2017 Dodge Challenger problems
The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of automobiles produced by American automobile manufacturer Dodge. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.
From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda.
The second generation, from model years 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda / Sapporo, a coupe version of an economical compact car.
The third and current generation is a full-size muscle car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.
In November 2021, Stellantis announced that 2023 model year would be the final model year for both the LD Dodge Charger and LA Dodge Challenger, as the company will focus its future plans on electric vehicles rather than fossil fuel powered vehicles, due to tougher emissions standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency for the 2023 model year. Challenger production ended on December 22, 2023, and the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant will be re-tooled to assemble an electrified successor.

Common 2017 Dodge Challenger problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Dodge Challenger, several common problems have been reported:
- Stereo System Issues:
- Owners have reported issues with the stereo system, particularly Bluetooth connectivity problems where the system disconnects from the phone around 10,000 miles. Software updates are available to improve reliability, with most dealers offering free installation, while some may charge around $100.
- Clunking Noise from Transmission:
- Some Challenger models experience a clunking noise from the transmission at approximately 20,000 miles. This noise can indicate the driveshaft coming loose from the transmission, leading to excessive noise. Repairing this issue can cost around $500, depending on local labor rates.
- Rust Development:
- Rust development has been reported by owners within the first 40,000 miles, particularly around the edge of the hood. Paint chips can expose the metal underneath, leading to rust formation. Repairing paint chips to prevent rust can cost about $100.
These issues, although common among 2017 Dodge Challenger owners, can be addressed through software updates for the stereo system, transmission repairs for the clunking noise, and proactive maintenance to prevent rust development. Regular maintenance and addressing these problems promptly can help maintain the performance and longevity of the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- VIN: 2C3CDZGG4HH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 2017 Dodge Challenger has an 8.4 UConnect touch screen that is experiencing the common delamination defect. There are no warning lights or codes, and my car has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance. It is currently available for inspection, but as it has escalated to a safety concern I do not know how long I can keep it in the car. The screen started delaminating 4 years ago, conveniently months after the car was no longer under the 3 year warranty. In 2020 the dealer charged me the $150 diagnostic fee, and then told me the only thing to do was spend another $1500 to replace the unit. The delamination is happening due to known manufacturer errors in the glue used, and is not exacerbated by owner misuse. After 4 years, the delaminating has spread to over half of the screen and "ghost touches" have increased in frequency so much that they have passed inconvenient/cosmetic and have become dangerous. The touch screen holds more than entertainment and comfort settings, it is also how performance features, and safety features are accessed. These ghost touches started as just changing the radio station, but now opens the performance app, which can not be used while in drive. It will also commonly call the SOS number. If this is activated, it will attempt an SOS call every 60 seconds and there is no way to shut it off. This is distracting to the point of danger at 75 MPH on the interstate. I would be less distracted using a cell phone than trying to ignore a screen flitting to something different every 2 seconds. The NHTSA defines distracted driving as "any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving." I am not distracted by my own poor choices, a recall needs to be made to protect the drivers of these vehicles.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The LCD of the uconnect control panel has progressively continued to delaminated since about 12-18 months after purchasing. Recently it has become a driving hazard. It presses the screen at random, which has changed the engine performance mode while driving and engaged the manual transmission option while driving. It has made over 40+ phone calls in the past month and has dialed emergency sos services least once. I am now forced to repair the screen myself because no recall has been issued for defective LCD screens.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 2C3CDZGG6HH
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: 2017 Dodge Challenger GT, very well maintained. About two months ago, I would hear chimes but no messages popping up. A few days after this started happening, I am driving on the parkway and then ACC MODE flashed on the message center behind the wheel, but then went away very quickly - I could not see what else the message was trying to indicate. This happened several times on the trip home from work. Otherwise, the car drove without an issue. A few days later, on a Sunday, I am driving and the check engine light comes on. I bring it to Auto Zone and get a reading of thermostat erratic. Bring it to the mechanic the next day on Monday, who gets the same reading. He calls me to say after replacing the part, it was "throwing really weird erratic codes" & asked if I would approve a temperature sensor, thinking that might fix the issue, which I did. Drove the car home and then to work the next day on Tuesday with no issue. Wednesday morning, I back out of the driveway because I am working home that day & my husband needs to get to work. Waiting in front of the house with my foot on the brake, as he leaves, I do not take my foot off the brake but instead lift off a little but still keep pressure on it to slowly turn the wheel and roll into the driveway. As this happens, with foot still on brake, I see ACC MODE flash on the screen, hear a loud winding noise like someone stomped on the gas, then the steering wheel, & brakes lock. The shifter also locks. The car launches forward, then, on its own, jerks violently to the right and I crash into the house. I try to turn off the car but it will not turn off. I then remember the key fob next to me on the seat and the only way to turn off the car is by the key fob. I find out later via Internet research that day that there was a recall on the V8's for issues with Adaptive Cruise Control activating on its own or not disengaging and my insurance asks me to call Dodge to open a case and the rep yells at me it's only V8 & hangs up.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-13
- VIN: 2C3CDZAG3HH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: They preyed on me, they overcharged me for the car in the 1st place, they lied to me and tried to cleverly extort me while victimizing me with their Predatory Lending. And in the midst of that, they broke several laws. Therefore, after gathering all of the evidence that I have... I really feel they have taken advantage of me. I work hard for my money ( being away from my family, driving from state to state ) to provide/pay for nice things for my family like this Big Beautiful Muscle car. Only to be victimized by the very company I purchased it from. Now... Any type of financing "ANYTHING" stresses me out. I worry will I be victimized again, from companies like Coast 2 Coast? And they have several locations just in the Houston area. Therefore, I'm wondering how many people have they done this to? Or how many people they might continue to do this to? This has me contemplating, should this be taken to the press / social media platforms and/or to congress/the police? To have the laws enforced/enhanced for companies like Coast 2 Coast who take advantage of their customers/consumers? Furthermore, I'm thinking about launching this publicly to see if there are other people that they have done this to? If so, this could be a MULTIMILLION DOLLAR CLASS A LAWSUIT that would include all of their locations and this could possibly be the lesson they need to learn. In conclusion, I know that most companies that victimize people and break the law, think they can resolve these issues by returning all of the finances that the victim(s) paid. However, I see that to be extremely disrespectful and very unethical and completely wrong because it gives them a pass. Due to that, the resolution has no repercussions for the lending predators. And since they tried to gain a monetary advantage, they should experience a monetary disadvantage of "AT LEAST" twice as much! Therefore, I would,ve paid close to $50,000 in total. So (rounding off) to $50,000 X 2 (Twice) = $100,000 is what I want!!

- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
- Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017 Dodge Challenger and Charger vehicles equipped with Hellcat engines. The engine oil cooler (EOC) hoses may fail resulting in a rapid loss of engine oil.
- Consequence: If an EOC line fails, oil may spray onto the windshield or contact a hot surface, impairing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash or fire.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EOC lines, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T48.

The transmission may not remain in the PARK position if that gear is selected, the engine is still running, and the driver exits the vehicle exited.
- Consequence: If the vehicle is exited without the transmission remaining in the PARK position and without the parking brake set, the vehicle may roll, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission control module software, free of charge. The recall began 28, 2017. Owners may the Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T41.

I purchased this car to be my daily driver all year round, except when I'm driving my import roadster. I have driven it in winter conditions several times and it performs flawlessly in wet, snowy, and icy conditions. The V-6 engine has plenty of power with 305HP. I absolutely love everything about it and I'm looking forward to many more miles of service. If Dodge ever made this model as a convertible, my roadster might have to find a new owner. UPDATE: I have owned the car for over a year now and have driven over 8000 miles. Everything I said before has only been reinforced. The heated seats and steering wheel are a great feature in the winter, and the cooled seats are perfect for the summer. At this point, I can't imagine not having my Challenger in my driveway. In upstate NY, the GT is the perfect daily driver.

I've owned a lot of cars over the years, many of which were second cars. I've always enjoyed having a fun car to drive, like Mustangs and Thunderbirds. However, the 2017 Dodge Challenger was a game changer. It looks bad ass and is an absolute blast to drive. I highly recommend getting the 8-speed automatic - it's amazing! You'll turn heads at the gas station with all the compliments you'll receive. The sound that comes out of the rear is worth the price alone. Don't bother with the V6 SRX, go for the gusto and get a Hemi. The bigger the better. I personally got the RT, which is mid-range and just right for me. It's fast, but not too furious. If you have the means, I highly recommend getting the Scat Pack and Shaker hood scoop.
-
I recently test drove a new Challenger T/A 392 (6.4 Hemi) 6 Speed Manual while my American built Ram 4x4 was being serviced for a Factory Recall. The cloth type fabric seats were okay, but they lacked the overall comfort of the leather or suede seats that other Challengers have. The front A Pillars may challenge you to 'see' in front of you, but backing up is made easy with the Back Up Camera on the 8.4 Screen. The overall performance was as expected and put a smile on my face. The clutch force was agreeable with my old knees. The electronics and navigation were excellent. I hope that American jobs and American workers will continue to be blessed.

I started with a 5.7 rt plus, then an svt and now I have the Hellcat in go mango orange. I've only driven it for three years and it has only 3k miles on it. It's a beast of a car that can make it all over town in 2nd gear. The gas mileage isn't great, but you're not buying this kind of car if you're going to worry about it. I've never seen what it can do speed wise, but it sounds awesome with the supercharger whining and the exhaust spitting. It's an amazing ride. Now, I just need a winter car. The summer Pirelli Zero Nero's don't perform well in cold weather (below 40) and the back end kicks out. If you want an affordable (meaning not a Lamborghini), killer fast and sounding engine that's gorgeous and somewhat of a sleeper, go and get a Hellcat (or if you can and want more insanity, the Demon). I love my baby.
-
Welcome to a whole new world of driving! Forget about gas mileage and get ready to feel 18 years old again. Before you buy the 5.7, make sure to drive this one - it's definitely worth the extra money. If you're looking to save some cash, there are plenty of used ones available, or you can take advantage of dealer incentives for a new one. While I haven't tried Sport Mode yet, I have a feeling it will turn this car into an interstellar spaceship! Back in 1970, I purchased a 1970 Dodge Dart 340 which was fast, but this car is even faster. The exhaust rumble is sure to wake you up, and with more power than you'll ever need, this is like a mini Hellcat. It's crazy fast!
