Dodge Challenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of automobiles produced by American automobile manufacturer Dodge. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.

From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda.

The second generation, from model years 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda / Sapporo, a coupe version of an economical compact car.

The third and current generation is a full-size muscle car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

In November 2021, Stellantis announced that 2023 model year would be the final model year for both the LD Dodge Charger and LA Dodge Challenger, as the company will focus its future plans on electric vehicles rather than fossil fuel powered vehicles, due to tougher emissions standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency for the 2023 model year. Challenger production ended on December 22, 2023, and the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant will be re-tooled to assemble an electrified successor.

Common Dodge Challenger problems

Common Problems with Dodge Challenger Cars

Dodge Challenger cars have been known for their powerful engines and sleek design, but they are not without their fair share of issues. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of Dodge Challenger cars based on search results:

  1. Harsh Transmission Shifting: One of the most reported issues with Dodge Challenger cars is harsh transmission shifting. This problem is common in 2009-2016 models and is usually caused by fluid issues, failed sensors, or cold weather. The issue starts with a weird metallic noise when shifting and may progress to a noticeable thump from the transmission when shifting gears. In some cases, the transmission may not engage at all, causing the check engine light to come on. Dodge has released an updated TCM (Transmission Control Module) software to fix this issue.
  2. Power Steering Assembly Leaks: The 2010 Dodge Challenger models had issues with power steering assembly leaks. The corrugated links in the power steering pressure hose assembly have the tendency to separate, causing steering fluid leaks. Flammable fluid may drip on searing engine parts, which can ignite a vehicle fire. Dodge has issued a recall for this issue and will inspect and replace the faulty power steering pressure hose assembly for free if it’s affected by any recalls.
  3. Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Problem: The 2008-2021 Dodge Challenger models have been known to have issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). The TIPM controls all Dodge’s electrical operations, including activating the windshield wipers and fuel pump. It has a tendency to fail in some Dodge models, causing multiple annoying complications such as airbags deploying unexpectedly or not deploying as intended, the starter crank failing, and the horn going off randomly. If you suspect that your Challenger has a bad TIPM, it’s best to ask a professional for proper diagnosis and repair as soon as you can.
  4. Crankshaft Position Sensor Signal Loss: The 2009-2010 Dodge Challenger models are known to have crankshaft position sensor signal loss, which may trigger the check engine light with error code P0339. This issue usually happens out of the blue and may be repaired by adding a wedge or shim to your crankshaft sensor. However, this may not totally correct the problem. Your Challenger may need a flex plate replacement to totally resolve the issue.
  5. Alternator Failure: Some owners of 2011 Dodge Challenger models have experienced alternator problems, with some experiencing a distinct burning scent and abnormal squeaking noises from the hood. Some owners have experienced failure when driving, leading their Challengers to shut down and not restart. Dodge has issued a recall for the same since the alternator failure could lead to unexpected stalling, leading to crashes or accidents. Alternator failure could also lead to a short circuit and fire. Dodge fixed the issue by replacing the alternator.

In summary, Dodge Challenger cars are known for their powerful engines and sleek design, but they are not without their fair share of issues. Some of the most common problems reported by owners include harsh transmission shifting, power steering assembly leaks, Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) problem, crankshaft position sensor signal loss, and alternator failure. If you are considering purchasing a Dodge Challenger, it is important to be aware of these potential issues and to have them addressed by a professional as soon as possible.

Dodge Challenger

Is the Dodge Challenger a reliable car?

Dodge Challengers require repairs approximately 0.2 times yearly (about once every five years) compared to other mid-sized cars, which average 0.4 yearly repairs (every 2-3 years). This means you'll need repairs half as often as a typical mid-sized vehicle and routine maintenance can reduce this number further.

Do Dodge Challengers have issues?

Electrical Issues Caused by Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Some owners of the 2008-2021 Dodge Challenger have reported experiencing the well-known Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) problem, usually found in other Dodge models.

What are the disadvantages of the Dodge Challenger?

Poor Fuel Efficiency

The Dodge Challenger is notorious for its high fuel consumption. With a large engine and a heavy body, the Challenger's fuel efficiency is significantly lower than many other vehicles in its class. This can lead to frequent visits to the gas station and increased costs over time.

What is the life expectancy of a Dodge Challenger?

The Dodge Challenger may not be known for its reliability, but many owners have testified to its overall longevity. Based on many owner accounts and our research, the Dodge Challenger can reach or exceed 200,000 miles without major mechanical issues – thanks to the car's sturdy construction and build quality.

  • Summary: I purchased a DODGE 2023 CHALLENGER SRT HELLCAT WIDEBODY JAILBREAK with manual transmission in October 2023. In April of 2024 I noticed that the AC did not work when the vehicle was NOT in motion and the OUTSIDE temperature was more than 90 degrees. I took it to a local dealer ship and they kept troubleshooting the vehicle with Dodge and could not fix the issue. Come to find out, all 2023 manual transmission Challenger Hellcats have the same issue. This is effecting approximately 628+ vehicles. Dodge Care states they are aware of the issue and are working on it internally, however no ETA or timeline has been given to the customers of the affected vehicles. • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 2C3CDZJG8MH
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: On [XXX] I was traveling s/b on [XXX] in Florida in my Dodge Challenger which I purchased from New Smyrna Dodge this year. I was traveling approx 65 mph and all of a sudden the back of my drivers seat went back all the way putting me in a flat position against the rear seat. I was lucky enough to pull myself up and keep control of the vehicle. The incident could have been a disaster because my father was also riding in the vehicle on the passenger side. I pulled over on the median and checked the drivers seat thinking maybe the manual recline had just slipped. In doing so I saw that the metal frame on the right side of the seat had snapped where it connects to bottom of seat frame. Obviously it is a defect in the metal because the frame was not damaged in any way and metal just to broke(Snapped). Had it happened in an accident the injury could have been severe. These seat are suppose meet certain standards. I responded to The dealer today and spoke to a service representative who did agree it was probably a defect because he never heard of that happening but also said unfortunately you are just over warranty by three thousand miles. Stated you can leave car but it will involve full days labor taking seat apart. Doesn't say much for dealer mechanics. Also said there was no recall on it but admitted when it happened could have been serious accident. He also made no attempt to even go out and look at it. If in fact this is a defect people's lives could be in danger. If I wasn't able to pull myself up immediately to a sitting position we probably would have had an accident. The actions of this dealer did not surprise me at all. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The car rolled forward regardless of shifting the car in park, reverse, neutral, drive, etc. I had to stop the car with my brakes and then park the car with my emergency brake enabled to stop the car from rolling on its own. A driver could easily be killed by not reacting right to the car when it loses its driving shaft. The driver yoke looks like it could be part of the problem. The car is currently at the transmission repair shop for repair and a safety investigation.

Dodge Challenger 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-09
  • VIN: 2C3CDZGG4HH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My 2017 Dodge Challenger has an 8.4 UConnect touch screen that is experiencing the common delamination defect. There are no warning lights or codes, and my car has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance. It is currently available for inspection, but as it has escalated to a safety concern I do not know how long I can keep it in the car. The screen started delaminating 4 years ago, conveniently months after the car was no longer under the 3 year warranty. In 2020 the dealer charged me the $150 diagnostic fee, and then told me the only thing to do was spend another $1500 to replace the unit. The delamination is happening due to known manufacturer errors in the glue used, and is not exacerbated by owner misuse. After 4 years, the delaminating has spread to over half of the screen and "ghost touches" have increased in frequency so much that they have passed inconvenient/cosmetic and have become dangerous. The touch screen holds more than entertainment and comfort settings, it is also how performance features, and safety features are accessed. These ghost touches started as just changing the radio station, but now opens the performance app, which can not be used while in drive. It will also commonly call the SOS number. If this is activated, it will attempt an SOS call every 60 seconds and there is no way to shut it off. This is distracting to the point of danger at 75 MPH on the interstate. I would be less distracted using a cell phone than trying to ignore a screen flitting to something different every 2 seconds. The NHTSA defines distracted driving as "any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving." I am not distracted by my own poor choices, a recall needs to be made to protect the drivers of these vehicles.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-26
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 2C3CDYAG8DH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle is available for inspection. The issue caused a fire under my carport and within 30 feet of a neighbor's house. The car is immobile and still at the location of the incident, it has not been reproduced or inspected. there were no warning lamps at the time of the incident. The electrical system seemed to have several issues over the past years. The passenger side tail light would burn out at least twice a year. The driver's side window would go up and down when the car was off and ran out of battery. The vehicle would allow the key fob to be locked in the car. I took it to the dealer but they were unable to determine the cause. Most recently what a mechanic thought was the starter failed twice in less than six months. Last month, I went to start the car, and it started and then turned off. I heard a pop and crackling sound, and the trunk battery was on fire.

Latest negative Dodge Challenger car reviews

  1. Hoyt Ankunding 2024-09-28

    Vehicle year: 2015

We had a very concerning experience with our car that we purchased brand new from the dealership in Brandon, Florida. Less than a month later, we had our first close call with an accident when the vehicle suddenly lost all acceleration as we were pulling into oncoming traffic from a stop sign. The gear shift 'D' flashed red and the digital readout on the dashboard instructed us to 'Place vehicle in Park and shift to desired gear'. This meant that no matter where we were, whether in the middle of an intersection or while merging into oncoming traffic, we had to come to a complete stop and put the vehicle in 'Park' and then shift back into 'Drive'. Unfortunately, this has happened a total of 5 times, with two of those incidents being captured on video by my son who was driving the car. Despite our efforts, Dodge still has no idea what is causing the problem nor do they have any clue how to fix it. We have filed a Lemon Law suit and notified the NTSB as well as the Federal Trade Commission. We strongly advise against putting yourself, family members or innocent drivers at risk. This car needs to be considered for a Class Action Lawsuit against Dodge.

The 2019 Challenger R/T Hemi with 8-speed auto has only 150 miles on it, but unfortunately, the driver window got stuck and there was no power. However, I was able to find a solution to recalibrate the window stuck position on YouTube. After restarting the car a few times, the driver door started working again. Although this issue is covered under warranty, it is disappointing to experience it on a new car. Despite this, I remain confident in the quality of Lexus, Toyota, and Honda vehicles and will be exploring those options in the future.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack. I've had it for almost three years now and I have to say, it's been a blast to drive! The car is incredibly fast and responsive - just a tap on the gas pedal and it takes off like a rocket. Plus, it's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever owned, with plenty of trunk space to boot. Of course, like any car, it's not without its quirks. I did have a few issues with the rear backup camera and some U/Connect updates, as well as a couple of recalls. But overall, I've really enjoyed my time with the Challenger. The only thing I wish was better was the quality of some of the parts - the rubber molding around the driver's side door and the plastic rear lights could be improved. But even with those minor issues, I still think it's a great car. Thanks for listening!

When you buy something, you always hope that it will be the best fit for you. However, in this case, the interior is uncomfortable, and the gas and brake pedals are too far to the left, which can cause discomfort during long drives. Additionally, the radio's touch screen is difficult to see in daylight, and there are a lot of blind spots. In my opinion, the Dodge Quality is not up to par with other brands. I would recommend looking at other options and test driving them. Personally, I would rank the Mustang as number one, followed by the Camaro, Genesis, and Challenger.

I read all the reviews and although I dismissed the bad ones, I now realize that I should have taken them to heart. It seems that some people don't want to admit they bought a lower quality product. Unfortunately, these cars can be a pain to deal with. There is a loud ticking noise coming from under the hood (the dealer claims it's the injectors), the transmission slips, and the car is already rusting underneath. Additionally, the low tire pressure light is always on, no matter what. I understand that some may not find this review helpful, but I believe it is important to share my experience with Dodge's quality (which, in my opinion, is subpar).

Just a quick note, the dropdown menu didn't have my 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Plus 6.2 Ltr 2.4 Ltr supercharged Beast. I must say, this is a well-thought-out true muscle car that really excites the soul when unleashing the Beast! It was a great purchase of a vehicle that will be remembered for decades as a car that stayed true to its roots of the 70s. Even as we enter the EV era, every time I hit start on my Hellcat, I'm reminded of how far Dodge has come with its monstrous exhaust and supercharger whine. This is a drag beast, without apologies.

There is nothing bad I can say about this car. I loved how it drove, rode, and how it felt safe. My only issue was that it doesn't have good visibility when reversing, which a back-up camera would help with. Unfortunately, mine didn't have one. Additionally, it's a big car, so navigating it down the narrow streets of Los Angeles was a bit of a pain. However, overall, it's a great, safe, fast, and stylish car!

The car is great, but there are a few issues that need to be addressed. The shifters on the steering wheel are quite inconvenient and have caused accidental hits while driving. Additionally, there is an annoying clicking sound that seems to be coming from a vent issue. Despite taking the car to three different shops and spending hundreds of dollars, there still seems to be a brake issue. Overall, the car is good, but there are some areas where Dodge could have put more thought into the design.
