Common 2009 Dodge Charger problems
The Dodge Charger, particularly the 2009 model, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Faulty Transmission: Transmission issues have been a significant problem for Dodge Charger owners, with numerous reports of gear slippage, intermittent hard shifting, and decreased acceleration. In some cases, the Charger has been known to switch gears on its own. Chrysler issued a software update for the transmission control module to address this issue.
- Faulty Windows: Window failure is another common problem in Dodge Chargers, with many owners reporting issues with the windows not going up or down properly, or stopping altogether. This problem is typically caused by a cable failure in the window regulator or a failed motor.
- Check Engine Light: The Dodge Charger is known to have check engine light issues, often caused by a failed thermostat. When the thermostat fails, it can lead to overheating and potential damage to other parts of the vehicle. If you're experiencing this issue, it's recommended to take your car to a mechanic to replace the thermostat as soon as possible.
- Wiring Electrical Issues: Electrical problems, such as worn-out wiring harnesses due to stress or corrosion, are common in Dodge Chargers. These issues can cause various electrical components to fail over time.
- Noises When Turning: Squeaking or ticking noises while turning are common problems in Dodge Chargers. These noises are typically caused by valves in the engine not closing properly or loose connecting rods in the engine knocking against each other.
- Musty Odor in AC System: A musty odor in the air conditioning system is a common problem in Dodge Chargers, often caused by a clogged cabin air filter. This issue can be easily resolved by cleaning the filter with soap and water before reinstalling it.
- Fuel Tank Being Hard to Fill: Difficulty filling the fuel tank is a common problem reported by Dodge Charger owners. This issue is typically caused by a faulty gas emissions sensor, which can be resolved by replacing the sensor with one that fits correctly.
- Leaks from Differentials and Axles: Leaks from differentials and axles are common problems in Dodge Chargers, often caused by wear and tear over time. These leaks can lead to fluid loss in certain areas of the vehicle's drivetrain system, requiring immediate inspection and repair.
- Automatic Transmission Leaks: Leaks from the electrical connector are a common problem with automatic transmissions in Dodge Chargers. These leaks can cause various issues with the transmission, requiring professional inspection and repair.
It's important to note that these issues are not unique to the 2009 Dodge Charger and can be found in other model years as well. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address many of these problems, ensuring the longevity and reliability of your vehicle.

So far, my experience with my r/t has been trouble-free and enjoyable. Although I haven't received any tickets yet, I'm having a lot of fun driving it! However, I have noticed that the contitracs are not holding up as well as I had hoped. I had to have the tires rotated at 2000 miles, and I don't expect them to last the summer. Even though the primordial urge to do long Smokey burn-outs has diminished somewhat, I still enjoy driving it. At 2500 miles, the evic informed me that an oil change was needed. The dealer did the oil change for free per the agreement, which was great. They also informed me that my vin required fix rrt 09-019 no start/hard start/long crank. Although I haven't experienced the issue, I'm glad that I have the lifetime powertrain warranty and that I bought the maxcare lifetime warranty. My 2-year-old daughter loves the car and always says, 'black car! Zoom!'

We've owned this car for 5 months now and it's been a winner from the start. We test drove the Camaro, Challenger and this Charger R/T Daytona, but this car continues to impress us every time we drive it. The fuel economy is impressive overall, averaging 25 MPG on a 1500 round trip to Colorado, although it's not great in town. The ride is incredibly comfortable for a sports car of this caliber, with a great balance between tight handling and comfort. The uconnect, dash and console, embroidered leather heated seats, lighted cup holders, car information center (and on and on) are all outstanding features that have made driving for me and my family an enjoyable experience. And to top it off, the insurance classifies this as a four door sedan...SUCKAs :)

I can tell you really enjoy your 3.5HO v6 Charger SXT RWD! It sounds like a fun car to drive, with decent power and mileage. It's great that you have the skills to repair it yourself, although it's frustrating when parts are marked up by dealers or are hard to find. It's impressive that your car is 14 years old and still in great condition with over 165,000 miles. Overall, it seems like you have a lot to be happy about with your car!

I've only driven the car four times and every time I've been forced off the road by drivers trying to get a better look at it. It's crazy! I've only got 700 miles on it.

I bought the 2009 R/T R package (Road and Track) and I believe it is definitely worth the extra money. The handling has improved and the top line seats are a great addition. The only drawback is that they were (or at least at the time I bought) very hard to find. So far, the car has been great to drive and is very comfortable on road trips. I can drive all day long without any discomfort. I also opted for the upgraded sound system (Boston), which is the best sounding factory installed system I have ever had. I live in Wisconsin and drove once in the snow earlier this year. I am planning on driving year-round and from what I have experienced, the car should handle as well as any non 4X4. I just have to drive with common sense! The Dodge rebates, plus the lifetime warranty backed by the government, sealed the deal.

I purchased a 2007 Dodge Charger R/T, but unfortunately experienced significant issues with the vehicle. Despite attempts to resolve the problem with Dodge/Chrysler, the motor continues to knock and the issue remains unresolved. After researching customer reports on Edmunds.com, I have decided to recommend exploring alternative vehicle options. Thank you for considering my experience.
