with a little bit of work, you can have a great car at a fraction of the cost! Here's what I did: 1. Dashboard needed covers for center where cop stuff was. Charge port panels. Ebay. Center console also ebay item. 2. Spare tire and jack. Ebay as well. 3. Tires - do not buy the cop tires, they are $400 each. Brake pads all the way around. 4. Control arms - 4 in front. 5. Shocks in rear. 6. Struts in front pair. 7. Tune up - be warned, spark plugs are $17.50 each and there are 16 in total. 8. Transmission service - fluid filter. That's everything! I bought a 2013 Charger police pursuit for $6,500, which is a steal compared to the $15,000 it would cost at a dealer. After buying new tires, control arms, struts, shocks, brake pads, a spare tire and jack, and doing a tune-up and transmission service, I spent $8,295. Tax and plates are not included, but it's still less than buying anywhere else. And the best part? It's 100% correct! The doors are bulletproof, the seats are stab-proof, and it's faster than most cars out there. It's a blast to drive and many people think you're a cop, so they slow down and get out of your way. Some even give you food and drinks! Once a cop didn't even pull out running radar - he just waved and I waved back. I almost had a heart attack as I was speeding and could have been in jail, but it was a funny experience. I don't speed anymore, though - I figured my luck had been used up with that break.

The car has less than 7,000 miles and looks great. However, there is an annoying plastic rattle in the console dash that was noticed after one of several factory warranty repairs. The dealer said that this noise is common and that a replacement would not be worth the cost. Additionally, the push button starter stalls most of the time, but the cost to replace it is not worth the money for a car with a low resale value.
Ernesto Bailey 2025-06-13
Vehicle year: 2011
I purchased a new Dodge Charger and was excited to bring it home. The car's style and body are impressive, and I was looking forward to the reported great gas mileage. However, upon receiving the keys, I encountered issues with the door sensor and key recognition. Despite having the sensors changed and keys reprogrammed, the car continued to have problems, such as stalling while driving and displaying 'Key Not Detected.' I have taken the car in for repairs three times, but unfortunately, a permanent solution has not been found yet. Additionally, the console has frozen up, making it impossible to adjust the AC/Heater settings, volume, or radio options. As a result, I am disappointed with my 27k investment. I hope that Dodge will take my concerns seriously and work towards a resolution.

I strongly advise against purchasing a Dodge Charger. In my experience, both of the vehicles I purchased had significant mechanical issues that resulted in the dealer buying them back. The second vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine failure and electrical malfunction within two weeks of ownership. The first vehicle had persistent vibration issues and frequent misfires in the cylinders, which Dodge claimed were normal. Unfortunately, both cars were a complete nightmare. While they may have good gas mileage, I cannot recommend them based on my personal experience.

I purchased a Dodge Charger 8 months ago and unfortunately, my car has been broken into twice. It seems that the thieves used some kind of slim jim device and it took only seconds for them to gain access. It is important to note that Chargers may be vulnerable to this type of break-in. Therefore, I strongly recommend that anyone who owns a Charger should consider installing an alarm system to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
Norberto Turcotte 2025-05-21

I often get asked if my Charger is fast, but while it's not slow, its weight of over 4100 pounds means it takes some time to get going. According to various reviews, it can do 0-60 in 5 seconds, making it a sporty car rather than a sports car. The interior is nice, and the stereo (especially the high-end one) is good, although some may find the bass lacking. The seats aren't fully leather, but considering the price (under $40k), it's understandable. Some people think the windows are too small, but I don't mind. I'm not sure what the stability control is for, as it's never kicked in for me. The ride is comfortable, although it's too long to fit in my garage with my motorcycle (which I traded for a KIA Sorento that did fit).
