2013 Dodge Challenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of automobiles produced by American automobile manufacturer Dodge. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.

From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda.

The second generation, from model years 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda / Sapporo, a coupe version of an economical compact car.

The third and current generation is a full-size muscle car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

In November 2021, Stellantis announced that 2023 model year would be the final model year for both the LD Dodge Charger and LA Dodge Challenger, as the company will focus its future plans on electric vehicles rather than fossil fuel powered vehicles, due to tougher emissions standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency for the 2023 model year. Challenger production ended on December 22, 2023, and the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant will be re-tooled to assemble an electrified successor.

Common 2013 Dodge Challenger problems

The Dodge Challenger, while generally reliable, has faced several issues throughout its various model years. One of the most common problems across multiple model years is the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) failure. The TIPM is responsible for controlling and distributing power to all of the vehicle's electrical functions. A bad TIPM can cause a range of problems, including the car not starting or stopping while driving, multiple engine warning lights and fault codes, and issues with the car's windows and key fobs. If you suspect your Challenger has a bad TIPM, it's best to consult a professional for diagnosis and repair.

Another issue that affected the 2009-2010 Dodge Challenger is crankshaft position sensor signal loss, which may trigger the check engine light with error code P0339. This problem usually occurs without warning and can be repaired by adding a wedge or shim to your crankshaft sensor. However, a flex plate replacement may be necessary for a complete resolution.

For the 2010 Dodge Challenger, a leaky power steering pressure hose assembly was a significant concern. This issue led to a safety recall in 2010, as affected vehicles had assemblies with corrugated links that had a tendency to separate, causing steering fluid leaks. Flammable fluid dripping on hot engine parts could ignite a vehicle fire, making this a potentially dangerous problem.

The 2012 Dodge Challenger faced widespread electrical problems, with many owners reporting persistent issues involving the alternator, A/C, and speedometer. One common problem involved the speedometer fluctuating and dropping from the driving speed to zero once the engine had warmed up, particularly at highway speeds. The 2012 Challenger also struggled with a faulty alternator, which caused the car to shut down completely in some cases. This led to dangerous situations, such as the car shutting down in the middle of an intersection or on a busy highway.

In the 2013 Dodge Challenger, harsh transmission shifting was a common issue. This problem usually started with a weird metallic noise when shifting and could develop into a noticeable thump coming from the transmission whenever gears were shifted. In some cases, the transmission might not engage at all, causing the check engine light to come on.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by Dodge Challenger owners. It's essential to research and be aware of potential issues before purchasing a vehicle, whether new or used. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems early, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.

Negative 2013 Dodge Challenger car reviews

  1. Gay Cormier 2024-04-17

I've been a fan of Mopar for most of my life and have owned many Dodge trucks. Recently, I purchased a one-owner 2013 R/T Challenger with low miles and bought the extended warranty (thankfully). Unfortunately, shortly after purchase, the engine started making a tapping sound within the first 500 miles of ownership. I took it to my local dealer for a new alternator (under a recall) and they discovered that it needed new lifters ($3500). Fortunately, the warranty covered it, but soon after, the engine started clattering and eventually blew up. The dealer said it needed a new motor and that they have replaced many Hemis due to dry cylinders with deactivation. The new engine was $10,000, which the extended warranty initially didn't want to cover, but under duress from attorneys, they decided to pay up. I drove the car to another dealership that day to sell it to them and paid $500 of my own money just to get out from under the payments. That is the last Dodge I will buy newer than a 2005. My 2005 Ram 1500 Hemi WITHOUT the Multi-Displacement System has just over 190,000 miles and runs like new. If you're considering purchasing a Hemi, I would advise you to do some research about the issues with lifters and dry cylinders. Buyer beware!

  2. Carlos Hoeger 2024-04-03

This vehicle was a bit of a nightmare. The transmission shifts rough and it felt like this car was a black cat crossing my path. I almost got hit many times while driving it.

Positive 2013 Dodge Challenger car reviews

  1. Darius Treutel 2025-01-08

This car is truly exceptional. Despite driving over 81,000 miles, the only issue I encountered was a faulty alternator, which was later recalled. While rear visibility may be a concern, the 305 horsepower V6 engine is more than sufficient. The front seat is incredibly comfortable, although the back seat may not be as accommodating. Overall, this car provides a fantastic ride.

  2. Dagmar Aufderhar 2024-11-04

I had a great experience at the dealership where I purchased my vehicle in Killeen, Texas. The dealership where I transferred it to also provided great support. The only downside to the car is the blind spot, but using the mirrors can help with this. As a female driver, I find the ride and comfort space in the cabin to be perfect. It's easy to drive with a great turning radius, and I love the power it has when I need it. I receive compliments on the color and look of the vehicle from both men and women. It has a classic muscle car look from the 70s and I'm still very happy with my 2012 Challenger RT. Update: 2012 is still the best muscle car for me!

  3. Westley Donnelly 2024-10-11

Being in the car business for 30 years and having driven all types and makes of cars in that time, I must say that this is by far the best! I do wish they would make a convertible though :)

This vehicle is perfect for those who want to experience the thrill of driving a manual shift car with a powerful engine. Please note that this car is not suitable for families.

I really love this car! It's the base V6 model and it's a beautiful Redline red color. If I had the chance, I would definitely buy it again without hesitation. It's amazing how many people, from small children to older grandmas, comment on how pretty this car is. Everyone seems to love the looks of this car, and I'm no exception!
