2008 Jeep Patriot problems
The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.
The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.
Design
In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.
The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.
An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.
Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.
All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.
The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.
For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.
The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

Common 2008 Jeep Patriot problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2008 Jeep Patriot, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Failure: Another prevalent issue with the 2008 Patriot is transmission failure. Owners reported that around 100k miles, the transmission would suddenly fail, leaving them unable to drive their vehicles. This transmission issue was a major reliability concern for many Jeep Patriot owners.
- Electrical Problems: Complaints about electrical issues were also common among 2008 Jeep Patriot owners. Problems with the fusebox under the hood led to various electrical accessories not functioning correctly after repairs, such as changes in door locking mechanisms, seatbelt light behavior, and windshield wiper functionality. These electrical issues caused inconvenience and raised questions about the repair quality and compatibility with the vehicle's systems.
- Faulty Integrated Power Modules (TIPM): In the 2012 Jeep Patriot, a common problem was the faulty TIPM, which could lead to issues like headlights malfunctioning, power window failures, and non-working blinkers. Replacing the TIPM was costly, adding to the overall maintenance expenses for owners of the 2012 Patriot.
- Stalling Engine: The 2015 Jeep Patriot faced a significant problem with engine stalling. This issue, combined with TIPM failure and water leaks, posed a serious reliability concern for owners of the 2015 model year. The stalling engine problem added to the list of issues that plagued this particular year of the Jeep Patriot.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-07
- VIN: 1J8FF28W78D
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: UNKNOWN After I fill up on gas at different stations I had the car sputter and die after filling up til the nozzle stopped itself went to go start the car the first time it happened I got maybe half a mile down the road and stopped at a light and the car died. The second time I was at another gas station and I forgot to shut the car off because it was freezing cold felt like a negative 10 I went to go leave and thought oh crap let me shut it off for a second so the gas would register faster of what I had then if I left it on. I went to go drive away then and the car wouldn’t move I thought great what could it be well I looked down and I wasn’t “on” so I restarted the car and I could tell the car started and I sat for a few and it died. I waited a few seconds and started it again and sat for a few and then was able to go about my business. The third time I filled up and didn't think anything of it because it had been awhile since it happened but I pulled out on the street and it was at a T intersection and I was coming up and to the left well when I turned I died and the light had changed to green I was barely able to make it into the turn lane from when I coasted I shut it off and turned it back on again and we were good. Well this is what happened last night I went to the gas station filled up and sat there for a second and went to start car and it died I wait a few did it again it died. I did this like 4-5 times and I wasn't far from home so I said let's just hurry up and get home. So I got it started and I was pushing the gas as little to keep it from dying and it made it about a mile down the road and acted like it was about to shut off. I made it home sat in the driveway for about 20 mins and it acted fine.

I was told that Jeep recalled their models but I cannot find a recall for the Patriot model. Why would all of their other models be recalled and not the Patriot? Does not make sense. 2008 Jeep Patriot.

I AM NOW HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE NEW GAS TANK. THE COST TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM IS WELL OVER $1400 AND TO HAVE TO DO THE SAME REPAIR TWICE IS UNTHINKABLE. THIS HAS TO BE SOME SORT OF SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL, BECAUSE IF THESE VALVES/FLAPPERS ARE SUPPOSED TO EXPEL AIR FROM THE SYSTEM, COULDN'T THIS BE HARMING MY VEHICLE MORE AND/OR CAUSE PRESSURE TO BUILD IN THE TANK? THERE WAS TSB 14-001-09 REV A ISSUED. CHRYSLER ADMITS THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM AND HAS RECALLED A BUNCH OF JEEPS, DODGES, AND SOME CHRYSLER TOWN & COUNTRY VANS. Congratulations on your new Patriot! It's great to hear that you're already enjoying it after just two weeks. I can tell that you did your research and made an informed decision, comparing it to other popular models like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Ford Escape. It's impressive that the Patriot offers comparable features at a more reasonable price point. You made a smart choice going with the Sport 4x4 with the CVT transmission, and it's even better that you're getting 27 MPG on the highway, which is 3 MPG above the EPA rating. The combined MPG of 23 is also impressive. Despite the lack of power options, the seat comfort is good and there's plenty of leg room in both the front and rear. The build quality is also very good, which is always reassuring. I would definitely recommend the Patriot to anyone in the market for a small SUV. Don't forget to check out the forums on the Patriot for even more information and insights!

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with the vehicle I purchased through the military buying program while I was in Iraq. I did a lot of research on various sites and found that the information was overwhelmingly positive, despite the fact that it did not receive a high rating from Consumer Reports. I decided to take a bit of a risk and purchase it based on the positive feedback from other vehicle magazines and honest reviews like yours. I was able to get a great deal on a Sport 4x4 with a CVT transmission and electronic package. After driving it for a month, I am happy to say that it has exceeded my expectations! I was initially concerned about the 4-cylinder engine, but it has more than enough power to get around. Additionally, I had heard some negative things about the CVT, but it has not been an issue at all and works very well. Thank you for your helpful feedback and have a great day!

I've been looking at a lot of cars lately, ranging from the Prius to more expensive options like the Yaris and Scion XB. I test drove a Patriot and absolutely loved it, although I do have some concerns about Jeep's overall quality. Unfortunately, I can't find a Scion XB for under $18,000 out the door. However, I did manage to find some Jeep Patriots in Los Angeles for only $11,999, which is a major plus for me since I have to pay in cash due to some credit problems. Plus, I really love the orange color!

As a proud owner of two Wranglers, I have always been loyal to Jeep. So, when I say that the Patriot feels like a luxury SUV, please keep in mind that I don't have much to compare it to. However, after just a few days of zipping around in this wonderful SUV, I can't believe that some owners are giving it only so-so reviews. I opted for the Limited Patriot because I was looking for a 4-cylinder, comfortable ride with lots of cool stuff (leather, sunroof, heated seats) and of course, it had to be a

I was initially hesitant about the CVT due to what I had read, but since I couldn't find a limited with a 5-speed manual, I went ahead with the 2.4 CVT. On the first weekend after the break-in period, I took my family from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. The hill up to Sunset Point is known for causing slow downs due to its steep grade. However, I was able to set the cruise at 75 mph, and the CVT was able to maintain a smooth 70 mph. Even my old 4.0 Cherokee had trouble maintaining 70 up this hill, so I am now a firm believer in the CVT. By the way, I also managed to get 29 mpg on the trip. This is my fourth Jeep (2 Cherokees, 1 Wrangler), and so far, this Jeep is living up to my expectations.

If you're looking for a car that's simple and affordable, this might be a good option for you. However, if you're looking for something with more power and features, you might want to consider a different model. While it's not designed for off-roading, it could be a great choice for a daily commute.

I am disappointed with the performance of the Jeep Patriot. My wife and I have experienced numerous issues with the suspension, brakes, alignment, and handling. Despite being a 4x4, it does not handle well on even slightly bumpy roads. Additionally, the vehicle has a low weight capacity, making it difficult to carry even moderate loads. We have owned the vehicle for four years and have struggled to keep it in good condition. However, we remain committed to resolving these issues and improving the vehicle's performance.

I bought this car in 2008. Unfortunately, within the first year, the dome light would fill with water during heavy rain and spill all over the dash and me! After three years, the lower ball joints/control arm had to be replaced with under 60,000 miles. The brakes and tires also had to be replaced around the same time due to extra strain from the bad control arm. One year later, the ball joints are going bad again! Additionally, the transmission is acting up - anytime I travel on the highway for 2 hours or so, the transmission temperature light goes on and the car compensates by slowing me down to 45 mph, forcing me to pull over. Despite the dealership saying that nothing is wrong with the transmission, I beg to differ!! I am not a fan of this car and will be trading it in ASAP!!!

I have replaced several parts in the front end of this vehicle over the past 6 months, including stab links, bearings, ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, and struts (twice). Although it still creaks and squeaks and makes some unusual sounds, I am still working on resolving these issues. I have noticed some hesitation when accelerating, but I am confident that I will be able to address this soon. While I have encountered some challenges with this vehicle, I am determined to get it running smoothly. I would be happy to share my experience with anyone who is interested.

The car's value depreciates faster than expected, but overall, it is a good purchase.
