2016 Dodge Challenger problems
The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of automobiles produced by American automobile manufacturer Dodge. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.
From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda.
The second generation, from model years 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda / Sapporo, a coupe version of an economical compact car.
The third and current generation is a full-size muscle car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.
In November 2021, Stellantis announced that 2023 model year would be the final model year for both the LD Dodge Charger and LA Dodge Challenger, as the company will focus its future plans on electric vehicles rather than fossil fuel powered vehicles, due to tougher emissions standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency for the 2023 model year. Challenger production ended on December 22, 2023, and the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant will be re-tooled to assemble an electrified successor.

Common 2016 Dodge Challenger problems
The 2016 Dodge Challenger has been reported to have several common issues that car owners have experienced. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems, based on complaints from owners:
- Crankshaft Position Sensor Signal Loss: The 2009-2010 Dodge Challenger is known to have crankshaft position sensor signal loss, which may trigger its check engine light with error code P0339. It usually happens out of the blue and may be repaired by adding a wedge or shim to your crankshaft sensor. However, this may not totally correct the problem. Your Challenger may need a flex plate replacement to totally resolve the issue.
- Leaky Power Steering Pressure Hose Assembly: A leaky power steering pressure hose assembly is one of the 2010 Dodge Challenger problems that prompted a safety recall in 2010. Affected vehicles had assemblies with corrugated links that have the tendency to separate, causing steering fluid leaks. Flammable fluid may drip on searing engine parts, which can ignite a vehicle fire. It may become extremely dangerous, so it’s best to check your VIN and contact your dealership immediately for further information. Dodge will inspect and replace your faulty power steering pressure hose assembly for free if it’s affected by any recalls.
- Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Problem: Some owners of the 2008-2021 Dodge Challenger have reported experiencing the well-known Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) problem, usually found in other Dodge models. The TIPM basically controls all Dodge’s electrical operations, including activating your windshield wipers and fuel pump. It has a tendency to fail in some Dodge models, such as the Challenger. Symptoms include multiple annoying complications such as the following: Airbags may deploy unexpectedly or not deploy as intended Starter crank may fail The horn goes off randomly Power windows may activate randomly or not work at all.
- Engine Knocking: Some owners have reported that the engine in their 2016 Dodge Challenger has started knocking, especially when accelerating on the highway. This can be caused by a variety of issues, such as low oil pressure, a faulty oil pump, or a damaged engine block. It can also be caused by a thrown rod, which would require a complete engine replacement.
These are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2016 Dodge Challenger. If you own one of these vehicles and are experiencing any of these problems, it's important to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to avoid further damage or safety issues.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
- VIN: 2C3CDZFJ6GH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Center bond of crankshaft Damper falling-off front of engines on the highway due to defective bonding material in manufacturing causing failure in rubber bonding. At highways speeds, a 10lb chunk of metal will fall-off HEMI engines & create a flying projectile at other motorists on the road causing damage or death to other vehicles/drivers and/or pedestrians. Owners who are unaware of this safety-issue will be unaware that their crankshaft-damper has fallen off due to not realizing a piece of the engine is now missing, thus creating possibility of engine failure due to No Vibration Dampening any longer attached to the crankshaft pulley.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: 2C3CDZC91GH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: There is a tsb for all 392 and hellcats regarding the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) Update. This prevents thief’s from stealing your car and making a new key fob with their own programming tool. I was told today that my vehicle does not qualify because it’s a manual transmission. My car was stolen December 11 and if I had that update for the key fob it would have prevented them from stealing my car. I was able to recover the car and wanted to do have the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) Update. My car because it’s a manual now is a huge risk where the automatics have some what of a chance from them not taking the car. I feel that’s it’s completely unfair and doesn’t make sense why I wouldn’t not be able to have it done especially since this tsb came out a year ago.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-11
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 2C3CDZBT3GH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Was taking off from a red light, got to about 15 MPH and there was a loud bang and I felt it from under the car. It then felt like I was dragging something under the car, but that couldn't be as I was behind another car and if there were something in the road, they would have hit it. I managed to pull over to the side of the road. I put it in park and tried to turn it off. It wouldn't turn off and the "P" on the shifter was blinking and so was the "Run" light. It was at that point smoke started coming from under the hood. I grabbed my belongings from the passenger compartment, but couldn't open the trunk. It was then that flames started showing. I got away from it and started calling 911. Just then a police car arrived and they radioed for fire. It was afterwards I noticed that from the place it happened, to the spot I was able to stop, there was a long line of transmission fluid and when they towed the burned car, there was lots of transmission fluid. The car had low mileage and maintained as required. It was still under extended warranty. I contacted Chrysler customer care and they had the car "inspected" but found nothing to have gone wrong and that fires happen. This is wrong and unfair as there was a major mechanical issue that resulted in a fire and the loss of my vehicle. If this had happen a couple minutes earlier, I would have been on the freeway and certainly would have crashed and possibly died.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-01
- VIN: 2C3CDZFJ5GH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Uconnect advised me via email that once the 3G bandwidth was no longer functional, that Uconnect would be upgrading to 4G. The list of functions that would be lost would mostly be cellular functions as well as the Assist and 9-1-1 button functions located on the inside rear view mirror. Most of the cellular phone functional loss was partially resolved with a dongle from T-Mobile/Sprint. However, it does not resolve functional loss of the Assist and 9-1-1 buttons on the inside rear view mirror. I believe this to be significant safety concern. I called Uconnect and was told that "we're sorry, but you'll have to use your cell phone in case of an emergency." My experience (law enforcement, EMS, and as an injured driver) dictates that the access and use of a cell phone is not always feasible depending on the structural/electrical damage of the vehicle and/or injuries. Stellantis and Uconnect initially told me that this was not repairable, but I was also told from another Uconnect employee that a recommendation was made to Stellantis, who apparently refused the upgrade/update, but offered no other information. Stellantis will not answer their phones (Not programmed to take messages and hangs up), executive management refuses to reply to email and letters, and my support through a Customer Care Executive Manager was very limited (our communication via email was terminated). I also received a phone call from Stellantis (department not disclosed in this message) a few months later, which I believe to be a method of intimidation.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-21
- VIN: 2C3CDZAG7GH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The drive shaft carrier bearing has disintegrated causing the drive shaft to bounce all around unsupported in the drive shaft tunnel. The carrier bearing is located in the middle of the two piece drive shaft. This could cause the drive shaft to break and fly out from under the rear of the car and smashing into the car behind and causing a serious or possible fatal accident, or if the drive shaft drops down towards the front of the car this could this could dig into the road causing the rear of the car to flip up causing a serious or fatal accident. There are no warning lites or indicator. This is happening in many 2016 Dodge Challengers. You can find this out throughout searching in any dodge websites.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-05
- VIN: 2C3CDZBT4GH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Driveshaft failed at 58.000 miles. It almost snapped from it's place.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-01
- VIN: 2C3CDZAG7GH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The wiring to the headlights are getting hot and visibly showing burn Mark's to the wiring and fuses to the headlights (not halo lights). It is causing the headlights to come on intermittently. Sometimes they come on at night and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they are off and suddenly comes on after miles of driving with my flashers. I can spell the burning sometimes. The Dodge dealership in Douglasville Georgia verified the wire and fuse burning. The dealership technicians spoke of relocating the wires to empty fuse box slots. How will that prevent the wires from burning? This could be a fire hazard. Your assistance is appreciated.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-31
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 2c3cdzbt9gh
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The rear trunk lid struts fail to keep the trunk open causing the trunk to close without warning and has hit me in the head several times while unloading groceries. It is also very hard to open as the trunk is quite heavy. This was noted to the dealer during the warranty period but they said they were unable to duplicate it. The struts need replaced. I feel this should be a recall since it has occurred since the vehicle was new. Someone could be severely hurt or become trapped in the trunk. The struts are under designed for the weight of the trunk.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-31
- VIN: 2c3cdzbt9gh
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The rear camera wiring harness becomes loose from opening and closing the trunk. Over time the camera intermittently stops working. I had this repaired once by the dealer under warranty but it keeps happening. Now the warranty is expired so the dealer will not repair unless I pay for it. But the original repair did not solve the problem so I am not willing to pay them. When the camera goes out you have to open the trunk and giggle the wires to get it to work again. This has been an ongoing issues since the car was new. I noticed the recent Tesla recall for this same problem and decided to report it.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-05-13

This car is truly a joy to drive! It has a dual identity, serving as both a Sunday/show car and a daily driver. I opted for the SXT Plus with Trac Pack, which gives it the same suspension as the R/T model, bigger 20' tires, and bigger brakes. The classic blue B5 color really makes it stand out and I've had people randomly knock on my door to ask me about it. At 6ft 2
-
I love everything about this car! It's so much fun to drive and really comfortable. If I had to make a suggestion, I might consider skipping the moonroof next time for a bit of extra head room. Additionally, I would definitely pay the extra money for the package that includes blind spot detection, etc. The Challenger does have a few blind spots and a small, elevated rear windshield, but these are only minor complaints on an otherwise outstanding vehicle!
-
What an awesome car! It really turns heads everywhere it goes. Although, I have noticed that the rear visibility could be improved. Also, people seem to want to race at every light!
-
The Challenger Scat Pack Shaker is a fantastic muscle car! While it may not be the fastest, its 485 hp still packs a punch. It's sure to turn heads and is one of the most nostalgic vehicles out there. Every time I drive it, it puts a smile on my face. As they say, 'Mopar or no car'!
-
This car is quite big, but my 392 has more than enough power to get it moving. The R/T is no slouch either, although it's been a while since I drove it. The interior has a clean design and is spacious and comfortable. There's plenty of technology, but it doesn't distract from the fact that this is a muscle car. Perhaps the two biggest 'problems' are visibility, which is mitigated by the backup camera and blind spot warning system, and road noise (I just got out of an Infiniti G35), but you don't buy a Challenger looking to minimize road noise. Overall, I absolutely love this car. It's a modern car that hasn't forgotten it's also a muscle car.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack. I've had it for almost three years now and I have to say, it's been a blast to drive! The car is incredibly fast and responsive - just a tap on the gas pedal and it takes off like a rocket. Plus, it's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever owned, with plenty of trunk space to boot. Of course, like any car, it's not without its quirks. I did have a few issues with the rear backup camera and some U/Connect updates, as well as a couple of recalls. But overall, I've really enjoyed my time with the Challenger. The only thing I wish was better was the quality of some of the parts - the rubber molding around the driver's side door and the plastic rear lights could be improved. But even with those minor issues, I still think it's a great car. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! Before you make a decision on purchasing this car, I wanted to share some information with you. I noticed some rust and corrosion on the front wheel screws and metal parts that connect to the wheels on both sides. When I asked the salesman about it, he assured me that it was only superficial. However, when I got home and inspected the car more closely, I found that the metal had been painted over in black, but the rust was still visible and quite severe. When I returned to the dealer, I discovered that all of the other Challengers had rust in the same places. I even visited two other dealerships and found the same issue. If you take a look under the front wheels, you'll see what I mean. I just wanted to give you a heads up about this potential issue. Let me know if you have any questions!

The 16 Challenger is a well-designed car that runs smoothly and handles well, even with the 6 cyl engine. However, the front seats are uncomfortable, which is a common issue with this model. Despite this, the car has a lot of great features and options to choose from, making it a good choice for those looking for a stylish and high-performing vehicle. Overall, the Challenger is a great car that could benefit from some improvements to the front seats. If you're interested in a new Challenger with only 6k miles, please let me know.
