The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2008 Porsche Cayenne problems

The 2008 Porsche Cayenne has been known to have several common problems, primarily involving the engine, transmission, and PCM (Porsche Communication Management) system.

  • Engine Issues: One of the most prevalent issues with the 2008 Porsche Cayenne is bore scoring, which affects the engine's cylinder bores. This problem is more common in cold climates and can lead to engine failure.
  • Transmission Problems: Early Porsche Cayenne owners, including those with 2008 models, commonly experienced heavy downshifts from the transmission. This issue is often misdiagnosed as a physical failure in the transmission itself, when the more likely cause is the valve body assembly within the transmission. Failure of the mechanism can lead to some wild gear shifts.
  • PCM Issues: Many Cayenne owners have reported random and weird behavior from the PCM system, particularly PCM3.1. Problems include the PCM unit restarting every 2-3 minutes, map not loading, loading in the wrong language, turning on and off randomly, and other strange behaviors. These issues can be caused by either electrical or physical malfunctions within the unit or by software updates that result in unstable working conditions.
  • Maintenance and Wear Items: The 2008 Porsche Cayenne also has issues with various wear items and maintenance requirements, such as parking brake dampeners, coolant leaks due to thermostat failure, water pump replacement, driver side DRL condensation, high pressure fuel pump replacement, difficulty starting the car, door cable replacement, driveshaft and support bearing replacement, left horn replacement, coolant leaks, ignition coils, vacuum pump replacement, thermostat housing, thermostat, and coolant replacement, passenger side mirror adjustment, driveshaft support replacement, front control arms, strut top mounts, sway bar bushings, and droplinks, engine and transmission mounts replacement, coolant tank replacement and coolant pipe fitting pinning up, rear wheel bearings, water intrusion from drain ports, and crankshaft position sensor replacement .

These common problems with the 2008 Porsche Cayenne can lead to significant repair costs and should be considered when purchasing a used vehicle of this model year. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become more serious and expensive to repair.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-14
  • VIN: WP1AD29P08L
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2008 PORSCHE CAYENNE ON 3/14/18. HERE WE ARE 3 MONTHS LATER AND I NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL COMING FROM THE DRIVER REAR TIRE. I USED GOOGLE TO DIAGNOSE MY CONCERNS AND FOUND THIS: SEPTEMBER 25, 2017 ' PORSCHE IS RECALLING MORE THAN 50,000 CAYENNE SUVS BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMP FILTER FLANGES COULD LEAK GAS AND AT THE LEAST CREATE AN ODOR OF FUEL, AND AT THE MOST CREATE A FIRE HAZARD IF FUEL HITS A HOT IGNITION SOURCE. THE RECALLED GAS-POWERED VEHICLES INCLUDE THE 2003-2006 CAYENNE S AND CAYENNE TURBO, 2004-2006 CAYENNE AND 2006 CAYENNE S "TITANIUM" EDITION VEHICLES. SO, I TOOK MY CAR TO GET DIAGNOSED AT DEAN MCREARY PORSCHE IN MOBILE, AL AND WAS ADVISED THAT I HAVE A FLANGE AND SEALING RING LEAK AND THAT IT WOULD BE 1124.00 TO REPAIR. I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS DESCRIBED IN THIS RECALL. THIS IS A HAZARD. SOMEONE COULD DIE. I THEN CALLED PORSCHE NORTH AMERICAN AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE RECALL IS VIN SPECIFIC AND I DO NOT QUALIFY. THIS MAKES NO SENSE AND THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS. PORSCHE IS CONSTANTLY MAKING CARS THAT ARE UNSAFE AND WHEN A PROBLEMS OCCURS, THEY DO NOT WANT TO FIX IT.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-08
  • VIN: WP1AA29P48L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE CAR CUT OUT AS I WAS CROSSING A INTERSECTION WHILE IN MOTION LEAVING THE CAR DISABLED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION, LUCKILY OTHER DRIVERS SAW THE PROBLEM AND WENT AROUND ME. ALL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON INCLUDING THE IGNITION LOCK FAULT. I TURNED IT OFF AND AFTER 2 MINUTES IT RESTARTED. THE NEXT DAY THE CAR WOULD NOT START, THE IGNITION LOCK FAULT CAME ON, AND THEN ALL OF THE OTHER WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER AND WAS LOCKED IN PARK. THIS HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE IN FEB 2017 WHEN A CORRODED WIRES WERE FOUND IN A MAIN BUNDLE OF WIRES IN THE DRIVERS FOOTWELL. THERE WAS NO WATER ON THAT AREA AND NOR HAS THERE BEEN ANY WATER ON THE CAR OR THE FOOTWELL. I HAVE HAD WEATHERTECH MATS IN PLACE HTE WHOLE TIME TO PREVENT THAT. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN THAT IT COULD GO DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF OPERATION NOT JUST A STARTING ISSUE. I HAVE REVIEWED TECHNICAL BULLETIN NHTSA 10056337 WHICH DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY EXPLANATION FOR IMPLYING THAT THE LACK OF FEEDBACK HAS LEAD TO THE FACTORY NOT KNOWING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. PORSCHE NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM THE IMPROPERLY SPLICED WIRES AND THE BUNDLE NEED TO BE RETROFITTED IN A WAY TO PROTECT THEM FROM ONGOING CORROSION THAT IN MY CASE HAPPENED HAPPENED TWICE THE SECOND TIME ON 6,000 MILES AFTER THE LAST IN A CAR THAT IS KEPT IN A GARAGE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-22
  • VIN: WP1AB29P98L
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: COOLANT DISTRIBUTOR BOLTED TO THE BACK OF ENGINE BLOCK HAS A GLUED -IN PIPE THAT CONNECTS TO A HOSE. THE GLUED-IN PIPE IS LEAKING AND HALF WAY PUSHED OUT OF THE DISTRIBUTOR. THE IMMINENT FAILURE OF THIS PART COULD HAVE CAUSED IMMEDIATE OVERHEAT AND FIRE DUE TO CATASTROPHIC COOLANT SYSTEM FAILURE. THE REPAIR IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. PORSCHE HAS A NEW PART THAT HAS THE PIPE THREADED IN INSTEAD OF GLUED. PORSCHE SHOULD RECALL THIS AND PAY FOR THE REPAIR. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW AND SAFETY ISSUE. IMAGINE 8 GALLONS OF HOT COOLANT DISCHARGING ALL OVER, SAY A MOTORCYCLIST GOING 70 MPH. THIS ISSUE WAS NOTICED WHILE DOING OTHER COOLANT SYSTEM MAINTENANCE THAT WAS ALSO NECESSITATED BY POOR DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE.

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY MY TEMP GAUGE STARTED CLIMBING AND THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF OF THE FREEWAY AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A PORSCHE MECHANIC. HE LATER IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS THE PIPE OR TUBE THAT CONNECTS TO THE WATER/COOLANT DISTRIBUTOR CAME LOOSE SPILLING ALL OF THE COOLANT OUT, WHICH COULD OF LED TO A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. NOT SURE WHAT THE COST IS GOING TO BE YET. MY MECHANIC SAID HE'S SEEN THIS FAILURE ON 957 CAYENNE V8S MANY TIMES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS THING TO HAVE HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY.

Negative 2008 Porsche Cayenne car reviews

  1. Ricardo Howell 2024-09-07

The 2008 model of the car has a puttering sound coming from the rear passenger side, which is a normal occurrence. However, this is not the case with previous models and is caused by the fuel pump. The back of the car had two areas of horrible paint runs, which were wet sanded off. Additionally, the entire roof was wet sanded due to flaws left in the clear coat by the protective wrap. There is a great deal of road noise and in-cabin noise caused by creaking back seats and various rattles. Excessive air noise is also coming in from the front passenger window, which can be stopped by pressing against the lower inside window. The dealer has confirmed that these issues are normal. Rest assured, we have taken care of all the necessary repairs and maintenance to ensure that the car is in top condition.

  2. Benny Effertz 2024-08-23

Although the Cayenne is sporty and zippy when necessary, it may not be the best fit for everyone. For starters, it is quite small, so if you have kids or need to carry a lot of groceries, you may want to consider other options. Additionally, the truck may not have the power you'd expect from its appearance, which can be disappointing. Lastly, reversing can be a challenge due to limited visibility, especially if you have a car seat directly behind the driver's side. Overall, it's important to consider your specific needs before deciding if the Cayenne is the right SUV for you.

  3. Jarred Gislason 2024-07-01

I've had my Cayenne for over a year now and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. When my transmission got stuck on 3rd gear at 3,000 miles, my dealer in Manhattan towed it and fixed it. However, the same thing happened again when I had about 12,000 miles and they had to tow and repair it again. On top of that, I was disappointed when my dealer couldn't provide me with a loaner car, as they were all reserved for customers coming in for an oil change. This left me in a difficult situation, as I had to pick up my son from school, see customers, and fly overseas that day. I had to rent a car to continue with my day. Additionally, I had to replace my oxygen sensor and experienced issues with my navigation and horn. Overall, I'm not very happy with my experience and am considering getting out of my lease.

I purchased this car back in March of 2007. Although I have had a few issues with it, the dealer has been helpful in resolving them. Initially, there were some paint runs on both sides of the license plate, but the dealer was able to wet sand them off. There is a puttering sound that comes from the rear passenger area, which the dealer and Porsche have explained is normal for all 2008 models due to something with the fuel pump. Recently, I returned to the dealer when I discovered some splotches under the clear coat on the entire hood. Again, the dealer was able to wet sand them off. While the acceleration is not as good as the S model, I still enjoy driving it.

You've got a great machine on your hands! The speed is impressive and it handles really well. The new front end is a fantastic improvement over the '06 model, although the back could use some revision. While it's true that there's no Bluetooth or MP3 dock, both of these features are available on the X5. However, it's important to note that there's really no comparison between the X5 and the S - this machine is incredibly fast and well-built. I was also pleasantly surprised by how fuel efficient it is, with straight freeway driving at 22, and mixed city/freeway at 17 to 18 (based on my experience in the first 4000 miles).

Overall, I have been owning the 2008 Cayenne for 11 months and it has been a great joy to drive. The combination of good power and torque from the newly designed V6 direct injection engine is impressive.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Cayenne, which I purchased in October. While I have enjoyed driving it, I have noticed some issues with the 4 wheel drive system. The shifting can be jerky and there is a delay when starting from a standstill. Additionally, I was told by the dealer that there was no speed limit when driving in 4 wheel high, but I have since learned that this is not true. While the Cayenne handles well and rides smoothly, I have found that my 1999 Jeep Wrangler has a superior 4 wheel drive system. If you are looking for an off-road vehicle, I would recommend a Jeep. However, if you are looking for a sports car with all wheel drive, the Cayenne is a great choice. I have been very pleased with the fit and finish of my Cayenne. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

Spent about 2 weeks looking for the right car. Knew it when I found the GTS. Trading out of a Land Rover Sport, but that's another story... Porsche has done a great job both inside and out. The power out of the V-8 is great, and the fit and finish are also very nice.

I have a big family of 5 and this SUV fits us perfectly. It gives an amazing ride and has the most beautiful interior you could see. The warranty covers practically everything. This is an all around awesome vehicle. I highly recommend it!
