2018 Dodge Challenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of automobiles produced by American automobile manufacturer Dodge. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.

From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda.

The second generation, from model years 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda / Sapporo, a coupe version of an economical compact car.

The third and current generation is a full-size muscle car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

In November 2021, Stellantis announced that 2023 model year would be the final model year for both the LD Dodge Charger and LA Dodge Challenger, as the company will focus its future plans on electric vehicles rather than fossil fuel powered vehicles, due to tougher emissions standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency for the 2023 model year. Challenger production ended on December 22, 2023, and the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant will be re-tooled to assemble an electrified successor.

Common 2018 Dodge Challenger problems

The 2018 Dodge Challenger, a modern muscle car with a rich history, is known for its powerful engine options and sleek design. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Emergency Brake Failing to Disengage: Some 2018 Challenger owners have reported that the emergency brake fails to disengage properly, which can lead to difficulty driving or even damage to the vehicle's tires and brakes. This problem is often caused by improper adjustment of the emergency brake and can typically be fixed under warranty. However, out-of-warranty repairs can cost around $200.
  • Key Fobs Not Working: Key fobs on some 2018 Dodge Challenger models may fail to function properly, often due to dead batteries. Replacing the battery in the key fob is a relatively simple and inexpensive fix, costing less than $1. However, in rare cases, the key receiver in the car may fail, which would require a more costly replacement of around $450.
  • Transmission Shift Quality Issues: Transmission shift quality issues have been reported by owners of the 2018 Dodge Challenger, with some experiencing rough or delayed shifts. This problem can lead to a less enjoyable driving experience and may require professional attention.
  • Honk, Hiss, or Groan Noise From Steering at Low Speeds: Some drivers have reported unusual noises coming from the steering system when driving at low speeds. This issue may be related to the power steering system and could require professional diagnosis and repair.

While these common problems can be frustrating for 2018 Dodge Challenger owners, it is important to note that many of these issues can be addressed through software updates, adjustments, or repairs covered under warranty. Additionally, the 2018 Challenger has a reputation for lasting around 200,000 miles with proper maintenance, making it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a powerful and stylish muscle car.

  • VIN: 2C3CDZFJ1JH
  • Components: STRUCTURE,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Since the day of delivery, the 2018 Dodge Challenger I purchased from Carvana has been non-operational due to a dead battery and significant engine problems. Despite multiple attempts to start the vehicle, it required towing to the dealer for repairs. Additionally, the car was delivered with illegally dark tint on all windows, including the front windshield, which is not compliant with California state regulations. These issues have rendered the vehicle unusable and have not been adequately addressed, posing safety and compliance concerns

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-03
  • VIN: 2C3CDZAG2JH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Rear backup camera will sometimes either be distorted or have a black screen while in reverse. This is a safety hazard as dodge challengers have large blind spots and makes it difficult to see when backing up without the rear camera. This has almost caused me to hit another car and pedestrians as it's hard to see them due to the blind spots and not having the assistance of the camera. While driving in the rain, the front windshield will have streaks across the whole window, making it very difficult to see while driving in the rain. Windshield wipers have been replaced several times but issue continues to happen. The breaks will shake when breaking. This causes the car to not want to break at times. I have brought my car back to the dealership on several different occasions for this issue and all they have done is resurfaced the rotors and have changed the break pads and told me that there is nothing else they can do and to break more aggressively as there is a film on the rotors causing the car to shake when breaking.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
  • VIN: 2C3CDZGG3JH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: UConnect LCD Control Screen is completely on the fritz due to adhesive de-lamination. The screen will frequently and randomly ‘ghost touch’ itself to turn the heat all the way up, turn the media volume all the way up, call contacts, adjust the clock, switch screens, etc while I’m driving. It is available for inspection upon request. Car has become a danger to drive as a result. Having to constantly fumble with the screen to not be roasted by the heat or have my eardrums blown out by max volume media while driving is significantly more distracting and dangerous than being on the phone while driving. It isn’t something that happens once or twice on a drive, it will touch the screen ~30 times a minute. This is a well known problem with UConnect systems in jeeps and dodges. You can look it up online or speak candidly with any dodge dealer. When I called dealers in my area directly they said this is a problem they see everyday. Vehicle is being taken to be inspected 6 days after reporting this event to UConnect and dodge as that is the earliest appointment they could get me at an approved service center. Absolutely 0 warning this would happen and no functional way to turn off the screen in the meantime. If you try to turn it off, when it senses it touched itself it just turns right back on. I’m being required to pay $300 out of pocket + costs for a rental to get the diagnosis.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2018 Dodge Challenger. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30 MPH, the center master display screen started to randomly switch from function to function, and unintendedly started a telephone call. The contact became aware that a bubble had appeared in the center of the screen and was growing larger. The contact stated that the screen had started to delaminate. The contact stated that the failure of the control screen was intermittent at first but had become constant. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to a delamination of the control screen. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 2C3CDZGG7JH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The Uconnect Infosystem 8.4 display with navigation system has become defective. Because of this defect the system takes control of the infosystem switching between screens and options and as it gets worse it could possibly get into the power modes and other engine controls by itself without the driver knowing along with taking control of heating, cooling, lights and other safety features on the car itself without the driver knowing. Besides being annoying this is a huge safety concern that they are well aware of as there is extensive back ordering of replacement systems. In the dealership I go to they have 24 replacement units on back order. At roughly $1,800 per unit the company won't take responsibility for this defect.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-01
  • VIN: 2C3CDZAG8JH
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Per the car fax report provided at time of purchase. This car supposedly not been in any accidents. I noticed that the lights when on are not leveled. I took it to a local Dodge dealer to fix and to my surprise we were told that the lights were not leveled because the car had been in a wreck before. There is no physical damage from what we can see however the cost to repair or level required extra work in order to complete and cost was very high. I feel that Toyota of Aneheim sold us a car knowing it had been in a wreck. When I called to see if they would repair they said no because I cannot prove that the problem existed before we purchased the r car. We have not been on any car accident and feel like Toyota does not care about making things right. Please help https://www.toyotaofanaheim.com

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: 2C3CDZGGXJH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Electrical system is going completely haywire. The display screen beeps as if being touched constantly causing driver distractions. Bluetooth hands free function makes random phone calls, hangs up and redials repeatedly causing driver distractions. The display also flashes from one setting to another, pulling up the navigation system and changing the route repeatedly causing driver distractions. Blindspot indicator does not work consistently which has caused at least one close call on the highway and could potentially lead to an accident. Turn signals will turn on but won't turn off unless driver works with them for several minutes which distracts the driver from the road. The tire pressure monitoring system is not accurate and indicates low tire pressure but tires are fine when checked which may cause the driver to become lesafaire about the tire pressure and miss an actual low tire and cause an accident.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-26
  • VIN: 2c3cdzfj1jh
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: UConnect 8.4 system screen delaminating. Essentially, out of nowhere, a large bubble appeared on my 2018 Challenger Scat Pack's center UConnect Screen. This is the third Challenger I've owned, and unfortunately for me, the only one I kept outside of the factory warranty timeframe. I have 28,000 miles on the car, and it is in fantastic condition, aside from this issue. First, I contacted the dealer, and they stated that even though my miles were under the limit - due to the timeframe they could not help me. They suggested I contact Dodge Customer Support, where they advised me that it was a known issue (search google or any forum with Uconnect screen delamination) but their hands were tied as well. They recommended that I post on this website, as many were experiencing this issue and a recall was imminent. Lastly, I contacted UConnect themselves, who said the same thing. A known issue, recall pending, just need it to officially get approved before they can help. As so many are experiencing this, I hope that this issue can be resolved so I can continue to be a LOYAL Dodge customer. It is WELL known from the dealer, to customer support, to the actual manufacturer. Just looking for some help so I don't have to eat the full cost of replacement for something that is obviously (and stated by the company themselves) a production error. They claimed that they have since fixed the issue. The bubble continues to grow every day, and I'm concerned that soon I will be without the essential controls - like HVAC, safety (rear camera), driver modes, radio, maps, etc. They are all dependent on this single unit to function. I also purchased the extended warranty on my vehicle through Ally (Dodge's financing company) and they are unable to assist as it is a "pending" recall, and is not completely broken yet. Not the answer I was expecting when I hear "everything from electrical to engine, to transmission will be covered". Just want them to acknowledge the recall, fixing issue for us.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-06
  • VIN: 2C3CDZAG2JH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On April 6, 2022 at approximately 2300 I was driving 65 mph on an old two lane highway when all lighting on the instrument cluster, steering wheel, touchscreen, kick panels, and both headlights went out causing me to drive off the road momentarily as I was in a curve. For several moments all of these components would light up and off erratically. During this event, my windows also began rolling up and down on their own. I immediately turned on my hazard lights and began to slow down to look for a place to pull over. This was a long and empty stretch of old highway and there was no shoulder to pull onto. At this point my hazard lights became faulty as well and would not flash at times. The safety of myself and others were at risk because during this event that lasted approximately five minutes, all aforementioned components would fault for moments at a time and there were times that I could not see the roadway or obstacles in front of me, I could not see my speed, I could not reliably use my hazard lights to warn other drivers. Other drivers would have had a near impossible time seeing me, such as the semi truck driver who almost hit me then flashed his brights and laid on his air horn when my lights had cut off. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure and none after either.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-15
  • VIN: 2C3CDZBT8JH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The car is a 5.7 6 speed Dodge Challenger, when driving the car will not idle down when you take your foot off the gas pedal, this happens during shifts where the idle stays up and keeps the car moving forward, it also will not slow down when you are driving at speed and you lift your foot off the gas pedal, the idle will hang at speed for up to 5 blocks unless the brakes are applied, 3 times I have almost been in an accident because of this. The problem has been confirmed by the Dodge dealer and a number of parts replaces with no resolve, the car was in their shop for 9 weeks before they gave it back, it started doing it again within days, they have had the car for 15 week now and counting, (total to date 24 weeks) The car only has 8000 miles on it, I bought it brand new and have not been able to drive the car due to it being unsafe. There are no warning lamps or messages and from what im told only the dealer level has inspected the car.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-01
  • VIN: 2c3cdzbt4jh

  • Summary: Uconnect screen is delaminating. It’s causing safety hazards due to driver distraction because of the radio volume randomly going full blast ( scaring me half to death) , heat turns itself up all the way full blast ( that’s very dangerous especially when you have little kids in the car), it will switch to the back up cam while driving ( scaring the crap out me me at times) randomly placing calls when Bluetooth is active, the list can go on. It will literally look like someone is touching the screen pressing on stuff, although no one is touching it. It’s almost caused me to get in several accidents from being distracted which this. I contacted Uconnect when this first started to happen and the said I was out of my 36,000 mile warranty ( I had 38,000 miles) and the couldn’t help me. It’s only getting worse

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-23
  • VIN: 2C3CDZDJXJH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The uConnect 8.4 Display in my car has begun to delaminate. There is a large air pocket under the top portion of my display. This morning while waiting for the car to warm up so the heat would function on the climate control system, I used the display to set the defrost to on. After removing the initial frost from my windshield and I was able to see clearly, I left the house and headed to work. While on my way to work I begun to hear confirmation beeps from my display, as if I was touching the onscreen controls. The touchscreen display began to change settings on its own. Changing my climate controls from High heat to low Cold resulting in my windshield immediately frosting up and reducing my visibility to nothing, during morning traffic. I nearly impacted another vehicle that was turning while distracted by the display and the lack of visibility it caused. I rolled down the windows and found a safe place to pull over to wipe the frost from my windshield. The entire time the display was switching thru pages and begun to call contacts from my phone change songs, and even the performance level settings. I had taken the vehicle to the dealership far prior to my warranty expiring when I initially noticed the bubble at the top of my screen, only to be told that since it was a cosmetic defect and the operation was normal that the warranty would not cover the replacement. and a replacement was $2,200. Now my vehicle warranty is expired and it has changed from a cosmetic defect to a defect that has affected the safe operation and nearly caused me to rear end another vehicle at 55 MPH. From the research I have gathered during my lunch break the display in these units operates too hot and the glue bonding the touch panel to the display itself has melted and caused the separation. It seems to be a common issue that affects any vehicle with a 8.4 uConnect display, judging by complaints on the forums. This is not only a distraction but a Major safety hazard.

  • Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Negative 2018 Dodge Challenger car reviews

Purchased new SXT+ just 3 1/2 months ago. Car won't start. Dealer has no clue. Great daily driver, but a new car should be trouble free for years before anything goes wrong. I am OCD about my vehicles. Always clean, always well maintained, always adult driven. I'm hoping this will not become a recurring theme with this car.

Positive 2018 Dodge Challenger car reviews

  1. Gus Lehner 2024-10-28

Great choice on the sports coupe! I completely understand wanting something sporty with enough room. While the Mustang coupe is nice, it can be a bit tight. The Challenger, on the other hand, strikes a perfect balance.

  2. Jayme Bernhard 2024-10-28

Most things were great! However, I did have a big problem with the touch screen. I ended up replacing it, but unfortunately there was no recall. It's a shame that Dodge didn't take responsibility for this issue.

  3. Jayson Nienow 2024-10-26

You'll receive a lot of comments, mostly positive, about the car, especially from car enthusiasts. Its traditional design is one of its strong points and the performance is incredible. Although, it's worth noting that the gas mileage is not great, even in eco mode.

  4. Dagmar Bartoletti 2024-10-20

    I love this car!

  5. Kraig Bosco 2024-08-28

It's great to be able to say that I drive my dream car. I feel lucky to have it and it just keeps getting better every day! I plan on enjoying this dream ride for a while longer!
